Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are widely applied to reduce particle concentrations. However, the performance of ESPs is impaired in the nanosized diameter range due to the difficulty in electrically charging these particles. The present work evaluated the inclusion of a wire screen, perpendicular to the airflow, as an additional collecting electrode of a single-stage wire-plate ESP containing two collecting plates and a single discharge wire. ESP performance was evaluated in terms of voltage, air velocity and electrode positioning in relation to the beginning of the collecting plate (inlet spacings of 1.5, 10 and 23 cm). When compared to theoretical prediction, the penetration results presented a decay for larger particles not predicted by the diffusion battery model. It was observed that the inclusion of the wire screen increased the removal of ultrafine particles and that the overall collection efficiencies increased up to 70% in the operating conditions evaluated. Moreover, the central positioning of the electrodes (inlet spacing of 10 cm) achieved the highest collection efficiencies at high voltages, but the final positioning (inlet spacing of 23 cm) presented a better performance at higher air velocities. Therefore, the wire screen can be an alternative to enhance nanoparticle collection. Full article

For the precise description of gas physical processes in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, an advanced and robust numerical framework for the simulation of transient particle densities in the course of corona discharges is developed in this work. The aim is the scalable and consistent modeling of the space charge density under realistic conditions. The core component of the framework is a discontinuous Galerkin method that ensures the conservative properties of the underlying hyperbolic problem. The space charge density at the electrode surface is imposed as a dynamic boundary condition via Lagrange multipliers. To increase the numerical stability and convergence rate, a homotopy approach is also integrated. For the experimental validation, a measurement concept was realised that uses a subtraction method to specifically remove the displacement current component in the signal and thus enables an isolated recording of the transient ion current with superimposed voltage stresses. The experimental results on a small scale agree with the numerical predictions and prove the quality of the model. On this basis, the framework is transferred to hybrid HVDC overhead line systems with a bipolar design. In the event of a fault, significant transient space charge densities can be seen there, especially when superimposed with new types of voltage waveforms. The framework thus provides a reliable contribution to insulation coordination in complex HVDC systems and enables the realistic analysis of electrohydrodynamic coupling effects on an industrial scale. Environmental sustainability and responsible resource utilization are critical global challenges. In this work, we present a sustainable and circular-economy-based approach for synthesizing CuFe2O4 nanoparticles by directly utilizing copper oxide minerals sourced from Chilean mining operations. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) was extracted from these minerals through acid leaching and used as a precursor for nanoparticle synthesis via both chemical co-precipitation and microwave-assisted methods. The influence of different precipitating agents—NaOH, Na2CO3, and NaF—was systematically evaluated. XRD and FESEM analyses revealed that NaOH produced the most phase-pure and well-dispersed nanoparticles, while NaF resulted in secondary phase formation. The microwave-assisted method further improved particle uniformity and reduced agglomeration due to rapid and homogeneous heating. Electrochemical characterization was conducted to assess the suitability of the synthesized CuFe2O4 for supercapacitor applications. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) measurements confirmed pseudocapacitive behavior, with a specific capacitance of up to 1000 F/g at 2 A/g. These findings highlight the potential of CuFe2O4 as a low-cost, high-performance electrode material for energy storage. This study underscores the feasibility of converting primary mined minerals into functional nanomaterials while promoting sustainable mineral valorization. The approach can be extended to other critical metals and mineral residues, including tailings, supporting the broader goals of a circular economy and environmental remediation. Full article

