Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. In the aluminum electrolysis production process, the traditional cell control method based on cell voltage and series current can no longer meet the goals of energy conservation, consumption reduction, and digital-intelligent transformation. Therefore, a new digital cell control technology that is centrally dependent on various process parameters has become an urgent demand in the aluminum electrolysis industry. Among them, the real-time online measurement of alumina concentration is one of the key data points for implementing such technology. However, due to the harsh production environment and limitations of current sensor technologies, hardware-based detection of alumina concentration is difficult to achieve. To address this issue, this study proposes a soft-sensing model for alumina concentration based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network optimized by a weighted average algorithm (WAA). The proposed method outperforms BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM, CNN-BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM-Attention, and CNN-BiLSTM-Attention models in terms of predictive accuracy. In comparison to LSTM models optimized using the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), Optuna, Tornado Optimization Algorithm (TOC), and Whale Migration Algorithm (WMA), the WAA-enhanced LSTM model consistently achieves significantly better performance. This superiority is evidenced by lower MAE and RMSE values, along with higher R2 and accuracy scores. The WAA-LSTM model remains stable throughout the training process and achieves the lowest final loss, further confirming the accuracy and superiority of the proposed approach. Full article

This study explores the complex interaction between the Internet of Things (IoT) and the new energy sector and analyzes how their integration can catalyze a transition toward a sustainable low-carbon economy. Through the full-sample and rolling sub-sample methods, we empirically examine the dynamic interrelationship between China’s IoT index (IoT) and the New Energy Index (NEI). Quantitative analysis reveals significant time-varying characteristics and bidirectional causal complexity in the interaction between the IoT and new energy. The IoT has a dual-edged impact on the development of new sources of energy. In the long run, the IoT plays a dominant role in incentivizing new energy, helping to enhance its stability and economic value. However, during stages characterized by technological bottlenecks or resource competition, the high energy consumption of IoT infrastructure may suppress the investment returns of new energy. Simultaneously, new energy has both positive and negative impacts on the IoT. On the one hand, new energy provides low-cost, sustainable power to support the IoT, driving the construction of the IoT ecosystem. On the other hand, it may threaten the continuity of IoT power supply, and the complexity of standardization and regulation in the sector may constrain the development of the IoT. This study provides a fresh perspective on promoting the integration of digital technology and green energy, uncovering nonlinear trade-offs between innovation-driven growth and carbon reduction goals, and offering policy insights for cross-sectoral collaboration to achieve sustainability. The growing consumption of oil and gas resources and the increasing difficulty of extraction have created major challenges for traditional manufacturing and maintenance, particularly in the timely supply of critical components, customized production, and complex structure fabrication. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology, with its high design freedom, precision, and rapid prototyping, provides new approaches to address these issues. However, systematic reviews of related efforts are scarce. This paper reviews the applications and progress of metal and non-metal AM technologies in oil and gas extraction and gathering engineering, focusing on the just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing of failed components, the manufacturing and repair of specialized equipment and tools for oil and gas extraction and gathering, and artificial core and reservoir geological modeling fabrication. AM applications in this field remain exploratory and face challenges with regard to their standards, supply chains, materials, and processes. Future research should emphasize developing materials and processes for extreme conditions, optimizing process parameters, establishing standards and traceability systems, and integrating AM with digital design and reverse engineering to support efficient, safe, and sustainable industry development. This work aims to provide a reference for advancing AM research and engineering applications in the oil and gas sector. Full article

The European Union’s developing rural development plan places digital and precision agriculture at the centre of agricultural modernisation and economic development. This article examines how agricultural practices in rural EU regions are being influenced by smart technology, such as drones, IoT sensors, satellite-based research, and AI-driven platforms, through an analysis of recent data from sources across the European Union. This study applies a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of strategic policy documents and EU databases, to evaluate the ways in which precision agriculture reduces input consumption, increases productivity, reduces labour shortages and rural area depopulation, and improves sustainability. By investing in infrastructure, developing communities for data exchange, and organising training for farmers, European policies such as the Strategic Plans of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the SmartAgriHubs initiative, and the AgData program actively encourage the transition to digital agriculture. Cyprus is analysed as a case study to show how targeted investments and initiatives supported by the EU can help smaller countries, with limited natural resources, to realise the benefits of digital transformation in agriculture. A special focus is placed on how solutions adapted to agro-climatic and socioeconomic conditions can contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, attracting young people to get involved in this field and opening up new economic opportunities. The results of previous research indicate that digital agriculture not only improves productivity but also proves to be a strategic mechanism for attracting and retaining young people in rural areas. Thus, this work additionally contributes to the broader goal of the European Union—the development of smart, inclusive, and sustainable rural areas, in which digital technologies are not only seen as tools for efficiency but also as key means for integrated and long-term rural development. Improving Folic Acid Supplementation Through Electronic Medical Record Interface Modifications—A Retrospective Study

