The structure and interpersonal interactions of traditional residential communities have also been impacted and recreated as a result of the fast development of urban space and related communities. This study explores the interrelationship between neighborhood social cohesion and the life satisfaction of urban adult residents through the mediating effect of place attachment. A comprehensive theoretical model was constructed to analyze the action mechanism among these variables. Data were collected through an online questionnaire platform (n = 301), and structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed for analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between neighborhood social cohesion and residents’ place attachment. Place attachment appeared to play a mediating role between neighborhood social cohesion and life satisfaction, in which place dependence was also a potential effective mediator between the three dimensions of neighborhood social cohesion (neighborliness, sense of community, and neighborhood attractiveness) and life satisfaction. The results suggest that enhancing community cohesion may contribute to urban adult residents’ well-being by strengthening their functional dependence on the community. Full article

Grassland communities consist primarily of perennial herbaceous species, with grasses forming a dominant or significant component. These ecosystems have been utilised for economic purposes since the earliest periods of human history. In the natural environment, they fulfil numerous critical functions that, despite increasing awareness of climate change, often remain undervalued. Grasslands contribute directly to climate regulation, air purification, soil conservation, flood mitigation, and public health—all of which positively affect the well-being of nearby populations. Moreover, they satisfy higher-order human needs known as “cultural” services, providing aesthetic enjoyment and recreational opportunities. These services, in tangible terms, support the development of rural tourism. The objective of this study was to examine the perception of cultural ecosystem services provided by different types of grassland communities—meadows, pastures, and lawns. The study employed a structured questionnaire to evaluate the perceived significance and functions of these communities. Respondents assessed their aesthetic and recreational value based on land-use type. To quantify these dimensions, the study applies the Recreational and Leisure Attractiveness Index (RLAI), the Aesthetic Attractiveness Index (AAI), ranking methods, and contingent valuation techniques. Based on the respondents’ declared WTP (willingness to pay) and WTA (willingness to accept) values, statistically significant differences in the perceived value of land-use types were identified. Lawns were rated highest in terms of recreational attractiveness, meadows in terms of aesthetics, while pastures achieved the highest economic values. Significant differences were also observed depending on respondents’ place of residence and academic background. The results indicate that the valuation of cultural services encompasses both functional and psychological aspects and should be integrated into local land-use and landscape planning policies. Recreational fisheries increasingly intersect with the habitats of flagship species, i.e., species that attract public attention and drive conservation efforts, raising potential ecological conflicts. This study investigated the spatial coupling between recreational fisheries and three flagship species in the Yangtze River Basin: the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), the Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), and the scaly-sided merganser (Mergus squamatus). Drawing on over 10,000 fishing Points of Interest recorded between 2015 and 2024 and over 300 verified species occurrences, this study applied a Random Forest model with spatial integration and a Maximum Entropy model to examine estimated current distributions and forecast interactions from 2025 to 2035. Flagship species habitat suitability was modeled and projected at a spatial resolution of 1 km, while recreational fishing density was resolved on a coarser grid of 1.875° × 1.25° in latitude–longitude dimensions. Results reveal a substantial increase in high-risk overlap zones. For example, high-density fishing areas within high-suitability habitats for the scaly-sided merganser expanded from 0 km2 in 2015 to 85,359 km2 in 2024. Projections indicate continued intensification of such overlaps, particularly in regions including Ma’anshan–Wuhu, the Taihu–Chaohu–Poyang lake system, and Yibin. These findings offer robust, model-driven evidence of growing spatial conflicts and offer actionable insights for ecosystem-based governance. The methodological framework is transferable and supports broader applications in other regions and species under ecological sustainability goals. Full article

