The socio-economic geography of the Italian territory is framed by strong imbalances in the settlement development, with consequent inequalities in terms of accessibility to essential services. These challenges are most critical in the ‘inner areas’, which are remote from metropolitan and urban centers and affected by chronic demographic decline and depopulation. Both European and national policies have relied primarily on financial interventions, often implemented with limited integration into comprehensive urban and territorial planning frameworks. Using a case study methodology, this research examines the area-based strategies of the 72 pilot areas designated under the 2014–2020 program-ming cycle of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI). The main research question guiding this study is as follows: how does economic planning intersect with territorial governance in Italy’s inner areas, and what is the specific role of local autonomies and the management of core functions, particularly in relation to urban and regional planning? Through this lens, this study proposes a conceptual reframing of the inter-municipal ad-ministrative scale as a strategic framework for promoting more effective territorial policies. Full article

The establishment and management of nature reserves play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity and supporting sustainable agriculture. This study focuses on 2538 nature reserves in 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities directly under the central government in mainland China. Integrating GIS spatial statistics, imbalance index, and geodetector models, we reveal critical insights: (1) Pronounced spatial inequity is observed, where a small number of eastern provinces dominate the total reserve count, highlighting significant regional disparities in ecological resource allocation. The sparse kernel density in western regions, indicating sparse reserve coverage. The Standard Deviation Ellipse highlights directional dispersion and human-ecological conflicts in high-density zones. (2) Key sustainability indicators driving reserve distribution include: total water resources, water resources per capita, forest area. (3) The spatial distribution of China’s nature reserves, along with factors such as altitude, river distribution, and transportation infrastructure, plays a crucial role in their development. This research provides theoretical support for the scientific planning and policy-making of nature reserves in China and offers practical guidance for optimizing and adjusting sustainable agricultural development. The study emphasizes the vital functions of nature reserves in maintaining ecosystem balance, enhancing regional climate resilience, and serving as biodiversity reservoirs. This research offers strategic insights for integrating nature reserve spatial planning with sustainable agricultural development policies, providing a scientific basis for optimizing the eco-agricultural interface in China. This study investigates the accessibility of public healthcare services in Olsztyn County, a major urban center in the Warmia and Mazury region of Poland. The aim was to develop a methodological framework using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and spatial data to assess the local availability of healthcare infrastructure. The analysis included key facilities such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and specialized outpatient services. A spatial accessibility indicator was constructed to evaluate and compare access levels across municipalities. The results show a clear disparity between urban and rural areas, with significantly better access in cities. Several rural municipalities were found to have limited or no access to essential healthcare services. These findings highlight the uneven spatial distribution of medical infrastructure and point to the need for targeted strategies to improve service availability in underserved areas. The proposed methodological approach may support future studies and inform local and regional planning aimed at reducing healthcare inequalities and improving access for all residents, regardless of their location. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence emphasizing the role of spatial analysis in assessing public service accessibility and supports the development of more equitable healthcare systems at the local level. This study aimed to investigate the future trajectories of last-mile delivery (LMD), and their implications for sustainable urban logistics and smart city planning. Through a Delphi-based scenario analysis targeting the year 2030, this research draws on inputs from a two-round Delphi study with 52 experts representing logistics, academia, and government. Four key thematic areas were explored: consumer demand and behavior, emerging delivery technologies, innovative delivery services, and regulatory frameworks. The projections were structured using fuzzy c-means clustering, and analyzed through the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT), supporting a systemic understanding of innovation adoption in urban logistics systems. The findings offer strategic insights for municipal planners, policymakers, logistics service providers, and e-commerce stakeholders, helping align infrastructure development and regulatory planning with the evolving needs of last-mile logistics. This approach contributes to advancing resilient, low-emission, and inclusive smart city ecosystems that align with global sustainability goals, particularly those outlined in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Objective: This study seeks to analyze the incidence of breastfeeding self-efficacy in postpartum woman who are undergoing prenatal care at the Family Health Strategy Units in the city of Tubarão, Santa Catarina (SC), Southern Brazil, from August to December 2022. Methods: An observational epidemiological study with a cross-sectional design was carried out with puerperal women—either primiparous or multiparous—who were followed in the municipal public network, along with their live-born children delivered at the maternity hospital of Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Tubarão, SC. Participants agreed to participate in the study. For data collection, an instrument developed by researchers and a validated instrument entitled Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form were used to assess the self-efficacy of breastfeeding. Results: The mean score of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES) was 61.75 points (±6.39), indicating high self-efficacy. There was an association between the mean of the general score and/or the domains of the BSES with maternal characteristics. Women with higher education had greater technical mastery (p = 0.010), and those with previous breastfeeding experience and those who breastfed their children during the first hour of life had a higher average in the overall score and in the domains of the scale. In addition, those who planned the pregnancy (p = 0.024) and those who did not receive assistance from the milk bank (p = 0.047) had greater technical domain. Conclusions: In the present study, there was a predominance of high breastfeeding self-efficacy. It was verified that the personal and clinical aspects interfered in the self-efficacy of breastfeeding. Full article

The increasing urgency of the energy transition, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions, demands spatially informed planning tools to guide renewable energy development. This study presents a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach to assess the suitability of the Gargano district in southern Italy for the implementation of Renewable Energy Communities. The analysis combines expert-based weighting and the Weighted Linear Combination method to evaluate seven key criteria grouped into environmental, socioeconomic, and technical dimensions. The resulting suitability scores, calculated at the municipal scale, highlight spatial disparities across the district, revealing that areas with the highest potential for Renewable Energy Community (REC) deployment are largely situated at the boundaries of the Gargano National Park. These zones benefit from stronger infrastructure, higher energy demand, and fewer environmental constraints, particularly with regard to wind energy initiatives. Conversely, municipalities within the park exhibit lower suitability, constrained by strict landscape regulations and lower population density. The findings provide valuable insights for regional planners and policymakers, supporting the adoption of targeted, environmentally compatible strategies for the advancement of citizen-led renewable energy initiatives in complex territorial contexts. Contemporary urban planning faces the ongoing challenge of developing Green Infrastructure capable of providing vital ecosystem services. Within this framework, the Barcelona metropolitan area has advanced a network of parks that, while serving local neighborhoods, also aim for metropolitan relevance. This study offers a forward-looking analysis of selected parks in the southern Llobregat River basin—an area shaped by historic villages and working-class settlements—to evaluate their contribution to both Green Infrastructure and the region’s polycentric structure. Building on previous landmark studies and multidisciplinary perspectives, the research examines eight parks through four spatial and scalar lenses, assessing their territorial role and accessibility, ecological connectivity, urban integration and permeability, and landscape design with both qualitative and quantitative data. Using a comparative framework alongside research-by-design methods tested in urban design studios, the research links analytical insights to design-based strategies. The outcome is a set of actionable guidelines aimed at enhancing local park performance, with broader implications for over 50 ‘Metropolitan Parks’ spread in more than 30 municipalities. These insights contribute to shaping a more integrated, livable, and resilient metropolitan region. Full article

The treatment of wastewater and the utilization of the by-products of these processes are an important part of the circular economy. The sewage sludge, a result of wastewater treatment, could be used as a material for plant nutrient supply and/or soil-improving products. The city of Nyíregyháza, Hungary, with 120,000 citizens, has a well-planned water treatment plant operated by Nyírségvíz Ltd., which, in cooperation with the Research Institute of Nyíregyháza, developed a municipal sewage sludge compost (SSC). The closed loop of sewage water treatment and the agricultural utilization of its by-product has been developed and managed. The compost product called Nyírkomposzt was planned for acidic sandy soils. Beyond the agronomic benefits, the sustainable and environmentally sound utilization of SSC reduces sewage sludge disposal. This active involvement of a water utility company demonstrates the potential of cross-sectoral cooperation in solving environmental problems. The quality of the compost fits the Hungarian legislation. To study the effects of 0, 9, 18, and 27 t ha−1 doses of compost