Fan growth serves as a critical performance indicator for the sustainable development of livestreaming e-commerce (LSE). However, existing research has paid limited attention to this topic. This study investigates the unique interactive advantages of LSE over traditional e-commerce by examining how interactivity drives fan growth through the mediating role of user retention and the moderating role of anchors’ facial attractiveness. To conduct the analysis, real-time data were collected from 1472 livestreaming sessions on Douyin, China’s leading LSE platform, between January and March 2023, using Python-based (3.12.7) web scraping and third-party data sources. This study operationalizes key variables through text sentiment analysis and image recognition techniques. Empirical analyses are performed using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression with robust standard errors, propensity score matching (PSM), and sensitivity analysis to ensure robustness. The results reveal the following: (1) Interactivity has a significant positive effect on fan growth. (2) User retention partially mediates the relationship between interactivity and fan growth. (3) There is a substitution effect between anchors’ facial attractiveness and interactivity in enhancing user retention, highlighting the substitution relationship between anchors’ personal characteristics and livestreaming room attributes. This research advances the understanding of interactivity’s mechanisms in LSE and, notably, is among the first to explore the marketing implications of anchors’ facial attractiveness in this context. The findings offer valuable insights for both academic research and managerial practice in the evolving livestreaming commerce landscape. Full article

Precise recognition of individual ovine specimens plays a pivotal role in implementing smart agricultural platforms and optimizing herd management systems. With the development of deep learning technology, sheep face recognition provides an efficient and contactless solution for individual sheep identification. However, with the growth of sheep, their facial features keep changing, which poses challenges for existing sheep face recognition models to maintain accuracy across the dynamic changes in facial features over time, making it difficult to meet practical needs. To address this limitation, we propose the lifelong biometric learning of the sheep face network (LBL-SheepNet), a feature decoupling network designed for continuous adaptation to ovine facial changes, and constructed a dataset of 31,200 images from 55 sheep tracked monthly from 1 to 12 months of age. The LBL-SheepNet model addresses dynamic variations in facial features during sheep growth through a multi-module architectural framework. Firstly, a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) module enhances discriminative feature representation through adaptive channel-wise recalibration. Then, a nonlinear feature decoupling module employs a hybrid channel-batch attention mechanism to separate age-related features from identity-specific characteristics. Finally, a correlation analysis module utilizes adversarial learning to suppress age-biased feature interference, ensuring focus on age-invariant identifiers. Experimental results demonstrate that LBL-SheepNet achieves 95.5% identification accuracy and 95.3% average precision on the sheep face dataset. This study introduces a lifelong biometric learning (LBL) mechanism to mitigate recognition accuracy degradation caused by dynamic facial feature variations in growing sheep. By designing a feature decoupling network integrated with adversarial age-invariant learning, the proposed method addresses the performance limitations of existing models in long-term individual identification. This comprehensive review examines the role of septoplasty in the pediatric population, emphasizing its therapeutic significance in relieving nasal obstruction and facilitating normal craniofacial growth. Despite the evident advantages of septoplasty, its application in young patients remains a subject of ongoing debate. This issue is primarily characterized by concerns regarding the still-developing immaturity of nasal cartilage, potential intraoperative and postoperative risks, and the current absence of robust data on long-term outcomes following septoplasty. Common complications such as bleeding, septal perforation, saddle nose deformity, and persistent nasal obstruction are reported in the literature; however, many studies lack long-term follow-up data on the incidence of these adverse events and revision rates, which may be higher compared to adult populations, often leading to the need for secondary surgical interventions. Strict inclusion criteria and comprehensive patient selection are paramount to maximize therapeutic success while minimizing complications. Current evidence suggests that appropriately indicated septoplasty can improve airway patency, support optimal facial development, and reduce the risk of secondary sinonasal pathology. There is a significant necessity for additional prospective, large-scale studies to establish standardized therapeutic guidelines and management strategies for this specific population, thereby ensuring effective and evidence-based pediatric otolaryngologic care. Aim: Pacifiers play a critical role in the early stages of craniofacial and palate development during infancy. While they provide comfort and aid in soothing, their use can also have significant impacts on the growth and function of the oral cavity. This study aimed to simulate and predict the behavior of six different types of pacifiers and their functional interaction with the tongue and palate, with the goal of understanding their potential effects on orofacial growth and development. Materials and Methods: Biomechanical analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) mathematical models was employed to evaluate