Based on a literature review, the present article aims to present ecotourism as a transformative factor in the economic, social, cultural, and environmental contexts, revealing key elements for the sustainable development of ecotourism. To ensure that this objective is met, the review combines the insights of classical authors and many recent authors who have best addressed the subject. The review carefully selected consensual and contradictory arguments, reflecting on the relevance of each group, particularly in aspects such as the influence of emotional experience on behaviour and satisfaction, strategy and competitive advantage, cooperation and sustainability, and the influence of resilience on ecotourism. The impact of each perspective was presented without ignoring the major constraints that ecotourism faces in its search for a position in the tourism industry. This led the study to accept the fact that the active participation of the community is indispensable in the formula for the success of ecotourism. Some statistical data were consulted and analysed, which enabled the study to determine the quantitative impact of ecotourism on economic, social, and environmental life. In terms of benefits to communities, the review clarifies the fact that ecotourism serves as an instrument that mobilizes not only the additional value of products and services traded in the process, but also the return on investments and job creation. The combination of visiting activities with the involvement of tour guides contributes to maximizing profits in the destinations, thus supporting solid economic, social, and environmental development for the benefit of both ecotourism promoters and local communities. However, the analysis makes it clear that the economic, social, and environmental benefit depends on the degree of involvement of the local population. In terms of usability, for other studies, this review can contribute to the understanding and positioning of ecotourism in the search for a balance between satisfying socioeconomic and environmental interests. Additionally, it can serve as an aid to policy makers in their decisions related to ecotourism. Full article

Understanding forest-cover change and its drivers is vital for global forest management and policy development. This study analyzed perceptions of historical drivers behind land-use/land-cover change (LULCC) and forest change in gazetted forests from 1966 to 2022 to evaluate the impact of human activities around the gazetted forest reserves, comparing three forests in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Three gazetted forests (Doma, Risha, and Odu) were sampled to represent the three geopolitical zones of the state. SPSS IBM version 29, NVivo 1.7, and Python 3 were used for data analyses to generate statistics and identify coherent themes across the forests. Results show that changes were perceived to be triggered by sixteen drivers (direct and indirect) related to social, economic, environmental, policy/institutional, and technological elements. Agricultural expansion, lumbering, and charcoal production were the most reported direct drivers, while population growth, poverty, and government policies were the most perceived indirect drivers. The results showed variations in human activities across forest sites. For example, agricultural expansion, lumbering, and grazing were more widespread, while construction and settlement activities differed between forests. The Risha forest community saw agriculture expansion ahead of other drivers, Doma forest people saw population growth above other drivers, and the Odu forest community saw lumbering aiding other drivers that led to change. Implementation of policies focusing on these key drivers must match local perceptions and priorities to engage people in forest conservation. These efforts could ensure effective forest protection that is vital for achieving global biodiversity and climate targets and safeguarding local livelihoods. The specific drivers of changes in each forest need to be targeted in conservation efforts. Full article

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are vital drivers of economic growth in Kenya, yet they face persistent barriers, including limited capacity, financial exclusion, and weak market integration. This study assessed the potential of universities as strategic hubs for MSME capacity building through a collaborative initiative between Egerton University and the KCB Foundation. Using the International Labour Organization’s Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) methodology, 481 entrepreneurs from Egerton, Njoro, and Gilgil were trained in a business development bootcamp. This study evaluated the training effectiveness, participant demographics, confidence in skill application, networking outcomes, and satisfaction levels. The results showed high participant confidence (over 95% across all regions), strong financial management uptake (85%), and mobile banking adoption (70%). Gilgil led in inclusivity and peer engagement, while Njoro showed stronger gender representation. However, logistical challenges caused 25% absenteeism in rural areas, and only 23% accessed post-training mentorship. These findings underscore the transformative role of HEIs in fostering sustainable entrepreneurship through localized, inclusive, and industry-aligned training. Policy recommendations include hybrid delivery models, tiered curricula for diverse skill levels, and institutionalized mentorship through public–private partnerships. This case demonstrates the value of embedding entrepreneurship support within university mandates to advance national MSME development agendas. Full article

