Informal settlements, urban areas with substandard housing conditions and inadequate infrastructure, are increasing in Africa’s sub-Saharan cities, fueled by rapid urbanization, economic challenges, and high housing prices. However, developers often ignore the green building (GB) concept when upgrading housing conditions for these communities. This study aims to investigate GB design strategies specifically for residential structures in Akabahizi to identify and propose practical strategies suitable for informal settlements such as Akabahizi and to develop sustainable housing solutions that enhance environmental quality and meet the needs of residents. Simulation software and combined qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques, including field surveys, interviews, and assessments of existing building conditions, constitute the methodology used in this study. The focus was on the influence of climatic factors, including temperature, precipitation, and wind, on design choices, particularly GB design and current residential buildings in Akabahizi. Based on the survey, 82.5% of residents support the GB concept, 87.4% recognize the importance of GB for community well-being, and 97.1% recognize the benefits of integrating energy-efficient technology for residents’ well-being. Questionnaire findings were considered in decision-making for the design of the new proposed structure to address challenges in the area. Optimized energy efficiency, daylight access, and thermal comfort resulting from courtyard design support GB design incorporating a courtyard as a robust and culturally relevant sustainable design framework tailored for Akabahizi. The courtyard provides green space that promotes social interaction, improves air quality, and delivers natural cooling elements that are essential for residential housing. The proposed new design, with green roof and renewable energy devices, improved material usage, and natural ventilation elements, outperformed the existing one in terms of lower levels of carbon emission for environmental protection. In conclusion, a collaborative effort is needed among various stakeholders, including architects, urban planners, and educational institutions, to promote and implement sustainable building practices. The study suggests that enhancing awareness, offering training opportunities, and empowering local professionals and residents alike can pave the way for improved living conditions and sustainable urban development in Akabahizi and similar informal settlements. Recent research has increasingly emphasized the synergies between Supply Chain Management Practices (SCMPs) and Quality Management Principles (QMPs), particularly through the emerging concept of Supply Chain Quality Management (SCQM). Despite this recognition, empirical evidence on how these practices interact to influence performance remains very limited, especially in the context of developing countries. This study addresses the gap by interviewing 70 Tunisian agri-food companies to investigate the relationships between five dimensions of SCMP, strategic supplier partnerships, customer relationship, information sharing, information quality and postponement, and the seven principles of ISO9001 QMP: leadership, engagement of people, improvement, customer focus, process approach, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management. Using factor analysis and structural equation modelling, the study explores the mediating role of competitive advantage (CA): price/cost, product quality, product innovation, delivery dependability and time-to-market—on operational performance. The findings indicate that analyzing SCMP, QMP, and CA as aggregated blocks does not produce significant explanatory correlations. Instead, judiciously reorganizing their sub-constructs into five integrated groups provides a more effective model: (1) information and decision capacity, (2) customer-centric innovation, (3) process management and agility, (4) supplier and network management, and (5) leadership and workforce engagement. This integrated classification offers managers a coherent framework for implementing SCMP and QMP to enhance competitiveness results. Full article

This article develops the concept of digital genealogy as a critical lens for understanding contemporary subjectivity in environments structured by platforms and algorithms. Building on Benjamin’s aura, Bauman’s liquidity, and Han’s burnout, the analysis traces how digital selfhood is produced through practices of performative presence, memory curation, and visibility. Empirical studies of selfies, ephemeral stories, and Bitmojis illustrate how authenticity is negotiated through fragments that are at once intimate and replicable, while van Dijck’s work shows how digital memory shifts from archiving the past to continuously fabricating the self. The paradox that emerges—identities are performed as fleeting yet archived permanently by infrastructures—reveals the coexistence of ephemerality and machinic inscription. Read through Benjamin’s concept of aura, reinterpreted by contemporary authors such as Mirzoeff, Groys, and Hansen, this transformation situates singularity not only in artworks but in the self, which must be ceaselessly enacted and recomposed in algorithmic environments. The framework also connects to critiques of precarity and exploitation: Marcuse, Fuchs, and Varoufakis highlight how self-expression doubles as unpaid digital labor within platform capitalism. Digital genealogy thus provides both a theoretical and normative contribution: it discloses the paradox of visibility and exhaustion as the price of belonging, and it points toward future empirical research—such as ethnographies of adolescents and creators—that can test how individuals negotiate the