the behavior of six different commercial pacifiers in contact with the palate and tongue. Three-dimensional solid models of the palate and tongue were based on the mathematical framework from a 2007 publication. This allowed for a detailed investigation into how various pacifier designs interact with soft and hard oral tissues, particularly the implications on dental and skeletal development. Results: The findings of this study demonstrate that pacifiers exhibit different interactions with the oral cavity depending on their geometry. Anatomical–functional pacifiers, for instance, tend to exert lateral compressions near the palatine vault, which can influence the hard palate and contribute to changes in craniofacial growth. In contrast, other pacifiers apply compressive forces primarily in the anterior region of the palate, particularly in the premaxilla area. Furthermore, the deformation of the tongue varied significantly across different pacifier types: while some pacifiers caused the tongue to flatten, others allowed it to adapt more favorably by assuming a concave shape. These variations highlight the importance of selecting a pacifier that aligns with the natural development of both soft and hard oral tissues. Conclusions: The results of this study underscore the crucial role of pacifier geometry in shaping both the palate and the tongue. These findings suggest that pacifiers have a significant influence not only on facial bone growth but also on the stimulation of oral functions such as suction and feeding. The geometry of the pacifier affects the soft tissues (tongue and muscles) and hard tissues (palate and jaw) differently, which emphasizes the need for careful selection of pacifiers during infancy. Choosing the right pacifier is essential to avoid potential negative effects on craniofacial development and to ensure that the benefits of proper oral function are maintained. Therefore, healthcare professionals and parents should consider these biomechanical factors when introducing pacifiers to newborns. Full article

Miller–Dieker Syndrome (MDS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a heterozygous deletion of approximately 26 genes within the MDS locus of human chromosome 17. MDS, which affects 1 in 100,000 babies, can lead to a range of phenotypes, including lissencephaly, severe neurological defects, distinctive facial abnormalities, cognitive impairments, seizures, growth retardation, and congenital heart and liver abnormalities. One hallmark feature of MDS is an unusually smooth brain surface due to abnormal neuronal migration during early brain development. Several genes located within the MDS locus have been implicated in the pathogenesis of MDS, including PAFAH1B1, YWHAE, CRK, and METTL16. These genes play a role in the molecular and cellular pathways that are vital for neuronal migration, the proper development of the cerebral cortex, and protein translation in MDS. Improved model systems, such as MDS patient-derived organoids and multi-omics analyses indicate that WNT/β-catenin signaling, calcium signaling, S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) homeostasis, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling, Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling, and others are dysfunctional in MDS. This review of MDS integrates details at the clinical level alongside newly emerging details at the molecular and cellular levels, which may inform the development of novel therapeutic strategies for MDS. Background and Clinical Significance: Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare, benign, but locally aggressive fibro-osseous neoplasm that primarily affects the craniofacial skeleton of children and adolescents. Early surgical intervention is often required due to the lesion’s rapid growth and potential for significant facial deformity. Long-term functional and esthetic rehabilitation following maxillary resection in early childhood remains a clinical challenge. Case Presentation: This case reports a unique long-term follow-up of a 22-year-old female patient who underwent partial maxillary resection at the age of five due to JOF. Initial reconstructive efforts failed, necessitating a removable prosthesis to restore function and appearance. The patient experienced persistent self-consciousness and social withdrawal during adolescence, attributed to altered facial esthetics and repeated surgical disappointment. Nevertheless, prosthetic rehabilitation significantly improved mastication, phonetics, facial symmetry, and psychological well-being. Conclusions: The enduring psychosocial and functional impact of early maxillary resection for JOF and the pivotal role of prosthodontic management in long term rehabilitation are highlighted. A multidisciplinary approach that includes psychological support is suggested. This case report is among the few reports documenting long-term prosthetic outcomes for pediatric JOF patients extending into adulthood. Full article

Introduction: Unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a severe orofacial birth defect characterized by improper fusion of facial parts and disturbed orofacial functions. The defect manifests as a gap in the orofacial tissues that is accompanied by defective healing patterns and chronic inflammation. The immune system’s defense factors modulate immunity, inflammation, and healing. Angiogenesis factors control blood-vessel formation. Therefore, these factors are vital in the immunological assessment and understanding of CLP morphopathogenesis. The aim of the study is to assess the distribution of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF- β1), the total macrophage population and the M2 subtype, heat-shock proteins (HSP) 60 and 70, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p50 and p65 subtypes in the affected tissue of children with CLP before and during primary dentition. Materials and Methods: Tissue samples