This study presents the first investigation into the application of ultrasonic vibration-assisted electrical discharge machining (UV-EDM) using graphite electrodes for external cylindrical surface machining—an essential surface in the production of tablet punches and sheet metal-forming dies. A custom ultrasonic horn was designed and fabricated using 90CrSi material to operate effectively at a resonant frequency of 20 kHz, ensuring stable vibration transmission throughout the machining process. A Box–Behnken experimental design was employed to explore the effects of five process parameters—vibration amplitude (A), pulse-on time (Ton), pulse-off time (Toff), discharge current (Ip), and servo voltage (SV)—on two key performance indicators: material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra). The optimization process was conducted in two stages: single-objective analysis to maximize MRR while ensuring Ra < 4 µm, followed by a hybrid multi-objective approach combining NSGA-II and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The optimal solution achieved a high MRR of 9.28 g/h while maintaining Ra below the critical surface finish threshold, thus meeting the practical requirements for punch surface quality. The findings confirm the effectiveness of the proposed horn design and hybrid optimization strategy, offering a new direction for enhancing productivity and surface integrity in cylindrical EDM applications using graphite electrodes. To develop high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, in this paper, a heterostructured composite material of cerium sulfide and zinc sulfide quantum dots (CeS2/ZnS QD) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that ZnS QD nanoparticles were uniformly composited with CeS2, effectively increasing the active sites surface area and shortening the ion diffusion path. Electrochemical tests show that the specific capacitance of this composite material reaches 2054 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g (specific capacity of about 256 mAh/g), significantly outperforming the specific capacitance of pure CeS2 787 F/g at 1 A/g (specific capacity 98 mAh/g). The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with CeS2/ZnS QD and activated carbon (AC) retained 84% capacitance after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Benefited from the synergistic effect between CeS2 and ZnS QDs, the significantly improved electrochemical performance of the composite material suggests a promising strategy for designing rare-earth and QD-based advanced energy storage materials. In this study, we successfully synthesized olivine-type FePO4 via an in situ oxidation method and further developed two composite cathode materials (o-FePO4-1/GR-1 and o-FePO4-1/GR-2) by incorporating graphene. The composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), revealing a three-dimensional porous layered structure with an enhanced surface area and strong interaction between FePO4 nanoparticles and graphene layers. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the composite electrodes exhibited significantly improved performance compared to pristine FePO4, with discharge capacities of 147 mAh g−1 at 1C and 163 mAh g−1 at 0.1C for o-FePO4-1/GR-2, approaching the level of LiFePO4. The incorporation of graphene effectively enhanced the electrochemical reaction kinetics, highlighting the innovation of our method in developing high-performance cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In our study, supercapacitor electrodes were prepared by depositing electroless Ni-B coating on copper plates, followed by nitric acid etching. The composition and the micro- and phase structure of the coatings were investigated by ICP-OES, PFIB-SEM, and XRD techniques. The original pebble-like structure of the coating consists of 0.8–10 µm particles, with an X-ray amorphous phase structure. The surface morphology and porosity of the coating can be tuned simply by changing the etching time. The supercapacitive performance of the electrodes was evaluated by means of cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The capacitance of the coating was found to vary on the etching time according to a maximum function, allowing for the determination of an optimal duration to obtain a specific capacitance of 157 mF/cm2 (at 0.5 A/g). An excellent charge storage retention of 178% was found after 5000 CV cycles at a scan rate of 50 mV/s owing to the evolved electrochemically active network on the surface of the electrode, indicating a long-term stable and reliable electrode. Al/AgO seawater-activated batteries with high specific energy and high specific power are widely used at present. The AgO electrode determines the performance of the battery, with its active material utilization rate having a significant impact on the specific capacity, energy density and discharge capacity of the battery. Therefore, this study briefly introduces the structure and working principle of Al/AgO seawater-activated batteries. Starting from the AgO material itself, common preparation methods for such positive electrode materials—including sintered silver oxide electrodes, pressed silver oxide electrodes and thin-film silver oxide electrodes—are introduced, and the factors influencing their electrochemical performance are analyzed in depth. We elaborate on the relevant research progress regarding AgO electrodes in terms of improving battery performance, detailing the effects of the silver powder’s morphology, porosity, purity, ordered structure, surface treatment and doping modification methods on silver oxide electrodes. Finally, various methods for improving the electrochemical performance of silver oxide electrodes are detailed. Current challenges and possible future research directions are analyzed, and prospects for the future development of high-specific-energy batteries based on AgO electrode materials are discussed. Overall, this review highlights the characteristics of Al/AgO batteries, providing a theoretical basis for the development of high-performance Al/AgO batteries. Full article

Supercapacitors are considered a bridge between batteries and capacitors due to their significant energy density, as well as power density. Herein, we prepared two novel electrodes of Fe0.8Co0.2S and Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO composites and analyzed their supercapacitor performance. The results indicated that Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO, prepared through co-precipitation and annealing, exhibited a higher specific capacitance value and improved electrochemical properties in comparison to Fe0.8Co0.2S due to the synergistic effect of rGO with Fe0.8Co0.2S. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the desired phases of Fe0.8Co0.2S, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) verified the microstructures and desired elements. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) confirmed an enhanced oxidation current from +25 mA to +49 mA at 10 mV/s, while galvanometric charge–discharge (GCD) showed an enhanced discharge time from 78 s to 300 s. As a result, the specific capacitance and energy density were enhanced from 74.3 F/g to 285.7 F/g and 2.84 Wh/kg to 10.9 Wh/kg, respectively. This contributed to a more than 283% increase in specific capacitance, as well as energy density. Overall, Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO shows great potential for small-scale energy storage devices. Full article

