Free-space optical (FSO) communications have emerged as a promising complement to conventional radio-frequency (RF) systems due to their high bandwidth, low interference, and license-free spectrum. Visible-light FSO communication, using laser diodes or LEDs, offers potential for short-range data links, but performance is highly wavelength-dependent under varying atmospheric conditions. This study presents an experimental evaluation of three visible laser diodes at 650 nm (red), 532 nm (green), and 405 nm (violet), focusing on their optical output power, quantum efficiency, and modulation behavior across a range of driving currents and frequencies. A custom laboratory testbed was developed using an Atmega328p microcontroller and a Visual Basic control interface, allowing precise control of current and modulation frequency. A silicon photovoltaic cell was employed as the optical receiver and energy harvester. The results demonstrate that the 650 nm red laser consistently delivers the highest quantum efficiency and optical output, with stable performance across electrical and modulation parameters. These findings support the selection of 650 nm as the most energy-efficient and versatile wavelength for short-range, cost-effective visible-light FSO communication. This work provides experimentally grounded insights to guide wavelength selection in the development of energy-efficient optical wireless systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Prior research suggest that poor working memory significantly contributes to the growth of overweight and obesity. This study investigated the behavioral and neural aspects of general and food-specific working memory in females with overweight or obesity (OW/OB). Method: A total of 54 female participants, with 26 in the OW/OB group and 28 in the normal-weight (NW) group, completed a general and a food-related two-back task while an EEG was recorded. Results: In the general task, the OW/OB group showed significantly poorer performance (higher IES) than the NW group (p = 0.018, η2 = 0.10), with reduced theta power during non-target trials (p = 0.040, η2 = 0.08). No group differences were found for P2, N2, or P3 amplitudes. In the food-related task, significant group × stimulus interactions were observed. The OW/OB group showed significantly higher P2 amplitudes in high-calorie (HC) versus low-calorie (LC) food conditions (p = 0.005, η2 = 0.15). LPC amplitudes were greater in the OW/OB group for HC targets (p = 0.036, η2 = 0.09). Alpha power was significantly lower in OW/OB compared to NW in HC non-targets (p = 0.030, η2 = 0.09), suggesting a greater cognitive effort. Conclusions: These findings indicate that individuals with OW/OB exhibit deficits in general working memory and heightened neural responses to high-calorie food cues, particularly during non-target inhibition. The results suggest an interaction between reward salience and cognitive control mechanisms in obesity. Full article

Fertilization is a critical measure for vegetation restoration and ecological reconstruction in degraded grasslands. However, little is known about the long-term effects of different combinations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) on plant and microbial communities in degraded grasslands. This study conducted a four-year (2017–2020) N, P, K addition experiment in the Khorchin Grassland, a degraded typical grassland located in Zhalute Banner, Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia, to investigate the effects of fertilization treatment on plant functional groups and microbial communities after grazing exclusion. Our results showed that the addition of P, NP, and NPK compound fertilizers significantly increased aboveground biomass of the plant community, which is mainly related to the improvement of nutrient availability to promote the growth of specific plant functional groups, especially annual and biennial plants and perennial bunchgrasses. However, the addition of N, P, and NP fertilizers significantly reduced the species diversity of the plant community. At the same time, the addition of N, P, and NP fertilizers and the application of N and NP significantly reduced fungal species diversity but had no significant effect on soil bacteria. Our study provides new insights into the relationships between different types of fertilization and plant community productivity and biodiversity in degraded grasslands over four years of fertilization, which is critical for evaluating the effect of fertilization on the restoration of degraded grassland. To evaluate the response of broiler breeder hens submitted to different amino acid intakes of methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, and to determine the coefficients for egg output and body weight for maintenance. Three studies were performed using 160 broiler breeder hens housed individually in metabolic cages. A summit diet and a nitrogen-free diet were formulated. The levels ranged from 1.79 to 7.13, 2.49 to 8.3, and 2.04 to 6.79 g/kg of methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, respectively. The variables measured were feed intake, amino acid intake, rate of lay, egg