Scanning When Passing: A Reliable and Valid Standardized Soccer Test

Background/Objectives: In soccer, scanning before receiving the ball helps players better perceive and interpret their surroundings, enabling faster and more effective passes. Despite its importance, no standardized tests currently incorporate scanning actions into assessments of passing abilities. In this study, we test the reliability and validity of a battery of passing tests that assess a player’s ability to control and pass the ball while also scanning for the appropriate target. Methods: We designed three passing tests that reflect different scanning demands that are routinely placed upon players during matches. Using players from the first and reserve teams of two professional clubs in Ghana (Club A, first-team n = 11, reserve-team n = 10; Club B, first-team n = 16, reserve-team n = 17), we: (i) tested the repeatability of each passing test (intraclass correlations), (ii) assessed whether the tests could distinguish between first and reserve team players (linear mixed-effects model), and (iii) examined whether players who were better in the passing tests had higher performances in 3v1 Rondo possession games (linear models). Results: All passing tests were significantly repeatable (ICCs = 0.77–0.85). Performance was highest in the 120-degree test (30.11 ± 7.22 passes/min), where scanning was not required, and was lowest in the 360-degree test (25.55 ± 5.94 passes/min), where players needed to constantly scan behind them. When players were scanning through an arc of 180 degrees, their average performance was 27.41 ± 6.14 passes/min. Overall passing performance significantly distinguished first from reserve team players (β = −1.47, t (51) = −4.32, p < 0.001)) and was positively associated with 3v1 Rondo possession performance (R2 = 0.51, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results show that these passing tests are reliable, distinguish players across competitive levels, and correlate with performance in possession games. These tests offer a simple, ecologically valid way to assess scanning and passing abilities for elite players. Full article

This study investigated the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in elite youth soccer players using a novel multidomain correlational mapping approach. A four-week HIIT intervention was applied in a randomized controlled design, with physiological, cognitive, and neuromuscular data collected through laboratory, field-based, and biochemical tests. Metrics such as VO2max, BDNF levels, lactate dynamics, and cognitive load were analyzed across time points and groups. HIIT elicited statistically significant improvements in aerobic capacity, buffering efficiency, and perceptual-cognitive function, with a notable emergence of cross-domain associations. Unlike the control group, HIIT participants showed strengthened correlations between metabolic, cognitive, and neuromuscular indices, such as lactate slope with exertion perception and BDNF response with cardiac recovery. Hierarchical clustering further revealed tightly integrated multidomain clusters in the HIIT group, absent in the controls, suggesting a reorganization of physiological networks. These findings support the concept that HIIT not only improves discrete capacities but fosters systemic adaptation through enhanced inter-domain coordination. These results align with emerging frameworks in network physiology and highlight the potential for using correlation structures as biomarkers of holistic training adaptation. This multidimensional perspective offers new insights into how targeted training reshapes performance-related systems and may inform individualized athletic programming. Full article

Elite soccer places significant neuromuscular and metabolic stress on athletes, leading to elevated production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), particularly in skeletal muscle, where intense contractile activity and increased oxygen flux drive oxidative processes. These reactive species play a dual role in skeletal muscle, supporting adaptive signaling at controlled levels while causing oxidative damage when poorly regulated. This paper presents an integrated synthesis of current knowledge on redox biology in elite soccer players, focusing on the origins and regulation of RONS, the functions of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, and how both RONS and antioxidant responses influence muscle performance, fatigue, recovery, and long-term physiological adaptation. Drawing on studies conducted between 2000 and 2025, the discussion underscores the seasonal fluctuations in oxidative stress, individual variability in redox responses, and the potential adverse effects of unsystematic antioxidant supplementation. The analysis also emphasizes the value of using biomarker-guided, periodized antioxidant interventions tailored to training demands. Future directions include longitudinal tracking and the use of AI-assisted monitoring to enable personalized strategies for maintaining redox balance and optimizing performance in elite sport. Background/Objectives: Power indices may provide valuable information for performance and injury prevention in soccer players, so increasing the knowledge about them seems essential. Therefore, this study aimed to establish limb-specific normative values for flywheel-derived power indices in professional soccer players, while accounting for limb performance or ability, to explore the relationships between power indices across variables and to compare the power outcomes related to these indices between injured and non-injured players within four months post-assessment. Methods: Twenty-two male professional soccer players (age: 26.6 ± 4.6 years; competitive level: Belgian second division) were recruited from a single elite-tier club to participate in this cross-sectional diagnostic study. Participants underwent a standardized assessment protocol, executed in a rotational inertial device, comprising six unilateral exercises focused on the lower limbs: hip-dominant quadriceps (Qhip), knee-dominant quadriceps (Qknee), hip-dominant hamstrings (Hhip), knee-dominant hamstrings (Hknee), adductor (Add), and abductor (Abd). The testing session incorporated a randomized, counterbalanced design, with each exercise comprising two sets of eight maximal concentric–eccentric repetitions per limb. Leg dominance was operationally defined as the self-reported preferred limb for ball-striking tasks. Power indices were calculated from these exercises. Results: No significant differences in flywheel-derived power indices were found between limbs or between injured and non-injured players. However, significant correlations between indices were found in all power variables, with the Qhip:Qknee and Hhip:Hknee concentric ratios emerging as the most clinically actionable biomarkers for rapid screening. Conclusions: These results suggest the necessity of including more variables for injury prediction. Moreover, power indices could be considered based on the classification of limbs as “strong” or “weak”. Full article