tension between platform imperatives and the desire for rooted self-narratives. This paper presents the concept and development of an autonomous DIY air quality sensor for citizen science. Large civil monitoring projects often rely on air quality calculations based on PM2.5 and PM10 dust readings in combination with some gases and do not cover the full list of air quality indicators. The authors have analyzed existing air quality calculation methodologies and attempted to conceptualize a universal AQI monitoring device for use in citizen science and by volunteers. This device is based on the available ESP32 DevKit v1 platform to which compatible sensors have been selected to monitor AQI indicators such as PM2.5 and PM10 dust particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia. The SD card module was chosen for data storage, the NB-IoT module for data transmission, and a battery pack for autonomy. The housing, sensor design components, and fasteners were also selected. All components are available on the international market. Based on the selected element base, an electrical connection diagram was designed, the device’s design, presented in the form of 3D models, was developed, and the assembly process was described. The cost of the device was also evaluated and compared to the price level of existing DIY devices used in citizen science. Full article

Vaccination has resulted in substantial public health benefits for human populations worldwide since it was first introduced more than a century ago. This article presents an overview of the history of vaccine development, its implementation, and price setting, the latter mainly from a developed world perspective. It considers potential issues and challenges. Over time, vaccine development and production has evolved to a market-driven approach, conducted largely by private commercial entities. The complex processes of identifying potential vaccine targets and developing and producing vaccines at scale have now become more efficient. However, vaccine pricing is an emerging concern. The elements that maximize the overall health benefit of vaccination include high volume, high coverage, and rapid initial implementation to achieve the high coverage with the vaccine as quickly as possible. It therefore requires substantial initial investment. Consequently, the price set for the vaccine should be reasonable to avoid limiting the coverage given the available budget. Suboptimal coverage leads to suboptimal benefit if herd protection is not fully achieved. This may disappoint health authorities and may result in program discontinuation. Conventional cost-effectiveness analysis is therefore not ideally suited to vaccine price setting, as it is based on the concept of ‘more for more’, i.e., higher health gain achieved at a higher reimbursement cost that does not account for limited budgets. Constrained optimization (CO) combines value assessment with constrained budget allocation into one analysis method and may therefore be the better option for vaccine pricing. Full article

Meeting the demands for advanced technology and superior quality in the automotive industry has become essential. Continuous evolution requires a rigorous analysis of every step taken. Customers demand high performance in the technology, design, and digitalization, as well as, of course, quality at a competitive price. To meet these expectations, engineers ensure transparency and trust at every stage of the project, guaranteeing flawless execution. This paper aims to highlight a clear and transparent approach to the 8D analysis method, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying and solving engineering problems. Furthermore, quality planning and 8D analysis are fundamental pillars of quality management in the automotive industry. To ensure a comprehensive and well-founded approach, this paper combines several research methods: a review of the specialized literature, a hypothetical case study approach, and comparative analysis. The proposed methodology allows for a deep understanding of the concepts addressed, facilitating their applicability in real situations. The main conclusions drawn from this research are that quality planning in an automotive buckle development project has proven to be an essential and complex process, directly influencing the success of the project, the safety of end users, and their satisfaction. The analysis of the implementation of the quality planning process, as previously described, has highlighted several fundamental aspects that must be considered to ensure the success and performance of such a project. Efficient and cost-effective biomass logistics remain a significant challenge due to the dynamic and nonlinear nature of supply chains, as well as the scarcity of comprehensive data on this topic. As biomass plays an increasingly important role in sustainable energy systems, managing its complex supply chains efficiently is crucial. Traditional logistics methods often struggle with the dynamic, nonlinear, and data-scarce nature of biomass supply, especially when integrating local and international sources. To address these challenges, this study aims to develop an innovative modular artificial neural network (ANN)-based Biomass Delivery Management (BDM) model to optimize biomass procurement and supply for a fluidized bed combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The comprehensive model integrates technical, economic, and geographic parameters to enable supplier selection, optimize transport routes, and inform fuel blending strategies, representing a novel approach in biomass logistics. A case study based on operational data confirmed the model’s ability to identify cost-effective and quality-compliant biomass sources. Evaluated using