Background: Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis and fetal development, with deficiency linked to anemia, cardiovascular disease and pregnancy complications. The clinical guidelines for women of reproductive age mandate supplementation as a universal preventive treatment regardless of blood folic acid levels; therefore, routine folic acid level testing is not recommended for this population. However, the vast majority of pregnant women do not implement the recommended preventive actions, indicating that new strategies are needed to improve that situation. Objectives: This study examined the impact of modifying the laboratory test-ordering interface in the medical record system, designed to simplify the ordering of folic acid level tests, on testing rates, deficiency detection and supplement consumption among women of reproductive age. Methods: This retrospective cohort analysis compared outcomes reflecting the impact of the modification on 43,952 women aged 18–42 years, assessed over one year pre- and post-integration. Statistical analyses included Chi-squared tests and logistic regression, with adjustments for age and socio-geographic status. Results: Post-intervention, testing rates increased from 14.74% to 17.35% (p < 0.0001), and deficiency detection rose from 6.30% to 7.38% (p < 0.0001). Supplement consumption tripled from 5.45% to 15.98% (p < 0.0001), with 91.37% of post-intervention consumers being new users. Conclusions: Modifying the presentation of tests in the laboratory test-ordering interface within electronic medical records significantly improved testing rates, enhanced deficiency detection and had a meaningful impact on treatment outcomes. These findings underscore the potential of system-level digital interventions to advance preventive care and overall health. Future research should focus on examining scalability, implementation and long-term outcomes across diverse healthcare settings. Full article

Deep learning (DL) has shown great capability in remote sensing and automatic target recognition (ATR). However, huge computational costs and power consumption are challenging the development of current DL methods. Optical neural networks have recently been proposed to provide a new mode to replace artificial neural networks. Here, we develop a residual optronic convolutional neural network (res-OPCNN) for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) recognition tasks. We implement almost all computational operations in optics and significantly decrease the network computational costs. Compared with digital DL methods, res-OPCNN offers ultra-fast speed, low computation complexity, and low power consumption. Experiments on the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) dataset demonstrate the lightweight nature of the optronic method and its feasibility for SAR target recognition. The increasing need for efficient energy consumption monitoring, driven by economic and environmental concerns, has made Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) a cost-effective alternative to traditional measurement methods. Despite its progress since the 1980s, NILM still lacks standardized benchmarks, limiting objective performance comparisons. This study introduces several key contributions: (1) the development of five new converters with 13-digit timestamp support and harmonic inclusion, improving the data collection accuracy by up to 25%; (2) the implementation of an advanced disaggregation software, achieving a 10–15% increase in the F1-score for certain appliances; (3) a detailed analysis of harmonics’ impact on NILM, reducing the Mean Normalized Error in Assigned Power by up to 40%; and (4) the design of open-source measurement hardware to enhance reproducibility. This study also evaluates open hardware platforms and compares five common household appliances using NILM Toolkit metrics. Results demonstrate that open hardware and software foster reproducibility and accelerate innovation in NILM. The proposed approach contributes to a standardized and scalable NILM framework, facilitating real-world applications in energy management and smart grid optimization. Full article

