Knowledge Sharing: Key to Sustainable Building Construction Implementation

The successful deployment of sustainable building construction (SBC) is connected to sound knowledge sharing. Concerning SBC, knowledge sharing has been identified to directly and indirectly increase innovation, environmental performance, cost saving, regulatory compliance awareness and so on. The necessity of enhancing SBC practice globally has been emphasised by earlier research. Consequently, this study aims to investigate knowledge-sharing elements to enhance SBC in South Africa (SA). Utilising a questionnaire survey, this study elicited data from 281 professionals in the built environment. Data analysis was performed with “descriptive statistics”, the “Kruskal–Wallis H-test”, and “principal component analysis” to determine the principal knowledge-sharing features (KSFs). This study found that “creating public awareness of sustainable practices”, the “content of SBC training, raising awareness of green building products”, “SBC integration in professional certifications”, an “information hub or repository for sustainable construction”, and “mentoring younger professionals in sustainable practices” are the most critical KSFs for SBC deployment. These formed a central cluster, the Green Education Initiative and Eco-Awareness Alliance. The results achieved a reliability test value of 0.956. It was concluded that to embrace the full adoption of SBC, corporate involvement is critical, and all stakeholders must embrace the sustainability paradigm. It is recommended that the principal knowledge-sharing features revealed in this study should be carefully considered to help construction stakeholders in fostering knowledge sharing for a sustainable built environment. Background/Objectives: Health education plays a vital role in training health professionals and caregivers, supporting both prevention and the promotion of self-care. In this context, technology serves as a valuable ally by enabling continuous and flexible learning. Among the various domains of health education, nutrition stands out as a key element in the management of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), helping to prevent malnutrition and enhance patient well-being. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes within a learning pathway focused on food and nutrition in the context of ALS. Methods: This study adopted a longitudinal, quantitative design. The learning pathway, titled “Food and Nutrition in ALS,” consisted of four self-paced and self-instructional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), offered through the Virtual Learning Environment of the Brazilian Health System (AVASUS). Participants included health professionals, caregivers, and patients from all five regions of Brazil. Participants had the autonomy to complete the courses in any order, with no prerequisites for enrollment. Results: Out of 14,263 participants enrolled nationwide, 182 were included in this study after signing the Informed Consent Form. Of these, 142 (78%) completed at least one course and participated in the educational intervention. A significant increase in knowledge was observed, with mean pre-test scores rising from 7.3 (SD = 1.8) to 9.6 (SD = 0.9) on the post-test across all courses (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The self-instructional, technology-mediated continuing education model proved effective in improving participants’ knowledge about nutrition in ALS. Future studies should explore knowledge retention, behavior change, and the impact of such interventions on clinical outcomes, especially in multidisciplinary care settings. Full article

This study aims to investigate asymmetries in muscle activation and co-contraction of main lower limb muscles during flamenco Zap-3 footwork with consideration of the footwork speed and dancer proficiency. Twelve flamenco dancers participated, including six professionals and six amateurs. Each participant performed the Zap-3 sequence under three speed conditions: 160 beats per minute (bpm), 180 bpm and the fastest speed level (F). The normalized surface electromyography was recorded in the gastrocnemius medialis (GM), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA) and rectus femoris (RF) in the dominant (DL) and non-dominant leg (NDL). The co-contraction index was also calculated for selected muscle pairs. The results showed that significant asymmetries occurred only in professional dancers and exclusively at the F speed level. Specifically, the value of the GM in the NDL was higher than that of the DL (p < 0.05, d = 1.97); the value of the BF in the DL was higher than that of the NDL (p < 0.05, d = 1.86) and the co-contraction index of BF/RF in the DL was higher than that of the NDL (p < 0.05, d = 1.87). Understanding these asymmetries may help to inform individualized training strategies aimed at optimizing performance and reducing potential risks. Full article