empirical operational data from a Polish CHP plant, the ANN-based model demonstrated high predictive accuracy (MAE = 0.16, MSE = 0.02, R2 = 0.99) within the studied scope. The model effectively handled incomplete datasets typical of biomass markets, aiding in supplier selection decisions and representing a proof-of-concept for optimizing Central European biomass logistics. The model was capable of generalizing supplier recommendations based on input variables, including biomass type, unit price, and annual demand. The proposed framework supports both strategic and real-time logistics decisions, providing a robust tool for enhancing supply chain transparency, cost efficiency, and resilience in the renewable energy sector. Future research will focus on extending the dataset and developing hybrid models to strengthen supply chain stability and adaptability under varying market and regulatory conditions. Full article

This study explores how Turkish Generation Z adapts their fashion consumption behaviours in response to economic crises, particularly focusing on involuntary anti-consumerism. Through a qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews and purposive sampling, the research captures the coping strategies and emotional experiences of young consumers in Türkiye. A thematic analysis of fifteen interviews reveals an original “8Rs” framework—Reject, Restrict/Reduce, Reuse/Reclaim, Re-find, Reconsider, Re-framing Discounts, Re-direction of Resources, and Emotional Responses—that illustrates both behavioural and psychological adjustments under financial strain. Notably, the study introduces two novel concepts: “recession rush,” a calculated urgency to purchase before price hikes, and “re-direction of resources,” the reallocation of budget from other categories toward fashion purchases. By focusing on a geographically underrepresented context and a pivotal consumer segment, this research contributes new insights to the literature on anti-consumption, economic adaptation, and youth identity expression in crisis economies. Soils are critical natural resources, yet their abiotic contributions to ecosystem services remain largely unexplored in valuation studies. This pilot study represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first attempt to assess the perceived value of geosystem services (GSs) from a consumer perspective. Using a discrete choice experiment with 200 respondents, we evaluated preferences for Rotella apples and Moscatello wine through mixed multinomial logit and latent class models. Results show that attributes related to soil use and soil control were consistently significant drivers of consumer utility (e.g., odds ratios of 9.38 and 5.78 for Moscatello wine and 8.46 and 5.56 for Rotella apples, respectively; p < 0.01). These attributes align more closely with the concept of a “geological fingerprint” than with existing geographical labeling schemes such as the Protected Designation of Origin. Price effects were statistically insignificant, indicating virtually no influence on choices. Both estimated models revealed preference heterogeneity and a substantial number of no-buy responses. This suggests both limited consumer familiarity with GS concepts and a limitation of our attribute descriptions, which likely failed to convey information needed for effective purchasing decisions. This study is exploratory and limited by its convenience sample, imperfect price specification, and inability to estimate willingness-to-pay measures. Nevertheless, it provides empirical support for introducing geological footprint labeling and highlights the need for improved consumer information, policy tools, and public campaigns to promote recognition and sustainable management of geodiversity in agriculture. This paper aims to explore Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) in combination with Demand Response (DR) concepts, integrating solar power generation, Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and discharging, and user loads to establish an optimal energy management scheduling system. Willingness curves for load curtailment are derived based on the consumption patterns of industrial, commercial, and residential users, enabling VPPs to design DR mechanisms under Time-of-Use (TOU), two-stage, and critical peak pricing periods. An energy management model for a VPP is developed by integrating DR, EV charging and discharging, and user loads. To solve this model and optimize economic benefits, this paper proposes an Improved Wolf Pack Search Algorithm (IWPSA). Based on the original Wolf Pack Search Algorithm (WPSA), the Improved Wolf Pack Search Algorithm (IWPSA) enhances the key behaviors of detection and encirclement. By reinforcing the attack strategy, the algorithm achieves better search performance and improved stability. IWPSA provides a parameter optimization mechanism with global search capability, enhancing searching efficiency and increasing the likelihood of finding optimal solutions. It is used to simulate and analyze the maximum profit of the VPP under various scenarios, such as different seasons, incentive prices, and DR periods. The verification analysis in this paper demonstrates that the proposed method can not only assist decision makers in improving the operation and scheduling of VPPs, but also serve as a valuable reference for system architecture planning and more effectively evaluating the performance of VPP operation management. This study investigated the reproductive and economic costs of four estrus synchronization protocols in multiparous Holstein dairy cows: Ovsynch with one or two artificial inseminations (AIs), and Double Ovsynch with one or two AIs. A total of 216 clinically healthy cows were randomly assigned to one of the four treatment groups (n = 54 each). Pregnancy diagnosis was performed by transrectal ultrasonography at 33 days post insemination. Economic calculations included the cost of hormonal treatments, insemination, and pregnancy diagnosis, reflecting market prices in large scale Romanian dairy operations. The highest pregnancy rate (64.8%) and lowest cost per confirmed pregnancy (EUR 89.51) were achieved in the group treated with Double Ovsynch followed by a single AI. The standard Ovsynch protocol with one AI yielded the lowest conception rate (42.6%), indicating limited effectiveness under fixed-time AI conditions. These findings suggest that Double Ovsynch with a single insemination is the most effective and economically viable protocol for reproductive management in intensively managed dairy herds. To promote a more decentralized energy system, the European Commission introduced the concept of Renewable Energy Communities (RECs). Meanwhile, the increasing penetration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) may significantly increase peak power demand and consumption ramps when charging sessions are left uncontrolled. However, by integrating smart charging strategies, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), EV storage can actively support the energy balance within RECs. In this context, this work proposes a comprehensive and scalable model for leveraging smart charging capabilities in RECs. This approach focuses on an external cooperative framework to optimize incentive acquisition and reduce dependence on Medium Voltage (MV) grid substations. It adopts a hybrid strategy, combining Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to solve the day-ahead global optimization problem with local rule-based controllers to manage power deviations. Simulation results for a six-month case study, using historical demand data and synthetic charging sessions generated from real-world events, demonstrate that V2G integration leads to a better alignment of overall power consumption with zonal pricing, smoother load curves with a 15.5% reduction in consumption ramps, and enhanced cooperation with a 90% increase in shared power redistributed inside the REC. In this paper a new state model is introduced, an adaptative state model in a binary temporal representation (ASMBRT) as well as its application in constructing an algorithmic trading system. The presented model uses the binary temporal representation, which allows for a precise analysis of exchange rates without losing any informative value of the data. The basis of the model is the trajectory analysis for the ensuing changes in price quotations and dependencies between the duration of each change. The main advantage of the model is to eliminate the threshold analysis, used in existing state models. This solution allows for a more accurate identification of investor behavior patterns, which translates into a reduction of investment risk. This paper develops a unified framework for mathematical finance under general semimartingale models that allow for dividend payments, negative asset prices, and unbounded jumps. We present a rigorous approach to the mathematical modeling of financial markets with dividend-paying assets by defining appropriate concepts of numéraires, discounted processes, and self-financing trading strategies. While most of the mathematical results are not new, this unified framework has been missing in the literature. We carefully examine the transition between nominal and discounted price processes and define appropriate notions of admissible strategies that work naturally in both settings. By establishing the equivalence between these models and providing clear conditions for their applicability, we create a mathematical foundation that encompasses a wide range of realistic market scenarios and can serve as a basis for future work on mathematical finance and derivative pricing. We demonstrate the practical relevance of our framework through a comprehensive application to dividend-paying equity markets where the framework naturally handles discrete dividend payments. This application shows that our theoretical framework is not merely abstract but provides the rigorous foundation for pricing derivatives in real-world markets where classical assumptions need extension. The production of bio-based products for different purposes has become an increasingly common strategy over the last few decades, both in Europe and worldwide. This trend seeks to contribute to mitigating the impacts associated with climate change and to cope with the ambitious objectives established at European level. Over recent decades, agro-industries have shown significant potential as biomass suppliers, triggering the development of robust logistical supply chains and the valorization of by-products to obtain bio-based products that can be marketed at competitive prices. However, this transformation may, in some cases, involve restructuring traditional business model to incorporate the biorefinery concept. In this sense, the first step in developing a bio-based value chain involves assessing the resource’s availability and characterizing the feedstock to select the valorization pathway and the bio-application with the greatest potential. The paper incorporates inputs from a case study on PATURPAT, a company commercializing a wide range of ready-prepared potato products, which has commissioned a starch extraction facility to process the rejected pieces of potatoes and water from the process to obtain starch that can be further valorized for different bio-applications. This study aims to comprehensively review current trends and frameworks for potatoes processing agro-industries and define the most suitable bio-applications to target, as well as identify opportunities and challenges.