This study addressed a significant and relevant issue, specifically the production of high-quality fruit planting material linked to an economically viable nursery operation. The process considered both the pedo-climatic conditions of the region where the fruit planting material was cultivated and the technological elements utilized. The objective of this research was to gather information regarding the necessity and effectiveness of implementing localized irrigation for plum trees in the nursery in the context of various fertilization treatments. It also aimed to investigate the variations in leaf area among Cacanska Lepotica and Stanley plum cultivars subjected to various irrigation (non-irrigated control, 10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm) and fertilization (unfertilized control, N8P8K8, N16P16K16, and N24P24K24) methods. The study was conducted within a private nursery situated in the northwest region of Romania using a 4 × 2 × 4 split-split-plot design with five replications. This research took place in the summer of 2024, in the second field of the nursery during the growth stage of grafted trees. The implementation of various NPK fertilization methods (8%, 16%, and 24%) led to enhancements in leaf surface developments (increased by 6.53–16.14% compared to the control). The application of fertilization ranging from 8 to 16% and subsequently from 16 to 24% was effectively absorbed by the plum trees, resulting in a substantial growth of 180–226 cm2. Irrigation with 30 mm generated significant increases in the leaf area of 4.42–14.27% compared to the control. To obtain optimal yields of grafted trees, it is advisable to utilize a combination of irrigation and NPK fertilization. To promote the appropriate growth and development of the trees, it is essential to monitor the soil moisture levels and to implement irrigation during times of water shortage when the trees exhibit heightened water usage. The research findings indicated that both cultivars experienced similar advantages from 24% NPK fertilization and 30 mm of irrigation; therefore, the implementation of the aforementioned technological elements is strongly recommended. The increasing development of coal mining subsidence wetland parks has led to a growing focus on assessing their ecological, economic, and social benefits following ecological restoration. This study establishes an assessment framework for the social landscape performance of coal mining subsidence wetland parks based on the landscape performance series (LPS), cultural ecosystem services (CES), and the unique characteristics of coal mining subsidence wetland parks. The framework integrates expert opinions and field research to select indicators, resulting in a comprehensive evaluation system comprising 28 indicators across five dimensions. Taking the Pan’an Lake National Wetland Park (PLNWP) in Xuzhou, China, as an example, we conducted empirical research by collecting data through questionnaires and on-site interviews. Using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, the social landscape performance score of PLNWP was 3.511, which is rated as “good.” The importance–performance analysis (IPA) was applied to identify differences in the perceptions of visitors and local residents regarding the social landscape performance of the PLNWP. Local residents highlighted the need to enhance the amenity of waterside spaces, while visitors focused on the accessibility. Finally, based on the performance score and the perceptions from different stakeholders, optimization strategies were proposed in four aspects: enhancing waterside space amenity, optimizing accessibility, improving educational facilities, and addressing diverse user needs. This study could provide a feasible assessment framework and optimization guidance for other coal mining subsidence wetland parks. Full article