If we do not urgently educate current and future medical professionals to critically evaluate and distinguish credible AI-assisted diagnostic tools from those whose performance is artificially inflated by data leakage or improper validation, we risk undermining clinician trust in all AI diagnostics and jeopardizing future advances in patient care. For instance, machine learning models have shown high accuracy in diagnosing Parkinson’s Disease when trained on clinical features that are themselves diagnostic, such as tremor and rigidity. This study systematically investigates the impact of data leakage and feature selection on the true clinical utility of machine learning models for early Parkinson’s Disease detection. We constructed two experimental pipelines: one excluding all overt motor symptoms to simulate a subclinical scenario and a control including these features. Nine machine learning algorithms were evaluated using a robust three-way data split and comprehensive metric analysis. Results reveal that, without overt features, all models exhibited superficially acceptable F1 scores but failed catastrophically in specificity, misclassifying most healthy controls as Parkinson’s Disease. The inclusion of overt features dramatically improved performance, confirming that high accuracy was due to data leakage rather than genuine predictive power. These findings underscore the necessity of rigorous experimental design, transparent reporting, and critical evaluation of machine learning models in clinically realistic settings. Our work highlights the risks of overestimating model utility due to data leakage and provides guidance for developing robust, clinically meaningful machine learning tools for early disease detection. This study aims to understand the meaning nursing professionals attribute to their lived experiences of providing humanized care within a public hospital setting. Grounded in Jean Watson’s theory of human caring, the research adopts a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design to capture the perceptions and emotions of nurses regarding humanized care. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine experienced nurses, selected through purposive sampling. The interviews, conducted virtually between July and December 2024, were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method and supported by Atlas.ti software. Four main thematic categories emerged: institutional health policies, professional image and identity, strengths and challenges in care, and essential competencies for humanized care. The findings highlight the critical role of empathy, cultural sensitivity, ethical commitment, and emotional presence in delivering compassionate care. Participants emphasized that, beyond clinical procedures, humanized care requires relational and contextual sensitivity, often hindered by institutional limitations and excessive administrative burdens. The study concludes that nursing professionals are key agents in promoting ethical, empathetic, and culturally respectful practices that humanize health services. These insights offer valuable contributions for designing policies and training strategies aimed at strengthening humanized care as a cornerstone of quality healthcare systems. Full article

