Cinnamaldehyde (CA) is a potential substitute for antibiotic growth promoters in animal breeding. In this study, we investigated its effects as a dietary supplement on growth performance, serum antioxidant capacity, intestinal digestive enzyme activities, intestinal morphology, and caecal microbiota in meat rabbits. Weaned meat rabbits (n = 450) were randomly assigned to five groups, Groups A, B, C, D, and E, and fed 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg CA diets, respectively, for 47 days. Biological samples including serum (antioxidants), duodenal/caecal content (enzymes), intestinal tissue (morphology), and caecal digesta (microbiota) were collected at day 47 postweaning for analysis. Groups C and D showed significantly higher final body weights than Group A, with Group D (150 mg/kg CA) demonstrating superior growth performance including 11.73% longer duodenal villi (p < 0.05), 28.6% higher microbial diversity (p < 0.01), and 62% lower diarrhoea rate versus controls. Digestive enzyme activity as well as serum antioxidant capacity increased with increasing CA dose, Microbiota analysis revealed CA increased fibre-fermenting Oscillospiraceae (+38%, p < 0.01) while reducing Ruminococcaceae (−27%, p < 0.05). Thus, dietary CA supplementation at 150 mg/kg was identified as the optimal CA dose for improving meat rabbit production. These findings highlight CA as a functional feed additive for promoting sustainable rabbit production. Full article

Digestibility, together with intake, is the main factor affecting animal productivity. It can be assessed in vivo by measuring total feed intake and faecal output (time-consuming and labour-intensive) or with the aid of substances known as markers. Internal markers such as acid insoluble ash (AIA) or undigestible neutral detergent fibre (uNDF) have been alleged to be preferable for digestibility estimations. The use of AIA and uNDF for digestibility estimation in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets has been rarely documented; hence, the objectives of the present paper were to compare digestibility values obtained by total faecal collection vs. AIA or uNDF (Experiment 1), to compare digestibility values obtained using Cr2O3 as an external marker vs. AIA or uNDF (Experiment 2), and to compare digestibility values obtained using AIA vs. uNDF in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets (Experiment 3). Faecal recoveries of AIA and uNDF (Experiment 1) were very variable and likely influenced by contamination of faeces and/or feedstuffs with soil and/or dust. Then, the regressions between digestibility values obtained in metabolism cages or using Cr2O3 as an external marker and AIA or uNDF were not significant. The use of these two latter markers for estimation of digestibility in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets is not recommended. Full article

Malt bagasse is the primary solid waste product from the brewing process, with notable environmental implications. Due to its nutritional value, it has potential as animal feed, primarily through ensilage. Alfalfa pellets can enhance this silage by adding digestible nitrogen and fibre. However, the high moisture content favours microbial contamination, particularly by fungi like Fusarium, which produces harmful mycotoxins. This study evaluated the impact of winter silage on fungal diversity, Fusarium presence, and mycotoxin contamination in malt bagasse, comparing the pre- and post-silage stages with the addition of alfalfa pellets. Results showed a diverse range of fungi, including Mucor, Cladosporium, Fusarium, and Penicillium, as well as yeasts. Fungal contamination was higher before silage, although the addition of alfalfa increased it after silage was produced. Fusarium verticillioides was the most common Fusarium species. Mycotoxin analysis detected DON (1.4 ppb) in only one sample. A two-month winter silage process under cold-temperate conditions appears to reduce fungal contamination and preserve feed quality. These findings support silage as a circular strategy to manage brewery waste safely, but further research and policy measures are needed to minimise biological risks in the brewing and livestock sectors amid climate change. Three purple prairie clover (PPC; Dalea purpurea Vent.) varieties, namely Common seed (CS), AC Lamour (ACL) and Bismarck (BIS), were established in plots of irrigated land (rain-fed plus irrigation, Lethbridge, AB) and dryland (rain-fed only, Swift Current, SK) to assess its agronomic characteristics and nutritive value under different ecoclimate and growing conditions in Western Canada. Each seed source was replicated in four test plots arranged as a randomized complete block design at each experimental site. Forage mass on dry matter (DM) basis, canopy height, proportions of leaf and stem and nutritive value were determined at vegetative (VEG), full flower (FF) and late flower (LF) phenological stages. The forage masses of the three PPC varieties were similar (p < 0.05) at each phenological stage with the mean values for VFG, FF and LF being 4739, 4988 and 6753 kg DM/ha under the Lethbridge irrigated conditions, and 1423, 2014 and 2297 kg DM/ha under the Swift Current dryland conditions. The forage mass was higher (p < 0.001) under Lethbridge irrigation than under Swift Current dryland conditions and increased (p < 0.05) with maturity. The three varieties had similar concentrations of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and crude protein (CP) and in vitro DM digestibility (DMD) at each phenological stage, but CP concentration and in vitro DMD decreased (p < 0.001) whilst NDF and ADF concentration increased (p < 0.001) with maturity. Purple prairie clover grown at Lethbridge irrigated land had higher (p < 0.001) DMD, OM and CP, but lower (p < 0.001) NDF, ADF and condensed tannin concentrations than that grown at Swift Current dryland conditions. These results indicate that PPC has great potential as an alternative legume forage for the cattle industry. Full article