Communities are fundamental to national development, functioning as essential social units where local cultural identity and public participation play a crucial role. However, rapid urbanization has led to a decline in interpersonal interactions, weakened community bonds, and increased social divides, which in turn reduce residents’ engagement in public affairs. This study aims to explore the relationship between cultural identity and community revitalization to promote sustainable community development. We will achieve this by analyzing the implementation experiences of two rural Taiwanese communities: Huanan Community in Gukeng, Yunlin, and Chenggong Community in Dadou, Taichung City. Using exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis as our methodologies, we seek to understand how cultural identity fosters cohesion, enhances participation, and supports sustainable development in community revitalization. Our research findings indicate that cultural identity is composed of cultural engagement, cultural belonging, and cultural integration. Conversely, community revitalization encompasses aspects of daily life, life experiences, personal economic evaluation, community industry development, and residents’ environmental awareness. The overall research framework demonstrates that cultural identity has a strong influence on community revitalization, identifying strategies to improve residents’ quality of life and foster vibrant communities. Community-led rural tourism plays a crucial role in promoting economic sustainability and cultural preservation by prioritizing local needs and values. Active resident participation fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment, essential for the long-term success of tourism initiatives. A study of 386 residents from Bregenzerwald, Austria—selected for its established community-led tourism model and strong local engagement—characterized by a balanced gender distribution and high education levels, investigated the factors influencing local engagement in tourism, including perceived benefits, empowerment, trust, place attachment, and resource accessibility. Complementary interviews with 31 stakeholders from Fruška Gora, Serbia—chosen as an emerging rural tourism destination with potential for sustainable development—further emphasized the significance of community agency and empowerment. Through factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM), the research validated its conceptual framework, demonstrating the transferability of the Bregenzerwald model to other rural contexts. Two key constructs emerged: tourism empowerment and sustainable belonging, jointly explaining 84.655% of the variance. Tourism empowerment underscores residents’ recognition of tourism as a vehicle for economic growth, job creation, and cultural safeguarding, while sustainable belonging reflects a strong commitment to eco-friendly practices and social cohesion. Stakeholders from Fruška Gora echoed these findings, highlighting tourism’s role in economic development, cultural identity reinforcement, and environmental stewardship. The results illustrate that rural tourism, when community-led, serves as a comprehensive development tool, fostering economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and social solidarity. The Bregenzerwald model offers a valuable framework for enhancing community participation and sustainable tourism development in other rural regions seeking holistic growth. Full article

South Africa’s persistent energy shortages and high utility costs have led to increased interest in rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, understanding their economic and environmental viability in urban residential contexts remains limited. This study investigates the feasibility of integrating rooftop solar PV systems with local energy storage and grid electricity in residential housing complexes in Benoni, Gauteng Province. A hybrid energy system was proposed and modeled using detailed consumption data from a typical community in Benoni. The system includes rooftop PV installations, lithium-ion storage, and connection to the national grid. A techno-economic analysis was conducted over a 25-year project lifespan to evaluate energy cost, payback period, net present cost, and carbon dioxide emissions. The optimal system configuration—Solar PV + Storage + Grid—achieved average annual utility bill savings of USD 30,207, with a payback period of 1.0 year, a net present cost (NPC) of USD 40,782, and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 101.7%. Annual utility costs were reduced from USD 30,472 to USD 267, and the system resulted in a net reduction of 130 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) was USD 0.0071/kWh. The integration of rooftop solar PV and energy storage with grid electricity presents a highly cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for residential communities in urban South Africa. The findings support policy initiatives aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7: “Affordable and Clean Energy”. Full article

New-quality productivity and industrial structure upgrading has become a primary area of concern with respect to regional economic transformation and sustainable development. Based on static panel data of 108 prefecture-level-and-above cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2013 to 2022, the projection pursuit model, coupling coordination degree model, and obstacle degree model were used to study the spatiotemporal patterns and key obstacle factors in the coupling of new-quality productivity and levels of industrial upgrading. Results show the following: (1) The average coupling coordination degree increased from 0.42 in 2013 to 0.53 in 2022, exhibiting a three-stage trend of “initial advancement, rapid growth, and high-level fluctuation”. (2) Regionally, a gradient pattern of “downstream leading, midstream following, and upstream catching up” persists, but regional gaps have narrowed significantly. (3) Spatially, the coupling coordination level shows a pattern of “high in the east, low in the west, led by the core, and breakthrough in the local area”, with significant positive aggregation characteristics. (4) The main obstacle factors across the entire area include digital patents (7.03%), green patents (7.03%), and the number of high-tech enterprises (6.96%), but the weights of the obstacle factors vary greatly across different areas. These findings provide scientific support for green transformation, regional integration, and sustainability-oriented industrial policy design in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Full article

