The Apple TV+ series Severance (2022–present) offers a dystopian portrayal of workplace life that intensifies real-world dynamics of control, boundary management, and identity regulation. This paper analyzes Severance as a speculative case study in organizational theory, treating the show’s fictional world as a site for conceptual reflection. Drawing on critical management studies and labor process theory, we examine how mechanisms of control, the regulation of work–life boundaries, and the fragmentation of autonomy and subjectivity are depicted in extreme form. We argue that fiction—particularly speculative satire—can serve as a tool of theoretical production, not merely illustration. Rather than restating familiar critiques, Severance allows us to see workplace norms with renewed clarity, surfacing the moral and psychological consequences of surveillance, coercion, and instrumentalized consent. A methodological note outlines our interpretive approach to narrative fiction, and a discussion of implications situates the analysis within broader debates about organizational ethics, resilience, and critique. Background: Faced with the profound impact of major infectious diseases on public life and economic development, humans have long sought to understand disease transmission and intervention strategies. To better explore the impact of individuals’ different coping behaviors—triggered by changes in their psychological security due to public information and external environmental changes—on the spread to infectious diseases, the model will place greater emphasis on quantifying psychological factors to make it more aligned with real-world situations. Methods: To better understand the interplay between information dissemination and disease transmission, we propose a two-layer network model that incorporates psychological safety factors. Results: Our model reveals key insights into disease transmission dynamics: (1) active defense behaviors help reduce both disease spread and information diffusion; (2) passive resistance behaviors expand disease transmission and may trigger recurrence but enhance information spread; (3) high-timeliness, low-fuzziness information reduces the peak of the initial infection but does not significantly curb overall disease spread, and the rapid dissemination of disease-related information is most effective in limiting the early stages of transmission; and (4) community structures in information networks can effectively curb the spread of infectious diseases. Conclusions: These findings offer valuable theoretical support for public health strategies and disease prevention after government information release. Full article

This review examines advancements in smart home security through the integration of home automation technologies. Various security systems, including surveillance cameras, smart locks, and motion sensors, are analyzed, highlighting their effectiveness in enhancing home security. These systems enable users to monitor and control their homes in real-time, providing an additional layer of security. The document also examines how these security systems can enhance the quality of life for users by providing greater convenience and control over their domestic environment. The ability to receive instant alerts and access video recordings from anywhere allows users to respond quickly to unexpected situations, thereby increasing their sense of security and well-being. Background/Objectives: End-of-life care is a vital part of nursing education that has been overlooked until recent years. Advance care planning should be incorporated into the prelicensure nursing curriculum to build student nurses’ confidence in aiding patients and families with their preferred future care plans. Advance care planning tools, such as the Advance Health Care Directive (AHCD) and Five Wishes, provide experiential learning opportunities that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world patient advocacy. In this study, students were asked to complete either the AHCD or Five Wishes document as though planning for their own end-of-life care, encouraging personal reflection and professional insight. Embedding these assignments into nursing education strengthens students’ confidence in facilitating end-of-life discussions. This study applied Kolb’s experiential learning theory, including concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation, to explore student nurses’ perspectives on the Advance Health Care Directive and Five Wishes assignments, as well as their understanding of end-of-life care. Methods: This study used an exploratory–descriptive qualitative design featuring one open-ended question to collect students’ views on the assignments. Results: The final sample comprised 67 prelicensure student nurses from Bachelor of Science and Entry-Level Master’s programs. The Advance Health Care Directive and/or Five Wishes assignment enhanced students’ understanding of end-of-life decision-making. Conclusions: It is essential to complete the assignment and immerse oneself in an end-of-life situation to grasp patients’ perspectives and concerns regarding when to engage in difficult conversations with their patients. Forest fire detection is an essential application in environmental surveillance since wildfires cause devastating damage to ecosystems, human life, and property every year. The effective and accurate detection of fire is necessary to allow for timely response and efficient management of disasters. Traditional techniques for fire detection often experience false alarms and delayed responses in various environmental situations. Therefore, developing robust, intelligent, and real-time detection systems has emerged as a central challenge in remote sensing and computer vision research communities. Despite recent achievements in deep learning, current forest fire detection models still face issues with generalizability, lightweight deployment, and accuracy trade-offs. In order to overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel technique (FireNet-KD) that makes use of knowledge distillation, a method that maps the learning of hard models (teachers) to a light and efficient model (student). We specifically utilize two opposing teacher networks: a Vision Transformer (ViT), which is popular for its global attention and contextual learning ability, and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is esteemed for its spatial locality and inductive biases. These teacher models instruct the learning of a Swin Transformer-based student model that provides hierarchical feature extraction and computational efficiency through shifted window self-attention, and is thus particularly well suited for scalable forest fire detection. By combining the strengths of ViT and CNN with distillation into the Swin Transformer, the FireNet-KD model outperforms state-of-the-art methods with significant improvements. Experimental results show that the FireNet-KD model obtains a precision of 95.16%, recall of 99.61%, F1-score of 97.34%, and mAP@50 of 97.31%, outperforming the existing models. These results prove the effectiveness of FireNet-KD in improving both detection accuracy and model efficiency for forest fire detection. Full article