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is gaining recognition as a valuable diagnostic tool in various fields of medicine, including pediatrics. Its application at the point of care enables real-time clinical decision-making, which is particularly advantageous in pediatric settings. Although global interest in POCUS is growing, many European countries—including Poland—still lack formal training programs for POCUS at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Nevertheless, the number of pediatricians incorporating POCUS into their daily clinical practice in Poland is increasing. However, the extent of its use and perceived value among pediatricians remains largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the current level of POCUS utilization in pediatric care in Poland, focusing on pediatricians’ self-assessed competencies, perceptions of its clinical utility, and key barriers to its implementation in daily practice. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between July and August 2024 using an anonymous online survey distributed to pediatricians throughout Poland via national professional networks, with a response rate of 7.3%. Categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-square test of independence to assess the associations between key variables. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data from open-ended responses were subjected to a thematic analysis. Results: A total of 210 pediatricians responded. Among them, 149 (71%) reported access to ultrasound equipment at their workplace, and 89 (42.4%) reported having participated in some form of POCUS training. Only 46 respondents (21.9%) reported frequently using POCUS in their clinical routine. The self-assessed POCUS competence was rated as low or very low by 136 respondents (64.8%). While POCUS was generally perceived as a helpful tool in facilitating and accelerating clinical decisions, the main barriers to implementation were a lack of formal training and limited institutional support. Conclusions: Although POCUS is perceived as clinically valuable by the surveyed pediatricians in Poland, its routine use remains limited due to training and systemic barriers. Future efforts should prioritize the development of a validated, competency-based training framework and the implementation of a larger, representative national study to guide the structured integration of POCUS into pediatric care. Sexual health constitutes a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, with direct implications for individual development and the broader social and economic progress of communities. Promoting environments that ensure sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimination, and violence is a key public health priority. Sexuality, in this regard, should be understood as an inherent dimension of human experience, shaped by biological, cultural, cognitive, and ideological factors. Accordingly, sexual health education requires a holistic and multidimensional approach that integrates sociocultural, biographical, and professional perspectives. This study aims to examine the level of knowledge and training in sexual health among nursing students and healthcare professionals, as well as to assess the extent to which sexual health content is incorporated into nursing curricula at Spanish universities. A scoping review was conducted using the Dialectical Structural Model of Care (DSMC) as the theoretical framework. The findings indicate a significant lack of knowledge regarding sexual health among both nursing students and healthcare professionals, largely due to educational and structural limitations. Furthermore, sexual health education remains underrepresented in nursing curricula and is frequently addressed from a narrow, fragmented biomedical perspective. These results highlight the urgent need for the comprehensive integration of sexual health content into nursing education. Strengthening curricular inclusion is essential to ensure the preparation of competent professionals capable of delivering holistic, inclusive, and empowering care in this critical area of health. Introduction: The increasing cultural diversity of patients poses new challenges for nurses. Cultural competence, especially knowledge of the cultural determinants of health and illness, is an important element of professionalism in nursing care. The aim of this study was to analyse nurses’ self-assessment of cultural knowledge, with a focus on the six dimensions of the Giger and Davidhizar model, prior to formal training in this area. Methods: A triangulation method combining qualitative and quantitative analysis was used. The analysis included 353 statements from 36 master’s student nurses. Data were coded according to six cultural phenomena: biological factors, communication, space, time, social structure, and environmental control. Content analysis, ANOVA, Spearman’s rank correlation, and cluster analysis (k-means) were conducted. Results: The most frequently identified that categories were environmental control (34%), communication (20%), and social structure (16%). Significant knowledge gaps were identified in the areas of non-verbal communication, biological differences, and understanding space in a cultural context. Three cultural knowledge profiles of the female participants were distinguished: pragmatic, socio-reflective, and critical–experiential. Conclusions: The cultural knowledge of the participants was fragmented and simplified. The results indicate the need to personalise cultural learning and to take into account nurses’ level of readiness and experience profile. The study highlights the importance of the systematic development of reflective and contextual cultural knowledge as a foundation for competent care. Full article

A Novel Optimized Hybrid Deep Learning Framework for Mental Stress Detection Using Electroencephalography

Mental stress is a psychological or emotional strain that typically occurs because of threatening, challenging, and overwhelming conditions and affects human behavior. Various factors, such as professional, environmental, and personal pressures, often trigger it. In recent years, various deep learning (DL)-based schemes using electroencephalograms (EEGs) have been proposed. However, the effectiveness of DL-based schemes is challenging because of the intricate DL structure, class imbalance problems, poor feature representation, low-frequency resolution problems, and complexity of multi-channel signal processing. This paper presents a novel hybrid DL framework, BDDNet, which combines a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), and deep belief network (DBN). BDDNet provides superior spectral–temporal feature depiction and better long-term dependency on the local and global features of EEGs. BDDNet accepts multiple EEG features (MEFs) that provide the spectral and time-domain features of EEGs. A novel improved crow search algorithm (ICSA) was presented for channel selection to minimize the computational complexity of multichannel stress detection. Further, the novel employee optimization algorithm (EOA) is utilized for the hyper-parameter optimization of hybrid BDDNet to enhance the training performance. The outcomes of the novel BDDNet were assessed using a public DEAP dataset. The BDDNet-ICSA offers improved recall of 97.6%, precision of 97.6%, F1-score of 97.6%, selectivity of 96.9%, negative predictive value NPV of 96.9%, and accuracy of 97.3% to traditional techniques. Background: Brain health is a growing public health priority due to the high global burden of neurological and mental disorders. Promoting brain health across the lifespan supports individual and societal well-being, creativity, and productivity. Objective: To address the need for specialized education in this field, the University of Bern developed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Brain Health. This article outlines the program’s rationale, structure, and goals. Program Description: The one-year, 15 ECTS-credit program is primarily online and consists of four modules: (1) Introduction to Brain Health, (2) Brain Disorders, (3) Risk Factors, Protective Factors and Interventions, and (4) Brain Health Implementation. It offers a multidisciplinary, interprofessional, life-course approach, integrating theory with practice through case studies and interactive sessions. Designed for healthcare and allied professionals, the CAS equips participants with skills to promote brain health in clinical, research, and public health contexts. Given the shortage of trained professionals in Europe and globally, the program seeks to build a new generation of brain health advocates. It aims to inspire action and initiatives that support the prevention, early detection, and management of brain disorders. Conclusions: The CAS in Brain Health is an innovative educational response to a pressing global need. By fostering interdisciplinary expertise and practical skills, it enhances professional development and supports improved brain health outcomes at individual and population levels. Full article