This study evaluates the effects of solid-state fermentation inoculated with Aspergillus spp. on the nutritional profile of selected agro-industrial by-products (AIBPs: cowpea shell, groundnut shell, soybean hull, and maize shaft). These AIBPs were assessed as potential feedstuffs in weaner rabbit diets, which often exhibit digestive disorders when introduced to highly lignified feed ingredients. The AIBPs were milled to a particle size of 2 mm, sterilized, and subjected to fermentation with Aspergillus spp. under microaerophilic conditions at 28 ± 2 °C for 10 days. Samples (four replicates per treatment) were analyzed for chemical constituents (mineral and proximate composition, anti-nutritional factors, and fibre fractions) before and after fermentation. Digestible energy and digestibility coefficient of gross energy were calculated. Data were subjected to two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). There was an increase (p < 0.05) in mineral profile, proximate composition, digestible energy, digestibility coefficient of gross energy, and dry matter, with a reduction (p < 0.05) in crude fibre, fibre fractions, and anti-nutritional factors. It was concluded that fermentation with Aspergillus spp. improved the nutritional value of the selected agro-industrial by-products. Therefore, fermented materials possess a better nutritional profile to be used in feeding programs for weaner rabbits. This will ensure sustainable animal production and add value to agricultural waste, which would otherwise constitute an environmental nuisance. Full article

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a growing environmental concern, particularly in marine ecosystems. This study investigated the presence and effects of MPs in the common dentex (Dentex dentex), a commercially and ecologically important species in the Mediterranean Sea. Fish (n = 22) were collected from Ibiza’s coastal waters (western Mediterranean, Spain), and their gastrointestinal tracts were analysed to determine MP ingestion rates and potential physiological impacts. MPs were detected in 90.9% of the specimens, with an average of 6.6 ± 1.2 MPs per individual. Fibres accounted for 78.9% and fragments for 21.1%. Stress and detoxification biomarkers were assessed by categorizing fish into two groups based on MP load: low (<6 MPs) and high (≥6 MPs). Fish with higher MP loads showed significantly increased detoxification and antioxidant enzyme activities in the digestive tract, while malondialdehyde levels remained similar between groups. No significant differences were observed in liver biomarkers. These findings indicate that MP ingestion triggers physiological responses in D. dentex, activating antioxidant and detoxification defences in the digestive tract. However, the lack of response in the liver suggests that the MP load is not sufficient to induce systemic changes. Further research is needed to assess long-term consequences on fish health and ecosystem sustainability. Full article

