Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease wherein the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue leads to adverse health outcomes, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders. Obesity also impacts both the risk and the clinical prognosis of heart failure (HF). The accumulation of adipose tissue results in metabolic dysregulation, including increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines. These alterations are strongly associated with the development and progression of HF. Another significant comorbidity in patients with HF is sarcopenia, characterized by progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, affecting the quality of life. The study aims to critically synthesize the mechanisms by which modern pharmacological treatments—sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists, and dual GIPR/GLP-1R agonists—modulate body mass composition, and to analyze the specific implications of these changes (e.g., visceral fat reduction versus lean mass loss) for heart failure (HF) prognosis and management. Background: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) refers to a spectrum of symptoms resulting from dysfunctions of the peripheral sensory, motor, and autonomic neurons. PN is associated with significant balance impairments and an increased risk of falls, contributing to reduced functional independence and quality of life. Although diabetic PN has been extensively investigated, there remains a lack of synthesized evidence regarding rehabilitation approaches for individuals with non-diabetic PN. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of stabilometric platforms incorporating virtual reality (VR) and feedback (FB) in improving balance and related outcomes in patients with PN of various etiologies. Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251086625). Seven major databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, Web of Science, Springer, and Wiley) were searched from inception to April 2025. Studies including adult patients with non-diabetic PN undergoing balance rehabilitation using stabilometric platforms with VR and FB were considered. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the PEDro scale, RoB2, and ROBINS-I V2 tools. Results: A total of six studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing 133 participants with non-diabetic PN. Interventions involving specialized balance training platforms incorporating VR and FB demonstrated significant improvements in both static and dynamic balance and postural control, as well as a reduction in the risk of falling. These systems also showed favorable adherence rates to rehabilitation programs. However, variability in intervention protocols and outcome measures limited the ability to perform direct comparisons across studies. Conclusions: The use of stabilometric platforms appears to be a promising approach for balance rehabilitation in patients with non-diabetic PN. Despite the limited number of included studies, the results support their integration into rehabilitation programs for this patient population. Further large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to establish standardized protocols and confirm long-term efficacy. Full article

Ammonia (NH3) is a major anthropogenic pollutant originating from agricultural activity, particularly livestock operations. NH3 emissions from livestock slurry storage pose risks to environmental quality and human health. Reducing NH3 emissions aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3, SDG 12, SDG 14, and SDG 15. This study evaluates the performance of the commercially available SOP® LAGOON additive under real-scale farm conditions for mitigating NH3 emissions. Two adjacent slurry storage tanks of a dairy farm in Northern Italy were monitored from 27 May to 7 September: one treated with SOP® LAGOON and one left untreated (serving as a control). In the first month, the treated tank showed a 77% reduction in NH3 emissions. Emissions from the treated tank remained consistently lower than those from the control throughout the monitoring period, reaching an 87% reduction relative to the baseline levels by the end of the period. The results suggest that SOP® LAGOON is an effective and scalable strategy for reducing NH3 emissions from liquid manure storage, with practical implications for farmers and policy makers in regard to designing sustainable manure management practices. Background: Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic, immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. While a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) remains the cornerstone of treatment, inadequate follow-up can lead to persistent symptoms, nutritional deficiencies, and long-term complications. Aim: This narrative review summarizes best practices in celiac disease follow-up, with emphasis on multidisciplinary, nutritional, clinical, and preventive care strategies to optimize long-term outcomes. Main Findings: High-quality follow-up requires coordinated care involving gastroenterologists, dietitians, primary care providers, and other specialists. Nutritional challenges of the GFD include high cost, limited fortification, suboptimal nutrient content, and increased risk of obesity and metabolic dysfunction. Patients also face psychosocial and behavioral burdens such as anxiety, social isolation, and disordered eating. Evidence-based strategies