The growing disposal of used tyres and plastic waste in landfills poses a significant environmental challenge. This study investigates the potential of utilizing used tyre rubber and macro-synthetic fibres (MSFs) made from recycled plastics in fibre-reinforced rubberized concrete (RuFRC). Various percentages of tyre rubber shreds were used to replace coarse aggregates, calculated as 10%, 20%, and 30% of the volume of fine aggregates; fibre dosages (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% by volume) were incorporated into the mix, and a series of physical, mechanical, and durability properties were evaluated. The results show that, as the fibre and rubber content increased, the slump of RuFRC decreased, with the lowest value obtained for concrete with 1% fibre and 30% rubber. The density of RuFRC decreases as the rubber percentage increases due to air voids and increased porosity caused by the rubber. The strength properties of RuFRC were found to decline with the increase in the rubber content, with mixes containing 30% rubber exhibiting reductions of about 60% in compressive strength, 27% in tensile strength, and 13% in flexural strength compared to the control specimen. Durability testing revealed that an increased rubber content led to higher water absorption, water penetration, and chloride ion permeability, with 30% rubber showing the highest values. However, lower rubber content (10%) and higher fibre dosages improved the durability characteristics, with water absorption reduced by up to 5% and shrinkage strains lowered by about 7%, indicating better compaction and bonding. These results indicate that RuFRC with moderate rubber and higher fibre content offers a promising balance between sustainability and performance. Full article

This study presents a comparison of the mechanical properties of selected high-performance concrete mixtures, some of which contained a proportion of recycled concrete aggregate (15% or 30%) as a substitute for natural aggregate. A reference mixture without recycled concrete aggregate was used for comparison. Initially, the properties of concrete containing both the natural and recycled aggregate types were characterized. This was followed by a series of mechanical tests investigating the compressive strength, flexural strength, and chemical resistance (including resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid). The structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams produced from the mixtures was assessed, and surface morphology was evaluated using a digital microscope. The results confirmed that the use of recycled aggregate had a measurable yet limited effect on the properties of hardened concrete. While the compressive strength tended to decrease slightly with an increasing degree of replacement, the flexural strength remained stable in all the mixtures. The tested mixtures demonstrated adequate resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid. Interestingly, specimens subjected to a frost-resistance test showed improved flexural strength, potentially due to ongoing hydration or microcrack healing. In addition, the RC beams with partial aggregate replacement achieved a higher load-bearing capacity compared to the reference beams. The optical surface evaluation method proved to be a valuable tool, complementary to conventional strength testing. This research enhances the current understanding of recycled aggregate concrete and supports its potential for structural applications. Full article

While acetic acid has proven effective as a mild acidic treatment for removing adhered mortar from recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) surfaces, its potential for dissolving damage to the surface of the original natural coarse aggregate (NCA) within the RCA and its impact on the resultant concrete properties require careful consideration. This investigation systematically evaluates the effects of varying concentrations of dilute acetic acid solutions, commonly used in RCA treatment protocols, through a multi-methodological approach that includes comprehensive physical characterization, stylus and 3D optical profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nanoindentation analysis. The results show that even dilute acid solutions have an upper concentration limit, as excessive acid concentration, specifically 0.4 M, induces significant textural dislocations on NCA surfaces, creating millimeter-scale erosion pits that increase aggregate water absorption by 18.5%. These morphological changes significantly impair concrete workability and reduce compressive strength performance. Furthermore, microstructural analysis reveals a 45.24% expansion in interfacial transition zone (ITZ) thickness, accompanied by notable reductions in elastic modulus and microhardness characteristics. In practical RCA treatment applications, for RCA containing limestone-based NCA, it is recommended to use acetic acid concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 M to avoid substantial physical and microstructural degradation of aggregates and concrete. To promote the large-scale utilization of construction and industrial solid waste in engineering, this study focuses on developing accurate prediction and optimization methods for the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of composite recycled mortar. Innovatively incorporating three types of recycled powder (RP)—recycled clay brick powder (RCBS), recycled concrete powder (RCBP), and recycled gypsum powder (RCGP)—we systematically investigated the effects of RP type, replacement rate, and curing period on mortar UCS. The core objective and novelty lie in establishing and comparing three artificial intelligence models for high-precision UCS prediction. Furthermore, leveraging GA-BP’s functional extremum optimization theory, we determined the optimal UCS alongside its corresponding mix proportion and curing scheme, with experimental validation of the solution reliability. Key findings include the following: (1) Increasing total RP content significantly reduces mortar UCS; the maximum UCS is achieved with a 1:1 blend ratio of RCBP:RCGP, while a 20% RCBS replacement rate and extended curing periods markedly enhance strength. (2) Among the prediction models, GA-BP demonstrates superior performance, significantly outperforming BP models with both single and double hidden layer. (3) The functional extremum optimization results exhibit high consistency with experimental validation, showing a relative error below 10%, confirming the method’s effectiveness and engineering applicability. This research aimed to evaluate the impact of using brick waste powder (BWP) and varying lengths of polyester fibers (PFs) on the performance properties of asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures. BWP was utilized as a replacement for traditional limestone powder (LS) filler, while PFs of three lengths (3 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm) were introduced. The study employed the response surface methodology (RSM) for experimental design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to identify the influence of BWP and PF on the selected performance indicators. These indicators included bulk density, air voids, voids in the mineral aggregate, voids filled with asphalt, Marshall stability, Marshall flow, Marshall quotient, indirect tensile strength, wet tensile strength, and the tensile strength ratio. The findings demonstrated that BWP improved moisture resistance and the mechanical performance of AC mixes. Moreover, incorporating PF alongside BWP further enhanced these properties, resulting in superior overall performance. Using multi-objective optimization through RSM-based empirical models, the study identified the optimal PF length of 5 mm in combination with BWP for achieving the best AC properties. Validation experiments confirmed the accuracy of the predicted results, with an error margin of less than 8%. The study emphasizes the intriguing prospect of BWP and PF as sustainable alternatives for improving the durability, mechanical characteristics, and cost-efficiency of asphalt pavements. Full article

