This study investigates the effect of rotation step size on the performance of flat-plate solar collectors (FPSC) equipped with single-axis tracking. Numerical simulations were carried out in EnergyPlus, coupled with a custom Python interface enabling dynamic control of collector orientation. The analysis was carried out for the city of Kragujevac in Serbia, located in a temperate continental climate zone, based on five representative summer days (3 July–29 September) to account for seasonal variability. Three collector types with different efficiency parameters were considered, and inlet water temperatures of 20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C were applied to represent typical operating conditions. The results show that single-axis tracking increased the incident irradiance by up to 28% and the useful seasonal heat gain by up to 25% compared to the fixed configuration. Continuous tracking (ψ = 1°) achieved the highest energy yield but required 181 daily movements, which makes it mechanically demanding. Stepwise tracking with ψ = 10–15° retained more than 90–95% of the energy benefit of continuous tracking while reducing the number of daily movements to 13–19. For larger steps (ψ = 45–90°), the advantage of tracking decreased sharply, with thermal output only 5–10% higher than the fixed case. Increasing the inlet temperature from 20 °C to 40 °C reduced seasonal heat gain by approximately 30% across all scenarios. Overall, the findings indicate that relative single-axis tracking with ψ between 10° and 15° provides the most practical balance between energy efficiency, reliability, and economic viability, making it well-suited for residential-scale solar thermal systems. This is the first study to quantify how discrete rotation steps in single-axis tracking affect both thermal and economic performance of flat-plate collectors. The proposed EnergyPlus–Python model demonstrates that a 10–15° step offers 90–95% of the continuous-tracking energy gain while reducing actuator motion by ~85%. The results provide practical guidance for optimizing low-cost solar-thermal tracking in continental climates. Full article

Photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) solar collector technologies are considered a highly efficient solution for sustainable energy generation, capable of producing electricity and heat simultaneously. This paper reviews and discusses different aspects of PVT collectors, including fundamental principles, materials, diverse classifications, such as air-type and water-type, and different cooling mechanisms to boost their performance, such as nano-fluids, Phase Change Materials (PCMs), and Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs). At the system level, this paper analyses PVT technologies’ integration in buildings and industrial applications and gives a comprehensive market overview. The methodology focused on evaluating advancements in design, thermal management, and overall system efficiency based on existing literature published from 2010 to 2025. From the findings of various studies, water-based PVT systems provide electrical efficiencies ranging from 8% to 22% and thermal efficiencies between 30% and 70%, which are almost always higher than air-based alternatives. Innovations, including nanofluids, phase change materials, and hybrid topologies, have improved energy conversion and storage. Market data indicates growing adoption in Europe and Asia, stressing significant investments led by Sunmaxx, Abora Solar, Naked Energy, and DualSun. Nonetheless, obstacles to PVT arise regarding aspects such as cost, design complexity, lack of awareness, and economic incentives. According to the findings of this study, additional research is required to reduce the operational expenses of such systems, improve system integration, and build supportive policy frameworks. This paper offers guidance on PVT technologies and how they can be integrated into different setups based on current normativity and regulatory frameworks. Full article

The new type of gold cone filter cartridge has dual functions of increasing filter area and enhancing pulsed-jet cleaning, but the issue of patchy cleaning remains to be addressed. This study further enhances the pulsed-jet cleaning performance of cone filter cartridges by employing a porous diffusion nozzle. The temporal and spatial distributions of pulse jet velocity and pressure under the condition of porous nozzles were investigated through numerical modeling. The variation law of pressure on the side wall of the filter cartridge was analyzed. The influence of jet distance of porous nozzles on pulsed-jet pressure and pulsed-jet uniformity was experimentally investigated. Dust filtration and cleaning experiments were conducted, and the filtration pressure drop, dust emission concentration, and comprehensive filtration performance were compared. It was found that the airflow jetted by the porous diffusion nozzle is more divergent than that of the common round nozzle. This results in a larger entrainment of the jet stream, a milder collision of the jet stream with the cartridge cone, and a slower overall velocity reduction. More airflow is generated into the filter cartridge and accumulated; the accumulated static pressure covers a larger range of the upper section of the filter cartridge, with a longer duration of static pressure. In the online dust filtration and cleaning experiment, compared with the condition of the common round nozzle, the porous nozzle can reduce the residual pressure drop by 27.0%, increase the filtration cleaning interval by a factor of 3.80, reduce the average dust emission concentration by 45.2%, and increase the comprehensive performance index QF by 5.2%. The research conclusions can provide references for the design and optimization of industrial filter cartridge dust collectors. Full article