Background: Asparaginase (ASPase) plays an important role in the therapy of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Serum ASPase activity (SAA) can be modified and even abolished by host immune responses; therefore, current treatment guidelines recommend to monitor SAA during treatment administration. The SAA monitoring schedule needs to be carefully planned to reduce the number of samples without hampering the possibility of measuring pharmacokinetics (PK) parameters in individual patients. Complex modelling approaches, not easily applicable in common practice, have been applied in previous studies to estimate ASPase PK parameters. This study aimed to estimate PK parameters by using a simplified approach suitable for real-world settings with limited sampling. Methods: Our study was based on 434 patients treated in Italy within the AIEOP-BFM ALL 2009 trial. During the induction phase, patients received two doses of pegylated ASPase and were monitored with blood sampling at five time points, including time 0. PK parameters were estimated by using the individually available SAA measurements with simple modifications of the classical non-compartmental PK analysis. We also took the opportunity to develop and validate a series of limited sampling models to predict ASPase exposure. Results: During the induction phase, average ASPase activity at day 7 was 1380 IU/L after the first dose and 1948 IU/L after the second dose; therapeutic SAA levels (>100 IU/L) were maintained until day 33 in 90.1% of patients. The average AUC and clearance were 46,937 IU/L × day and 0.114 L/day/m2, respectively. The database was analyzed for possible associations of PK parameters with biological characteristics of the patients, finding only a limited dependence on sex, age and risk score; however, these differences were not sufficient to allow any dose or schedule adjustments. Thereafter the possibility of further sampling reduction by using simple linear models to estimate the AUC was also explored. The most simple model required only two samplings 7 days after each ASPase dose, with the AUC being proportional to the sum of the two measured activities A(7) and A(21), calculated by the formula AUC = 14.1 × [A(7) + A(21)]. This model predicts the AUC with 6% average error and 35% maximum error compared to the AUC estimated with all available measures. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the feasibility of a direct estimation of PK parameters in a real-life situation with limited and variable blood sampling schedules and also offers a simplified method and formulae easily applicable in clinical practice while maintaining a reliable pharmacokinetic monitoring. The growing prevalence of AI chatbots in everyday life has prompted educators to explore their potential applications in promoting student success, including support for classroom engagement and communication. This exploratory study emerged from semester-long observations of class participation apprehensions in an introductory educational psychology course, examining how chatbots might scaffold students toward active and independent classroom contribution. Four students experiencing situational participation anxiety voluntarily participated in a pilot intervention using AI chatbots as virtual peer partners. Following comprehensive training in AI use and prompt design given to the entire class, participants employed systematic consultation frameworks for managing classroom discourse trepidations. Data collection involved regular instructor meetings documenting student experiences, challenges, and developmental trajectories through qualitative analysis emphasizing contextual interpretation. While students reported general satisfaction with chatbot integration, implementation revealed three critical complexities: temporal misalignment between AI consultation and real-time discussion dynamics; feedback inflation creating disconnects between AI reassurance and classroom reception; and unintended progression from supportive scaffolding toward technological dependency. Individual outcomes varied, with some students developing independence while others increased reliance on external validation. AI-assisted participation interventions demonstrate both promise and limitations, requiring careful consideration of classroom dynamics. Effective implementation necessitates rehearsal-based rather than validation-focused applications, emphasizing human mentorship and community-centered approaches that preserve educational autonomy while leveraging technological scaffolding strategically. In social networks like community Question-Answering (cQA) services, members interact with each other by asking and answering each other’s questions. This way they find counsel and solutions to very specific real-life situations. Thus, it is safe to say that community fellows log into this kind of social network with the goal of satisfying information needs that cannot be readily resolved via traditional web searches. And in order to expedite this process, these platforms also allow registered, and many times unregistered, internauts to browse their archives. As a means of encouraging fruitful interactions, these websites need to be efficient when displaying contextualized/personalized material and when connecting unresolved questions to people willing to help. Here, demographic factors (i.e., gender) together with frontier deep neural networks have proved to be instrumental in adequately overcoming these challenges. In fact, current approaches have demonstrated that it is perfectly plausible to achieve high gender classification rates by inspecting profile images or textual interactions. This work advances this body of knowledge by leveraging lexicalized dependency paths to control the level of abstraction across texts. Our qualitative results suggest that