This study explores how integrating design processes into the native timber industry of southern Chile, specifically in the Araucanía and Los Ríos regions, can improve the value chain and promote sustainability. Chile’s native wood sector is constrained by fragmented value chains, underutilised small-diameter logs and limited market confidence. These challenges jeopardise forest sustainability and rural livelihoods, underscoring the imperative to find innovative solutions to reinvigorate the sector. A market gap analysis revealed critical limitations in the current industry, including low supply, limited demand, and weak technological development, especially in producing value-added wood products. The research identified over 417,000 hectares of second-growth roble (Nothofagus obliqua)-raulí (Nothofagus alpina)-coigüe (Nothofagus dombeyi) forests suitable for sustainable management. Interviews with woodworking SMEs showed that 66% already use native timber, yet 46% of the projected volume remains underutilised due to the prevalence of short and thin logs. In response to these challenges, the study developed innovative prototypes such as interior claddings and lattices made from smaller, underutilised logs. These designs were evaluated and validated for use in residential and public buildings, demonstrating their potential to meet new market demands while promoting resource efficiency. The results show that, whilst there is a clear need for better infrastructure, workforce training, and commercial planning to support product adoption, design-driven innovation offers a promising path forward enhancing the industry’s competitiveness. Demonstrating how design-led integration can transform under-used native timber into high-value products, simultaneously driving sustainable forest stewardship and local economic growth. Full article

Does Green Finance Facilitate the Upgrading of Green Export Quality? Evidence from China’s Green Loan Interest Subsidies Policy

In the global pursuit of sustainable development and climate change mitigation, reconciling export growth with environmental protection has emerged as a universal challenge. As the world’s largest developing economy, China has traditionally relied on a resource-intensive development model to fuel rapid foreign trade growth. However, this extensive growth pattern has not only led to environmental pollution domestically but has also encountered hurdles from international green trade barriers. Finance, as a key driver of stable economic growth, plays a pivotal role in achieving high-quality trade development. Against this backdrop, the Chinese government has introduced the green credit interest subsidies policy. This policy aims to coordinate government financial resources and guide capital toward green production, alleviating financing constraints and fostering the upgrading of export product quality. Utilizing data from the World Bank, China Customs statistics, and provincial panels from 2011 to 2020, this study employs a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model to examine the causal impact of the green credit subsidies policy on efforts to upgrade the export quality of green products across China’s regions. The benchmark regression results indicate that the green credit interest subsidies policy has significantly improved the export quality of green products across China’s manufacturing industries. Heterogeneity analysis shows that this policy has had a more pronounced positive impact on green product quality in industries with quality-based competition strategies, in regions with well-coordinated local finance and financial policies, as well as in countries that have concluded environmental clauses with China. Mechanism analysis reveals that, on the export side, the policy enhances green product quality by easing financing constraints, increasing green credit, boosting productivity, and upgrading industrial structures. On the import side, the policy promotes green product quality by expanding the scale, variety, and quality of green intermediate goods. This research offers valuable insights for developing countries aiming to establish export-oriented green transformation and upgrading strategies. Full article

Developmental approaches over time have been largely economistic and overlooked local sustainability preconditions. They were greatly influenced by a host of doctrines, theories, and strategies argued through macro-level, macro-scale policies. This research retrospectively views these approaches as they have evolved post-WWII and their effect on sustainability at a community level. It eventually focuses on a specific community-level developmental strategy, i.e., “microfinance”, which has led to the establishment of millions of microenterprises. In recent decades, community-based enterprise (CBE) development has been a widely practiced mode of developmental intervention to develop underdeveloped communities in developing countries. The primary goal of CBEs is to generate profit for people’s livelihood. This research indicates that CBEs offer potential. They can be ecologically sustainable and socially responsible too. A shift in the present model to encourage CBEs’ pursuit of ecological principles is tenable. Foucault’s notion of “dispositif” allows such a shift with incorporation of environmental alongside economic and social goals as a new strategic disposition (model). Therefore, this study presents a social–ecological model of CBE and asserts that it embeds the necessary components to bring about sustainability at a community level. Full article