for follow-up include structured clinical and serologic monitoring, laboratory assessments, bone health evaluation, cancer risk reduction, and preventive care. Novel tools such as gluten immunogenic peptide testing, digital health platforms, and artificial intelligence are emerging as adjuncts to clinical management. Implications: Structured, patient-centered follow-up that integrates medical, nutritional, and psychosocial dimensions is essential to achieving mucosal healing, maintaining long-term health, and improving quality of life in individuals with CeD. Acute inflammatory visceral pain (AIVP) is a prevalent yet challenging clinical condition associated with inflammatory diseases, characterized by diffuse pain that often escalates into nausea, vomiting, and systemic autonomic disturbances. The absence of effective and patient-centered therapies remains a significant clinical challenge. While dexmedetomidine (Dex) has demonstrated promising analgesic effects, its conventional intravenous administration involves slow infusion, heightening risks of infection and compromising patient comfort and compliance. Here, we present a breakthrough strategy using a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel and microneedle-based transdermal system for Dex delivery to enhance clinical practicality. We successfully fabricated Dex-loaded HA hydrogel microneedles (MN/Dex), enabling efficient skin penetration and controlled drug release. Comprehensive biosafety evaluations, including skin irritation, cytotoxicity, and hemolysis assays, confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of the HA hydrogel microneedle system (HA-MN). In the acetic-acid-induced AIVP model, MN/Dex not only produced significant and sustained reduction in visceral and somatic hyperalgesia but also maintained normal physiological activity, avoiding sedation burden, preserving feeding behavior, and supporting natural mobility. MN/Dex offers a minimally invasive, easy-to-administer, and well-tolerated alternative to intravenous therapy, with the potential to transform outpatient management and improve quality of life for patients suffering from AIVP. This advanced delivery platform bridges a critical translational gap in pain management, combining efficacy with outstanding clinical adaptability. Full article

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used plastics globally, and its poor post-consumer management poses serious risks to the environment and human health. Tackling this issue requires innovative strategies that combine recycling and sustainable manufacturing with the principles of the circular economy. This study addresses this challenge by investigating the use of recycled PET, along with reverse logistics, to produce a cell phone holder through additive manufacturing (AM). Characterization was performed using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, intrinsic viscosity measurements, and mechanical tensile tests. Environmental and circular performance were evaluated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI), comparing production with 100% virgin PET resin and 100% recycled PET resin. The results showed that the recycled route achieved a tensile strength of 37.7 MPa, with 7.6% strain before rupture, and thermal analysis confirmed its stability during processing. The LCA revealed a 12% reduction in overall environmental impacts when recycled PET replaced virgin resin, with electricity consumption identified as the main critical point. The circularity assessment suggested potential savings of up to 70% if recycled PET products are reprocessed at the end of their life cycles. These findings demonstrate that combining open-loop recycling with additive manufacturing (AM) can effectively turn waste into high-quality, value-added products, advancing circularity and sustainable material innovation. Background/Objectives: Nutrition during the reproductive years shapes women’s immediate health, fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and long-term offspring well-being. This position paper narratively synthesizes and critically appraises evidence on how dietary patterns, macro-/micronutrients, and supplementation influence women’s health, female fertility, and reproductive outcomes, to inform practical recommendations. Methods: We narratively reviewed recent reviews, cohort studies, clinical trials, and public-health guidance on macronutrients, key micronutrients, dietary patterns (with emphasis on the Mediterranean diet), ultra-processed food (UPF) intake, and targeted supplementation relevant to menstrual, metabolic, cardiovascular, skeletal, and reproductive outcomes. Results: Balanced, diverse diets rich in whole and minimally processed foods support hormonal regulation, ovulatory function, healthy gestation, and chronic-disease risk reduction. Priority nutrients include iron, folate, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, vitamin B12, and long-chain omega-3s (DHA), with supplementation considered when dietary intake or bioavailability is inadequate. Evidence consistently links Mediterranean-style eating to improved metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, IVF success, lower gestational diabetes risk, and favorable neonatal outcomes. High UPF consumption is associated with poorer diet quality, inflammation, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and potential reproductive impairment, warranting a reduction in