were obtained from 15 patients aged from 3 to 8 months during veloplastic surgery. Five controls were used for comparison of data. Immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, semi-quantitative evaluation (from 0 to ++++), and statistics (Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman’s rank correlation) were used to evaluate the data for statistically significant differences and correlations between the groups. Results: Epithelial tissues affected by CLP presented with statistically significant increases in levels of VEGF (p = 0.007), total macrophages (p = 0.007), HSP60 (p = 0.001), NF-κB p65 (p = 0.000), and p50 (p = 0.045), but with a decrease in M2 macrophages (p = 0.025). Blood vessels in CLP-affected tissues showed a statistically significant increase in levels of NF-κB p65 (p = 0.003) and a statistically significant decrease in M2 numbers (p = 0.014). Connective tissue presented with no statistically significant differences. Spearman’s rank correlation revealed multiple statistically significant correlations—26 positive and 5 negative. Conclusions: Statistically significant changes in levels of VEGF and both NF-κB subtypes and numbers of total macrophages and M2 macrophages suggest a possible alteration of variable immune and inflammatory reactions and macrophage functions associated with the initiation and maintenance of the chronic process and the resulting damage. Background/Objectives: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM), previously known as hemifacial microsomia, is a congenital condition involving structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches. CFM is characterized by asymmetrical craniofacial growth, affecting the mandible, ear, orbit, soft tissues, and facial nerve. Functional therapy is among the treatment options for mild to moderate cases. This study aimed to assess the effect of functional therapy on mandibular growth in patients with CFM by comparing mandibular and condylar height on the affected and unaffected sides, using pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted on 14 patients treated with functional therapy with the Asymmetrical Functional Activator (AFA) appliance. Mandibular ramus height (Co-Go) and condylar height (Co-Is) were measured bilaterally on pre- (T0) and post-treatment (T1) panoramic radiographs. Growth differences and rates were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A significant increase in the mandibular ramus height (Co-Go) and in condylar height (Co-Is) was observed on the affected side from T0 to T1. The increase in mandibular ramus height was significantly greater on the affected side compared to the unaffected side (p = 0.0016). Although condylar height increased significantly on both sides over time, the difference in growth rate between sides was not statistically significant (p = 0.7148). Conclusions: Functional therapy may contribute to reducing mandibular asymmetry in CFM patients by enhancing the growth of the affected mandibular ramus, but the asymmetry may still be present at the end of treatment. These findings support its use in the early management of mild to moderate CFM. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aims to investigate the correlation between facial soft tissues, teeth, and skeletal growth patterns in order to provide an accurate diagnosis and orthodontic treatment plan using digital examination of lateral cephalograms. Achieving the best orthodontic outcome begins with an accurate, timely, and thorough diagnosis before starting the treatment phase. Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated the correlation between facial soft tissues, dental hard tissues, and skeletal growth patterns in 100 Romanian orthodontic patients (52 females, 48 males; median age 26 years) using digital lateral cephalograms. The measurements included skeletal parameters (ANB angle, FMA, Wits appraisal), dental parameters (inclinations of upper and lower incisors, interincisal angle), and soft tissue parameters (nasolabial angle, upper and lower lip positions relative to E-plane), all assessed using the AI-powered WEBCEPH software. Statistical analysis was conducted using RStudio (version 4.3.1). Results: A total of 100 subjects (52% female; median age, 26 years [range, 19–32 years]) were evaluated. No significant gender-based differences were found across cephalometric, soft tissue, or dental parameters. When stratified by ANB classification (Class I, 41%; Class II, 48%; Class III, 11%), significant differences emerged in the interincisal angle (p = 0.047), L1-to-LOP measurement (p < 0.001), lip-to-E-plane distances (p ≤ 0.009), Wits appraisal (p < 0.001), and the ANB angle itself (p < 0.001). Furthermore, stratification by FMA classification revealed expected differences in FMA values (p < 0.001) and a significant variation in the distribution of ANB classes (p = 0.042). All other cephalometric and soft tissue parameters remained comparable across FMA categories. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of integrating hard and soft tissue analyses in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning to achieve optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes. Background/Objectives: Orthodontic camouflage is a treatment strategy designed to address mild to moderate skeletal discrepancies through dental compensation when growth modification or orthognathic surgery (OGS) is unsuitable or declined by the patient. This report highlights the treatment of a child with a skeletal Class II pattern, Class II division 1 malocclusion, a 10.8 mm overjet, traumatic overbite, and unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis on the left side. Methods: The treatment plan focused on correcting the proclination of the maxillary incisors and improving the facial profile. A non-extraction camouflage approach using pre-adjusted edgewise appliances was implemented following a gap arthroplasty