Background/Objectives: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are the second most common of all facial bone fractures, and conventional treatment represents a challenge even for experienced surgeons. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare Intraoperative Surgical Navigation (ISN) with conventional surgery in the treatment of ZMC fractures. Methods: We reported our systematic review and meta-analysis based on the recommendation of the PRISMA 2020 guideline. The electronic search was conducted on 9 February 2025 in two search engines (PubMed and Web of Science) and two databases (Embase and the Cochrane Library). Randomized controlled trials and observational studies were included. The outcome variables were accuracy, operative time, maximum mouth opening, postoperative stay, amount of bleeding, and cheek numbness. The random-effects model was used for the analysis, and the results were given as mean differences and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI). After duplicate removal, 1961 articles were found. After the selection procedure, five studies were found to be eligible for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between ISN and conventional surgery regarding the outcomes investigated, except in postoperative average deviation of the zygomatic bone. Our results showed an improvement of 0.64 mm [CI: 0.32, 0.92] zygomatic bone deviation when ISN was used. Conclusions: The results suggest that ISN is as effective as the conventional technique in the treatment of ZMC fractures. However, because of the low number of eligible studies, further randomized controlled trials are necessary to strengthen the level of evidence on this matter. Full article

Stroke consequences include hemiparesis and difficulty walking. Several types of canes exist to overcome these alterations, but little data compares the quadripod cane and the rolling cane in hemiparetic patients. The objective of this work is twofold: to determine whether the gait speed—the most often used parameter to assess gait performance—depends on the type of cane, and to establish which spatiotemporal parameters have the most influence. Thirty-four hemiparetic patients performed 10 m walking tests at comfortable and fast speed conditions, using both canes on two different days. To objectively analyze their gait patterns, we used a tri-axial Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)-based system to record the walking signals from which we extracted the gait spatiotemporal parameters. We particularly examined the speed, stride length, and durations of stance, swing, and double support phases. The results showed that hemiparetic patients walked faster with the rolling cane during both speed conditions. These speed increases could be explained by the decrease in the stance phase duration of the affected leg, the decrease in the double support duration, and the increase in cadence. Our findings suggest that the rolling cane allows safe and faster walking. Full article

Physical therapists employ several exercises to alleviate low back pain (LBP). Electromyography (EMG) examination of exercises can monitor muscle activation to help clinicians determine the exercise’s effect on stabilisation, endurance, or strength. This study evaluated surface EMG activity comparison for Flying Squirrel Exercise (FSE) and the novel 3-Point Quadripod Exercise (3-PQE) to find the most effective exercise for stimulating the lumbar multifidus (LM) muscle. The study recruited 64 healthy young females (19–24 years). Raw data were normalized and are expressed as the percentage of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). The test–retest reliability of the EMG recordings was estimated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC3,1). One-way ANOVA was used to statistically analyse and compare the EMG amplitudes during the two exercises. The ICCs for 3-PQE and FSE were 0.94 (SEM, 21.7% MVIC) and 0.87 (SEM, 19.05% MVIC), respectively. The 3-PQE (69 ± 26% MVIC) demonstrated significantly higher activity than did FSE (30 ± 18% MVIC) (F = 15.573, p = 0.001). Thus, 3-PQE might be a feasible strategy for the prevention and rehabilitation of LBP in females. Full article

A walking distance estimation algorithm for cane users is proposed using an inertial sensor unit attached to various positions on the cane. A standard inertial navigation algorithm using an indirect Kalman filter was applied to update the velocity and position of the cane during movement. For quadripod canes, a standard zero-velocity measurement-updating method is proposed. For standard canes, a velocity-updating method based on an inverted pendulum model is proposed. The proposed algorithms were verified by three walking experiments with two different types of canes and different positions of the sensor module. Full article