Tourism learning resources refer to tourism attractions that carry learning content or stimulate learning behaviors for tourists, thereby determining the quality and effectiveness of tourists’ learning experiences. Actively developing tourism learning resources and manifesting tourism learning functions serves as an innovative practical path for cultivating new quality productivity in tourism and bears the contemporary mission of constructing a national lifelong learning system in the context of Chinese-style modernization. However, at the present stage, Chinese tourists, tourism enterprises, and government functional departments still lack a clear and systematic understanding of the connotations and characteristics of tourism learning resources. This knowledge gap restricts the depth and breadth of resource development. To address the identified gaps, this study begins by exploring the relationship between tourism and learning. Through a systematic literature review, it aims to develop a conceptual framework for tourism learning resources to promote lifelong learning and support sustainable tourism development. Taking this framework as a tool, this paper first explains the connotation and characteristics of tourism learning resources; secondly, classifies them into knowledge popularization, natural observation, skill experience, inspirational development, and cultural recreation types; thirdly, identifies their functional manifestations as acquiring experience, knowledge, skills, and wisdom; and finally, proposes development strategies for tourism learning resources. The most critical strategies identified are (1) enhancing tourism learning literacy, (2) optimizing learning-oriented products, and (3) constructing regionally integrated learning destinations. Influencer marketing is estimated to reach USD 32.55 billion by the year 2025. The extant research on virtual vs. human influencers’ effectiveness has reported mixed results. Currently, research has yet to explore how consumption motivation and influencer gender (virtual vs. human) may differentially impact consumer behavior. Likewise, whether antecedent factors such as prior attitudes toward the brand may affect the perceived authenticity and attractiveness of influencers has rarely been investigated. To fill this research gap, the current study examined virtual vs. human influencers’ effectiveness utilizing a 2 (influencer type) × 2 (product type) × 2 (influencer gender) between-subject online experiment. Specifically, Airbnb (a recreational product) and NJM (an insurance product) were respectively designated as a hedonic and utilitarian brand. The findings (N = 468) demonstrated that while prior brand attitudes toward a hedonic product had no effect on perceived influencer authenticity, the opposite was true for a utilitarian product. No significant difference was shown in perceived authenticity and attractiveness between a male and female (virtual or human) influencer. Structural equation modeling suggested that perceived social similarity between a participant and an influencer positively impacted the perceived attractiveness and authenticity of influencers and purchase intention. Hedonic instead of utilitarian motivation was found to be a positive predictor of purchase intention. Full article

Exploring the cognitive and affective image dimensions involved in the formation of attractive sports destinations is essential to understand how sports activities influence participants’ experiences. This study explores how municipal sports programs and small-scale events shape both the cognitive and affective image of a destination. The research was conducted among 456 adult participants engaged in public sports events and recreation programs in various municipalities across Attica, Greece. Participation was voluntary and based on an open public call. The questionnaire was adapted from (a) scale, which examines the influence of a sports event image on a destination image—it included 17 items measuring the cognitive image destination grouped into four factors: (1) environment, (2) experiences, (3) attractions, and (4) entertainment–infrastructure, as well as 5 items assessing one factor of affective image destination—and (b) a scale for the intention to participate in sports events and exercise programs. The findings provide insights into how community-level sports initiatives contribute to form a favorable destination image, not only through tangible elements like facilities and environment but also through emotional engagement and social connectivity. These results can inform the development of more targeted and impactful local sports programs that enhance participant’s satisfaction and foster long-term community involvement. Full article

The dramatic increase in domestic and industrial waste over recent centuries has significantly polluted water bodies, threatening aquatic life and human activities such as drinking, recreation, and commerce. Understanding pollutant dispersion is essential for designing effective waste management systems, employing both experimental and computational techniques. Among Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has emerged as a novel approach based on a discretized Boltzmann equation. The versatility and parallelization capability of this method makes it particularly attractive for fluid dynamics simulations using high-performance computing. Motivated by its successful application across various scientific disciplines, this study explores the potential of LBM to model pollutant mixing and dilution from outfalls into surface water bodies, focusing specifically on vertical dense jets in crossflow (JICF), a key scenario for the diffusion of brine from desalination plants. A full-LBM scheme is employed to model both the hydrodynamics and the transport of the saline concentration field, and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are employed in the framework of LBM to reduce computational costs typically associated with turbulence modeling, together with a recursive regularization procedure for the collision operator to achieve greater stability. Several key aspects of vertical dense JICF are considered. The simulations successfully capture general flow characteristics corresponding to jets with varying crossflow parameter urF and most of the typical vortical structures associated with JICF. Relevant quantities such as the terminal rise height, the impact distance, the dilution at the terminal rise height, and the dilution at the impact point are compared with experimental results and semi-empirical relations. The results show a systematic underestimation of these quantities, but the key trends are successfully captured, highlighting LBM’s promise as a tool for simulating wastewater dispersion in aquatic environments. Hydrogeological Assessment of Urban Springs in Warsaw and Their Role in Green Space Management