weight, and egg output. The broken line model was used to evaluate the responses. It was verified that higher values of the rate of lay, egg weight, and egg output were observed for the higher concentrations of amino acids studied. A significant difference was observed for the variables rate of lay, egg weight, egg output, and body weight (p < 0.05) for the three amino acids evaluated. The amount of each amino acid required to produce one gram per egg was estimated at 12.4 mg, 14.5 mg, and 11.2 mg for methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, respectively. The values estimated by coefficient b that represent the amino acid for maintenance requirement were methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine of 30.2, 32.2, and 42.4 mg/kg BW, respectively. The coefficients may be used to design additional models to study requirements nutrition in broiler breeders, allowing a better understanding of how these birds respond to different dietary amino acids. Impact of Metabolically Healthy Obesity on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Older Adults with HFpEF: Insights from a Nationwide Sample

Background: Clinical outcomes among older adults hospitalized with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in the setting of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to evaluate whether MHO status is associated with different rates of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) during HFpEF-related hospitalizations compared to patients without MHO. Methods: Data from the 2019 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was analyzed using relevant ICD-10 codes to identify HFpEF admissions in older adults. Propensity score matching (1:1) was applied to generate balanced cohorts of patients with and without MHO. Multivariable adjustments were performed to assess primary outcomes, including MACCEs, all-cause mortality (ACM), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), dysrhythmia, cardiac arrest (CA), and stroke. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Each MHO cohort included 22,405 patients with a median age of 75 years. The MHO+ group demonstrated a significantly higher risk of dysrhythmia (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.21–1.43, p < 0.001). Interestingly, an “obesity paradox” was observed, as the MHO+ cohort had lower odds of MACCEs (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.61–0.81, p < 0.001), ACM (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.54–0.82, p < 0.001), and AMI (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.59–0.86, p = 0.001) compared to MHO−. No significant differences were found for CA or stroke between the groups. Conclusions: Although the MHO+ group had an elevated risk of dysrhythmia, they exhibited more favorable outcomes in terms of MACCEs, ACM, and AMI—supporting the concept of an “obesity paradox.” Further research is needed to better understand the role of MHO as a comorbid condition in patients with HFpEF. Background/Objectives: Nowadays, intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) has emerged as a novel technique for treatment of vascular calcifications, first in coronary and then in peripheral arteries. In the current literature there is little evidence that describes IVL as an effective and safe solution in treating severe aortic and aorto-iliac calcifications. The aim of this study is to report current available data about the use of IVL in treating aortic and aorto-iliac calcified lesions and its application in facilitating other endovascular procedures. Methods: the present review was conducted and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines. Preliminary searches were conducted on MEDLINE and Pubmed from January 2015 to February 2025. Studies were divided into 3 main categories depending on the location of calcifications and the type of treatment: IVL in visceral and infrarenal obstructive disease (group 1), IVL in aorto-iliac obstructive disease (group 2), IVL used to facilitate other endovascular procedures. Main primary outcomes in the perioperative period were technical and clinical successes and perioperative complications. Primary outcomes at 30 days and mid-term (2 years) were overall survival, limb salvage rate, primary patency, primary assisted patency, secondary patency, and residual stenosis. Results: Sixteen studies were identified for a total of 1674 patients. Technical and clinical successes were 100%, with low rates of perioperative complications. Dissection rate reaches up to 16.1% in some studies, without any differences compared to plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) alone (22.8%; p = 0.47). At 30 days, limb salvage and survival rates were 100%. At 2 years, primary patency, assisted primary patency, and secondary patency were 95%, 98%, and 100%, respectively, with no difference compared to IVL + stenting. Conclusions: IVL has emerged as a novel approach to treat severe calcified lesions in visceral and aorto-iliac atherosclerotic disease and to facilitate other endovascular procedures. This technique seems to offer satisfactory early and mid-term outcomes in terms of primary, primary assisted patency, and secondary patency with low complication rates. Full article