Chemical fertilizers are commonly used to supply phosphorus and other nutrients to crops, but due to high affinity of soils for P fixation, over-application of P fertilizer is common, which may result in groundwater and surface water pollution. To increase P use efficiency, different strategies, including different fertilizer formulations and types, have been developed. Two struvite-based fertilizers, Crystal Green® (CG) and Crystal Green Pearl® (CGP), are touted as environmentally safe, because they are insoluble in water but soluble in organic acids exuded from crop roots. The objective of this study was to assess fate and transport of P from diammonium phosphate (DAP), CG, and CGP through two loam soils with a significant difference in their initial P content. Two loamy soils, one collected from an experimental field receiving fertilizer continuously since 1985 and one from an adjacent area receiving no fertilizer, and a pure sand control were packed in 5 cm diameter and 5 cm long columns. Several grains equivalent to approximately 80 mg P from each fertilizer were imbedded at the bottom of the column. Distilled water was passed through the soil columns from the bottom at a relatively constant rate, and the outflow was collected every two hours using a fraction collector. Outflow samples from each treatment combination were analyzed for P by the colorimetric method, and the amount of P retained by the soils along the column at the end of the water application was determined by the nitric acid digestion method. Approximately 91% of P in DAP, 34% in CG, and only 3.8% in CGP was transported through the sand column. In contrast, the amounts of P transported were approximately 42.2% for DAP, 6.4% for CG, and 0.4% for CGP through the high-P soil and 22.4% for DAP, 0.6% for CG, and almost zero for CGP through the low-P soil. Overall, the results show a high solubility and transport for DAP, very low transport for CGP, and somewhat low to medium transport for CG fertilizers. In addition, the results show that even the high-P soil that has received fertilizer for about 40 years has the capacity to fix significant amounts of P. Full article

The recent increase in end-of-life (EoL) lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) has become a significant concern worldwide. Most studies in the literature have primarily focused on recovering cathode active metals from black mass (BM), whereas the separation of anode–cathode foils, plastics, and casing metals which are the essential components of LiBs has received relatively little attention. To reduce costs and maximize the recovery of valuable metals in subsequent hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes, EoL LiBs require appropriate pre-treatment. This study aims to scrape off the BM adhering to the electrode foils resulting from gradual crushing and subsequently separate the plastics and copper (Cu) from other metals through a two-step selective flotation process. The results demonstrated that plastics, due to their natural hydrophobicity, could be effectively removed using a frother, achieving more than 95% recovery with less than 5% metallic contamination. Following plastic flotation, Cu particles were floated in the presence of 3418A, yielding a Cu concentrate containing 65.13% Cu with a recovery rate of 96.4%. Additionally, the aluminum (Al) content in the non-floating material, remaining in the cell, increased to approximately 77%. Full article

The term SHIP (solar heat for industrial processes) or SHIPs (solar heat for industrial plants) refers to the use of collected solar radiation for meeting industrial heat demands, rather than for electricity generation. The global thermal capacity of SHIP systems at the end of 2024 stood slightly above 1 GWth, which is comparable to the electric power capacity of a single power station. Despite this relatively small presence, SHIP systems play an important role in rendering industrial processes sustainable. There are two aims in the current study. The first aim is to cover various types of SHIP systems based on the variety of their collector designs, operational temperatures, applications, radiation concentration options, and solar tracking options. SHIP designs can be as simple as unglazed solar collectors (USCs), having a stationary structure without any radiation concentration. On the other hand, SHIP designs can be as complicated as solar power towers (SPTs), having a two-axis solar tracking mechanism with point-focused concentration of the solar radiation. The second aim is to shed some light on the status of SHIP deployment globally, particularly in 2024. This includes a drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of the current study show that more than 1300 SHIP systems were commissioned worldwide by the end of 2024 (cumulative number), constituting a cumulative thermal capacity of 1071.4 MWth, with a total collector area of 1,531,600 m2. In 2024 alone, 120.3 MWth of thermal capacity was introduced in 106 SHIP systems having a total collector area of 171,874 m2. In 2024, 65.9% of the installed global thermal capacity of SHIP systems belonged to the parabolic trough collectors (PTCs), and another 22% of this installed global thermal capacity was attributed to the unevacuated flat plate collectors (FPC-Us). Considering the 106 SHIP systems installed in 2024, the average collector area per system was 1621.4 m2/project. However, this area largely depends on the SHIP category, where it is much higher for parabolic trough collectors (37,740.5 m2/project) but lower for flat plate collectors (805.2 m2/project), and it is lowest for unglazed solar collectors (163.0 m2/project). The study anticipates large deployment in SHIP systems (particularly the PTC type) in 2026 in alignment with gigascale solar-steam utilization in alumina production. Several recommendations are provided with regard to the SHIP sector. Full article