This study aimed to examine whether managerial changes and their training methodology influence the physical attributes of soccer players and determine if these changes significantly impact the overall physical performance of the team. Twenty-seven male elite-level football players competing in the Eastern Mediterranean region (age: 28.12 ± 5.5 years, height: 179.3 ± 6.25 cm, body mass: 75.8 ± 6.6 kg) participated in this study. To analyze the impact of managerial changes on elite football players’ physical performance, this study evaluated and compared physical attributes during weekly microcycles and official games across three different coaching regimes over an entire season. Data were collected using a 10 Hz GPS tracking technology and included the following external load (EL) parameters: total distance, high metabolic load distance, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. A one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was utilized to assess differences in physical performance across the three coaching methods. Significant differences were evident in high metabolic load distance during games [F(2,27) = 7.59, p < 0.05]. High-speed running distance also varied significantly across the three coaching regimes, both during training sessions [F(2,27) = 5.89, p < 0.05] and games [F(2,27) = 4.31, p < 0.05]. Furthermore, sprint distance showed significant differences during training [F(2,27) = 4.62, p < 0.05] and games [F(2,27) = 3.37, p < 0.05]. The findings of this study suggest that managerial changes can have a significant effect on the physical performance of soccer players. The results highlight the importance of aligning coaching strategies with physical conditioning techniques for optimizing performance. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with managerial changes in professional soccer. Nevertheless, a limitation in this study is that all metrics of EL were interpreted as absolute values rather than relative-based threshold values, which may affect the interpretation of the players’ physical capacities. Modern elite football is becoming increasingly physically demanding, often requiring training and matches to be played at night. This schedule may disrupt circadian rhythms and melatonin secretion, thereby impairing sleep and recovery. This study investigated the effects of training time on melatonin secretion, circadian phase markers, and sleep parameters in elite youth soccer players. Forty male players (aged 16–18 years) from an elite Spanish youth football club were studied. Two groups followed the same training program but trained either in the morning (MT) or in the evening (ET). Salivary melatonin was measured at six time points to determine the mean levels, dim light melatonin onset (DLMO), amplitude, and acrophase. Chronotype, sleep quality (PSQI), and daytime sleepiness (ESS) were assessed using validated questionnaires. Dietary intake and anthropometric variables were also recorded. The MT group had higher mean melatonin levels (p = 0.026) and earlier DLMO (p = 0.023) compared to the ET group. Sleep quality was significantly better in the MT group (p < 0.001), despite shorter sleep duration (p = 0.014). No major differences in diet or anthropometry were observed. The chronotype had a secondary effect on the circadian markers. Evening training is associated with alterations in melatonin rhythms and reduced sleep quality, possibly due to light-induced chronodisruption. These findings highlight the importance of training timing as a modifiable factor in the chronobiology and recovery of athletes. Incorporating circadian principles into training schedules may optimize resting time and thus performance and long-term health in athletes. Full article