on acidic sandy soil, a long-term small plot experiment was started in 2003. The cumulative effects of the regular (every third year, last treatment before sampling in 2021) application of the SSC showed positive changes in basic soil properties, depending on the doses used. Increasing values were found in the case of pH from 4.5 to 6, plant available P2O5 from 240 to 690 ppm, and plant available K2O from 180 to 200 ppm. The plant-available zinc and copper content also increased. Soil organic matter and total N content stabilized at around 0.9% and 0.08%, respectively. The grain yields of winter rye also increased in both investigated years. The yields of 18 t ha−1 treatment were about two times higher compared to the control, but only in 2022 was the difference significant. Our findings underscore the potential of well-planned SSC applications to improve the fertility of ploughed, acidic sandy soil, taking into account the theory of the circular economy by utilizing wastes and decreasing landfilling. Road infrastructure is the foundation of the predominant modes of transport, and its effective management is crucial to meet mobility needs. Although necessary for reconstruction, maintenance, and expansion projects, roadworks produce negative impacts, resulting in further risk for workers and drivers and failing to ensure sustainable development. The objective of this paper is twofold: Firstly, investigate the contributing factors to the occurrence of crashes in roadworks. Secondly, develop a model to estimate crash numbers in these areas. The results, which could support municipalities at the planning stage and implement policies for safe and sustainable development, are achieved by examining 121 sites, where 549 crashes occurred, and 25 contributing factors. The variables are divided into three categories: technical characteristics of the site, infrastructural, and environmental. Besides the conventional variables, a risk-increasing factor is calibrated. It assesses the impact of roadworks according to the manoeuvres imposed and the number of lanes. Consistent with previous findings, several variables related to the work zone layout, traffic conditions, infrastructure, and surrounding environment are correlated with the crash number. After performing a further statistical analysis, a multiple linear regression model, statistically significant (0.000) and suitable for accurately estimating the possible number of crashes (R2adj = 0.41), is determined. Urbanization is rapidly transforming cities, especially in the Global South, with Sub-Saharan Africa expected to see the fastest growth in the next 30 years. In South Africa’s Mopani District, this urban expansion has led to the growth of informal settlements, increasing disaster risks related to water, health, and fire. This study focuses on Giyani Local Municipality, examining disaster risks in its informal settlements and the factors influencing the implementation of spatial planning tools. Using a SWOT analysis combined with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), the study found that while the municipality has strong land use and disaster management policies, poor enforcement, lack of integration, and weak governance limit their effectiveness. Opportunities for improvement include securing grants from the National Government and Disaster Management Centre to support disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives. However, challenges such as land shortages and ecological degradation threaten sustainable planning. The findings provide important insights for policymakers, urban planners, and disaster management professionals. The SWOT-AHP approach helps in prioritizing resource allocation, identifying risk trends, and focusing on key areas for mitigation. Overall, the study supports efforts to enhance resilience and promote sustainable urban development in informal settlements through better spatial planning. Full article

The ongoing global population growth and the corresponding rise in energy demand have contributed to increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The integration of alternative, locally sourced energy solutions such as biogas presents a promising strategy to partially offset conventional energy consumption. In this context, countries like Colombia—characterized by a high availability of organic waste such as palm oil mill effluent (POME), rice straw, and pig manure—have the potential to harness these residues for biogas production. This study integrates experimental assays of anaerobic co-digestion tests with the spatial analysis of substrate distribution through GIS tools, enabling the identification of optimal regions for biogas production. Methane yields reached 412 mL CH4/g VS, comparable or superior to those reported in similar studies. In addition to laboratory assays, Geographic Information System (GIS) tools were used to generate a weighted heatmap index based on feedstock availability (POME, rice straw, pig manure) across 40 municipalities in Colombia. This integrated approach supports decentralized renewable energy planning and helps identify optimal locations for biogas plant development. Full article