The transition from open pit to underground mining intensifies water-related hazards such as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), groundwater contamination, and aquifer depletion, threatening ecological and socio-economic sustainability. This study develops an Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (IDRR) framework using a Multi-Dimensional Risk (MDR) approach to holistically assess water hazards in China’s mining regions, integrating environmental, social, governance, economic, technical, community-based, and technological dimensions. A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) model combining the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) evaluates risks, enhanced by a Z-number Fuzzy Delphi AHP (ZFDAHP) spatiotemporal model to dynamically weight hazards across temporal (short-, medium-, long-term) and spatial (local to global) scales. Applied to the Sijiaying Iron Mine, AMD (78% severity) and groundwater depletion (72% severity) emerge as dominant hazards exacerbated by climate change impacts (36.3% dynamic weight). Real-time IoT monitoring systems and AI-driven predictive models demonstrate efficacy in mitigating contamination, while gender-inclusive governance and community-led aquifer protection address socio-environmental gaps. The study underscores the misalignment between static regulations and dynamic spatiotemporal risks, advocating for Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs) and transboundary water agreements. Policy recommendations prioritize IoT adoption, carbon–water nexus incentives, and Indigenous knowledge integration to align mining transitions with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 (Clean Water), 13 (Climate Action), and 14 (Life Below Water). This research advances a holistic strategy to harmonize mineral extraction with water security, offering scalable solutions for global mining regions facing similar ecological and governance challenges. Selenium-rich foods play a crucial role in human health and hold significant economic value for agricultural products. However, many regions in China are experiencing selenium deficiency, which has led to an increased demand for Se-rich agricultural products. This study focused on Nanzhang County, a key area within the “Organic Valley” of Hubei Province, China. We employed fuzzy weights-of-evidence, backpropagation neural network, and support vector regression models to predict optimal planting zones for Selenium-rich crops. A comparative analysis indicated that the backpropagation neural network model provided the highest prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.77), identifying Selenium-rich crop zones covering 68.87% of the aera, where Selenium-rich crops made up 86.67% of all samples. Notably, the backpropagation neural network yielded excellent performance for rice and rapeseed, with R2 values of 0.95 and 0.99, respectively. The findings also indicate that the Selenium content in crops is closely linked to Selenium levels in the soil and is significantly influenced by synergistic and antagonistic interactions with other elements. This study provides scientific support for the cultivation of selenium-rich crops. It plays a positive role in promoting the development of the local selenium-rich industry and the sustainable utilization of soil selenium resources. Full article

Beneficial Analysis of the Effect of Precipitation Enhancement on Highland Barley Production on the Tibetan Plateau Under Different Climate Conditions

While highland barley on the Tibetan Plateau is adversely affected by water stress during its growth period, precipitation enhancement could potentially mitigate this issue. Accurate assessment of the benefits obtained through precipitation enhancement is crucial for local governments to develop policies for sustainable agriculture. To quantify these benefits, the WOFOST model was employed to evaluate the effects under four different precipitation enhancement scenarios. The model demonstrated strong performance, with a Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) of 0.93 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.66. Using the calibrated WOFOST model, yield increases were simulated under three meteorological drought conditions classified by the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The results showed that yield increases were minimal during years with less rainfall, primarily due to a lower leaf area index under extreme meteorological drought conditions. Additionally, the impact of precipitation enhancement on yield increases was nonlinear. An enhancement of 5% had negligible effects, while enhancements greater than 10% led to significant increases. Specifically, precipitation enhancement during the reproductive stage resulted in regional yield increases of 170.7, 325.5, 465.9, and 580.5 kg/ha for enhancements of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively, surpassing yield increases from enhancements during the vegetative stage. This greater yield increase is attributed to highland barley’s sensitivity to water stress at critical growth stages and the unique climate conditions of the Tibetan Plateau. For Longzi—the largest base for highland barley production, with a planting area of 3440 ha in 2024—a 10% enhancement at the reproductive stage could yield an economic benefit of CNY 9.8 million. Under climate change scenarios, the decreasing trends in highland barley yields could be effectively offset by precipitation enhancement, highlighting the applicability of precipitation enhancement as an effective tool for mitigating climate change in Tibet. Future studies should integrate crop models with weather numerical models to better address uncertainties. Full article