Assessment of Injury Risk in Professional Soccer Players: A Long-Term Study

The aim of this study was to record and interpret external load parameters in professional soccer players in competitive microcycles with one or two matches per week, while investigating the interaction between training load and non-contact musculoskeletal injuries during training and matches. Musculoskeletal injuries in athletes are closely associated with workload fluctuations, particularly the acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR) over preceding weeks. This study analyzed the physical workload of 40 high-level soccer players competing in the Greek championship across two seasons, encompassing 50 competitive microcycles, 60 official matches, and 300 training sessions. GPS-based assessments recorded total distance (TD), running speeds (15–20 km/h, 20–25 km/h, 25–30 km/h), accelerations (>2.5 m/s2), and decelerations (>2.5 m/s2). An independent sample t-test was conducted to compare injured and uninjured athletes, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results showed that 20 injured athletes frequently exceeded the ACWR threshold (>1.3) compared to uninjured players. Analysis of the four weeks preceding the injury revealed that increased workload in high-intensity categories significantly contributed to non-contact injuries. Specifically, high running speeds of 15–20 km/h (p = 0.015), 20–25 km/h (p = 0.045) and >25 km/h (p = 0.008), as well as accelerations (p = 0.010), were linked to a higher risk of injury. The three-week ACWR model indicated statistically significant differences in the ACWR index for total distance (p = 0.033), runs at 15–20 km/h (p = 0.007), >25 km/h (p = 0.004), accelerations (p = 0.009), and decelerations (p = 0.013). In the two-week model, significant differences were found in runs at 15–20 km/h (p = 0.008) and >25 km/h (p = 0.012). In the final week, significant differences were observed in runs at 15–20 km/h (p = 0.015), >25 km/h (p = 0.016), and accelerations (p = 0.049). Additionally, running speeds of 25–30 km/h (p values between 0.004 and 0.016) played a key role in injury risk when limits were exceeded across all weekly blocks. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring ACWR to prevent injuries, particularly by managing high-intensity workload fluctuations in elite athletes. Full article

Youth soccer academies are dominated by the older players in each annual age cohort because they are judged to be better at the time of selection. Failing to identify talented players because they are simply younger in their cohort is a problem of both discrimination and poor practice. One potential method for addressing such biases is to develop and use age- and size-corrected assessments of individual players using traits closely associated with match success. In this study, we quantified the relationship between age and size with individual passing and control performance in six different tests for 170 players between 10 and 20 years old from a Tier 1 academy in Brazil. Passing tests were significantly repeatable and performance varied among tests (df = 5; F = 432.2; p < 0.001). Overall passing performance (PCP1)—based on all tests—was significantly positively associated with age (R2 = 0.42, t = 10.67; p < 0.001), height (R2 = 0.19, t = 6.13; p < 0.001) and mass (R2 = 0.23, t = 6.90, p < 0.001). In addition, tests of passing and control could discriminate among groups of differing playing levels (test 1: F(2,116) = 55.2, p < 0.001; test 3: F(2,116) = 12.0, p < 0.001). Normative algorithms from this study can be used to compare athletes during selection trials and against an elite group, after taking age and size into account, and using such algorithms could vastly reduce the insipid age-biases that plague youth football. Background: Extensive data exists on external load during training and competition, but a significant gap remains in understanding internal physiological load, particularly in protocols conducted in ecological settings. Given the scarcity of studies on the on-field cardiorespiratory profiles of national-level athletes, especially in Argentine soccer, this study aimed to identify the on-field cardiorespiratory fitness profile of ten highly trained youth field soccer players (13.6 ± 1.3 years old) from both the first league of the Argentine Football Association and members of the national team in their age group category in the current year. Methods: Each athlete performed an on-field cardiorespiratory exercise test (20-m Shuttle Run Test, 20-m SRT) with the COSMED K5 wearable metabolic system (COSMED, Rome, Italy) in dynamic micro-mixing chamber mode. The 20-m Shuttle Run Test involves running back and forth between two lines set 20 m apart, following the pace set by an audio signal. The test starts at a running velocity of 8.5 km·h−1 and increases by 0.5 km·h−1 each min. Results: Mean velocity at maximal oxygen uptake (vV˙O2max) was 12.3 ± 0.7 km·h−1. The maximal oxygen uptake (V˙O2max) on-field was 67.1 ± 5.3 mL·kg−1·min−1. The V˙O2 at the first and second ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) were identified at 67.0 ± 3.0% V˙O2max (44.9 ± 3.3 mL·kg−1·min−1) and 84.7 ± 3.7% V˙O2max (56.8 ± 3.8 mL·kg−1·min−1), respectively. Conclusions: This is a scarce on-field gas exchange assessment, conducted in an ecological context using a portable analyzer with highly trained national-level youth soccer players from the Argentine youth national team, which underlines their cardiorespiratory fitness, showcases their high-performance potential, offers valuable insights into a selective group of players, and provides a reference for larger-scale research on elite youth soccer and the long-term development of aerobic power and capacity. This study explores the predictive factors influencing sport coaches’ perceived performance levels following an 18-month mentor-based education program. The study employed a quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test control group design to assess changes in perceived coach performance over time. The experimental group participated in six group gatherings and at least 15 individual mentoring sessions over 18 months, while the control group received no intervention. Participants were recruited from a non-formal coach education program run by the Norwegian Olympic Sports Center (NOSC), requiring recommendations from their respective sport federations. Of the 159 coaches who applied, 73 were selected for the program and invited to participate, along with 29 additional coaches from specialized high schools for elite sports, forming a total sample of 98 coaches (69 in the experimental group, 29 in the control group) at pre-test. The sample consisted of 61 males (62%) and 37 females (38%), aged 26 to 71 years (M = 38.3, SD = 8.3), representing over 20 sports, with handball (15.3%), cross-country skiing (10.2%), soccer (7.1%), and track and field (7.1%) being the most common. Data collection included an online questionnaire measuring perceived coach performance, coaching hours, age, and dimensions of the coach–athlete working alliance (task, bond, and goal development). After 18 months, 75 coaches completed the study, yielding a response rate of 73.5%. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that coaches’ ages, weekly coaching hours, baseline perceived performance, and task development within the coach–athlete working alliance positively predicted their performance perception post-test. Participation in the mentor-based program also had a significant positive effect. However, neither bond nor goal development in the working alliance predicted performance perception. These findings underscore the importance of mentoring, structured self-reflection, and task-focused coaching strategies in enhancing coaching effectiveness. The results have implications for coach education programs seeking to foster professional growth and performance development. Full article