The accumulation of end-of-life tires and the rapid increase in demolition activities pose significant environmental and waste-management challenges. The redevelopment of construction materials incorporating this waste is a potentially promising strategy for minimizing environmental impact while promoting the principles of a circular economy. This study investigates the performance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) incorporating up to 20% rubber aggregates (sand and gravel) and 40% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for non-structural applications. A series of tests was conducted to assess fresh and hardened properties, including flowability, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption, and density. The results indicated that increasing RCA content reduced density and compressive strength, while tensile and flexural strengths were only moderately affected. Response surface methodology (RSM), utilizing a Box–Behnken design, was employed to optimize compressive, tensile, and flexural strength responses. Statistical analysis was used to identify the optimal mix proportions, which balance the mechanical performance and sustainability of SCC with recycled components. Mixtures incorporating moderate rubber content—specifically, 5–5.5% sand rubber and 0–6% coarse rubber—and 40% recycled-concrete aggregate (RCA) achieved the highest predicted performance, with compressive strength ranging from 20.00 to 28.26 MPa, tensile strength from 2.16 to 2.85 MPa, and flexural strength reaching 5.81 MPa, making them suitable for sidewalks and walkways. Conversely, mixtures containing higher rubber proportions (5.5–20% sand rubber and 20% coarse rubber) combined with the same RCA level (40%) showed the lowest mechanical performance, with compressive strength between 5.2 and 10.08 MPa, tensile strength of 1.05–1.41 MPa, and flexural strength from 2.18 to 3.54 MPa. These findings underscore the broad performance range achievable through targeted optimization. They confirm the viability of recycled materials for producing environmentally friendly SCC in non-structural applications. Full article

Effective management and handling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) can yield significant technical and environmental benefits for road pavement construction. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date chronological review of studies on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures—primarily hot mix asphalt (HMA)—incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Since the main limitation of RCA is the presence of residual adhered mortar, the review also includes studies that applied various surface treatments (mechanical, chemical, and thermal, among others) to enhance mixture performance. The article summarizes the experimental procedures used and highlights the key findings and conclusions of the reviewed research. Although the results are varied and sometimes contradictory—mainly due to the source variability and heterogeneity of RCA—the use of these materials is technically viable. Moreover, their application can provide environmental, social, and economic advantages, particularly in the construction of low-traffic roadways. Finally, the article identifies research gaps and offers recommendations for future researches. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

The utilization of recycled concrete aggregate presents an effective solution for construction waste mitigation. However, concrete service in sulfate environments leads to sulfate ion retention in recycled aggregates, substantially impairing their quality and requiring modification approaches. A critical question remains whether traditional recycled aggregate modification techniques can effectively enhance the performance of these sulfate-containing recycled aggregates (SRA). Cement paste wrapping in various proportions was used in this investigation to enhance SRA. The performance of both SRA and modified aggregates was systematically assessed through measurements of apparent density, water absorption, crushing value, and microhardness. Microstructural analysis of the cement wrapping modification mechanism was conducted by scanning electron microscopy coupled with mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results revealed that internal sulfate addition decreased the crushing value and increased the water absorption of recycled aggregates, primarily due to micro-cracks formed by expansion. Additionally, the pores were occupied by erosion products, leading to a slight increase in the apparent density of aggregates. The performance of SRA was effectively enhanced by cement paste wrapping at a 0.6 water–binder ratio, whereas it was negatively impacted by a ratio of 1.0. The modifying effect became even more effective when 15% fly ash was added to the wrapping paste. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the interface of SRA was predominantly composed of gypsum crystals. Cement paste wrapping greatly enhanced the original interface structure, despite a new dense interface formed in the modified aggregates. Full article