In the evolving digital marketplace, consumer behaviour is increasingly shaped by green marketing strategies, particularly in the context of sustainable consumption. This study aims to examine the mechanisms through which green content marketing and green affiliate marketing influence green variety-seeking shopping behaviours, with particular attention to the role of green shopping motives and the effectiveness of marketing strategies. As traditional retail methods face limitations, digital marketing channels provide new avenues to engage consumers through personalized and dynamic content. Using the Theory–Context–Characteristics–Methodology (TCCM) framework, this research systematically examines the existing literature to identify key theories, contexts, characteristics, and methodologies relevant to variety-seeking behaviours towards green products. The study explores the psychological and behavioural drivers behind shopping choices, offering insights into why consumers exhibit variety-seeking behaviour when purchasing green products. The results indicate that effective green content and affiliate marketing drive variety-seeking behaviour in green shopping, with consumer motives serving as a key mediating factor. The conceptual model developed in this study provides a structured understanding of how modern marketing strategies shape consumer preferences and engagement with green products. This study offers a future research agenda and practical implications for marketers and retailers. By understanding these influences, businesses can refine their marketing strategies to strengthen green shopping motives, encourage sustainable consumption over traditional consumption, and adapt to the dynamic retail landscape. This study investigates the relationship between gender and global media consumption habits, platform preferences, and engagement types. Prior research suggests that gender significantly influences media preferences, with men being traditionally engaged with news, action-oriented content, and competitive media, and women with entertainment, lifestyle, and social media-driven content. The current primary quantitative research is based on a questionnaire that was distributed online and answered by 292 respondents, equally distributed between men and women. The research findings showed that men are more likely to consume news, video games, and discussion-based media. On the other hand, women showed higher engagement with entertainment content, music, and listening-based media. Pearson’s correlation analysis, conducted using SPSS (v23), further confirmed these gendered preferences. Despite the persistence of traditional gendered media patterns, this research also identified the areas in which digital platforms seem to facilitate more balanced engagement across the two genders. In the digital age, mobile games have become a new frontier for cultural identity and virtual consumption among Chinese Generation Z youth. With the development of the internet, users have gradually adapted to the coexistence of virtual and real identities, enriching the “small society” within games. However, virtual consumption and its underlying driving mechanisms have not received sufficient attention. Through interviews with 20 young people of Chinese Generation Z, this study argues that virtual consumption is not only about material consumption but also serves as a link between emotions and identity. In China’s increasingly atomised society, the idea of the “mimetic homeland” has become an essential interactive domain for Generation Z in the digital age. It offers individuals a dynamic space to engage with their cultural identity and sustain emotional resonance amid fragmented social conditions. In the “mimetic homeland”, game content, broadcaster charm, symbolic consumption, and player creation intertwine, allowing mobile games to create a diverse cultural identity mechanism. This mechanism rekindles players’ recognition of cultural identity and provides them with spiritual support. In mobile games, players continuously produce and consume cultural identity, using digital means to shape and spread spiritual consciousness symbols, ultimately achieving cultural identity commodification. Energy sustainability is a key strategic focus of organizations in the transition to renewable energy sources. This study conducted a systematic review of the literature published between 2020 and 2024 to identify energy sustainability strategies at the organizational level that optimize energy efficiency and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Academic databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were consulted, selecting 50 high-impact articles using inclusion criteria related to thematic relevance, timeliness, and methodological rigor. The results showed that digitization, circular economy, and technological innovation are fundamental pillars in energy sustainability. However, significant barriers, such as financial and regulatory restrictions, were identified that hinder the adoption of these strategies. Similarly, the integration of smart technologies and sustainable management models favors the optimization of energy consumption and compliance with environmental regulations. In conclusion, the implementation of these strategies not only contributes to the mitigation of climate change but also improves the operational efficiency of organizations for the formulation of public policies and the possibility of opening new lines of research in energy sustainability. Postoperative pain management after hospital discharge remains one of the main clinical challenges. The use of digital and telemedicine tools offers new opportunities for the continuous monitoring of, and timely intervention in, patients discharged and followed at home. This scoping review, conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, analyzed 26 studies selected through a search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Inclusion criteria comprised studies published between 2015 and 2025 that involved patients discharged home after surgery, that used digital or telemedicine tools for pain management, and that included active involvement of healthcare professionals and reported clinical outcomes. Studies show the use of a variety of digital tools, including mobile applications, web platforms, wearable sensors, automated messaging systems, and virtual reality technologies, alternating across settings for the assessment and management of pain at home, educational and therapeutic support, and to enhance communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Most reported outcomes focus on improved home-based pain control, a reduction in opioid consumption, and a high level of patient satisfaction. However, some challenges remain, particularly the low level of digital literacy among certain segments of the population. In conclusion, the implementation of telemedicine and digital technologies for managing postoperative pain at home proves to be a promising strategy. Nonetheless, it requires further scientific investigation and, from policymakers, significant investments in professional training and technological infrastructure to ensure an increasingly equitable and sustainable distribution of home healthcare services. Moore’s Law is being challenged, as the use of transistors has limitations in terms of physical materials, energy consumption, performance, and economics. To continue Moore’s Law, people have put forward many ideas, one of which is to find smaller devices to replace CMOS transistors. Memristor-based digital logic circuits open new avenues for exploring advanced computing architectures. In this paper, a biomemristor with the structure of Al/gelatin:Au NPs/Al/gelatin was fabricated using gelatin as the substrate and the host material of the dielectric layer. The device has a large switching current ratio, good stability, and physical transient characteristics. The device can be dissolved by soaking in deionized water for 5 min. In addition, the device successfully realizes the functions of NAND and NOR logic gates. It provides an effective method for research on green electronic devices with logic functions. Full article

Sport and sports communication is growing. Sport is an integral part of (everyday) communication in both traditional and so-called new media. Digitalization poses major challenges for sports journalism. In connection with the changing media consumption, the crisis of the majority of print media and the increasing globalization and standardization of sports at the international level, this applies above all to daily newspapers. In addition, sports newsrooms have been described as “toy departments”. This paper discusses the findings of the 2021 International Sports Press Survey (ISPS) on the current state of the quality of sports reporting in daily newspaper and confronts these findings with the results of the 2011 study. Against the backdrop of quality journalism based on diversity, the quantitative content analysis examines 6614 articles from eight countries. The 2021 ISPS results highlighted several key findings regarding the quality and diversity of sports journalism. These included the persistent underrepresentation of women as both authors and protagonists in sports reporting, a focus on current events over in-depth research, and a limited use of sources. However, when compared to data from a decade ago, there is evidence of a slight positive trend towards increased diversity and improved quality in sports journalism. Full article