A study was conducted using 144 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (22 weeks old) to assess the impact of exogenous enzymes on energy utilisation and ileal nutrient digestibility in diets containing 300 g/kg wheat distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS). A basal diet was prepared and divided into eight treatments: a control (C) and diets supplemented with 2000 units/kg xylanase (XYL), 500 units/kg phytase (PHY), and 4000 units/kg protease (PRO), individually and in combination. The diets were fed for nine days to six coops, each housing three birds. Feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were recorded. The feed and excreta were analysed for gross energy, and the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) was calculated. On the final day, the birds were euthanised, and ileal digesta were collected, freeze-dried, and analysed for the digestibility coefficients of dry matter (DM), nitrogen, fat, and neutral detergent fibres (NDFs). XYL supplementation improved (p = 0.035) dietary AME but did not affect (p > 0.05) DM, nitrogen, fat, or NDF digestibility. No significant effects (p > 0.05) were observed for PHY or PRO, and no interactions (p > 0.05) were found between enzyme combinations. Substrates in experimental diets involving various enzyme combinations should be given careful consideration. Full article

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of applying a 50% wheat grain diet with those of a diet with 3% additional dietary fibre from various sources on the development of broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tract and its related organs and to model this phenomenon based on data obtained from 35-day-old chickens using multiple regression equations. The use of various structural components, including oat hull (OH), sunflower hull (SH), sugar beet pulp (SBP), and wheat bran (WB), in proportions of 3% of the diet not only affects digestive processes in broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tract but also causes a change in the length of their intestinal sections or the weight of related organs. These effects can be taken into account when creating an experimental model, the results of which can at least be partially applicable to human studies. The use of OH and SH (3%) in the birds’ diets resulted in a significantly higher body weight (p < 0.05) compared with the use of SBP and WB. OH in the diet significantly increased (p < 0.01) the weight of the chicken’s gizzards compared with the other dietary fibre sources, apart from SH. On the other hand, the weight of the proventriculus in chickens fed the diet containing OH was significantly lower than that of the chickens fed the diet containing SBP (p < 0.05). The use of SH in the diet caused a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in the weight of the chickens’ heart. Compared with other additional sources of dietary fibre, OH in the diet also significantly increased (p < 0.05) the lengths of the small and large intestines, as well as the total length of the intestines. A correlation analysis showed a significant, average, positive relationship (p < 0.05) between the content of TDF in the diet and the weight of the gizzard and indicated a significant positive correlation between the lengths of the jejunum and the remaining sections of the intestines. Additionally, the regression equation models indicated a significant effect (p < 0.01) of all the independent variables on the jejunal, ileal, and caecal lengths and the liver weight. The application of the regression model confirmed significant changes in the small intestine and liver weight depending on the type of dietary fibre and other independent variables, which can also be taken into account when assessing diseases in people with thin intestines. However, further studies with separate models still need to be conducted using experiments including both soluble and insoluble fibre. Full article

The main objective of this research was to observe the effects of feed restriction on caecum microbiota and metabolites in rabbits. Forty-eight male 8-week-old rabbits with similar body weights (1872.11 ± 180.85 g) were randomly assigned to two treatments according to completely randomized design: (1) the control group received ad libitum access to feed (AL), and (2) the treatment received 80% of the feed consumed by the control (FR). The results showed that FR did not differ (p > 0.05) for average daily weight gain or feed conversion ratio between the two groups. FR treatment led to a significant increase (p < 0.05) in acid detergent fibre apparent faecal digestibility, nitrogen digestibility and retention, and gross energy digestibility and retention. The FR treatment showed significantly (p < 0.05) lower blood triglycerides, creatinine, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, malondialdehyde, and hydroxyl free radicals but significantly (p < 0.05) greater total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase. The FR group presented greater (p < 0.05) Firmicutes and Ruminococcus abundances but a lower (p < 0.05) Akkermansiaceae abundance in the caecal content. Moreover, 222 differentiated metabolites were identified, and beta-alanine metabolism was the top enriched pathway. Collectively, FR can improve nutrient utilisation, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, caecum microbiota, and metabolites in rabbits. Full article