The escalating demand for efficient thermal management in lithium-ion batteries necessitates precise characterization of their thermal behavior under diverse operating conditions. This study develops a three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical–thermal coupling model grounded in porous electrode theory and energy conservation principles. The model solves multi-physics equations such as Fick’s law, Ohm’s law, and the Butler–Volmer equation, to resolve coupled electrochemical and thermal dynamics, with temperature-dependent parameters calibrated via the Arrhenius equation. Simulations under varying discharge rates reveal that high-rate discharges exacerbate internal heat accumulation. Low ambient temperatures amplify polarization effects. Forced convection cooling reduces surface temperatures but exacerbates core-to-surface thermal gradients. Structural optimization strategies demonstrate that enhancing through-thickness thermal conductivity reduces temperature differences. These findings underscore the necessity of balancing energy density and thermal management in lithium-ion battery design, proposing actionable insights such as preheating protocols for low-temperature operation, optimized cooling systems for high-rate scenarios, and material-level enhancements for improved thermal uniformity. Lanthanide perovskite materials are promising candidates for supercapacitor applications. In this study, a series of La1−xCaxCrO3 (x = 0–0.2) materials were prepared by sol-gel method, incorporating bivalent ions calcium at A-site. La0.85Ca0.15CrO3 exhibited the lowest charge transfer resistance and highest specific surface area. At 1 A/g, La0.85Ca0.15CrO3 achieved a maximum specific capacitance of 306 F/g, about 2.3 times higher than that of the LaCrO3 (133 F/g). Based on the observed data, a mechanism involving oxygen anion charge storage during the charging-discharging process is proposed. After 5000 long cycle, the coulomb efficiency of the electrode remains above 94%. These results demonstrate that Ca-substituted compounds exhibit significant potential for A-site engineering in supercapacitor applications. Full article

Supercapacitors, with their remarkable attributes such as including a high power density, an extended cycle life, and inherent safety, have emerged as a major research area for electrochemical energy storage. In this paper, phenylenediamine and glyoxal were used as raw material to prepare p-phenylenediamine glyoxal (PGo) with one single step. p-phenylenediamine glyoxal-ferrocene (PGo-Fcx, x = 1, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1) composites were synthesized based on a poly-Schiff base. FTIR and XRD results indicated that ferrocene doping preserves the intrinsic PGo framework while inducing grain refinement, as evidenced by the narrowing of the XRD diffraction peaks. SEM observations further revealed distinct morphological evolution. CV (cyclic voltammetry), EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), and GCD (galvanostatic charge–discharge) were conducted on PGo-Fcx in order to examine its electrochemical performance. The PGo-Fc0.3 in PGo-Fcx electrode material had a specific capacitance of 59.6 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and 36 F/g at a current density of 10 A/g. Notably, even after undergoing 5000 charging–discharging cycles at 10 A/g, the material retained 76.2% of its specific capacitance compared to the initial cycle. Therefore, taking conductive polymers and metal oxide materials for modification can improve the stability and electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. Full article

With the widespread application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), safety performance has become a critical factor limiting the commercialization of large-scale, high-capacity LIBs. The main reason for the safety problem is that the electrolytes of LIBs are extremely flammable. Adding flame retardants to conventional electrolytes is an effective method to improve battery safety. In this paper, trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and trimethyl phosphite (TMPi) were used as research objects, and the flame-retardant test and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the electrolytes configured by them were first carried out. The self-extinguishing time of the electrolyte with 5% TMP and TMPi is significantly reduced, achieving a flame-retardant effect. Secondly, the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4|Li half-cells after adding different volume ratios of TMP and TMPi was studied. Compared with TMPi5, the peak potential difference between the oxidation peak and the reduction peak of the LiFePO4|Li half-cell with TMP5 added is reduced, the battery polarization is reduced, the discharge specific capacity after 300 cycles is large, the capacity retention rate is as high as 99.6%, the discharge specific capacity is larger at different current rates, and the electrode resistance is smaller. TMPi5 causes the discharge-specific capacity to attenuate, which is more obvious at high current rates. LiFePO4|Li half-cells with 5% volume ratio of flame retardant have the best electrochemical performance. Finally, the influence mechanism of the phosphorus valence state on battery safety and electrochemical performance was compared and studied. After 300 cycles, the surface of the LiFePO4 electrode with 5% TMP added had a smoother and more uniform CEI film and higher phosphorus (P) and fluorine (F) content, which was beneficial to the improvement of electrochemical performance. The cross-section of the LiFePO4 electrode showed slight collapse and cracks, which slowed down the attenuation of battery capacity. Full article

The ability to predict capacity retention is critical for ensuring the long-term reliability of supercapacitors in energy storage systems. This study presents a comprehensive machine learning framework that integrates both electrical cycling data and experimentally derived material and structural features to forecast the degradation behavior of commercial supercapacitors. A total of seven supercapacitor samples were tested under various current and voltage conditions, resulting in over 70,000 charge–discharge cycles across three case studies. In addition to electrical measurements, detailed physical and material characterizations were performed, including electrode dimension analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Three machine learning models, Linear Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), were trained using both cycler-only and combined cycler + material features. Results show that incorporating material features consistently improved prediction accuracy across all models. The MLP model exhibited the highest performance, achieving an R2 of 0.976 on the training set and 0.941 on unseen data. Feature importance analysis confirmed that material descriptors such as porosity, thermal stability, and electrode thickness significantly contributed to model performance. This study demonstrates that combining electrical and material data offers a more holistic and physically informed approach to supercapacitor health prediction. The framework developed here provides a practical foundation for accurate and robust lifetime forecasting of commercial energy storage devices, highlighting the critical role of material-level insights in enhancing model generalization and reliability.
