After decades of calls for more sustainable land use systems, there is still a lack of consensus on an appropriate way forward, especially for tropical and subtropical agroecosystems. Land Maxing utilises appropriate, community-based interventions to fortify and maximise the multiple, long-term benefits and interest flows from investments that rebuild all six essential capitals of sustainable development (natural, social, human, physical, financial and political/corporate will) for resource-poor smallholder communities in tropical and subtropical countries. Land Maxing adds domestication of overlooked indigenous food tree species, and the commercialization of their marketable products, to existing land restoration efforts while empowering local communities, enhancing food sovereignty, and boosting the local economy and overall production. These agroecological and socio-economic interventions sustainably restore and intensify subsistence agriculture replacing conventional negative trade-offs with fortifying ‘trade-ons’. Land Maxing is therefore productive, regenerative, remunerative and transformative for farming communities in the tropics and sub-tropics. Through the development of resilience at all levels, Land Maxing uniquely addresses the big global issues of environmental degradation, hunger, malnutrition, poverty and social injustice, while mitigating climate change and restoring wildlife habitats. This buffers subsistence farming from population growth and poor international governance. The Tropical Agricultural Association International is currently planning a programme to up-scale and out-scale Land Maxing in Africa. Full article

Regional vulnerability manifests in various ways, one of which is food insecurity. Food insecurity is a global challenge and a key focus of Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to achieve zero hunger. This study aims to assess the level of regional vulnerability to food insecurity for 34 provinces in Indonesia. The components of vulnerability are defined by exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity, while the dimensions of food insecurity are assessed through availability and access-utility. This study employed the composite index method to assess regional vulnerability to food insecurity in Indonesia for the year 2021. The analysis involved three calculation steps and utilized a subjective direct technique for indicator weighting. The findings emphasize the significant role of exposure in a region’s susceptibility to food insecurity. Mapping the conditions of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity indicates that 11.7% of Indonesian provinces are extremely vulnerable, with high exposure and sensitivity, and low adaptive capacity. To address these issues, these provinces should focus on diversifying food sources, improving market access for farmers, investing in essential agricultural infrastructure, and enhancing the agricultural sector through human resource development. The global transition to a digital era is crucial for society, as most daily activities are driven by digital technologies aimed at enhancing productivity and efficiency in the production of food, fibers, and bioenergy. However, the segregation of digital techniques and equipment in both rural and urban areas poses significant obstacles to technological efforts aimed at combating hunger, ensuring sustainable agriculture, and fostering innovations aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 02 and 09). Rural regions, which are often less connected to technological advancements, require digital transformation to shift from subsistence farming to market-integrated production. Recent efforts to expand digitalization in these areas have shown promising results. Digital agriculture encompasses terms such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and precision agriculture integrating information and communication with geospatial and satellite technologies to manage and visualize natural resources and agricultural production. This digitalization involves both internal and external property management through data analysis related to location, climate, phytosanitary status, and consumption. By utilizing sensors integrated into unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and connected to mobile devices and machinery, farmers can monitor animals, soil, water, and plants, facilitating informed decision-making. An important limitation in studies on nutritional diagnostics is the lack of accuracy validation based on plant responses, particularly in terms of yield. This issue is observed even in conventional leaf tissue analysis methods. The absence of such validation raises concerns about the reliability of digital tools under real field conditions. To ensure the effectiveness of spectral reflectance-based diagnostics, it is essential to conduct additional studies in commercial fields across different regions. These studies are crucial to confirm the accuracy of these methods and to strengthen the development of digital and precision agriculture. Full article

The concept of ‘food justice’ recognizes the systemic injustices embedded in the U.S. food system and the urgent need for transformative policies to ensure equitable access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally relevant food. Limited access to these foods drives food insecurity and increases the prevalence of diet-related diseases in low-income and minority communities. Dominant narratives that individualize hunger and food insecurity often blame the individual and overlook the underlying structural factors that sustain these issues. These narratives have considerable influence. They shape public opinion and can also guide policy decisions. This commentary explores the goals of the food justice movement in the U.S., describes how the food and racial justice movements intersect, and examines the role of commercial marketing and public policy in shaping the food justice discourse. We also reflect on the efforts that should be made to reframe these dominant narratives and facilitate meaningful change in the food environment. Full article

