Heat Risk Perception and Vulnerability in Puerto Rico: Insights for Climate Adaptation in the Caribbean

Extreme heat poses growing health risks in tropical regions, yet public perception of this threat remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study examines how residents in Puerto Rico perceived heat-related health risks and how these perceptions relate to vulnerability and protective behaviors during the extreme heat events of the summer of 2020. We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of 500 adults across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of Puerto Rico, using stratified probability sampling. The questionnaire assessed heat risk perception, sociodemographic characteristics, health status, prior heat exposure, and heat-related behaviors. While most participants expressed concern about climate change and high temperatures, fewer than half perceived heat as a high level of personal health risk. Higher levels of risk perception were significantly associated with being male, aged 50–64, unemployed, and in fair health, having multiple chronic conditions, and prior experience with heat-related symptoms. Those with symptoms were nearly five times more likely to report high levels of risk perception (OR = 4.94, 95% CI: 2.93–8.34). In contrast, older adults (65+), despite their higher level of vulnerability, reported lower levels of risk perception and fewer symptoms. Nighttime heat exposure was widespread and strongly associated with heat-related symptoms. Common coping strategies included the use of fans and air conditioning, though economic constraints and infrastructure instability limited access. The findings highlight the disparity between actual and perceived vulnerability, particularly among older adults. Public health strategies should focus on risk communication tailored to vulnerable groups and address barriers to heat adaptation. Strengthening heat resilience in Puerto Rico requires improved infrastructure, equitable access to cooling, and targeted outreach. Full article

A novel reflective metasurface (RMS) is proposed in this paper. The MS measures 128 × 128 × 2.794 mm3 and consists of a six-layer vertically stacked structure, with a liquid crystal (LC) cavity in the middle layer. A dual fan-shaped direct current (DC) bias circuit is designed to minimize the interaction between the radio frequency (RF) signal and the DC source, allowing control of the LC dielectric constant via bias voltage. This enables multi-band operation to improve communication capacity and quality for x-band devices. The polarization conversion (PC) structure employs an orthogonal anisotropic design, utilizing logarithmic functions to create two pairs of bowtie microstrip patches for linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LCPC). Simulation results show that for x-polarized incident waves, with an LC dielectric constant of εr = 2.8, left- and right-handed circularly polarized (LHCP and RHCP) waves are achieved in the frequency ranges of 8.15–8.46 GHz and 9.84–12.52 GHz, respectively. For εr = 3.9, LHCP and RHCP are achieved in 9–9.11 GHz and 9.86–11.81 GHz, respectively, and for εr = 4.6, they are in 8.96–9.11 GHz and 9.95–11.51 GHz. In the case of y-polarized incident waves, the MS reflects the reverse CP waves within the same frequency ranges. Measured results show that at εr = 2.8, the axial ratio (AR) is below 3 dB in the frequency ranges 8.16–8.46 GHz and 9.86–12.48 GHz, with 3 dB AR relative bandwidth (ARBW) of 3.61% and 23.46%, respectively. For εr = 4.6, the AR < 3 dB in the frequency range of 9.78–11.34 GHz, with a 3 dB ARBW of 14.77%. Finally, the measured and simulated results are compared to validate the proposed design, which can be applied to various applications within the corresponding operating frequency band. Full article

The Harry Potter fandom community around the world prefers a universe of wizards and witches that includes all people, but also has concerns about the author’s perspective regarding gender identity. This disjunction paralyzes the cultural reader with moral confusion, which is a danger to their emotional investment in the text. Although scholars have analyzed this phenomenon using fragmented prisms, such as social media activism, cognitive engagement, translation, pedagogy, and fan creativity, there is no unifying model that can be used to understand why reading pleasure endures. This article aims to fill this gap by examining these strands of research in a divergent manner, adopting a convergent mixed-methods study approach. Based on neurocognitive (EEG) values, cross-cultural focus groups, social media analysis, and corpus linguistics, we outline the terrain of reader coping mechanisms. We identify separate fan fractions and examine the corresponding practices. The results are summarized by proposing a model called the MDRL (Moral dissonance repair loop) which is a theoretical model that shows how translation smoothing, pedagogical reframing and fan-based re-moralization interact with one another in creating a system that enables the reader to be collectively able to obtain their relations with the text back to a manageable point and continue being engaged. This model makes a theoretical contribution to new areas in the study of fans, moral psychology, and cognitive literature. Full article