Background/Objectives: The characteristics of open- and closed-skill sports can have a significant impact on the development of both motor and cognitive functions during late childhood and early adolescence. This study examined the impact of artistic gymnastics and soccer practice on physical/coordinative skills and executive functions in preadolescent female athletes. Methods: Gross-motor coordination (Körperkoordinations Test für Kinder battery), explosive lower limb power (countermovement jump) and executive functions (Flanker/Reverse Flanker; Digit Span) of ninety-eight soccer and gymnastics athletes (10.9 ± 0.6 years of age) were tested at the beginning and the end of a sports season. A t-test and a mixed linear method were used to detect differences between sports and expertise levels (amateur vs. elite) at baseline and over time, respectively. Results: Gymnasts scored higher in physical tests compared to soccer athletes, who obtained better scores in the Digit Span test. Elite gymnasts showed higher physical skills compared to both amateur gymnasts and elite soccer players, with executive function levels comparable to those of amateur gymnasts. Similarly, elite soccer players showed higher reaction time in executive functions tests compared to both elite gymnasts and amateur soccer athletes, with similar physical skills as amateur soccer players. Amateur gymnastics and soccer athletes showed similar levels of physical and cognitive skills. All groups improved their physical and executive function skills over time, with relevant effects of expertise level on physical tasks. Conclusions: Results revealed the impact of sport type and athletes’ level of expertise in influencing both their motor and cognitive development. Full article

Landing from a jump has been identified as a common situation of increased risk in sport and the tuck jump assessment (TJA) has been proposed for a comprehensive examination of landing mechanics. However, group-specific data on female athletes are limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the movement mechanics during a TJA in Spanish female soccer players and to explore potential differences between players of different performance levels. A total of 96 (elite and non-elite) female soccer players performed a TJA, and a rater visually graded the technique using the modified 10-item scoring system (0, 1, or 2 for “none”, “small”, or “large” flaws). Descriptive statistics were calculated. The association between the flaws and performance groups was assessed using the chi-square test. Almost 90% of all players involved were categorized with small and large flaws for the item “Lower extremity valgus at landing”. The proportion of players categorized with technical flaws was also high for “Foot contact timing not equal” (85%) and “Does not land in same footprint” (82%). Differences between elite and non-elite players were only found for “Foot placement not parallel” and “Excessive landing contact noise” (p < 0.008). These results reveal the importance of implementing training programs to reduce jumping and landing deficits in female soccer players, independently of the players’ level of performance. Full article