This article examines training itineraries for early childhood education professionals in Portugal, focusing on promoting social and human development through music and the arts for infants. The training models discussed are categorized as short-term and long-term, encompassing both theory and practice through a transdisciplinary approach. Based on initiatives promoted by the Companhia de Música Teatral (CMT) and the Education and Human Development Group of the Centre for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM) at NOVA University Lisbon, the article highlights projects such as: (i) Opus Tutti and GermInArte, developed between 2011 and 2018; (ii) the Postgraduate Course Music in Childhood: Intervention and Research, offered at the University since 2020/21, which integrates art, health, and education, promoting collaborative work between professionals; and (iii) Mil Pássaros (Thousand Birds), developed since 2020, which exemplifies the integration of environmental education and artistic practices. The theoretical basis of these training programs combines neuroscientific and educational evidence, emphasizing the importance of the first years of life for integral development. Studies, such as those by Heckman, reinforce the impact of early investment in children’s development. Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory and Malloch and Trevarthen’s concept of ‘communicative musicality’ structure the design of these courses, recognizing music as a catalyst for cognitive, emotional, and social skills. The transformative role of music and the arts in educational and social contexts is emphasized, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, by proposing approaches that articulate creation, intervention, and research to promote human development from childhood onwards. Clinical supervision, supported by models such as SafeCare, can improve professional development, safety and the quality of care in intensive care units. Objectives: This study aimed to: (1) assess current pain assessment practices in a polyvalent Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Porto district; (2) identify nurses’ training needs regarding the Clinical Supervision-Sensitive Indicator—Pain; and (3) evaluate the impact of clinical supervision sessions on pain assessment practices. Methods: A quantitative, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional study with a pre- and post-intervention design was conducted. Based on the SafeCare model, it included a situational diagnosis, 6 clinical supervision sessions (February 2023), and outcome evaluation via nursing record audits (November 2022 and May 2023) in 31 total critical ill patients. Pain was assessed using standardised tools, in line with institutional protocols. Data was analysed using Software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences v25.0. Results: Pain was highly prevalent in the first 24 h, decreasing during hospitalisation. Generalised acute abdominal pain predominated, with mild to moderate intensity, and was exacerbated by wound care and mobilisation/positioning. Pain management combined pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. There was an improvement in all the parameters of the pain indicator post-intervention. Conclusions: Despite routine assessments, gaps remained in reassessing pain post-analgesia and during invasive procedures. Targeted clinical supervision and ongoing training proved effective in improving compliance with protocols and supporting safer, more consistent pain management. Full article