Quasi-Synchronous Frequency hopping (FH) Multiple Access (QS-FHMA) systems feature high communication efficiency, strong flexibility, and low operational costs, and they have been widely used in various FH communication scenarios such as satellite communication, military communication, and radio measurement. The low-hit zone (LHZ) FH sequences set (LHZ FHS set) plays a critical role in QS-FHMA systems, enabling user access with permissible time-delay offsets while maintaining superior performance. In this paper, three new methods to construct LHZ FHS sets based on m-sequences are proposed. The newly constructed sequence sets achieve optimality with respect to the Peng–Fan bound. Compared with existing LHZ FHS sets constructed from m-sequences, these new sequence sets offer more flexible parameters. Furthermore, due to the simple structure of m-sequences and their extensive adoption in engineering applications, the proposed new sequence sets possess significant practical value for engineering implementation. Cellular communication network factor 2 (CCN2, also known as CTGF) is a complex protein that regulates numerous cellular functions. This biomolecule exhibits dual functions, depending on the context, and can act as a matricellular protein or as a growth factor. CCN2 is an established marker of fibrosis and a well-known mediator of kidney damage, involved in the regulation of inflammation, extracellular matrix remodeling, cell death, and activation of tubular epithelial cell (TECs) senescence. In response to kidney damage, cellular senescence mechanisms are activated, linked to regeneration failure and progression to fibrosis. Our preclinical studies using a total conditional CCN2 knockout mouse demonstrate that CCN2 plays a significant role in the development of a senescence phenotype after exposure to a nephrotoxic agent. CCN2 induces cell growth arrest in TECs, both in the early phase and in the chronic phase of folic acid nephropathy (FAN), associated with cell-death/necroinflammation and fibrosis, respectively. Renal CCN2 overexpression was found to be linked to excessive collagen accumulation in tubulointerstitial areas, microvascular rarefaction, and a decline in renal function, which were observed three weeks following the initial injury. All these findings were markedly diminished in conditional CCN2 knockout mice. In the FAN model, injured senescent TECs are associated with microvascular rarefaction, and both were modulated by CCN2. In primary cultured endothelial cells, as previously described in TECs, CCN2 directly induced senescence. The findings collectively demonstrate the complexity of CCN2, highlight the pivotal role of cellular senescence as an important mechanism in renal injury, and underscore the critical function of this biomolecule in kidney damage progression. Motorsports tourism has a significant impact on host communities, especially when they are small communities. This research aims to segment the resident population of a very small rural municipality, Obejo, before the celebration of the Sierra Morena Rally in the province of Cordoba, Spain. The study is based on the principles of social exchange theory (SET) and the triple bottom line (TBL). In addition, it follows calls from the existing academic literature to explore a fourth dimension of impact perception, related to inclusion from the point of view of gender, age, and functional diversity. exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and non-hierarchical cluster analysis were used on a sample of 281 residents. A structure of four dimensions of impact perception is obtained: economic, social, environmental, and inclusive. Together, they explain just over 80% of the total variance. Three population segments are defined: motor enthusiasts, environmentally conscious fans, and admitted critics. This study underlines the need to expand the TBL framework with an inclusive dimension in motorsports tourism, emphasizing gender equality, intergenerational participation and functional diversity to foster more sustainable and socially cohesive events in rural areas. As digital fandom communities expand and diversify, user engagement patterns increasingly shape the social and emotional fabric of online platforms. In the era of Industry 4.0, data-driven approaches are transforming how online communities understand and optimize user engagement. In this study, we examine how different forms of activity, specifically posting and commenting, characterize fandom engagement on Weverse, a global fan community platform. By applying a clustering approach to large-scale user data, we identify distinct subsets of heavy users, separating those who focus on creating posts (post-heavy users) from those who concentrate on leaving comments (comment-heavy users). A subsequent linguistic analysis using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool revealed that post-heavy users typically employ a structured, goal-oriented style with collective pronouns and formal tones, whereas comment-heavy users exhibit more spontaneous, emotionally rich expressions enhanced by personalized fandom-specific slang and extensive emoji use. Building on these findings, we propose design implications such as pinning community-driven content, offering contextual translations for fandom-specific slang, and introducing reaction matrices that address the unique needs of each group. Taken together, our results underscore the value of distinguishing multiple dimensions of engagement in digital fandoms, providing a foundation for more nuanced platform features that can enhance positive user experience, social cohesion, and sustained community growth. Exploring the diversity and community structure of darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) and the associated environmental factors on an alluvial fan provides useful insights into the ecology of these landscape features. This study investigated Chaqikou in the Helan Mountains, which features unique alluvial fan landforms. Sample plots (200 × 200 m) were established at three positions: the fan top, fan middle, and fan edge. From May to October 2023, pitfall traps were used to survey beetle community composition and its relationship with environmental factors. Significant variations were observed in species composition and diversity indices across different months and sample plots. Strongly xerophilous species exhibited broader ecological niche breadth, while moderately xerophilous species tended to distribute in the mid-to-upper segments of alluvial fans. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis revealed temporal shifts in community composition, with beta diversity analysis showing that species nestedness dominated from June to August, while species replacement was prominent in May, September, and October. Redundancy analysis indicated that environmental factors affecting species distribution varied by plot. On the landscape scale, altitude was the primary factor affecting beetle distribution. Variance partitioning analysis showed that topographic, soil, and vegetation factors explained 51.7%, 20.2%, and 9.4% of the variation in the beetle community, respectively. It is evident that altitudinal gradients shape ecological filtering pressures by creating multidimensional heterogeneity in topography, soil properties, and vegetation coverage. The adaptive matching between Tenebrionid species’ biological traits and environmental factors ultimately governs the spatial distribution patterns of darkling beetle diversity in alluvial fan desert grasslands. In the evolving landscape of fandom economics, fan-driven crowdfunding has emerged as a powerful force, transforming audiences from passive consumers into active participants in celebrity branding. This study examines the roles of trust, loyalty, and perceived value in shaping crowdfunding participation within Chinese Weibo K-pop communities, where fans collectively finance large-scale public advertisements for their idols. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) on survey data from 260 participants, our findings reveal that trust and loyalty within fan communities significantly enhance engagement in crowdfunding activities, reinforcing perceived idol value and financial commitment to promotional campaigns. These insights position fan crowdfunding as a key driver of digital-era consumer culture, illustrating its impact on idol branding, online community dynamics, and the monetization of fandom engagement. By bridging fandom studies, digital marketing, and behavioral economics, this research provides theoretical advancements and practical strategies for entertainment agencies and celebrity managers seeking to harness the economic power of fan-driven marketing. As fandoms continue to reshape traditional advertising models, understanding the mechanisms behind community-based crowdfunding offers new avenues for brand engagement, audience monetization, and sustainable fan participation in the global entertainment industry. Comics are widely loved by fans around the world as a form of visual art and cultural communication. With the development of digitalization, automated comic content detection and segmentation and comic coloring systems have become important research directions for digital archiving, automatic translation, and visual content analysis. This paper proposes a composite network composed of efficient content extraction and colorization, which includes a comic extraction module and a comic colorization module based on an improved Generative Adversarial Network. It solves the problem of single performance and poor effect that has been present in previous models. In various performance comparison experiments, our model shows an excellent and robust performance. Full article

The lack of energy-saving design in national fitness centers has affected low-cost operation and indoor comfort. Existing studies mainly focus on the impact of lighting and heat on energy consumption in sports stadiums, highlighting the need for the comprehensive planning of natural ventilation design to improve energy efficiency. This study uses the national fitness center in Qingdao as a case study, collecting building environmental information through field measurements and questionnaire surveys. Four design elements were selected: the window-to-wall ratio (WWR), proportion of operable window area (OWAR), skylight area ratio (SAR), and floor plan layout. Through the utilization of Ladybug Tools in combination with Radiance and EnergyPlus, an annual energy consumption simulation under natural ventilation conditions was conducted using an airflow network model. This study found that the WWR has a significant impact on lighting, ventilation, and energy consumption. The optimal WWR configuration for the venue was determined to be 0.37 for the north facade, 0.26 for the east, 0.53 for the south, and 0.41 for the west. Compared to no natural ventilation, cooling energy consumption was reduced by 18.02%, and fan energy consumption decreased by 11.03%. The energy-saving effect was optimal when the OWAR was approximately 30%. When the SAR reached 5%, cooling and lighting energy consumption were significantly reduced, resulting in the lowest total energy consumption. The study also compared the energy consumption differences in various floor plan layouts under the influence of natural ventilation. This research evaluates the natural ventilation efficiency of community fitness centers, avoiding the hidden energy consumption transfer typical of traditional single-objective optimization methods, and improves the energy-efficient design approach for national fitness centers. This study investigates how effectively European football clubs communicate and implement accessibility features for disabled fans, aiming to develop a comprehensive framework for evaluating these practices. Using a multi-phase research design, the study analyzes disability support systems through semi-structured