Springs located in urban historic areas are important for groundwater management, the protection of green spaces, and the preservation of park functions and urban structure. This article presents the results of a study of selected Warsaw springs in the city center under conservation protection, focusing on their hydrogeological characteristics, hydrogeochemical analysis, and pressures associated with urban development. Field and laboratory analyses, as well as hydrodynamic modeling, made it possible to assess the quantity and quality of water from the springs. Hydrodynamic studies showed that the area of the spring recharge zone of 13.77 ha is characterized by an average time of water exchange of approx. 26 years and a low infiltration recharge, an average of 18 mm/year. Hydrogeochemical analyses showed that spring water has a complex, multi-ion hydrogeochemical type: Cl-SO4-HCO3-Ca-Na, Cl-HCO3-SO4-Ca-Na, Cl-HCO3-Na-Ca, and NO3-Cl-HCO3-Ca-Na, including the occurrence of hazardous substances such as PAH and BTEX, PCBs, non-ionic detergents, and heavy metals. The results indicate that urbanization significantly affects groundwater levels and spring recharge areas, which can limit the availability of water in green and recreational areas. The results of the study indicate the need for action to increase groundwater resources through managed aquifer recharge for rainwater management in densely built-up areas. In terms of water quality measures, due to the unsatisfactory chemical water status, the use of spring water for irrigation of urban vegetation or its incorporation into the active recreational infrastructure of the park currently appears to be fraught with considerable risk, hence the need to take protective action in the spring recharge zone through the regular monitoring of groundwater quality, the legal designation of protection zones, and the implementation of policies that support urban water retention. It is necessary to implement pre-treatment solutions (aeration, desalination) or introduce appropriately resistant vegetation. Any type of activity that allows the use of water after treatment will certainly contribute to making the park more attractive as a place of recreation and leisure for residents. Findings from the research can support decisions on protecting green spaces and adapting cities to climate change. Full article