Cropland abandonment (CA) is an increasingly severe global issue, with significant implications for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. In China, widespread CA is particularly evident in remote mountainous regions. However, the rugged terrain and highly fragmented cropland pose significant challenges in mapping abandoned cropland with high precision using remote sensing technology. Moreover, CA is the result of multi-level factors, yet previous studies have primarily analyzed its driving factors from a single level, leading to a lack of comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms. We took Sichuan Province, located in the mountainous regions of Western China, as a case study, utilizing satellite-derived high-precision CA maps to reveal the spatiotemporal patterns of CA. Additionally, we employed hierarchical linear model to explore the determinants of CA and their interactions at both county and municipal levels. The results indicate that the CA rate decreased continuously from 6.75% in 2019 to 4.47% in 2023, with abandoned cropland exhibiting significant spatial clustering. High-value clusters were predominantly concentrated in the western mountainous areas, and hotspots of CA exhibited a general migration trend from the northeast to the southwest. Furthermore, we found that CA is influenced by multi-level factors, with 61% and 39% of the variance in CA being explained at the county and municipal levels, respectively. The agglomeration index of cropland (AI) is a key determinant at the county level, with the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and the distance to roads also playing significant roles. At the municipal level, urbanization rate and the proportion of non-agricultural employment (PNAE) are dominant factors, and an increase in PNAE weakens the negative impact of AI on CA rates. To curb CA in mountainous areas, we recommend implementing land consolidation projects, improving rural land transfer markets, and strengthening legal mechanisms to combat CA. Our study has broad application prospects, providing critical support for assessing the ecological and environmental consequences of CA and exploring the potential of reutilizing abandoned cropland for food production, bioenergy, and carbon sequestration. Bamboo has recently garnered international recognition for its nutritional and medicinal properties, which contribute significantly to the culinary, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical sectors. Every component of the bamboo plant—rhizome, culm, bark shavings, shoots, leaves, roots, and seeds—possesses useful applications. Bamboo shoots, as a type of food, have been consumed for a long time due to their nutritional and edible qualities, as well as their economic value. Other parts of bamboo, such as leaves and culms, can also be used in food applications. Commercial markets in various countries offer a variety of bamboo-based products, including those that are dried, fermented, pickled, and thermally processed. This article provides an overview of the use of all edible bamboo parts as foods and related products as well as their nutritional benefits. A wide range of traditional food products derived from bamboo, including industrial products and some novel products, was investigated. It is possible that the promotion of bamboo as a staple food could offer substantial promise in addressing the worldwide concerns regarding hunger, food insecurity, and environmental degradation. Biotechnology assumes a paramount role in addressing micronutrient deficiencies. The promotion thereof and the augmentation of public awareness are indispensable for implementation. The advancement of big data presents challenges due to the plethora of information and the constrained processing capacity, thereby inducing difficulties in consumer decision-making. The study is obliged to intensify information dissemination to empower consumers to apprehend the value of selenium-enriched products as an integral constituent of positive nutrition guidance. The study undertook an experiment related to nutrition information acquisition, in which participants provided relevant interferences. The study utilized the structural equation model (SEM) and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to analyze the data. The study arrived at three research conclusions. Firstly, the furnishing of valuable information constitutes a significant factor in motivating consumers to purchase selenium-rich agricultural products. Secondly, the communication of brand information holds crucial significance in shaping the perception of product advantages and plays a salient role in the promotion and construction of selenium-rich agricultural products. Finally, the dissemination of health information can be incorporated into the process of promoting selenium-rich agricultural products. This conforms to the urgent necessity to address hidden hunger and establish a value identity. Full article