Beach soccer has gained increasing interest for study in the sports sciences. In this sense, the analysis of activity profiles is important for training design and load individualization. Therefore, the aims of this study were to identify the most important variables to assess the activity profile and to compare them according to the playing position and game periods in international beach soccer matches. A total of 19 matches of the Spanish national beach soccer team were analyzed during their participation in different international competitions during the 2021–2022 season. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to objectively select the external load variables that best explain the data. Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin values of 0.705 and Bartlett’s Sphericity (p < 0.01) were obtained. Kruskal–Wallis and Friedman tests was performed for playing positions and game period comparisons, respectively. The PCA showed seven components that grouped a total of 20 variables, explaining 66% of the total variance. Only PC1 and PC2 explained more than 15% (23% and 17%, respectively). Differences were found between playing positions (H > 22.73; p < 0.01) and between game periods (X2 > 16.46; p < 0.01). A significant decrease was found throughout the game, with the highest demands in period 1 and the lowest in period 3. The highest workloads were performed by wingers and the lowest by goalkeepers. The differences between positions and game periods were found in the following: Total Distance (m/min), HIBD (m/min), High Acc (m/s), High Dec (m/s), Acc 1–2 m/s2 (m), Acc 2–3 m/s2 (m), Imp 4–5G (n), Imp 5–6G (n), Sprint (n), and Dec 10–6 m/s2 (m) (p < 0.01). In conclusion, physical and tactical demands faced by elite-level beach soccer players will be influenced by playing positions and game periods. Coaches needs to develop position-specific training programs and optimize substitution strategies for enhancing overall team performance. Full article

This study sought to assess how post-game creatine kinase (CK) levels correlate with the number of sprints and the impact of the ACTN3 polymorphism on this response. This research constituted a descriptive/observational, retrospective cross-sectional study. DNA was extracted from blood samples for ACTN3 polymorphism genotyping. CK was measured 48 h after official matches, and the number of sprints (>19 km/h) was tracked using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. The main cohort included 23 professional soccer players from the top tier of the Brazilian Championship. We analyzed 115 GPS + CK data sets. The replication cohort comprised 18 professional soccer players from the First Division of the Championship, had the same methodology applied, and featured a total of 90 GPS (sprints > 25.2 km/h) + CK data sets. For the main cohort, a significant positive correlation was seen between the number of sprints and the CK levels (p = 0.009). Athletes with the ACTN3 RR genotype had higher CK levels as more sprints were performed during the match (p = 0.017). However, the relationship was not found for X allele carriers (p > 0.05). For the replication cohort, there was a near-significant correlation between CK levels and the number of sprints (p = 0.05), and RR individuals showed a significant association (p = 0.01), whereas X allele carriers did not (p = 0.06). A greater number of sprints during matches is linked to higher CK levels, primarily among players with the ACTN3 RR genotype, which is potentially due to an increased presence of type II muscle fibers. These findings were replicated for both cohorts of elite Brazilian soccer players, emphasizing the importance of genetic factors in injury prevention. Full article

Background: There is a lack of evidence regarding the impact of time loss, match exposure, and age at injury on career progression in elite football. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify injury characteristics and their influence on career progression in a German youth academy. Methods: During the 2012/2013 season, a prospective cohort study reported 107 time-loss injuries among 130 young athletes from an elite German soccer academy. Individual career progression was analyzed using 10-year data. Results: Injuries and time loss were not associated with career progression (p > 0.05) in the overall cohort. In the U17 and U19 groups, 24% were able to reach the professional level, with injuries significantly decreasing this probability (p = 0.002). Injuries lasting more than 28 days had a negative impact on career progression compared to minor injuries (30% vs. 10%; p = 0.02). Conclusions: Not only the characteristics of injuries, but also their impact on career development, vary with age. In the U17 and U19 age groups, serious injuries resulting in more than 28 days of absence have a negative impact on career progression. It is important to be aware of these effects in order to focus on the prevention of long-term injuries to ensure the optimal development of young athletes. Full article