procedure on the left TMJ. Results: The patient achieved a satisfactory treatment outcome, with an ideal static and functional occlusion and significant improvement in facial esthetics. The approach effectively managed the severe mandibular retrognathia and TMJ ankylosis without OGS, thereby minimizing the risk of progressive condylar resorption. Conclusions: This case underscores the importance of personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s dental, skeletal, and individual needs. It demonstrates that non-surgical camouflage treatments can be a viable alternative for addressing severe mandibular retrognathia with TMJ ankylosis, achieving favorable esthetic and functional outcomes. Background/Objectives: Acromegaly is a rare chronic disease caused by excess growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth hormone 1 (IGF-1) due to a pituitary adenoma. In acromegaly patients, oral and facial manifestations, such as mandibular growth, macroglossia, and dental malocclusion, are common and can affect quality of life. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the diagnostic path of these patients, the impact that acromegaly had on their oral health, the medical figures involved, and the role played by their dentist. Methods: The data were collected via an anonymous questionnaire to study dental health, dental care, and acromegaly diagnosis and history and via validated questionnaires. The validated questionnaires used were the ESS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale) to assess daytime sleepiness, OHIP-14 (Oral Health Impact Profile-14) to study perceptions of oral health, and AcroQoL to explore quality of life. Results: We enrolled 90 acromegaly patients: 48% of the patients reported acromegaly oral manifestations and 73% reported facial changes. The most frequent oro-facial manifestations reported by the patients were jaw growth (41%), diastema (40%), macroglossia (39%), and increased size of cheekbones (35%). The median OHIP-14 value was 5 (min 0–max 43), and the highest values were recorded in the questions relating to pronunciation difficulties and problems eating due to dental problems, as well as discomfort with dental aesthetics. The patients’ sleep quality was rated as good by 33% of patients, decent by 47%, and bad by 20%. The median ACROQol score achieved by the patients was 69 (min 19, max 98). An inverse and statistically significant correlation was observed between OHIP-14 and AcroQoL scores (Spearman correlation coefficient—0.44, p = 0.0002). Conclusions: Oro-facial changes significantly affect quality of life in cases of acromegaly, yet dental professionals’ involvement in diagnosis and management is limited. Greater awareness among and integration of dental professionals could support earlier detection and improve patient outcomes. Full article

Enhancing Fairness and Efficiency in PV Energy Curtailment: The Role of East–West-Facing Bifacial Installations in Radial Distribution Networks

Electricity market reforms and decreasing technology costs have propelled residential solar PV growth leading distribution network operators to face operational challenges including reverse power flows and voltage regulation during peak solar generation. Traditional mono-facial south-facing PV systems concentrate production at midday when demand may be low, leading to high curtailment, especially for downstream households. This study proposes vertically installed east–west-facing bifacial PV systems (BiE and BiW), characterized by two energy peaks (morning and evening), which are better aligned with residential demand and alleviate grid constraints. Using load flow simulations, the performance of vertical bifacial configurations was compared against mono-facial systems across PV capacities from 1 to 20 kW. Fairness in curtailment was evaluated at 10 kW using Jain’s fairness index, the Gini index, and the Curtailment index. Simulation results show that BiE and BiW installations, especially at higher capacities, not only generate more energy but also are better at managing curtailment. At 10 kW, BiE and BiW increased bid energies by 815 kWh and 787 kWh, and reduced curtailed energy by 1566 kWh and 1499 kWh, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of bifacial PV installations in mitigating curtailment and improving fairness in energy distribution, supporting the demand for residential PV systems. Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is drug-induced bone destruction that is exposed for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks in patients who have not received head and neck radiotherapy and who have not been diagnosed with facial bone metastases. MRONJ treatment outcomes are unpredictable. Therefore, alternative treatment methods are being explored, such as blood-derived platelet-rich preparations enriched with growth factors, including advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF). The presence of growth factors may enhance healing and reduce post-procedure complications. There are no studies examining the effect of A-PRF on the healing of patients with MRONJ. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate treatment outcomes of patients with MRONJ surgically treated without and with the use of A-PRF. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included 28 patients who suffered from osteomyelitis due to MRONJ and underwent surgical treatment between 2019 and 2024. The patients were divided into two groups: the first group received surgical treatment without A-PRF, and the second group received surgical treatment with the application of A-PRF. This study analyzed demographic and clinical data, as well as treatment outcomes. Results: The patients were aged from 43 to 82 years. The most common cause of MRONJ was the administration of zoledronic acid for oncological reasons (22 patients, 78.6%), given intravenously. In 20 patients (71.4%), the antiresorptive treatment lasted longer than three years. The obtained healing distribution was binomial (presence or absence of healing). Estimation of the probability of healing using the maximum likelihood method provided a result of approximately 64%. The probability of ten or more healed patients in the A-PRF group was 41%. A-PRF helps with a probability of 59%, and without A-PRF, it was lower. Concomitantly, the differences between the group with A-PRF and without A-PRF were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The patients with MRONJ should have regular check-ups with radiological examinations at least every six months to detect possible recurrence. Treatment for MRONJ is long and difficult. Treatment of non-advanced lesions, without additional risk factors (such as treatment with zoledronate intravenously for oncological purposes for 3 years), showed a better prognosis. Sometimes, in addition to surgery, it is necessary to consider alternative methods. A-PRF may enhance MRONJ healing. However, there is no evidence of a significant effect of A-PRF on the healing of MRONJ. Full article

Background: Silver–Russell syndrome (SRS) is a genetic disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation. Affected individuals commonly present with low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, postnatal short stature, hemihypotrophy, characteristic facial features, and body asymmetry. Methods: This study includes 24 Taiwanese children with SRS aged 2 years to 13 years and 3 months who were recruited at MacKay Memorial Hospital and other Taiwan hospitals between January 2013 and December 2024. Functional independence was assessed using the Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM) to evaluate self-care, mobility, and cognition domains. Results: The mean total WeeFIM score was 106.9 ± 23.2 (range: 54–126), with mean self-care, mobility, and cognition scores of 44.4 ± 13.8 (maximum 56), 32.4 ± 5.1 (maximum 35), and 30.2 ± 6.0 (maximum 35), respectively. The results of the restricted cubic spline analysis reveal a clear positive linear correlation before school age (approximately 72 months), followed by a plateau (p for nonlinearity < 0.05). Traceable molecular data were available for thirteen participants, of whom nine (69%) had loss of methylation at chromosome 11p15 (11p15LOM), and four (31%) had maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (upd(7)mat). Of the 24 children, 46% required assistance with bathing, which was strongly correlated with self-care ability and body height. In contrast, most of the children had independence in mobility tasks such as walking and stair climbing. However, some required support in cognitive tasks, including problem-solving, comprehension, and expression. Overall, the included children reached a functional plateau later than the normative population, with the greatest delays in self-care and mobility domains. Conclusions: This study highlights that Taiwanese children with SRS require support in self-care and cognitive tasks. Functional independence in self-care and mobility domains was positively associated with body height. The WeeFIM questionnaire effectively identified strengths and limitations, emphasizing the need for individualized support in daily activities. Full article

Shame Regulation in Learning: A Double-Edged Sword

Previous research and classroom practices have focused on dispelling shame, assuming that it negatively impacts self-efficacy and performance, and overlook the potential for shame to facilitate learning. To investigate this gap, we designed an intervention with 132 tertiary education students (45.46% male, 64.4% European ethnicity) spanning diverse undergraduate majors to show how and why designing for experiences of shame and appropriately regulating them can differentially impact learning. Shame was induced through autobiographical recall, imagination, and failure-driven problem-solving before randomly assigning students to three conditions: two with explicit tips for either decreasing shame or maintaining shame (experimental groups) and one with no-regulation tips (control). Students worked on an introductory data science problem deliberately designed to lead to failure before receiving canonical instruction. Manipulation checks triangulating self-reported and facial expression analysis data suggested that shame was successfully regulated in the intended direction, depending on the condition. Our results, drawing on mixed-methods analyses, further suggested that relative to students decreasing shame, those who maintained shame during initial problem-solving had (i) similar post-test performance on a non-isomorphic question and improved performance on the transfer question, evidenced by accuracy in solving applied data science and inference tasks; (ii) complete reasoning across all post-test questions, as evidenced by elaborations justifying the usage of graphical and numerical representations across those tasks; and (iii) use of superior emotion regulation strategies focused on deploying attention to the problem and reappraising its inherently challenging nature with an approach orientation, as evidenced by a higher frequency of such codes derived from self-reported qualitative data during the intervention. Decreasing shame was as effective as not engaging in explicit regulation. Our results suggest that teaching efforts should be channeled to facilitate experiencing emotions that are conducive to goals, whether they feel pleasurable or not, which may inevitably involve emoting both positive and negative (e.g., shame) in moderation. However, it is paramount that emotional experiences are not merely seen by educators as tools for improved content learning but as an essential part of holistic student development. We advocate for the deliberate design of learning experiences that support, rather than overshadow, students’ emotional growth. Full article
