Enhancing the real-world performance of sustainably designed and certified green buildings remains a significant challenge, particularly in hot climates where efforts to improve thermal comfort often conflict with energy efficiency goals. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), even newly constructed facilities with green building certifications present opportunities for retrofitting and performance optimization. This study investigates the energy and thermal comfort performance of a LEED Gold-certified, mixed-use university campus in Dubai through a calibrated digital twin developed using IES thermal modelling software. The analysis evaluated existing sustainable design strategies alongside three retrofit energy conservation measures (ECMs): (1) improved building envelope U-values, (2) installation of additional daylight sensors, and (3) optimization of fan coil unit efficiency. Simulation results demonstrated that the three ECMs collectively achieved a total reduction of 15% in annual energy consumption. Thermal comfort was assessed using operative temperature distributions, Predicted Mean Vote (PMV), and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfaction (PPD) metrics. While fan coil optimization yielded the highest energy savings, it led to less favorable comfort outcomes. In contrast, enhancing envelope U-values maintained indoor conditions consistently within ASHRAE-recommended comfort zones. To further support energy reduction and progress toward Net Zero targets, the study also evaluated the integration of a 228.87 kW rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which offset 8.09% of the campus’s annual energy demand. By applying data-driven thermal modelling to assess retrofit impacts on both energy performance and occupant comfort in a certified green building, this study addresses a critical gap in the literature and offers a replicable framework for advancing building performance in hot climate regions. Climate change represents one of the main challenges of this century. The hazards generated by this process are various and involve territorial assets all over the globe. Hydrogeological risk represents one of these aspects, and the violence of rain precipitations has led experts to focus their interest on the study of geotechnical assets in relation to these dangerous weather events. At the same time, geospatial representation in 3D WebGIS based on open-source solutions led specialists to employ this kind of technology to remotely analyze and monitor territorial events considering different sources of information. This study considers the construction of a 3D WebGIS framework for the real-time management of geospatial information developed with open-source technologies applied to the dynamic mapping of precipitation in the metropolitan area of Palermo (Italy) based on real-time weather station acquisitions. The structure considered is a WebGIS platform developed with Cesium.js JavaScript libraries, the Postgres database, Geoserver and Mapserver geospatial servers, and the Anaconda Python platform for activating real-time data connections using Python scripts. This framework represents a basic geospatial digital twin structure useful to municipalities, civil protection services, and firefighters for land management and for activating any preventive operations to ensure territorial safety. Furthermore, the open-source nature of the platform favors the free diffusion of this solution, avoiding expensive applications based on property software. The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

Rotating compressors are foundational in various industrial processes, particularly in the oil-and-gas sector, where reliable fault detection is crucial for maintaining operational continuity. While Graph Attention Network (GAT) frameworks are widely available, this study advances the state of the art by introducing a Bayesian GAT method specifically tailored for vibration-based compressor fault diagnosis. The approach integrates domain-specific digital-twin simulations built with Rotordynamic software (1.3.0), and constructs dual adjacency matrices to encode both physically informed and data-driven sensor relationships. Additionally, a hybrid forecasting-and-reconstruction objective enables the model to capture short-term deviations as well as long-term waveform fidelity. Monte Carlo dropout further decomposes prediction uncertainty into aleatoric and epistemic components, providing a more robust and interpretable model. Comparative evaluations against conventional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based autoencoder and forecasting methods demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves superior fault-detection performance across multiple fault types, including misalignment, bearing failure, and unbalance. Moreover, uncertainty analyses confirm that fault severity correlates with increasing levels of both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty, reflecting heightened noise and reduced model confidence under more severe conditions. By enhancing GAT fundamentals with a domain-tailored dual-graph strategy, specialized Bayesian inference, and digital-twin data generation, this research delivers a comprehensive and interpretable solution for compressor fault diagnosis, paving the way for more reliable and risk-aware predictive maintenance in complex rotating machinery. Recently, deep learning algorithms have been increasingly applied in construction for activity recognition, particularly for excavators, to automate processes and enhance safety and productivity through continuous monitoring of earthmoving activities. These deep learning algorithms analyze construction videos to classify excavator activities for earthmoving purposes. However, previous studies have solely focused on single-source external videos, which limits the activity recognition capabilities of the deep learning algorithm. This paper introduces a novel multi-modal deep learning-based methodology for recognizing excavator activities, utilizing multi-stream input data. It processes point clouds and RGB images using the two-stream long short-term memory convolutional neural network (CNN-LSTM) method to extract spatiotemporal features, enabling the recognition of excavator activities. A comprehensive dataset comprising 495,000 video frames of synchronized RGB and point cloud data was collected across multiple construction sites under varying conditions. The dataset encompasses five key excavator activities: Approach, Digging, Dumping, Idle, and Leveling. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, the performance of the two-stream CNN-LSTM architecture is compared with that of single-stream CNN-LSTM models on the same RGB and point cloud datasets, separately. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stream approach achieved an accuracy of 94.67%, outperforming existing state-of-the-art single-stream models, which achieved 90.67% accuracy for the RGB-based model and 92.00% for the point cloud-based model. These findings underscore the potential of the proposed activity recognition method, making it highly effective for automatic real-time monitoring of excavator activities, thereby laying the groundwork for future integration into digital twin systems for proactive maintenance and intelligent equipment management. The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and its underlying market structure play a central role in the EU’s climate policy. This study analyses how the network of trading relationships within the EU ETS has evolved from a hub-dominated architecture to one marked by structural change and the emergence of new trading dynamics. Using transaction data from Phases I–IV, we apply complex network analysis to assess changes in connectivity, centrality, and community structure. We then construct a Digital Twin of the EU ETS, integrating graph neural networks and logistic regression models to simulate the entry of new participants and predict future trading links. The results indicate shifts in network composition and connectivity, especially in Phase IV, where regulatory innovations and institutional mechanisms appear to play a key role. While our analysis focuses on structural dynamics, these patterns may have broader implications for market performance and policy effectiveness. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring the evolving trading network alongside price signals to support a resilient, efficient, and environmentally credible carbon market. Full article

The construction sector significantly contributes to global environmental degradation through intensive resource extraction, high energy consumption, and substantial waste generation. Addressing this unsustainable trajectory requires integrated approaches that simultaneously improve operational efficiency and material circularity. Lean Construction (LC) and Circular Economy (CE) offer complementary frameworks for enhancing process performance and reducing environmental impacts. However, their combined implementation remains underdeveloped and fragmented. This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of 18 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2025, selected using PRISMA 2020 guidelines and sourced from Scopus and Web of Science databases. A mixed-method approach combines bibliometric mapping and qualitative content analysis to investigate how LC and CE are jointly operationalized in construction contexts. The findings reveal that LC improves cost, time, and workflow reliability, while CE enables reuse, modularity, and lifecycle extension. Integration is further supported by digital tools—such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), and digital twins—which enhance traceability and flow optimization. Nonetheless, persistent barriers—including supply chain fragmentation, lack of standards, and regulatory gaps—continue to constrain widespread adoption. This review identifies six strategic enablers for LC-CE integration: crossdisciplinary competencies, collaborative governance, interoperable digital systems, standardized indicators, incentive-based regulation, and pilot demonstrator projects. By consolidating fragmented evidence, the study provides a structured research agenda and practical insights to guide the transition toward more circular, efficient, and sustainable construction practices. The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Digital Twin (DT) technologies offers new opportunities for enhancing reinforcement design and on-site constructability. This study addresses a current gap in DT applications by introducing an intelligent framework that simultaneously automates rebar layout generation and reduces rebar cutting waste (RCW), two challenges often overlooked during the construction execution phase. The system employs heuristic algorithms to generate constructability-aware rebar configurations and leverages Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema-based data models for interoperability. The framework is implemented using Autodesk Revit and Dynamo for rebar modeling and layout generation, Microsoft Project for schedule integration, and Autodesk Navisworks for clash detection. Real-time scheduling synchronization is achieved through IFC schema-based BIM models linked to construction timelines, while embedded clash detection and constructability feedback loops allow for iterative refinement and improved installation feasibility. A case study on a high-rise commercial building demonstrates substantial material savings, improved constructability, and reduced layout time, validating the practical advantages of BIM–DT integration for RC construction. This study presents a data-driven methodology to optimize the operational efficiency of a tugboat equipped with a Voith-Schneider Propeller (VSP) based on full-scale fuel consumption and vessel performance data. The objective is to identify optimal combinations of engine RPM and propeller pitch to reduce fuel consumption during low-demand phases without compromising maneuverability. Sea trials were conducted under controlled conditions using a dual flowmeter system and onboard speed measurements. The data enabled the construction of performance curves, efficiency ratios, and interpolated maps of fuel consumption. Optimal configurations were identified across defined speed ranges, and continuous efficiency zones were visualized through iso-consumption and contour plots. The results reveal a nonlinear relationship between propeller pitch, speed, and fuel demand, with maximum efficiency occurring at medium-to-high pitch values and speeds between 3 and 6 knots. This methodology provides a replicable tool for energy management in port operations and supports informed decisions during accompanying operations and standby periods. Efficiency differences over 300% between RPM–pitch settings were found, highlighting the operational impact of informed configuration choices. Moreover, the structured dataset and visual analysis framework lay the groundwork for future digital twin models aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in VSP-powered tugboats. Full article