Efficacy of a Novel Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Strain (LP815TM) in Reducing Canine Aggression and Anxiety: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial with Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment

Behavioral issues in domestic dogs represent a significant welfare concern affecting both canines and their caregivers, with prevalence rates reported to range from 34 to 86% across the population. Current treatment options, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine, often present limitations including adverse effects and delayed efficacy. This randomized, placebo-controlled (maltodextrin) study investigated the effects of a novel Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain (LP815TM) on canine behavioral concerns through gut–brain axis modulation. Home-based dogs (n = 40) received either LP815TM (n = 28) or placebo (n = 12) daily for 4 weeks, with behavioral changes assessed using the comprehensive Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and continuous activity monitoring. After the intervention period, dogs receiving LP815TM showed significant improvements in aggression (p = 0.0047) and anxiety (p = 0.0005) compared to placebo controls. These findings were corroborated by objective activity data, which demonstrated faster post-departure settling, reduced daytime sleep, and improved sleep consistency in the treatment group. Throughout >1120 administered doses, no significant adverse events were reported, contrasting favorably with pharmaceutical alternatives. The concordance between our findings and previous research using different L. plantarum strains suggests a consistent biological mechanism, potentially involving GABA production and vagal nerve stimulation. These results indicate that LP815TM represents a promising, safe alternative for addressing common canine behavioral concerns with potential implications for improving both canine welfare and the human–animal bond. Background/Objectives: Cancer is a complex disease that affects patients’ nutritional and psychological status. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of patients diagnosed with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers and evaluate its association with anthropometric measurements, nutrient intake, and psychological symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 patients with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers. Data were collected face-to-face by a questionnaire that included the Subjective Global Assessment-(SGA), Cachexia Assessment Criteria, 24 h Food Consumption Record, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised-(SCL-90-R). Some anthropometric measurements were collected. Results: Body Mass Index (BMI) was found to be significantly lower (p < 0.001) in SGA-B (moderately malnourished) and SGA-C (severely malnourished) compared to those in SGA-A (well-nourished). The calf circumference was significantly lower (p = 0.002) in SGA-C compared to those in SGA-A and SGA-B. The mean SGA scores were found to be higher in cachexia-diagnosed participants (p < 0.001). The energy intake of SGA-C was significantly lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). In addition, the energy intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-C was lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Regarding the intake of vitamins A, C, E, B1, and B6 and carotene, folate, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc, SGA-B and SGA-C were significantly lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Additionally, only phobic anxiety was found to be significantly higher in SGA-B than in SGA-A (p:0.024). Conclusions: As the level of malnutrition increased, a reduction in some nutrient intake and anthropometric measurements was observed. No significant difference was found in any psychological symptoms except phobic anxiety. With this in mind, it is important that every cancer patient, regardless of the stage of the disease, is referred to a dietitian from the time of diagnosis. Full article

Background/Objectives: The increased risk of developing tendinopathies in athlete populations has led to investigations of several genes associated with tendon properties, suggesting that some individuals have a greater genetic predisposition for developing tendinopathies. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how the functional polymorphisms within the COL5A1, COL27A1 and TNC genes impact the risk of developing tendinopathies in high-level Croatian athletes. Methods: For this case–control genetic study, we recruited 63 high-level athletes with a diagnosis of tendinopathies and 92 healthy asymptomatic individuals as controls. All individuals were genotyped for three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the COL5A1, COL27A1 and TNC genes using the pyrosequencing method. Results: TNC rs2104772 TT (p = 0.0089) and the T-T-T haplotype (p = 0.0234), constructed from rs12722, rs946053 and rs2104772, were significantly overrepresented in cases versus controls, implicating a predisposition for tendinopathies. COL27A1 rs946053 GG (p = 0.0118) and the G-A-C haplotype (p = 0.0424), constructed from rs12722, rs946053 and rs2104772, were significantly overrepresented in controls, implicating a protective role. Conclusions: These results further support associations between functional polymorphisms within the COL27A1 and TNC genes and the risk of tendinopathies in high-level athletes. Further research is needed to replicate these results in various populations and larger cohorts. Full article