cost-efficient approaches exploit distilled frontier deep architectures (i.e., DistillRoBERTa) and coarse-grained semantic information embodied in the first three levels of the respective dependency tree. Our outcomes also indicate that relative/prepositional clauses conveying geographical locations, relationships, and finance yield a marginal contribution when they show up deep in dependency trees. In this paper, a very fast and reliable strategy for load restoration utilizing optimal distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) is developed. The automated network configuration switches can improve the resilience of a microgrid (MG) equipped with a centralized and coordinated energy management system (EMS). The EMS has the authority to reconfigure the distribution network to fulfil high priority loads in the entire network, at the lowest cost, while maintaining the voltage at desirable bounds. In the case of islanded operation, the EMS is responsible for serving the high priority loads, including the establishment of new MGs, if necessary. This paper discusses the main functionality of the EMS in both grid-connected and islanded operation modes of MGs. The proposed model is developed based on a mixed-integer quadratically constrained program (MIQCP), including an optimal power flow (OPF) problem to minimize the power losses in normal operation and the load shedding in islanded operation, while keeping voltage and capacity constraints. The proposed framework is implemented on a modified IEEE 33-bus test system and the results show that the model is fast and accurate enough to be utilized in real-life situations without a loss of accuracy. Living Labs are collaborative, real-world environments for co-creating sustainable innovations that rely on trust-based engagement with local communities. However, while many studies emphasise scaling up or out of such innovations, the potential for achieving qualitative transformations in relation to local values (“scaling deep”) remains underexplored. In response, we adopted a design ethnographic approach that blended immersive, reflexive ethnographic methods with the participatory co-design characteristics of Living Labs. This approach involved closely partnering with a local community champion through participant observation and co-creation workshops embedded in the community’s daily life. Our findings show that community champions acted as co-creators and mediators, building trust and aligning Living Lab activities with local values through a relational ethic of care. By immersing the research team in day-to-day community life via shared activities and open dialogue, champions enabled situated learning about local needs, thereby facilitating “scaling deep” through mutual trust and understanding. Overall, the study demonstrates that scaling deep in Living Labs hinges on embodied researcher–community partnerships in mutual care and shared responsibility. The study contributes to the Living Lab literature by illustrating how community champions can bridge understanding about sustainable transformations through relational engagement. Full article

To develop interventions and policies to promote healthy and sustainable diets during times of crisis, it is important to understand how populations respond to such situations based on real-life examples. Using the recent COVID-19 pandemic as a case study to identify risk and protective factors for such situations, we implemented the first longitudinal mixed-methods approach of this topic to date. Data were collected from a sample of UK parents (stratified for gender and socioeconomic status) through two surveys and a set of focus groups during the pandemic. The focus groups identified multifaceted drivers of change linked to capability (e.g., shielding), opportunity (e.g., time, food access and availability), and motivation (e.g., reflective motivation, stress and mental health challenges) barriers. High levels of COVID-19 stress were linked with less healthy and sustainable diets in the survey results, while higher social cohesion, reflective motivation to consume healthy foods, and positive coping scores were protective, and linked to healthier and more sustainable diets. A range of coping strategies were identified, including home cooking and meal planning, which could provide a basis for future intervention development to reduce stress, maintain wellbeing, and improve dietary outcomes in future crisis situations. Background: Competency in providing high-quality, comprehensive patient care is essential for newly qualified dentists. Dental curricula are designed to equip graduates with necessary skills to develop competencies. Outplacement training has been incorporated into most dental curricula to provide broader clinical experience in a real-world situation. Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess (1) the perceived confidence of final-year dental students (FYDSs) at an Australian university with reference to the Australian Dental Council (ADC) professional competencies for newly qualified dentists; (2) the association between perceived confidence and the timing of outplacement training; and (3) students’ perceptions on outplacement training in developing their competencies. Two online surveys were administered to a cohort of FYDSs at the end of the first and second trimesters. ‘Survey 1’ was based on the ADC competency requirements (2022) and assessed aims 1 and 2. The five domains assessed were (1) communication and leadership; (2) critical thinking; (3) health promotion; (4) scientific and clinical knowledge; and (5) person-centred care. ‘Survey 2’ assessed students’ perception on outplacement training and was administered towards the completion of their outplacement to assess aim 3. Results: Students’ perceived competency levels were high across all domains. Those with prior tertiary education were more confident in communication and leadership, health promotion, and scientific and clinical knowledge than students with secondary qualifications. The perceived confidence in professional competencies among FYDSs had no significant association (p > 0.05) with the location or the sequence of outplacement. The thematic analysis of survey 2 responses reported the guidance and constructive feedback received from supervisors while managing cases in a real-life setup as a significant contributor to their confidence development. Conclusions: FYDSs reported a satisfactory level of perceived confidence in professional competencies. Both in-house training and outplacement equally improve the levels of competency development. FYDSs perceive outplacement training as a positive integral component in the development of skills. Full article