Background: The average fibre consumption of 4–10-year-old children in the UK is 14.6 g per day, with only 14% of these children reaching the 20 g recommended by the SACN (UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition), and this ‘fibre gap’ may be most pronounced in communities with the lowest socioeconomic status. School breakfast clubs target children from disadvantaged communities, but their provision may favour lower-fibre foods, due to perceptions that children will reject higher-fibre foods. Our research programme aims to increase the fibre density, digestive-metabolic quality and acceptability of school breakfast provision. Methods: In Study 1, we examined the in vitro digestion of four novel bread products, to determine the relationship between fibre content and glucose release profile, and assess their suitability for sustaining school activity. In Study 2, we introduced the Prograins breads, alongside higher-fibre breakfast cereals and fresh fruit, to primary school breakfast clubs. Results: The Prograins bread products yielded lower peaks and more sustained glucose release curves than the ‘standard’ white bread control. Many children liked and chose the intervention foods, and the average fibre content of children’s breakfasts increased. Conclusions: We conclude from this study that nutritious, fibre-rich bread products can be acceptable to children and that higher-fibre breakfast provision is feasible, and we recommend larger-scale intervention and assessment to validate these real-world findings. This study aimed to evaluate the applicational possibilities of enzymatically modified apple pomace (AP) in conjunction with probiotics as value-added ingredients for the production of jelly candies. AP was enzymatically modified with Pectinex® Ultra Tropical, Viscozyme® L, and Celluclast® 1.5 L (Novozyme A/S, Bagsværd, Denmark), and the soluble and insoluble dietary fibre content was determined using the Megazyme kit (Megazyme International Ireland Ltd., Wicklow, Ireland), reducing sugar content using the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid assay. The technological properties of the modified AP, such as its swelling capacity, water-retention capacity, oil-retention capacity, bulk density, and static and thermal emulsion stability, were evaluated. Enzymatically modified AP hydrolysed with Celluclast® 1.5 L was used for the production of jelly candies supplemented with Bifidobacterium animalis DSM 20105. The survival of probiotics in the jelly candies during in vitro digestion, the viability of probiotics during candy storage, and candy quality characteristics were analysed. Enzymatically modified AP had different carbohydrate compositions and technological properties, depending on the enzyme preparation used. Although the viability of probiotics in the jelly candies decreased during storage, a significantly higher viability of B. animalis was determined in jelly candies supplemented with hydrolysed AP compared with control candies made without AP after digestion in the saline, gastric, and intestine phases. This study shows that Celluclast® 1.5 L can be used for increasing the soluble dietary fibre in AP (18.4%), which can be further applied, in conjunction with B. animalis, for added-value jelly candy production. Effects of Tithonia diversifolia Extract as a Feed Additive on Digestibility and Performance of Hair Lambs

Animal production requires efficiency, safety and environmental sustainability. Bioactive compounds from tropical plants could modulate ruminal fermentation, providing an alternative method to antibiotic treatment and addressing concerns about antibiotic resistance. In this study, the aim was to determine the effects of Tithonia diversifolia extract (TDE) on performance, intake, digestibility and blood parameters [i.e., glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT)] in crossbreed sheep. The main biocompounds of the TDE include caffeic acid (CA), quercetin (QCT), luteolin (LT) and apigenin (AP). Experiment 1: An in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) study was conducted to determine the optimal inclusion levels. The IVDM values were 73.09a, 82.03b, 81.01b, 73.20a and 74.51a for the control, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g/kg for the DM treatments, respectively (R-Sq adj = 0.857). The levels of 5 and 10 g were selected for the in vivo experiment. Experiment 2: Twenty-eight male crossbred hair lambs were assigned to four treatments (n = 7): control, 20 mg monensin/day, 5 g TDE/day and 10 g TDE/day groups. No differences in animal performance were observed, including body weight and feed conversion (p > 0.05). The TDE at 10 g/day improved NDF digestibility) (61.32%) and reduced the ruminal acetate to propionate ratio. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) were higher in 10 g TDE treatment with 66.41% and the lowest acetate production (67.82%) (p = 0.042), and propionate production (21.07%) were observed. The TDE were safe at 5 g and 10 g/day for liver function and exhibited lower BUN levels suggesting an improvement in protein metabolism. TDE extract at 10 g/day (TDE10), showed improvements in total tract digestibility of NDF and reduced the ruminal acetate to propionate ratio. However, due to TDE10 reducing the DM intake, the improvements in digestibility and ruminal fermentation were not reflected in growth performance improvements. Full article