Burdock (Arctium lappa L.) is a medicinal and edible homologous plant whose roots contain many bioactive substances such as polysaccharides and phenolics. This study explored the integration of burdock powder and lactic acid bacteria fermentation to enhance the nutritional quality, sensory attributes, and flavor profiles of duck sausages. Three bacterial strains, Lacticaseibacillus casei, L. helveticus, and L. plantarum, were selected based on sensory analysis, and their effects on sausage properties were evaluated through combined fermentation trials. The results demonstrated that duck sausages fermented with L. plantarum and L. helveticus and supplemented with 3% burdock powder (PHB group) exhibited > 1.5-fold higher antioxidant activity (ABTS at 85.2 μmol trolox/g and DPPH at 92.7 μmol trolox/g, respectively; p < 0.05) and 15% increase in total phenolic content (8.24 mg gallic acid/g) compared to non-fermented counterparts. The PHB formulation also enhanced color stability (lightness, redness, yellowness), textural characteristics (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness), and sensory acceptability. Volatile compound analysis revealed a reduction in off-odor aldehydes (hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-decenal, and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal) and increased production of desirable aromatic compounds like tetramethyl-pyrazine. These findings highlight the potential of combining lactic acid bacteria fermentation with burdock powder to develop functional duck sausages with improved nutritional and sensory properties. Land use conversion to perennial cropland often degrades the soil structure and fertility, particularly under Mediterranean climatic conditions. This study assessed spatial and temporal dynamics of soil properties and tree responses to 3-year repeated mature compost additions in a citrus orchard. Digital soil mapping revealed strong baseline heterogeneity in texture, CEC, and Si pools. Compost application markedly increased total organic C and N levels, aggregate stability, and pH with noticeable changes after the first amendment, whereas a limited C storage potential was found following further additions. NDVI values of tree canopies monitored over a 3-year period showed significant time-dependent changes not correlated with the soil fertility variables, thus suggesting that multiple interrelated factors affect plant responses. The non-crystalline amorphous Si/total amorphous Si (iSi:Siamor) ratio is here proposed as a novel indicator of pedogenic alteration in disturbed agroecosystems. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring organic farming strategies to site-specific conditions and reinforce the value to combine C and Si pool analysis for long-term soil fertility assessment. Influence of Remimazolam and Propofol on Intraoperative Motor Evoked Potentials During Spinal Surgery: A Randomized Crossover Trial

Background/Objectives: Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) typically combines propofol and remifentanil. Remifentanil exerts minimal influence on motor evoked potential (MEP), whereas propofol partially reduces MEP amplitude. Remimazolam, a novel agent, is a component of TIVA. However, evidence of remimazolam on MEP is limited. We aimed to compare the effects of propofol and remimazolam, combined with remifentanil, on relative MEP depression. Methods: Using a crossover design, 18 patients undergoing spine surgery were randomly assigned to receive either propofol or remimazolam as the first agent. In the propofol first sequence, anesthesia was induced and maintained with propofol, which was then switched to remimazolam 60 min after surgery. In the remimazolam first sequence, remimazolam was used first and then switched to propofol. The primary outcomes measured were the MEP amplitude and latency. Results: MEP amplitude and latency during propofol and remimazolam infusions were as follows: amplitude (mean (SD); 635.3 (399.1) vs. 738.4 (480.4) μV, p = 0.047) and latency (median [IQR]; 22.4 [20.3–24.6] vs. 21.4 [19.6–23.5] ms, p = 0.070), indicating propofol caused greater depression in amplitude than remimazolam. However, an incident of severe body movement disrupting surgery occurred under remimazolam anesthesia in a young, healthy male patient, although bispectral index remained below 60. This suggests that remimazolam, at hypnotic levels similar to propofol, may result in reduced akinesia in major surgeries, such as spinal surgery, when neuromuscular blockade is not employed. Conclusions: Remimazolam demonstrated comparable or superior effects to propofol on MEP