Greenflation or inflation for green energy transition in Europe becomes a structural problem of new scarcity and poverty, under Austrian Economics analysis. The current European public agenda on the Green Deal and its fiscal and monetary policies are closer to coercive central planning, against the markets, economic calculus, and Mises’ theorem. In this paper, attention is paid to the green financial bubble and the European greenflation paradox: in order to achieve greater future social welfare, due to a looming climate risk, present wellbeing and wealth is being reduced, causing a real and ongoing risk of social impoverishment (to promote the SGD 13 on climate action, it is violated by SGD 1–3 on poverty and hunger and 7–12 on affordable energy, economic growth, sustainable communities, and production). According to the European Union data, the relations are explained between green transition and public policies (emissions, tax, debt, credit boom, etc.), GDP variations (real–nominal), and the increase of inflation and poverty. As many emissions are reduced, there is a decrease of GDP (once deflated) and GDP per capita, evidencing social deflation, which in turn means more widespread poverty and a reduction of the middle-class. Also, there is a risk of a green-bubble, as in the Great Recession of 2008 (but this time supported by the European Union) and possible stagflation (close to the 1970s). To analyze this problem generated by mainstream economics (econometric and normative interventionism), this research offers theoretical and methodological frameworks of mainline economics (positive explanations based on principles and empirical illustrations for complex social phenomena), especially the Austrian Economics and the New-Institutional Schools (Law and Economics, Public Choice, and Comparative Constitutional Economics). The rapid increase in the global human population, particularly in Low-Income Food Deficit Countries (LIFDCs), causes severe food shortages. Food shortages are complex and can be linked to economic, environmental, social, and political variables. Harnessing village chicken products serves as a cheap commercial chicken substitute to address food shortages. The consumption and sales of protein products from village chickens, such as meat, eggs, and internal organs, ensures food security and poverty alleviation in limited-resource communities. However, village chickens have poor-quality end products due to poor management and animal-rearing resources. Village chicken production challenges include the absence of high-quality feed, biosecurity, recordkeeping, housing, and commercial marketing of its end products. Management being based on cultural gender roles instead of the possession of formal poultry management training further limits village chicken production. To improve village chicken end-product quality, poultry management trainings for rural women are suggested due to studies showing that women mainly manage village chicken production. Furthermore, to create a formal market share of village chickens, sensory evaluations need to be conducted using mainstream poultry consumers. This review examined the potential contribution of village chickens in achieving Sustainable Development Goals—one, No Poverty and two, Zero Hunger—to benefit vulnerable groups in resource-poor communities. Sustainability targets set by the United Nations, such as Zero Hunger by 2030, encourage the search for innovative solutions to enhance food production while preserving the environment. Alternative protein sources for feed, while conventional resources like soymeal and fishmeal become more expensive and scarcer, is one of the possibilities. Studies on substituting fishmeal with insect meal show promising results in terms of animal growth and feed efficiency. This paper aims to assess the socio-economic benefits and costs of insect meal substituting fishmeal in feed and to highlight the factors influencing performance most. The study evaluates the economic value of insect-based products, waste reduction, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions as socio-economic benefits. It combines empirical data derived from laboratory trials and two case studies covering black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) and yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). Current analyses reveal negative socio-economic balances, emphasizing that reduction of operating and investment costs through upscaling and technological advancements can give a positive move, as well as factors such as current market valuations for nutrients can change significantly. Thus, a negative balance at the moment does not mean that insect rearing, and larva processing are not desirable from a long-term socio-economic perspective. Full article

In semi-arid Northern Ghana, smallholder farmers face food insecurity and financial risk due to climate change. In response, the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) model, a community-led microfinance model, has emerged as a promising finance and climate resilience strategy. VSLAs offer savings, loans, and other financial services to help smallholder farmers cope with climate risks. In northern Ghana, where formal financial banking is limited, VSLAs serve as vital financial resources for smallholder farmers. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how VSLAs can bridge financial inclusion and climate resilience strategies to address food insecurity. From a sustainable livelihoods framework (SLF) perspective, we utilized data from a cross-sectional survey of 517 smallholder farmers in northern Ghana’s Upper West Region to investigate how VSLAs relate to food insecurity. Results from an ordered logistic regression show that households with membership in a VSLA were less likely to experience severe food insecurity (OR = 0.437, p < 0.01). In addition, households that reported good resilience, owned land, had higher wealth, were female-headed, and made financial decisions jointly were less likely to experience severe food insecurity. Also, spending time accessing the market increases the risk of severe food insecurity. Despite the challenges of the VSLA model, these findings highlight VSLAs’ potential to mitigate food insecurity and serve as a financially resilient and climate-resilient strategy in resource-poor contexts like the UWR and similar areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. VSLAs could contribute to achieving SDG2, zero hunger, and SDG13, climate action. However, policy interventions are necessary to support and scale VSLAs as a sustainable development and food security strategy in vulnerable regions. Full article