favor of nutrient-dense foods. Diet also influences cardiovascular and bone health through effects on lipids, glycemia, blood pressure, and mineral/vitamin status, with fiber-rich carbohydrates, unsaturated fats (notably olive oil), and adequate calcium–vitamin D emerging as central levers. Conclusions: For women of childbearing age, a Mediterranean-aligned, minimally processed dietary pattern—tailored to individual needs and complemented by prudent use of folate, iron, vitamin D, calcium, B12, and DHA when indicated—offers robust benefits across reproductive, metabolic, cardiovascular, and skeletal domains. Public-health actions should improve access to healthy foods, curb UPF marketing, and embed personalized nutrition counseling in routine care; further longitudinal research from preconception through postpartum is needed. Hypertension (HTN) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are significant global health burdens, with microalbuminuria (MA) serving as a key early marker of renal damage and cardiovascular risk. While nutritional interventions are pivotal for management, the evidence for specific nutrients is often complex and inconsistent, creating challenges for clinical guidance. This review critically evaluates current evidence on the interaction among macronutrients, micronutrients, and established dietary approaches and their influence on the development and course of HTN and MA. Strong consensus is present regarding sodium restriction, increased intakes of potassium, and the implementation of dietary patterns like Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and the Mediterranean diet to improve blood pressure and renal outcomes. Evidence favors protein moderation (approximately 0.8 g/kg/day), especially from plant sources, and emphasizes carbohydrate quality (e.g., high fiber, low glycemic index) over absolute quantity. The role of micronutrients is more nuanced; maintaining vitamin D sufficiency is protective, but intervention trials for many supplements, including B vitamins and antioxidant vitamins (C and E), have yielded inconsistent results. Several minerals, such as iron and selenium, exhibit a U-shaped risk curve where both deficiency and excess are detrimental, highlighting the risks of unselective supplementation. Ideal nutrition care prioritizes holistic dietary patterns over a focus on single nutrients. Clinical guidance should be founded on sodium reduction and potassium-rich foods, with personalized recommendations for protein and micronutrient supplementation based on an individual’s specific cardiovascular and renal profile. Future research must target nutrients with conflicting evidence to establish clear, evidence-based intake guidelines. Full article

Background/Objective: Cancer significantly impairs physical function and quality of life. Exercise has gained recognition as a therapeutic strategy; however, its long-term efficacy in terms of multidimensional outcomes in patients with cancer remains underexplored. This review aimed to evaluate and summarize the available evidence regarding the effects of multicomponent exercise programs on pain and psychosocial outcomes in individuals with cancer. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022321183). Comprehensive searches were performed in MEDLINE, OVID, LILACS, Scopus, PEDro, OTseeker, The Cochrane Library, EBSCO, and Google Scholar, without date restrictions. Search terms included “exercise” and “cancer.” Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the PEDro scale. Results: Sixteen randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. Multicomponent exercise programs combining aerobic, resistance, and flexibility training significantly improved muscle strength, balance, and quality of life. Several studies reported meaningful reductions in pain intensity and interference, whereas others found no significant changes. Overall, exercise interventions demonstrated superior effects compared with usual care or educational controls across physical and psychosocial outcomes. Conclusions: Multicomponent exercise is a safe and feasible intervention for adults with cancer, including those with advanced disease or complex clinical profiles. Evidence supports consistent benefits in physical function and quality of life, with partially consistent yet favorable effects on pain. Programs integrating multiple exercise modalities appear most effective and should be considered as part of comprehensive oncological care to enhance therapeutic outcomes and long-term well-being. The use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) for spraying coffee crops has expanded due to their practicality and cost reduction. This study aimed to evaluate spray rate effects on coffee crops using two RPA (T10 and T20). The study was conducted on a commercial farm with 10-year-old Coffea arabica Catucaí Amarelo. Two aircraft were used, T1 (hydraulic) and T2 (rotary nozzles). The application rates were established at 25 and 50 L ha−1. The application quality was obtained by attaching Water-Sensitive Papers (WSPs) to the upper, middle, and lower parts of coffee trees, inside and outside the plants, in addition to the inter-row areas. The statistical Nested Crossed Design was applied to analyze the dataset for the experimental field with three distinct factors (RPA, application rate, and WSP position) and four replications. WSP position was the most determinant factor across all design effects, followed by RPA. The external layers of leaves received more droplets than internal parts of coffee trees. The WSP position information indicated that no droplets reached the middle interior parts of the plants or underneath them. The inter-row positions (soil) received significantly more drops than the coffee plants, regardless of application rate or RPA. The potential for drift to the soil was high in both applications. The Potential Drift Risks were more significant for RPA T2. Future studies may deepen understanding of the relationship between coverage and specific application models for coffee farming, as traditional application methods require improvements. Full article

