POI-Based Assessment of Sustainable Commercial Development: Spatial Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Commercial Facilities Around Urumqi Metro Line 1 Stations

Against the backdrop of rapid rail transit development, this study takes Urumqi Metro Line 1 as a case, using geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis and space syntax Pearson correlation coefficient methods. Focusing on an 800 m radius around station areas, the research investigates the distribution characteristics of commercial facilities and the impact of metro development on commercial patterns through the quantitative analysis and distribution trends of points of interest (POI) data across different historical periods. The study reveals that following the opening of Urumqi Metro Line 1, commercial facilities have predominantly clustered around stations including Erdaoqiao, Nanmen, Beimen, Nanhu Square, Nanhu Beilu, Daxigou, and Sports Center, with kernel density values surging by 28–39%, indicating significantly enhanced commercial agglomeration. Metro construction has promoted commercial POI quantity growth and commercial sector enrichment. Surrounding commercial areas have developed rapidly after metro construction, with the most significant impacts observed in the catering, shopping, and residential-oriented living commercial sectors. After the construction of the subway, the distribution pattern of commercial facilities presents two kinds of aggregation patterns: one is the original centripetal aggregation layout before construction and further strengthened after construction; the other is the centripetal aggregation layout before construction and further weakened after construction, tending to the site level of face-like aggregation. The clustering characteristics of different business types vary. Factors such as subway accessibility, population density, and living infrastructure all impact the distribution of businesses around the subway. The impact of subway accessibility on commercial facilities varies by station infrastructure and urban area. The findings demonstrate how transit infrastructure development can catalyze sustainable urban form evolution by optimizing spatial resource allocation and fostering transportation–commerce synergy. It provides empirical support for applying the theory of transit-oriented development (TOD) in the urban planning of western developing regions. The research not only fills a research gap concerning the commercial space differentiation law of metro systems in megacities in arid areas but also provides a scientific decision-making basis for optimizing the spatial resource allocation of stations and realizing the synergistic development of transportation and commerce in the node cities along the “Belt and Road”. Urban sprawl and excessive reliance on motorization have led to many urban problems. The balance of supply and demand in the real estate market, as well as price fluctuations, also face many challenges. Urban rail transit not only alleviates traffic congestion and air pollution, but also significantly reduces residents’ commuting time, broadens urban accessibility, and reshapes the decision-making basis for residents when choosing residential locations. This study takes the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, 11th, and 13th metro lines that have been opened in Qingdao City as examples. It selects 12,924 residential samples within a 2 km radius along the rail transit lines. By using GIS spatial analysis tools and the multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model, it analyzes the spatial differentiation characteristics of housing prices along the rail transit lines and the reasons and mechanisms behind them. The empirical results show that housing prices decrease to varying degrees with the increase in the distance from the rail transit. For every additional 1 km from the rail transit station, the housing price increases by 0.246%. Through model comparison, it was found that MGWR has a better fitting degree than the traditional ordinary least squares method (OLS) and the previous geographically weighted regression model (GWR), and reveals the spatial heterogeneity of the influence of urban rail transit on housing prices. Different indicator elements have different effects on housing prices along these lines. The urban rail transit factor in the location characteristics has a positive impact on housing prices, and has a significant negative correlation in some areas. The significant influence range of the distance to the nearest metro station on housing prices is concentrated within a radius of 373 m, and the effect decays beyond this range. The total floors, building area, green coverage rate, property management fee, and the distance to hospitals and parks in the neighborhood and structural characteristics have spatial heterogeneity. Analyzing the areas affected by the urban rail transit factor, it was found that the double location superposition effect, the networked transportation system, and the agglomeration of urban functional axes are important reasons for the significant phenomena in some local areas. This research provides a scientific basis for optimizing the sustainable development of rail transit in Qingdao and formulating differentiated housing policies. Meanwhile, it expands the application of the MGWR model in sustainable urban spatial governance and has practical significance for other cities to achieve sustainable urban development. Full article