interviews with representatives from eleven European football clubs and a systematic analysis of club documentation. The methodology combined traditional qualitative analysis with large language model (LLM)-assisted content analysis, enabling robust identification of thematic patterns and performance indicators. Our findings reveal significant disparities in disability support practices, with larger clubs demonstrating structured approaches through dedicated Disability Access Officers (DAOs) and comprehensive communication strategies. Analysis identified three distinct performance tiers: Elite Performers, primarily well-resourced clubs with advanced systems; Solid Performers, mid-tier clubs with established frameworks; and Developing Systems, smaller organizations with emerging support structures. We present a validated Fan Communication Model incorporating key weighted criteria, including infrastructure, dedicated personnel, engagement, specific adaptations, ticketing, challenge management, and feedback systems. This model provides a standardized framework for evaluating disability support communication in football organizations. The research demonstrates the importance of integrating technological solutions with human-centered approaches while maintaining universal design principles. Our findings contribute to the sports accessibility literature and provide evidence-based recommendations for football organizations seeking to enhance their communication with disabled fans. This paper chronicles the CMC’s unique ability to foster creative expression within the repressive Soviet cultural framework, driven by a coalition of visionaries including such musicians as Sergey Kuryokhin and jazz theoreticians like Efim Barban. The narrative highlights the club’s seminal role in introducing Western avant-garde music to Soviet audiences, hosting groundbreaking performances, and cultivating a vibrant community of musicians, critics, and fans. Through an exploration of the CMC’s organisational strategies, cultural exchanges, and its ultimate closure following state intervention, the paper examines how the Club bridged underground and mainstream music while navigating ideological constraints. The research underscores the CMC’s legacy as a microcosm of resistance and innovation, situating its contributions within broader discussions of Soviet countercultural movements and global avant-garde practices. This work contributes to the historiography of Soviet underground culture, shedding light on the interplay between art, politics, and social transformation in late 20th-century Leningrad. This paper developed an artificial intelligence home environment monitoring system by using the Android Studio development platform. A database was constructed within a server to store sensor data. The proposed system comprises multiple sensors, a message queueing telemetry transport (MQTT) communication protocol, cloud data storage and computation, and end device control. A mobile application was developed using MongoDB software, which is a file-oriented NoSQL database management system developed using C++. This system represents a new database for processing big sensor data. The k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm was used to impute missing data. Node-RED development software was used within the server as a data-receiving, storage, and computing environment that is convenient to manage and maintain. Data on indoor temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentrations are transmitted to a mobile phone application through the MQTT communication protocol for real-time display and monitoring. The system can control a fan or warning light through the mobile application to maintain ambient temperature inside the house and to warn users of emergencies. A long short-term memory (LSTM) model and a convolutional neural network (CNN) model were used to predict indoor temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentrations. Average relative errors in the predicted values of humidity and carbon dioxide concentration were approximately 0.0415% and 0.134%, respectively, for data storage using the KNN algorithm. For indoor temperature prediction, the LSTM model had a mean absolute percentage error of 0.180% and a root-mean-squared error of 0.042 °C. The CNN–LSTM model had a mean absolute percentage error of 1.370% and a root-mean-squared error of 0.117 °C. Full article

As an important indicator of the level of urban economic development and the quality of the residents’ lives, housing prices are affected by various factors, such as the spatial distribution of the housing market, the housing characteristics of neighborhoods, and the location conditions. This paper summarizes the spatial distribution of housing prices in Qingdao using GIS, analyzing spatial distribution characteristics, and combines these with the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model to explore the influence of various factors, such as community attributes, location, transportation, and peripheral facilities on residential prices. The results show that from 2003 to 2023, residential housing prices in Qingdao exhibited a significant, continuous upward trend, with rapid growth in the early period and more stable growth in the later period; the spatial structure of residential prices evolved from a “single core” in Shinan District to a “double core + fan” structure involving both Shinan and Laoshan Districts, eventually forming a “double core + fan + mosaic” spatial layout; the green environment, congestion, leisure facilities, service management, and other community factors not only reflect the economic strengths and lifestyles of the residents, but also serve as key drivers of residential price differentiation.