Previously, we reported that microplastic volatile organic compounds are present within the Chrysaora chesapeakei of Chesapeake Bay, MD. In this study, we report the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) on the hydrophobic surface of microplastic (MP) particles extracted from the C. chesapeakei, detected by Raman spectroscopy and identified by Wiley’s KnowItAll Software with IR & Raman Spectral Libraries. C. chesapeakei encounters various microplastics and emerging contaminants as it floats through the depths of the Patuxent River water column. This study identifies subsuming CECs found directly on microplastics from within C. chesapeakei in the wild using Raman spectroscopy. Among the extracted microplastics, some of the emerging contaminants found on the different microplastics were pesticides, pharmaceuticals, minerals, food derivatives, wastewater treatment chemicals, hormones, and recreational drugs. Our results represent the first of such findings in C. chesapeakei, obtained directly from the field, and indicate C. chesapeakei’s relationship with microplastics, with this species serving as a vector of emerging contaminants through the marine food web. This paper further illustrates a relationship between different types of plastics that attract dissimilar types of emerging pollutants in the same surrounding environmental conditions, underscoring the urgent need for further research to fully understand and mitigate the risks that MPs coexist with contaminants. Salvia divinorum is a psychoactive plant presenting a complex pharmacological profile, attracting significant scientific interest due to its potential therapeutic applications and associated health risks. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the toxic and therapeutic effects of S. divinorum, evaluating its potential medical applications while highlighting the risks associated with its consumption. Additionally, the review examines the plant’s recreational use, global consumption trends, and legal status. By synthesising current research, this article aims to clarify the implications of S. divinorum use and inform future studies on its pharmacological potential and regulatory considerations. This study aims to analyze how the climatic conditions in the city of João Pessoa, Brazil, influence sustainable tourism, with a specific focus on Climate–Tourism/Transfer–Information–Scheme (CTIS), Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), and rainfall patterns. It also compares these aspects with those of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro to identify climatic patterns, local challenges, and adaptive strategies relevant to the growing tourism context, based on hourly and monthly climate data from 2014 to 2024. The results show that João Pessoa presents a more stable thermal regime with fewer extreme heat events, yet consistently higher daytime PET values, especially between 9:00 and 15:00, throughout the year. The city also experiences a greater frequency of moderate-to-heavy rainfall during its defined wet season (April to July), often influenced by low-predictability atmospheric systems such as Easterly Wave Disturbances (EWDs). CTIS results confirm high climatic suitability for tourism and recreation during the dry season but reduced suitability during the rainy season. These findings suggest that integrating climate adaptation strategies into tourism planning, such as diversifying attractions beyond sun-and-beach tourism and improving real-time climate communication, may help reduce the impact of seasonal variability on visitor experience. Intensive farming in urban suburbs often causes habitat loss, soil erosion, wastewater discharge, and agricultural productivity decline, threatening long-term benefits for the local community. We developed a nature-based solution for sustainable land restoration by establishing “Green Treasure Island” (GTI). The aim of this study is to evaluate the ecological restoration effectiveness of GTI and explore its feasibility and replicability for future applications. The core eco-functional zone of GTI—a 7 hm2 forested wetland—embedded a closed-loop framework that integrates land consolidation, ecological restoration, and sustainable land utilization. The forested wetland efficiently removed 65% and 74% of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff, raised flood control capacity by 22%, and attracted 48 bird species. Additionally, this biophilic recreational space attracted over 3400 visitors in 2022, created green jobs, and promoted local green agricultural product sales. Through adaptive management and nature education activities, GTI evolved into a landmark that represents local natural–social characteristics and serves as a publicly accessible natural park for both rural and urban residents. This study demonstrates the feasibility of creating GTI for improving ecosystem services, providing a practical, low-cost template that governments and local managers can replicate in metropolitan rural areas worldwide to meet both ecological and development goals. Currently, studies in green infrastructure have developed different wetland park value evaluation systems, and various criteria to measure urban economic development have been proposed. However, these criteria are not widely adopted, and there is a lack of investigation on the relationship between wetland parks and urban economic development. The existing literature indicates that the specific impact factors of wetland parks on urban economic development have not been further explored. Therefore, this study builds on previous theoretical research to develop a conceptual model with 12 hypotheses, followed by a questionnaire survey method to obtain data. The questions have been developed for each of five variables in the conceptual model to validate the research hypotheses that have been contextually modified according to the uniqueness of different wetland parks based on previous classic scales, namely, ecological value, recreational value, resource attraction, a diversified industrial structure, and economic expectation. This study aims to investigate how wetland parks promote urban economic health through ecological value and recreational value, particularly their indirect role in fostering diversified industrial structure, resource attraction, and economic expectations. Structural equation modeling with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0 and the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) 24.0 has been used for validating the hypotheses. The findings in this paper highlight that recreational value has the most significant impact on a diversified industrial structure that, in turn, has a highly significant positive impact on both resource attraction and economic expectations. In addition, the influence of ecological value on urban economic outcomes largely depends on recreational value as a mediator. Two significant impact pathways have been further identified: (1) from ecological value, recreational value, and a diversified industrial structure to resource attraction; and (2) from ecological value, recreational value, and a diversified industrial structure to economic expectations. Further, the managers and developers of wetland parks need to fully preserve the ecological value of the parks and optimize their recreational value before embarking on new development projects. The theoretical contribution of this paper lies in uncovering the direct and indirect effects of ecological value and recreational value on diversified industrial structure and resource attraction, emphasizing the crucial role of recreational value in driving economic diversification. The practical implications are reflected in providing concrete pathways and strategies for urban planners and policymakers to optimize the ecological and recreational value of wetland parks, thereby promoting urban economic development. Wilderness areas are declining worldwide. A major reason is large-scale forestry activities like logging. At the same time, wilderness offers unique opportunities for recreation in natural and remote environments, enabling communities to gather economic income based on wilderness tourism. An outstanding element of wilderness areas is primary forests. Wilderness is often understood as untouched nature, unchanged by human intervention. For visitors, wilderness resembles a counter-world, enabling them to escape from everyday life. The present study investigates whether forestry activities have an effect on the attractiveness of primary forests for wilderness tourism. This question is answered based on a case study in the Făgăraş Mountains (Southern Carpathians, Romania). The findings show that primary forests are a unique selling point in tourism. Forestry activities are associated with direct (loss of biodiversity) and indirect (change of target group) effects. Forestry activities not only cause changes in forests as a tourism attractor, but also change the attractor’s contexts, by rendering access difficult or by destroying hiking trails. This paper makes theoretical and practical contributions. From a theoretical point of view, it reflects the concept of wilderness tourism and highlights the importance of contexts (i.e., access paths) for the attractiveness of wild forests. From a practical point of view, it highlights the importance of distinguishing various target groups and different degrees of naturalness to maintain a nuanced portfolio of recreational opportunities in wild forests, for example by referring to established management tools like the recreation opportunity spectrum. Swearing in Sport and Exercise: Development and Validation of a New Questionnaire

Swearing, a highly emotive form of expression, has recently attracted growing interest from researchers. Yet, swearing is still largely unexamined as a form of self-talk among professional athletes, coaches, and casual exercisers. This study aims to fill that gap by creating and validating the Use of Swear Words in Sport and Exercise Questionnaire (USWSEQ), an innovative instrument intended to assess how often athletes, coaches, and recreational exercisers utilize common swear words. The questionnaire was administered to 513 participants and underwent exploratory (n = 333) and confirmatory (n = 180) factor analyses to evaluate its content structure, reliability, and validity. Results confirmed a robust two-factor model: (1) Self/Other Degradation, and (2) Situational Swearing. Notably, the study emphasizes the complexity involved in researching language, because swear words can be semantically ambiguous, pragmatically flexible, and deeply embedded in culture. These attributes present challenges for conventional psychometric methods and highlight the importance of function-based and context-aware frameworks. Full article