Numerous studies address the estimation of energy consumption at intermodal terminals, with a primary focus on existing facilities. However, a significant research gap lies in the lack of reliable methods and tools for the ex ante estimation of energy consumption in transshipment systems. Such tools are essential for assessing the energy demand and intensity of intermodal terminals during the design phase. This gap presents a challenge for intermodal terminal designers, power grid operators, and other stakeholders, particularly in an era of growing energy needs. The authors of this paper identified this issue in the context of a real business case while planning potential intermodal terminal locations along new railway lines. The need became apparent when power grid designers requested energy consumption forecasts for the proposed terminals, highlighting the necessity to formulate and mathematically solve this problem. To address this challenge, a three-stage model was developed based on a pre-designed intermodal terminal. Stage I focused on establishing the fundamental assumptions for intermodal terminal operations. Key parameters influencing energy intensity were identified, such as the size of the transshipment yard, the types of loading operations, the number of containers handled, and the selection of handling equipment. These parameters formed the foundation for further analysis and modeling. Stage II focused on determining the optimal number of machines required to handle a given throughput. This included determining the specific parameters of the equipment, such as speed, span, and efficiency coefficients, as well as ensuring compliance with installation constraints dictated by the terminal layout. Stage III focused on estimating the energy consumption of both individual handling cycles and the total consumption of all handling equipment installed at the terminal. This required obtaining detailed information about the operational parameters of the handling equipment, which directly influence energy consumption. Using these parameters and the equations outlined in Stage III, the energy consumption for a single loading cycle was calculated for each type of handling equipment. Based on the total number of loading operations and model constraints, the total energy consumption of the terminal was estimated for various workload scenarios. In this phase of the study, numerous test calculations were performed. The analysis of testing parameters and the specified terminal layout revealed that energy consumption per cycle varies by equipment type: rail-mounted gantry cranes consume between 5.23 and 8.62 kWh, rubber-tired gantry cranes consume between 3.86 and 7.5 kWh, and automated guided vehicles consume approximately 0.8 kWh per cycle. All handling equipment, based on the adopted assumptions, will consume between 2200 and 13,470 kWh per day. Based on the testing results, a methodology was developed to aid intermodal terminal designers in estimating energy consumption based on variations in input parameters. The results closely align with those reported in the global literature, demonstrating that the methodology proposed in this article provides an accurate approach for estimating energy consumption at intermodal terminals. This method is also suited for use in ex ante cost–benefit analysis. A sensitivity analysis revealed the key variables and parameters that have the greatest impact on unit energy consumption per handling cycle. These included the transshipment yard’s dimensions, the mass of the equipment and cargo, and the nominal specifications of machinery engines. This research is significant for present-day economies heavily reliant on electricity, particularly during the energy transition phase, where efficient management of energy resources and infrastructure is essential. In the case of Poland, where this analysis was conducted, the energy transition involves not only switching handling equipment from combustion to electric power but, more importantly, decarbonizing the energy system. This study is the first to provide a methodology fully based on the design parameters of a planned intermodal terminal, validated with empirical data, enabling the calculation of future energy consumption directly from terminal technical designs. It also fills a critical research gap by enabling ex ante comparisons of energy intensity across transport chains, an area previously constrained by the lack of reliable tools for estimating energy consumption within transshipment terminals. As a novel form of railway transportation, maglev transportation has the advantages of a better curve negotiation ability and grade ability and lower noise and vibration than traditional urban wheel–rail transportation. Thus, it is suitable for use in urban public transportation. However, the levitation of the widely utilized electromagnet suspension (EMS) system relies on continuously active suspension force adjustment, which gives it vehicle–track-coupled vibration characteristics different to those of the traditional wheel–track transportation system. Despite many research studies focusing on maglev vehicle–track coupling vibration, the environmental vibration influences associated with the running of maglev trains