Diet influences brain health through many connected metabolic and molecular pathways, and these effects are stronger in obesity. This review links diet quality with cognitive decline and dementia risk. Ultra-processed, high-fat, high-sugar diets drive weight gain, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. These changes trigger brain oxidative stress, reduce DNA repair, deplete NAD+, disturb sirtuin/PARP balance, and alter epigenetic marks. Gut dysbiosis and leaky gut add inflammatory signals, weaken the blood–brain barrier, and disrupt microglia. Mediterranean and MIND diets, rich in plants, fiber, polyphenols, and omega-3 fats, slow cognitive decline and lower dementia risk. Trials show extra benefit when diet improves alongside exercise and vascular risk control. Specific nutrients can help in certain settings. DHA and EPA support brain health in people with low omega-3 status or early disease. B-vitamins slow brain shrinkage in mild cognitive impairment when homocysteine is high. Vitamin D correction is beneficial when levels are low. A practical plan emphasizes healthy eating and good metabolic control. It includes screening for deficiencies and supporting the microbiome with fiber and fermented foods. Mechanism-based add-ons, such as NAD+ boosters, deserve testing in lifestyle-focused trials. Together, these measures may reduce diet-related brain risk across the life span. At the same time, artificial intelligence can integrate diet exposures, adiposity, metabolic markers, multi-omics, neuroimaging, and digital phenotyping. This can identify high-risk phenotypes, refine causal links along the diet–obesity–brain axis, and personalize nutrition-plus-lifestyle interventions. It can also highlight safety, equity, and privacy considerations. Translationally, a pattern-first strategy can support early screening and personalized risk reduction by integrating diet quality, adiposity, vascular risk, micronutrient status, and microbiome-responsive behaviors. AI can aid measurement and risk stratification when developed with privacy, equity, and interpretability safeguards, but clinical decisions should remain mechanism-aligned and trial-anchored. This paper presents an approach to risk mitigation strategies through seismic vulnerability of buildings’ non-structural elements (NSEs) proposing practical and accessible strategies for risk reduction aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework. NSEs play a crucial role in the overall safety and resilience of built environments during seismic events. However, their vulnerability is often underestimated, despite their potential to cause significant human, economic, and social losses. Moreover, NSEs remain widely overlooked in both seismic risk assessments and mitigation strategies, including risk education. This issue directly impacts multiple SDGs. NSE damage exacerbates poverty by increasing financial burdens due to repair and recovery costs. It also affects access to quality education, not only by disrupting school infrastructure but also by limiting access to knowledge, which is essential for strengthening the coping capacity of communities. Furthermore, seismic risk mitigation must be inclusive to reduce inequalities, ensuring that safety is not a privilege but a right for all. Lastly, NSE vulnerability directly influences the resilience and sustainability of cities and communities, affecting urban safety and disaster preparedness. Simple mitigation actions, such as proper anchoring, reinforcement, or improved design guidelines, could drastically reduce their vulnerability and related consequences. Background/Objectives: Certain components of natural products help maintain the oral microbiota balance, thereby promoting oral health. This study aimed to identify natural components with anticariogenic properties by analyzing evidence from in vivo studies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The literature search was performed across multiple databases and included English-language studies published between 2013 and 2025. The review included intervention and comparative studies that examined the effects of dietary habits involving natural components in participants of any age, with or without dental caries. Results: A total of 77 studies were included in the review, most of which were clinical trials conducted in pediatric populations. To assess the impact of the interventions, most studies measured outcomes such as Streptococcus mutans levels, dental caries incidence, and salivary pH, among other parameters. The most frequently studied components included probiotics, plant extracts, sugar substitutes, propolis, arginine, dairy products, among others. Significant effects were most reported on biological risk factors (72.8%). In