Background: Professional knowledge and experience of healthcare organization went through continuous change and development with the progression of COVID-19 pandemic waves. However, carefully developed guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) remained largely unchanged regardless of the epidemic situation, with the largest change being a more prominent bioethical approach. It would be possible to further improve the quality of CPR by systematic data collection, the facilitation of prospective studies, and further development of the methodology based on this evidence, as well as by providing information and developing provisions on interventions with expected poor outcomes, and ultimately by refusing resuscitation. Methods: This study involved the critical collection and analysis of literary data originating from the Web of Science and PubMed databases concerning bioethical aspects and the efficacy of CPR during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: According to the current professional recommendation of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), CPR should be initiated immediately in case of cardiac arrest in the absence of an exclusionary circumstance. One such circumstance is explicit refusal of CPR by a well-informed patient, which in practice takes the form of a prior declaration. ERC prescribes the following conjunctive conditions for do-not-attempt CPR (DNACPR) declarations: present, real, and applicable. It is recommended to take the declaration as a part of complex end-of-life planning, with the corresponding documentation available in an electronic database. The pandemic has brought significant changes in resuscitation practice at both lay and professional levels as well. Incidence of out-of-hospital resuscitation (OHCA) did not differ compared to the previous period, while cardiac deaths in public places almost halved during the epidemic (p < 0.001) as did the use of AEDs (p = 0.037). The number of resuscitations performed by bystanders and by the emergency medical service (EMS) also showed a significant decrease (p = 0.001), and the most important interventions (defibrillation, first adrenaline time) suffered a significant delay. Secondary survival until hospital discharge thus decreased by 50% during the pandemic period. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic provided a significant impetus to the revision of guidelines. While detailed methodology has changed only slightly compared to the previous procedures, the DNACPR declaration regarding self-determination is mentioned in the context of complex end-of-life planning. The issue of safe environment has come to the fore for both lay and trained resuscitators. Future Directions: Prospective evaluation of standardized methods can further improve the patient’s autonomy and quality of life. Since clinical data are controversial, further prospective controlled studies are needed to evaluate the real hazards of aerosol-generating procedures. Full article

Background: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a debilitating mental health condition characterized by emotional dysregulation and interpersonal dysfunction, with perceived social rejection exacerbating these issues. Emerging evidence suggests that a single session of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) may decrease the unique tendency of BPD patients to feel rejected even when socially included during a laboratory task. Objectives: This protocol outlines a double-blind, sham-controlled study evaluating the longitudinal effects of repeated anodal tDCS over the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) on rejection-related emotions (RRE) during real-life social interactions in individuals with BPD. Methods: Sixty BPD patients will be randomized to receive real or sham tDCS across 10 daily sessions, coupled with an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol capturing emotional and behavioral responses to real-life social interactions over four timepoints: baseline, during treatment, ten days post-treatment, and three months post-treatment. Primary outcomes include changes in RRE, with exploratory analyses examining feelings of social connection, aggressive tendencies, trust toward others, and interpersonal and affective dynamics. Multilevel modeling will assess temporal and group-level effects. Expected Results and Impact: This study aims to establish the efficacy of tDCS in reducing BPD patients’ negative emotional response in real-life social situations and to determine whether such effects are maintained in time. The findings could advance the clinical application of tDCS as an adjunctive intervention to alleviate social–emotional impairments in BPD, addressing gaps in current treatment approaches and guiding future research into the neural mechanisms of social emotion regulation. Background/Objectives: Midwives are crucial in addressing complex women’s health issues, such as infertility, breastfeeding challenges, and neonatal health. An elective pilot course, “Educational, Counseling, and Therapeutic Approaches in Midwifery”, was designed to enhance midwifery students’ knowledge and skills in communication, counseling, and therapeutic skills via e-learning approaches. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining pre- and post-testing to assess students’ skill development. In addition, guided reflective discussions were based on video and audio recordings of pre-prepared role-playing scenarios. Students worked in pairs, alternating roles as midwives and patients, to engage in real-life situations. During the reflective discussions, students critically analyzed their experiences of the consultation process, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and reflecting on what went well and what could be improved in future interactions. Results: The initial findings revealed that students were overconfident in their skills, but through role-playing and reflective discussions, they recognized gaps in their knowledge and developed a deeper understanding of essential competencies. Conclusions: The elective pilot course proved effective in enhancing students’ knowledge and skills as counselors. These results emphasize the importance of integrating structured e-learning and educational strategies into midwifery training to improve care and health outcomes. Full article