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining safety and performance standards. One promising area for improvement lies in the use of sustainable materials in airport infrastructure. One of the issues preventing uptake of emerging sustainable technologies is the lack of guidance relating to the opportunities, potential benefits, associated risks and an implementation plan specific to airport pavements. This research reviewed opportunities to incorporate waste materials into rigid airport pavements, focusing on concrete base slabs. Commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were considered, as well as recycled aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled crushed glass (RCG), and blast furnace slag (BFS). Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also used to quantify the potential for environmental benefit associated with various concrete mixtures, with findings showing 23% to 50% reductions in embodied carbon are possible for selected theoretical concrete mixtures that incorporate waste materials. With considered evaluation and structured implementation, the integration of waste materials into rigid airport pavements offers a practical and effective route to improve environmental outcomes in aviation infrastructure. It was concluded that a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—assessing financial, environmental, and social factors—guides material selection and can support sustainable decision-making, as does performance-based specifications that enable sustainable technologies to be incorporated into airport pavement. The study also proposed a consequence-based implementation hierarchy to facilitate responsible adoption of waste materials in airside pavements. The outcomes of this review will assist airport managers and pavement designers to implement practical changes to achieve more sustainable rigid airport pavements in the future. Full article

This study investigates the impact of partially replacing cement with fly ash (FA) on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (FRRC) incorporating waste tyre rubber and recycled macro-synthetic fibers (MSF). FRRC mixtures were prepared with varying fly ash replacement levels (0%, 25%, and 50%), rubber aggregate contents (0%, 10%, and 20% by volume of fine aggregate), and macro-synthetic fiber dosages (0% to 1% by total volume). The fresh properties were evaluated through slump tests, while hardened properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength were systematically assessed. Results demonstrated that fly ash substitution up to 25% improved the interfacial bonding between rubber particles, fibers, and the cementitious matrix, leading to enhanced tensile and flexural performance without significantly compromising compressive strength. However, at 50% replacement, strength reductions were more pronounced due to slower pozzolanic reactions and reduced cement content. The inclusion of MSF effectively mitigated strength loss induced by rubber aggregates, improving post-cracking behavior and toughness. Overall, an optimal balance was achieved at 25% fly ash replacement combined with 10% rubber and 0.5% fiber content, producing a more sustainable composite with favorable mechanical properties while reducing carbon and ecological footprints. These findings highlight the potential of integrating industrial by-products and waste materials to develop eco-friendly, high-performance FRRC for structural applications, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete infrastructure. The mesoscopic-scale discrete element method (DEM) modeling approach demonstrated high compatibility with macroporous recycled concrete (MRC). However, existing DEM models failed to adequately balance modeling accuracy and computational efficiency for recycled aggregate (RA), replicate the three distinct interfacial transition zone (ITZ) types and pore structure of MRC, or establish a systematic calibration methodology. In this study, PFC 3D was employed to establish a randomly polyhedral RA composite model and an MRC model. A systematic methodology for parameter testing and calibration was proposed, and compressive test simulations were conducted on the MRC model. The model incorporated all components of MRC, including three types of ITZs, achieving an aggregate volume fraction of 57.7%. Errors in simulating compressive strength and elastic modulus were 3.8% and 18.2%, respectively. Compared to conventional concrete, MRC exhibits larger strain and a steeper post-peak descending portion in stress–strain curves. At peak stress, stress is concentrated in the central region and the surrounding arc-shaped zones. After peak stress, significant localized residual stress persists within specimens; both toughness and toughness retention capacity increase with rising porosity and declining compressive strength. Failure of MRC is dominated by tension rather than shear, with critical bonds determining strength accounting for only 1.4% of the total. The influence ranking of components on compressive strength is as follows: ITZ (new paste–old paste) > ITZ (new paste–natural aggregates) > new paste > old paste > ITZ (old paste–natural aggregates). The Poisson’s ratio of MRC (0.12–0.17) demonstrates a negative correlation with porosity. Predictive formulas for peak strain and elastic modulus of MRC were established, with errors of 2.6% and 3.9%, respectively. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable construction materials has driven research into low-carbon geopolymers that mitigate both cement-related emissions and plastic and glass waste accumulation. This study explores the development of geopolymer concrete incorporating fly ash (FA), slag (S), and FA + S blends, with 10% recycled crushed glass (RCG) and recycled plastic waste (RPW) as partial coarse aggregate replacements. Compressive strength testing revealed that FA + S-based geopolymers (25FA + S) with 100% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement achieved a 7-day strength of 24.6 MPa, representing a 98% improvement over control specimens. Slag-based geopolymers demonstrated water absorption properties comparable to OPC, indicating enhanced durability. Microstructural analyses using SEM, XRD, and EDS confirmed the formation of a dense aluminosilicate matrix, with slag promoting FA reactivity and reinforcing interfacial transition zone (ITZ). These effects contributed to superior mechanical performance and water resistance. Despite minor shrinkage-induced cracking, full OPC replacement with S or FA + S geopolymers outperformed control specimens, consistently exceeding the target strength of 15 MPa required for low-impact, single-story housing applications within seven days. These findings underscore the potential of geopolymer systems for rapid and sustainable construction, offering an effective solution for reducing carbon footprints and repurposing industrial waste. The dramatic increase in urban construction waste poses severe environmental challenges. Utilizing waste concrete to produce recycled aggregates (RA) for manufacturing recycled concrete (RC) represents an effective strategy for resource utilization. However, inherent defects in RA, such as high porosity, microcracks, and adherent old mortar layers, lead to significant performance degradation of the resulting RC, limiting its widespread application. Traditional methods for enhancing RA often suffer from limitations, including high energy consumption, increased costs, or the introduction of new pollutants. MICP offers an innovative approach for enhancing RC performance. This technique employs the metabolic activity of specific microorganisms to induce the formation of a three-dimensionally interwoven calcium carbonate gel network within the pores and on the surface of RA. This gel network can improve the inherent defects of RA, thereby enhancing the performance of RC. Compared to conventional techniques, this approach demonstrates significant environmental benefits and enhances concrete compressive strength by 5–30%. Furthermore, embedding mineralizing microbial spores within the pores of RA enables the production of self-healing RC. This review systematically explores recent research advances in microbial mineral gel network for improving RC performance. It begins by delineating the fundamental mechanisms underlying microbial mineralization, detailing the key biochemical reactions driving the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) gel, and introducing the common types of microorganisms involved. Subsequently, it critically discusses the key environmental factors influencing the effectiveness of MICP treatment on RA and strategies for their optimization. The analysis focuses on the enhancement of critical mechanical properties of RC achieved through MICP treatment, elucidating the underlying strengthening mechanisms at the microscale. Furthermore, the review synthesizes findings on the self-healing efficiency of MICP-based RC, including such metrics as crack width healing ratio, permeability recovery, and restoration of mechanical properties. Key factors influencing self-healing effectiveness are also discussed. Finally, building upon the current research landscape, the review provides perspectives on future research directions for advancing microbial mineralization gel techniques to enhance RC performance, offering a theoretical reference for translating this technology into practical engineering applications. Sustainability in the construction sector has become a fundamental objective for mitigating escalating environmental challenges; given that concrete is the most widely used man-made material, extending its service life is therefore critical. Among durability concerns, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) attack is particularly deleterious to concrete structures. Therefore, this study investigates the short- and long-term performance of concrete produced with copper slag (CS)—a massive waste generated by copper mining activities worldwide—employed as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), together with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), obtained from concrete construction and demolition waste, when exposed to MgSO4. CS was used as a 15 vol% cement replacement, while RCA was incorporated at 0%, 20%, 50%, and 100 vol%. Compressive strength, bulk density, water absorption, and porosity were measured after water curing (7–388 days) and following immersion in a 5 wt.% MgSO4 solution for 180 and 360 days. Microstructural characteristics were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis with its differential thermogravimetric derivative (TG-DTG), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The results indicated that replacing 15% cement with CS reduced 7-day strength by ≤10%, yet parity with the reference mix was reached at 90 days. Strength losses increased monotonically with RCA content. Under MgSO4 exposure, all mixtures experienced an initial compressive strength gain during the short-term exposures (28–100 days), attributed to the pore-filling effect of expansive sulfate phases. However, at long-term exposure (180–360 days), a clear strength decline was observed, mainly due to internal cracking, brucite formation, and the transformation of C–S–H into non-cementitious M–S–H gel. Based on these findings, the combined use of CS and RCA at low replacement levels shows potential for producing environmentally friendly concrete with mechanical and durability performance comparable to those of concrete made entirely with virgin materials.