Sustainable THz SWIPT via RIS-Enabled Sensing and Adaptive Power Focusing: Toward Green 6G IoT

Terahertz (THz) communications and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) hold the potential to energize battery-less Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices while enabling multi-gigabit data transmission. However, severe path loss, blockages, and rectifier nonlinearity significantly hinder both throughput and harvested energy. Additionally, high-power THz beams pose safety concerns by potentially exceeding specific absorption rate (SAR) limits. We propose a sensing-adaptive power-focusing (APF) framework in which a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) embeds low-rate THz sensors. Real-time backscatter measurements construct a spatial map used for the joint optimisation of (i) RIS phase configurations, (ii) multi-tone SWIPT waveforms, and (iii) nonlinear power-splitting ratios. A weighted MMSE inner loop maximizes the data rate, while an outer alternating optimisation applies semidefinite relaxation to enforce passive-element constraints and SAR compliance. Full-stack simulations at 0.3 THz with 20 GHz bandwidth and up to 256 RIS elements show that APF (i) improves the rate–energy Pareto frontier by 30–75% over recent adaptive baselines; (ii) achieves a 150% gain in harvested energy and a 440 Mbps peak per-user rate; (iii) reduces energy-efficiency variance by half while maintaining a Jain fairness index of 0.999;; and (iv) caps SAR at 1.6 W/kg, which is 20% below the IEEE C95.1 safety threshold. The algorithm converges in seven iterations and executes within <3 ms on a Cortex-A78 processor, ensuring compliance with real-time 6G control budgets. The proposed architecture supports sustainable THz-powered networks for smart factories, digital-twin logistics, wire-free extended reality (XR), and low-maintenance structural health monitors, combining high-capacity communication, safe wireless power transfer, and carbon-aware operation for future 6G cyber–physical systems. This study conducts a comprehensive systematic review of the economic impact of Digital Twin (DT) technology within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, following the PRISMA methodology. While DT adoption has been accelerated by advancements in Building Information Modelling (BIM), the Internet of Things (IoT), and data analytics, significant challenges persist—most notably, high initial investment costs and integration complexities. Synthesising the literature from 2016 onwards, this review identifies sector-specific barriers, regulatory burdens, and a lack of standardisation as key factors constituting DT implementation costs. Despite these hurdles, DTs demonstrate strong potential for enhancing construction productivity, optimising lifecycle asset management, and enabling predictive maintenance, ultimately reducing operational expenditures and improving long-term financial performance. Case studies reveal cost efficiencies achieved through DTs in modular construction, energy optimisation, and infrastructure management. However, limited financial resources and digital skills continue to constrain the uptake across the sector, with various extents of impact. This paper calls for the development of unified standards, innovative public–private funding mechanisms, and strategic collaborations to unlock and utilise DTs’ full economic value. It also recommends that future research explore theoretical frameworks addressing governance, data infrastructure, and digital equity—particularly through conceptualising DT-related data as public assets or collective goods in the context of smart cities and networked infrastructure systems. Autonomous earthwork machinery is gaining traction as a means to boost productivity and safety on space-constrained urban sites, yet the fast-growing literature has not been fully integrated. To clarify current knowledge, we systematically searched Scopus and screened 597 records, retaining 157 peer-reviewed papers (2015–March 2025) that address autonomy, integrated control, or risk mitigation for excavators, bulldozers, and loaders. Descriptive statistics, VOSviewer mapping, and qualitative synthesis show the output rising rapidly and peaking at 30 papers in 2024, led by China, Korea, and the USA. Four tightly linked themes dominate: perception-driven machine autonomy, IoT-enabled integrated control systems, multi-sensor safety strategies, and the first demonstrations of fleet-level collaboration (e.g., coordinated excavator clusters and unmanned aerial vehicle and unmanned ground vehicle (UAV–UGV) site preparation). Advances include centimeter-scale path tracking, real-time vision-light detection and ranging (LiDAR) fusion and geofenced safety envelopes, but formal validation protocols and robust inter-machine communication remain open challenges. The review distils five research priorities, including adaptive perception and artificial intelligence (AI), digital-twin integration with building information modeling (BIM), cooperative multi-robot planning, rigorous safety assurance, and human–automation partnership that must be addressed to transform isolated prototypes into connected, self-optimizing fleets capable of delivering safer, faster, and more sustainable urban construction. Surface Protection Technologies for Earthen Sites in the 21st Century: Hotspots, Evolution, and Future Trends in Digitalization, Intelligence, and Sustainability