The ongoing secular changes in human movement development means that an assessment of primitive reflexes is now required not only in disabled but also in neurotypical children. This study had three aims: (1) presenting the TASHUN test battery as suitable for the assessment of primitive reflex activity in normal children and child athletes; (2) analyzing reflex characteristics of neurotypical children; (3) verifying validity and reliability of tests. Spearman’s rank correlation and ROC analysis were used for validation. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient and RM ANOVA analyzed reliability. The test on 242 schoolgirls has demonstrated that retained primitive reflexes are present in almost every individual (84.7–95.7%). Correlations showed strong positive association, with all values exceeding 0.8, and ROC analysis demonstrated excellent predictive strength (AUC values over 0.9). Interobserver reliability showed excellent agreement (ICC values above 0.9). No significant offset was present among the scoring by evaluators. Therefore, testing for primitive reflexes is necessary in neurotypical children in order to obtain a realistic image about the physiology of reflexes and their role in motor development. Our screening could be useful for practicing sport professionals, researchers and academics, to identify deficiencies, to further explore reflexes and to train future PE teachers and trainers. Interpreters who translate for refugees are regularly confronted with traumatic content. Listening regularly to and translating potentially traumatizing stories make interpreters vulnerable to secondary traumatization. The current study aimed to investigate secondary traumatic stress (STS) in interpreters working with refugees and to identify potential risk and protective factors. In this cross-sectional study, 64 interpreters from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland participated. STS, compassion satisfaction, burnout, and resilience were assessed using the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, Professional Quality of Life Scale, and Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale. Sociodemographic data were collected (e.g., experiences with translation in psychotherapy, personal backgrounds of forced displacement, and personal experiences with psychotherapy as a client). Subgroup comparisons were conducted to identify risk factors for STS. A total of 43 participants (67%) showed at least mild STS. STS was significantly associated with burnout. Personal experiences of forced displacement, gender, and working context had no impact on STS. Interpreters with personal experiences of psychotherapy showed a higher level of STS as well as higher resilience than those without personal experiences of psychotherapy. Independent of personal experiences of forced displacement, gender, and working context, interpreters who work with refugees are at high risk of STS. Regular training and supervision for interpreters who work with refugees should thus be offered as standard practice. Full article

Background and Objectives: Depression is a leading cause of disability globally, with treatment challenges including limited access, stigma, and poor adherence. Gamification, which applies game elements such as points, levels, and storytelling into non-game contexts, offers a promising strategy to enhance engagement and augment traditional treatments. Our research is the first study designed to explore the implementation of gamification within the Malaysian context. The objective was to explore the feasibility of implementation of gamification as an adjunctive treatment for adults with depression. Materials and Methods: Focus group discussions were held with five mental health professionals and ten patients diagnosed with moderate depression. The qualitative component assessed perceptions of gamified interventions, while quantitative measures evaluated participants’ depressive and anxiety symptomatology. Results: Three key themes were identified: (1) understanding of gamification as a treatment option, (2) factors influencing its acceptance, and (3) characteristics of a practical and feasible intervention. Clinicians saw potential in gamification to boost motivation, support psychoeducation, and encourage self-paced learning, but they expressed concerns about possible addiction, stigma, and the complexity of gameplay for some patients. Patients spoke of gaming as a source of comfort, escapism, and social connection. Acceptance was shaped by engaging storylines, intuitive design, balanced difficulty, therapist guidance, and clear safety measures. Both groups agreed that gamification should be used in conjunction with standard treatments, be culturally sensitive, and be presented as a meaningful therapeutic approach rather than merely as entertainment. Conclusions: Gamification emerges as an acceptable and feasible supplementary approach for managing depression in Malaysia. Its success depends on culturally sensitive design, robust clinical oversight, and seamless integration with existing care pathways. Future studies should investigate long-term outcomes and establish guidelines for the safe and effective implementation of this approach. We recommend targeted investment into culturally adapted gamified tools, including training, policy development, and collaboration with key stakeholders to realistically implement gamification as a mental health intervention in Malaysia.