The rapidly increasing population and climate change pose a great threat to our current food systems. Moreover, the high usage of animal-based and plant-based protein has its drawbacks, as these nutritional sources require many hectares of land and water, are affected by seasonal variations, are costly, and contribute to environmental pollution. Single-cell proteins (SCPs) are gaining a lot of research interest due to their remarkable properties, such as their high protein content that is comparable with other protein sources; low requirements for land and water; low carbon footprint; and short production period. This review explores the use of food waste as a sustainable feedstock for the advancement of SCP processes. It discusses SCP studies that exploit food waste as a substrate, alongside the biocatalysts (bacteria, fungi, yeast, and microalgae) that are used. The operational setpoint conditions governing SCP yields and SCP fermentation routes are elucidated as well. This review also demonstrates how the biorefinery concept is implemented in the literature to improve the economic potential of “waste-to-protein” innovations, as this leads to the establishment of multiproduct value chains. A short section that discusses the South African SCP scenario is also included. The technical and economic hurdles facing second-generation SCP processes are also discussed, together with future perspectives. Therefore, SCP technologies could play a crucial role in the acceleration of a “sustainable protein market”, and in tackling the global hunger crisis. Full article

This review delves into the mesmerizing technology of nano-agrochemicals, specifically pesticides and herbicides, and their potential to aid in the achievement of UN SDG 17, which aims to reduce hunger and poverty globally. The global market for conventional pesticides and herbicides is expected to reach USD 82.9 billion by 2027, growing 2.7% annually, with North America, Europe, and the Asia–Pacific region being the biggest markets. However, the extensive use of chemical pesticides has proven adverse effects on human health as well as the ecosystem. Therefore, the efficacy, mechanisms, and environmental impacts of conventional pesticides require sustainable alternatives for effective pest management. Undoubtedly, nano-agrochemicals have the potential to completely transform agriculture by increasing crop yields with reduced environmental contamination. The present review discusses the effectiveness and environmental impact of nanopesticides as promising strategies for sustainable agriculture. It provides a concise overview of green nano-agrochemical synthesis and agricultural applications, and the efficacy of nano-agrochemicals against pests including insects and weeds. Nano-agrochemical pesticides are investigated due to their unique size and exceptional performance advantages over conventional ones. Here, we have focused on the environmental risks and current state of nano-agrochemicals, emphasizing the need for further investigations. The review also draws the attention of agriculturists and stakeholders to the current trends of nanomaterial use in agriculture especially for reducing plant diseases and pests. A discussion of the pros and cons of nano-agrochemicals is paramount for their application in sustainable agriculture. Full article

Transport conditions have the potential to alter the physiological responses of animals to the psychological or physical stress of transport. Transportation may introduce multiple physical and psychological stressors to unweaned calves and adult cattle, including noise, overcrowding, food and water deprivation, extreme temperatures, commingling with unfamiliar animals, handling by unfamiliar humans, and being placed in a novel environment upon arrival. Apart from these factors, the type of road and even driving skill may affect the welfare of animals. One of the concerns regarding cattle transport is that the handling and marketing of animals prior to a journey may lengthen the period of feed withdrawal. Furthermore, feed withdrawal can impact animal welfare through hunger and metabolic stress. Transportation is also associated with a decrease in animal performance as well as an increase in the incidence of bovine respiratory disease. It is well established that the transportation of cattle is a stressor that causes a quantifiable response; however, excessive stress during transport resulting in physiological or pathological changes can be reduced with best management practices. The objective of this review was to analyse the available scientific literature pertaining to the transport by road of cattle, including unweaned calves. Full article

Global Patterns of Agricultural Investment and Food Security: Evidence from the fDi Markets Database

The number of hungry people is on the rise and more efforts are needed to improve the global food security status. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) proposes more investment in the agricultural sector to boost production and alleviate hunger. However, there are fewer papers that distinguish enterprises investment from public investment. In this case, we take advantage of detailed investment data in the fDi Markets database to explore the global patterns of agricultural investment. In particular, we identify the top destination countries based on aggregate and sub-sectoral agricultural investment data. Then we investigate the relationship between agricultural investment and food security, which is measured by per capita protein intake. Finally, we propose some suggestions from the investment motivation perspective to help food-insecure countries to attract overseas investment. We find that developed countries are the primary sources of global agricultural investment and these sources have been becoming more diverse in the past decade. It implies the trend towards a more inclusive investment environment worldwide. However, the global distribution of agricultural investment is uneven as food-insecure countries only receive 20% of the global agricultural investment. The top three destination countries, USA, China, and Russia, have a relatively high food security level. In contrast, countries suffering from food insecurity receive fewer investment projects, and most of which are on a small scale. Given the limited socio–economic development status in food-insecure countries, it is essential for all levels of society to help them and contribute to ending hunger. Full article