As vital material carriers of human civilization, earthen sites are experiencing continuous surface deterioration under the combined effects of weathering and anthropogenic damage. Traditional surface conservation techniques, due to their poor compatibility and limited reversibility, struggle to address the compound challenges of micro-scale degradation and macro-scale deformation. With the deep integration of digital twin technology, spatial information technologies, intelligent systems, and sustainable concepts, earthen site surface conservation technologies are transitioning from single-point applications to multidimensional integration. However, challenges remain in terms of the insufficient systematization of technology integration and the absence of a comprehensive interdisciplinary theoretical framework. Based on the dual-core databases of Web of Science and Scopus, this study systematically reviews the technological evolution of surface conservation for earthen sites between 2000 and 2025. CiteSpace 6.2 R4 and VOSviewer 1.6 were used for bibliometric visualization analysis, which was innovatively combined with manual close reading of the key literature and GPT-assisted semantic mining (error rate < 5%) to efficiently identify core research themes and infer deeper trends. The results reveal the following: (1) technological evolution follows a three-stage trajectory—from early point-based monitoring technologies, such as remote sensing (RS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS), to spatial modeling technologies, such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and geographic information systems (GIS), and, finally, to today’s integrated intelligent monitoring systems based on multi-source fusion; (2) the key surface technology system comprises GIS-based spatial data management, high-precision modeling via LiDAR, 3D reconstruction using oblique photogrammetry, and building information modeling (BIM) for structural protection, while cutting-edge areas focus on digital twin (DT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) for intelligent monitoring, augmented reality (AR) for immersive visualization, and blockchain technologies for digital authentication; (3) future research is expected to integrate big data and cloud computing to enable multidimensional prediction of surface deterioration, while virtual reality (VR) will overcome spatial–temporal limitations and push conservation paradigms toward automation, intelligence, and sustainability. This study, grounded in the technological evolution of surface protection for earthen sites, constructs a triadic framework of “intelligent monitoring–technological integration–collaborative application,” revealing the integration needs between DT and VR for surface technologies. It provides methodological support for addressing current technical bottlenecks and lays the foundation for dynamic surface protection, solution optimization, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Earthen flood protection structures are planned and constructed with an expected service life of several decades while being exposed to environmental impacts that may lead to structural or hydraulic failure. Current maintenance procedures involve only repairing external damage, leaving internal processes contributing to structural damage often undetected. Through structural health monitoring (SHM), structural deficits can be detected before visible damage occurs. To improve maintenance workflows and support predictive maintenance of dikes, this paper reports on the integration of digital twin concepts with SHM strategies, referred to as “digital-twin-based SHM”. A digital twin concept, including a standard-compliant building information model, is proposed and implemented in terms of a digital twin environment. For integrating monitoring and sensor data into the digital twin environment, a customized webform is designed. A communication protocol links preprocessed sensor data stored on a server with the digital twin environment, enabling model-based visualization and contextualization of the sensor data. As will be shown in this paper, a digital twin environment is set up and managed in the context of SHM in compliance with technical standards and using well-established software tools. In conclusion, digital-twin-based SHM, as proposed in this paper, has proven to advance predictive maintenance of dikes, contributing to the resilience of critical infrastructure against environmental impacts. (1) Background: A severe decline in knee joint function significantly affects the mobility of the elderly, making it a key concern in the field of geriatric health. To alleviate the pressure on the knee joints of the elderly during daily movements such as sitting and standing, effective biomechanical solutions are required. (2) Methods: In this study, a biomechanical framework was established based on mechanical analysis to derive the transfer relationship between the ground reaction force and the knee joint moment. Experiments were designed to collect knee joint data on the elderly during the sit-to-stand process. Meanwhile, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images were processed through a medical imaging control system to construct a detailed digital 3D knee joint model. A finite element analysis was used to verify the model to ensure the accuracy of its structure and mechanical properties. An improved radial basis function was used to fit the pressure during the entire sit-to-stand conversion process to reduce the computational workload, with an error of less than 5%. In addition, a small-target human key point recognition network was developed to analyze the image sequences captured by the camera. The knee joint angle and the knee joint pressure distribution during the sit-to-stand conversion process were mapped to a three-dimensional interactive platform to form a digital twin system. (3) Results: The system can effectively capture the biomechanical behavior of the knee joint during movement and shows high accuracy in joint angle tracking and structure simulation. (4) Conclusions: This study provides an accurate and comprehensive method for analyzing the biomechanical characteristics of the knee joint during the movement of the elderly, laying a solid foundation for clinical rehabilitation research and the design of assistive devices in the field of rehabilitation medicine.