addition, 16.9% of the studies reported a statistically significant reduction in clinically diagnosed dental caries. Conclusions: This review identified preliminary evidence suggesting that certain natural compounds may play a role in modulating cariogenic factors. However, further high-quality studies are needed to strengthen the evidence base and confirm these findings. The protocol for this review was registered on the Open Science Framework platform. Background: Diabetes and mental health conditions frequently co-occur, with depression and anxiety affecting up to 20–30% of people with diabetes. These comorbidities worsen glycemic control, adherence, and quality of life, yet mental health is often neglected in diabetes care. Integrating mental health services into diabetes management is recommended by international organizations to improve patient outcomes. Objectives: To systematically review the evidence on integrated mental health interventions in diabetes care, compared to usual diabetes care, in improving patient outcomes (glycemic control, mental health, adherence, quality of life). Methods: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Scopus (2000 through July 2024) for studies of diabetes care integrating mental health support (e.g., collaborative care, co-location, stepped care, or digital interventions). Inclusion criteria were controlled trials or cohort studies involving individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes receiving an integrated mental health intervention, with outcomes on glycemic control and/or mental health. Two reviewers independently screened titles/abstracts and full texts, with disagreements resolved by consensus. Data on study design, population, intervention components, and outcomes were extracted. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane or appropriate tools. Results: Out of records identified, 64 studies met inclusion criteria (primarily randomized controlled trials). Integrated care models consistently improved depression and anxiety outcomes and diabetes-specific distress, and yielded modest but significant reductions in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) compared to usual care. Many interventions also enhanced treatment adherence and self-management behaviors. For example, collaborative care trials showed greater depression remission rates and small HbA1c improvements (~0.3–0.5% absolute reduction) relative to standard care. Co-located care in diabetes clinics was associated with reduced diabetes distress, depression scores, and HbA1c over 12 months. Digital health integrations (telepsychiatry, online cognitive-behavioral therapy) improved psychological outcomes and adherence, with some reporting slight improvements in glycemic control. Integrated approaches often increased uptake of mental health services (e.g., higher referral completion rates) and showed high patient satisfaction. A subset of studies reported fewer emergency visits and hospitalizations with integrated care, and one economic analysis found collaborative care cost-effective in primary care settings. Conclusions: Integrating mental health into diabetes care leads to better mental health outcomes and modest improvements in glycemic control, without adverse effects. Heterogeneity across studies is noted, but the overall evidence supports multidisciplinary, patient-centered care models to address the psychosocial needs of people with diabetes. Healthcare systems should prioritize implementing and scaling integrated care, accompanied by provider training and policy support, to improve outcomes and bridge the persistent treatment gap. Future research should focus on long-term effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and strategies to reach diverse populations. Full article

Introduction: Cough is a common reflex that serves a protective role, but when persistent, it can severely affect patients’ quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, current treatment options remain limited. Traditional antitussives such as codeine and dextromethorphan present notable side effects, underscoring the need for safer and more effective alternatives. Methods: This study evaluated and compared the antitussive efficacy of classic (codeine, cloperastine, dextromethorphan, levodropropizine) and novel (gefapixant) agents using a citric acid-induced cough model in guinea pigs. Animals were pretreated with the selected compounds, and cough frequency, latency to first cough, and cough intensity were assessed using acoustic recordings and quantitative analysis. Results: Codeine, cloperastine, and gefapixant produced a significant reduction in cough frequency and markedly increased latency to the first cough, with comparable efficacy at the highest doses tested. In contrast, dextromethorphan and levodropropizine did not significantly affect these parameters. Additionally, cloperastine, codeine, and gefapixant reduced cough intensity, while none of the treatments significantly altered cough duration. Conclusions: In this preclinical model, cloperastine and gefapixant demonstrated antitussive effects comparable to codeine but without the known narcotic-associated risks. These findings highlight the potential clinical relevance of both centrally and peripherally acting non-opioid alternatives. Continued investigation of these agents may help address the unmet need for safer and more effective cough treatments. Full article