We conducted a four-year cutting experiment on herbage yield, with three years focused on testing the effect of perennial ryegrass (PR) cultivars ‘Elena DS’, ‘Raminta’, and ‘Verseka’, along with a cultivar mixture and compositions with white clover (WC) and red clover (RC) diversity, on crude protein (CP), modified acid detergent fibre (MADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), and dry matter digestibility (DMD) content. PR cultivars and cultivar mixtures were sown alone (N150), and the PR ‘Elena DS’ and PR cultivar mixtures were also sown with each WC, or WC and RC (N0). The average four-year herbage productivity was the lowest in PR ‘Elena DS’ the and cultivar mixture/WC, followed by all of the pure PR swards, and the highest in PR ‘Elena DS’ and the cultivar mixture/WC+RC; however, the PR ‘Elena DS’/WC+RC mixture had the highest legume proportion and CP content. There was less NDF but also WSC in swards with legumes, but higher CP content than in pure PR swards; however, the highest CP content was in mixtures with RC. Among the grasses, PR ‘Verseka’ had lower NDF contents and a higher WSC than PR ‘Elena DS’, ‘Raminta’, and the cultivar mixture. Overall, this study revealed significant differences in the productivity of PR cultivars with a potential yield difference of up to 1.7 t ha−1. Full article

In order to limit the ever-increasing consumption of new resources for material formulations, regulations and legislation require us to move from a linear to a circular economy and to find efficient ways to recycle, reuse and recover materials. Taking into account the principles of material circularity and waste reuse, this research study aims to produce thermoplastic composites using two types of industrial waste from neighbouring companies, namely waste polypropylene (wPP) from household production and carbon-fibre-reinforced epoxy composite scrap from a pultrusion company. The industrial scrap of the carbon-fibre-reinforced epoxy composites was either machined/ground to powder (pCFRC) and used directly as a reinforcement agent or subjected to a chemical digestion process to recover the carbon fibres (rCFs). Both pCFRC and rCF, at different weight ratios, were melt-blended with wPP. Prior to melt blending, both pCFRC and rCF were analysed for morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pCFRC powder contains epoxy resin fragments with spherical to ellipsoidal shape and carbon fibre fragments. The rCFs are clean from the matrix, but they are slightly thicker and corrugated after the matrix digestion. Further, the morphologies of wPP/pCFRC and wPP/rCF were also investigated by SEM, while the thermal behaviour, i.e., transitions and changes in crystallinity, and thermal resistance were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The strength of the interaction between the filler (i.e., pCFRC or rCF) and the wPP matrix and the processability of these composites were assessed by rheological studies. Finally, the mechanical properties of the systems were characterised by tensile tests, and as found, both pCFRC and rCF exert reinforcement effects, although better results were obtained using rCF. The wPP/pCFRC results are more heterogeneous than those of the wPP/rCF due to the presence of epoxy and carbon fibre fragments, and this heterogeneity could be considered responsible for the mechanical behaviour. Further, the presence of both pCFRC and rCF leads to a restriction of polymer chain mobility, which leads to an overall reduction in ductility. All the results obtained suggest that both pCFRC and rCF are good candidates as reinforcing fillers for wPP and that these complex systems could potentially be processed by injection or compression moulding. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of treatment with sodium hydroxide on the nutritional value of banana (Musa acuminata) trees to see if they can be used as a source of fibre for ruminants since there is large banana production and consequently some waste. The samples were collected and dried in an oven with a controlled air flow. They were then sprinkled with a sodium hydroxide solution (2, 4, 6 and 8% of dry matter) and placed in a suitable container. The chemical properties were analysed. The results show that sodium hydroxide treatment leads to a significant decrease in neutral fibre and acid lignin contents in both leaves and pseudostems. A significant (p < 0.05) increase was observed in ash, and digestibility values were lower in leaves, confirming the values for neutral detergent fibres. The total amount of gas produced was measured after 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of incubation. The results showed that the gas production in the leaves was lower in all treatments compared to the pseudostem, which was consistent with the digestibility results. Analysis of the results showed that the best NaOH concentration to improve the nutritional value of M. acuminata was 6 and 8%. Full article