latency and amplitude when combined with remifentanil during spinal surgery, rendering it a potential alternative to propofol for MEP monitoring. Kinesthetic motor imagery (KMI), the mental rehearsal of a motor task without its actual performance, constitutes one of the most common techniques used for brain–computer interface (BCI) control for movement-related tasks. The effect of neural injury on motor cortical activity during execution and imagery remains under investigation in terms of activations, processing of motor onset, and BCI control. The current work aims to conduct a post hoc investigation of the event-related potential (ERP)-based processing of KMI during BCI control of anthropomorphic robotic arms by spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and healthy control participants in a completed clinical trial. For this purpose, we analyzed 14-channel electroencephalography (EEG) data from 10 patients with cervical SCI and 8 healthy individuals, recorded through Emotiv EPOC BCI, as the participants attempted to move anthropomorphic robotic arms using KMI. EEG data were pre-processed by band-pass filtering (8–30 Hz) and independent component analysis (ICA). ERPs were calculated at the sensor space, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine potential differences between groups. Our results showed no statistically significant differences between SCI patients and healthy control groups regarding mean amplitude and latency (p < 0.05) across the recorded channels at various time points during stimulus presentation. Notably, no significant differences were observed in ERP components, except for the P200 component at the T8 channel. These findings suggest that brain circuits associated with motor planning and sensorimotor processes are not disrupted due to anatomical damage following SCI. The temporal dynamics of motor-related areas—particularly in channels like F3, FC5, and F7—indicate that essential motor imagery (MI) circuits remain functional. Limitations include the relatively small sample size that may hamper the generalization of our findings, the sensor-space analysis that restricts anatomical specificity and neurophysiological interpretations, and the use of a low-density EEG headset, lacking coverage over key motor regions. Non-invasive EEG-based BCI systems for motor rehabilitation in SCI patients could effectively leverage intact neural circuits to promote neuroplasticity and facilitate motor recovery. Future work should include validation against larger, longitudinal, high-density, source-space EEG datasets. Full article

Rydberg atoms play a crucial role in testing atomic structure theory, quantum computing and simulation. Measurements of transition frequencies from the 21,3S states to Rydberg P1,3 states have reached a precision of several kHz, which poses significant challenges for theoretical calculations, since the accuracy of variational energy calculations decreases rapidly with increasing principal quantum number n. Recently the complex “triple” Hylleraas basis was employed to attain the ionization energy of helium 24P1 state with high accuracy. Different from it, we extended the correlated B-spline basis functions (C-BSBFs) to calculate the Rydberg states of helium. The nonrelativistic energies of 1snpP1,3 states up to n=27 achieve at least 14 significant digits using a unified basis set, thereby greatly reducing the complexity of the optimization process. Results of geometric structure parameters and cusp conditions were presented as well. Both the global operator and direct calculation methods are employed and cross-checked for contact potentials. This C-BSBF method not only obtains high-accuracy energies across all studied levels but also confirms the effectiveness of the C-BSBFs in depicting long-range and short-range correlation effects, laying a solid foundation for future high-accuracy Rydberg-state calculations with relativistic and QED corrections included in helium atom and low-Z helium-like ions. The purpose of this work was to study the effects of lactoferrin (Lf) on acute (days 3 and 15) and early-delayed (day 30) changes in the dentate gyrus of mouse hippocampus caused by whole-body gamma-irradiation. Male C57BL/6 mice received Lf (4 mg per mouse, i.p. injection) immediately after whole-body gamma-irradiation at a dose of 7.5 Gy from a 60Co source. The effect of Lf on mouse behavior was evaluated using “Open field” and “Elevated plus-maze” tests. The proportion of cells with DNA replication was determined by 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation (thymidine analog) and detected by a click reaction with azide Alexa Fluor 568. Lf treatment increased animal survival during the experiment (30 days), compensated for radiation-induced body weight loss, and prevented suppression of motor and exploratory activities. A pronounced anti-radiation effect of Lf on mouse brain cells has been demonstrated. A single injection of the protein allowed preserving 2-fold more proliferating cells and immature neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus of irradiated animals during the acute period of post-radiation injury development.