The landscape of the Warmian municipality of Dobre Miasto has significant natural and cultural value. However, the municipality’s tourism potential remains untapped. The absence of comprehensive local zoning plans covering the entire municipality or most of its territory has disrupted the landscape, leading to the emergence of visually discordant elements. Due to rapid land-use changes in the Region of Warmia, the protection and preservation of its rich natural and cultural heritage are increasingly challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of natural and cultural resources, as well as tourism infrastructure, on the development potential of rural tourism in Dobre Miasto municipality in Poland’s historical region of Warmia. Attempts were made to identify spatial disparities in tourism attractiveness and to determine the ways in which the local environmental and the cultural landscape may support sustainable tourism planning. The results provide valuable insights for implementing appropriate land-use strategies and setting new directions for future development. Tourism infrastructure has to be modernized, expanded, and adapted to new projects, while ensuring that planning and tourism management align with the principles of sustainable development. The growth of tourism creates new opportunities for stimulating rural areas, but it requires careful planning and the implementation of policies that effectively regulate tourist flows while maintaining ecological and cultural integrity. This study applies the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method combined with entropy-based weighting to systematically rank Serbian municipalities regarding economic vitality, infrastructure quality, and socio-economic stability. By developing a composite municipal performance index, the research explores the extent to which stronger economic standings relate to public safety outcomes. Infrastructure factors—including road conditions, housing quality, and water supply—are assessed through correlation and t-tests to evaluate their influence on municipal economic rankings. An ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model also examines how education and health expenditures per capita contribute to broader socio-economic resilience. The findings reveal a moderately strong, though nonlinear, negative relationship between economic performance and crime rates, with road infrastructure emerging as a consistently significant driver of economic strength. Investments in education and health initially correlate with greater municipal stability but show signs of diminishing marginal impact over time. These insights contribute to understanding the complex interplay between governance, infrastructure, and safety in transitional economies, highlighting the value of integrated data-driven approaches for regional development planning. The world is characterised by the growing volumes and flow of goods, which, amid benefits to economic development, result in negative externalities affecting the sustainability of cities. Although numerous studies have analysed the locational patterns of logistics facilities in cities, further research is required to examine their real estate patterns and trends. The aim of the paper is, therefore, to analyse the value of land accommodating logistics facilities in the City of Cape Town municipality, South Africa. Given the lack of dedicated geo-spatial data, logistics firms were searched on Google Maps, utilising a combination of aerial photography and street view imagery. Three main attributes of land parcels hosting logistics facilities were thereafter captured from the municipal cadastral information: property extent, street address, and property number. The latter two were used to extract the 2018 and 2022 property market values from the valuation rolls on the municipal website, followed by statistical, spatial, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analyses. Zones near the central business district and seaport, as well as areas with prime road-based accessibility, had high market values, while those near the railway stations did not stand out. However, GWR yielded weak relationships between market values and the locational variables analysed, arguably showing a disconnect between spatial planning and logistics planning. Towards augmenting sustainable logistics, it is recommended that relevant stakeholders strategically integrate logistics into spatial planning, and particularly revitalise freight rail to attract investment to logistics hubs with direct railway access. It’s Not Just About the Money: What Actually Promotes New Firm Formation? Evidence from Polish Municipalities

This paper examined whether regional differences in Poland affect the use of various tools for supporting local entrepreneurship. It also verified whether there is a universal set of tools that accounts for the level at which local entrepreneurship support tools are used by municipalities. This study was based on a survey conducted among 882 Polish municipalities. Analyses were carried out using classical measures of descriptive statistics, supplemented by the Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis rank. The results reveal that the likelihood of municipalities with a local spatial development plan (LSDP) use more support instruments is statistically significant. For municipalities, having an LSDP also correlates with higher levels of local entrepreneurship. Moreover, the presence of an LSDP contributes not only to increased local entrepreneurship, but also aligns with long-term, sustainable, spatial and economic development goals. It was concluded that municipalities should be encouraged to create comprehensive development plans and, above all, to develop and implement local spatial development plans. Local decision-makers should must be made aware of the role of the plan and its importance for the level of entrepreneurship in the area. More attention should also be focused on the use of tools aimed at direct cooperation with entrepreneurs. Full article