are still unclear. When the vibration propagates to the surroundings beyond certain thresholds, it may lead to various vibration serviceability problems. Practical test results on the environmental vibration induced by maglev transportation are still not enough to generate convincing vibration propagation and attenuation laws. In this research, a series of in situ tests were carried out around the Shanghai maglev line; the results show that the viaduct bridge is helpful in reducing environmental vibration, and an empirical formula was proposed to predict the effect of viaduct column height. Due to the ground wave superposition, a vibration-amplifying zone was also found about 10 m away from the maglev line, in which the vibration magnitude was strong enough to be perceived by the surrounding occupants. The article presents a solution to the problem of limited accuracy of dynamic measurements performed with GNSS receivers. The proposed measurement method is a response to the needs related to the assessment of the measurement uncertainty of the position of the track axis of the rail transport line. However, the problem of reducing the measurement uncertainty is universal for many different situations where high accuracy of positioning of objects is required, especially in motion. The article proposes a new method to determine object’s location using geometric constraints of a number of GNSS receivers arranged in symmetric configuration. The proposed method has been verified by comparing signals recorded by up to five GNSS receivers during stationary and dynamic measurements. The dynamic measurement was made on a tram track within the framework of a cycle of studies upon effective and efficient methods to catalogue and diagnose tracks. A detailed analysis of the results obtained with the quasi-multiple measurement method confirms remarkable reduction in their uncertainty. Their synthesis shows the usability of this method in dynamic conditions. The proposed method is expected to find application in measurements requiring high accuracy, and in case of deterioration of the signal quality from satellites by one or more of GNSS receivers due to the appearance of natural obstacles. It is currently necessary to solve several bottlenecks in railway infrastructure. This is important because it is needed to improve railway infrastructure to be faster, safer and of high quality. Rail crossings on railway lines are also a significant bottleneck. There are still many rail crossings and a high number of accidents in many countries of the European Union. The issue of rail crossings must be addressed because many rail crossings reduce the flow of road and railway traffic. However, it is about the safety of transportation, as several serious and fatal traffic accidents have happened at rail crossings. Many times, the perspective ratios of the rail crossings are a significant problem and the main cause of traffic accidents. Therefore, it is important to propose a certain methodological procedure for the assessment of the perspective ratios in rail crossings. The main contribution goal is to briefly describe the development of the rail crossings number according to security devices and analyze the factors influencing the rail crossing potential and restrictive elements factors of the rail crossings as a matter of priority. Great emphasis is placed on the perspective ratios as a key safety factor. The heuristic procedure of the perspective ratios determination is presented within the proposals. Subsequently, there are analyzed the perspective ratios at the selected rail crossing with the light protection device and to assess whether these ratios are safe for the given crossing in the event of the light protection device failure. The rail crossing in the Czech Republic has been selected as a representative on railway line no. 196 from České Budějovice to Horní Dvořiště in the empirical part of the research. The rail crossing has been analyzed in terms of its characteristics and parameters and has been assessed as complying with legal regulations. Full article

The opening of the high-speed rail (HSR) resulted in significant changes in the transportation network of Korea. The new HSR construction was expected to become a new engine of local economic growth. However, there was a controversy regarding whether the connection between regions intensifies the concentration of socio-economic activities in the metropolis (straw effect) or contributes to the balance of regional development (sprawl effect). More increasing attention had been devoted to studying the “straw effects” caused by the newly built HSR networks on interregional social-economic activities. Despite considerable research on the benefit achieved from HSR construction, little has focused on the negative externalities resulting from it. This paper examined the potential “straw effects” of two new HSR lines through constructing the indicator of interregional dependency that measured one city’s level of dependency on another one. In order to exclude the interference of lurking variables, five metropolitan cities were selected as case studies. The empirical results, based on a panel data model, revealed that the larger the economic scale of the target city, the lower the level of dependency on other cities, and there existed a “straw effect” on HSR development in terms of Seoul.