This study explores a hybrid advanced electrochemical oxidation process (EAOP) intensified by solar irradiation and ozone for the treatment of wastewater containing COVID-19-related pharmaceuticals. Pilot-scale trials were performed in a 30 L compound parabolic collector (CPC)-type photoreactor with a boron-doped diamond (BDD–BDD) electrode configuration. Under optimal conditions (50 mg L−1 paracetamol, 0.05 M Na2SO4, 0.50 mM Fe2+, pH 3.0, and 60 mA cm−2), the solar photoelectro-Fenton (SPEF) process achieved 78% chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction within 90 min, with catechol and phenol detected as the main aromatic intermediates. When applied to a four-drug mixture (dexamethasone, paracetamol, amoxicillin, and azithromycin), the solar photoelectro-Fenton (SPEF–ozone (O3)) system reached 60% degradation and 41% COD removal under solar conditions. The results highlight the synergistic effect of ozone and solar energy in enhancing the electrochemical oxidation process (EAOP) performance and demonstrate the potential of these processes for scalable and sustainable removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater. The informal commercialization of wild orchids in central Veracruz, Mexico, poses significant conservation challenges but also offers opportunities for sustainable development through orchid-based tourism. This study evaluated the potential of native orchid tourism as an alternative livelihood for local actors currently engaged in the wild orchid trade. Using a qualitative method approach, 17 semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and species documentation were carried out across eight municipalities. Snowball sampling was employed due to the clandestine nature of the trade. A total of 51 native orchid species were identified, of which 31 are actively traded—many under conservation risk categories. Four actor types were characterized: gatherers, nurserymen, collectors, and companies. Nurserymen and collectors demonstrated the greatest willingness and capacity to transition toward tourism-based conservation activities, whereas gatherers remained economically dependent on wild collection. Identified threats include overharvesting, deforestation, and weak enforcement of trade regulations. The findings highlight the need for policies that integrate legal propagation, certification schemes, and community-based tourism initiatives to reduce pressure on wild populations while supporting local economies. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of orchid trade networks, extending beyond market studies to explore their tourism potential and role in biodiversity conservation. Full article

In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach was employed to predict the outlet air temperature and thermal efficiency of a solar air collector equipped with porous absorber surfaces. The experimental data used for model development were obtained from a custom-built solar air collector whose absorber surface was constructed using porous metallic scourers. Three different absorber surface configurations were tested under varying operating conditions. The dataset included measurements of inlet air temperature, solar irradiance, air mass flow rate, and surface temperatures recorded at four distinct points on the absorber. Corresponding outlet air temperatures and thermal efficiency values were also determined experimentally. ANN models were trained using this dataset, and the prediction results were graphically compared with experimental outcomes for all three surface types. To further evaluate the model’s performance, test data were utilized, and the results were assessed using the correlation coefficient (R) and mean squared error (MSE) metrics. The ANN model demonstrated high predictive accuracy, yielding an R value of 0.99987 and an MSE of 0.0901. Full article

To enhance the accuracy and precision of fault diagnosis and location for the collector lines in wind farms under complex operating conditions, an intelligent combined method based on CNN-LSTM and ICEEMDAN-PE-improved wavelet threshold denoising is proposed. A wind power plant model is established using the PSCADV46/EMTDC software. In response to the issue of indistinct fault current signal characteristics under complex fault conditions, a hybrid fault diagnosis model is constructed using CNN-LSTM. The convolutional neural network is utilized to extract the local time-frequency features of the current signals, while the long short-term memory network is employed to capture the dynamic time series patterns of faults. Combined with the improved phase-mode transformation, various types of faults are intelligently classified, effectively resolving the problem of fault feature extraction and achieving a fault diagnosis accuracy rate of 96.5%. To resolve the problem of small fault current amplitudes, low fault traveling wave amplitudes, and difficulty in accurate location due to noise interference in actual wind farms with high-resistance grounding faults, a combined denoising algorithm based on ICEEMDAN-PE-improved wavelet threshold is proposed. This algorithm, through the collaborative optimization of modal decomposition and entropy threshold, significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and reduces the root mean square error under simulated conditions with injected Gaussian white noise, stabilizing the fault location error within 0.5%. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the fault diagnosis and location method proposed in this paper can effectively meet engineering requirements and provide reliable technical support for the intelligent operation and maintenance system of a wind farm. The incidence of allergic diseases has increased notably in recent years. The reasons for this increase include air pollution, diet, and infectious factors. This study aims to analyze the interactions between aeroallergens, environmental pollutants, and meteorological factors and their impact on allergenic sensitization in Toledo, Spain. An aerobiological study was conducted over the past 30 years (1994–2023) using a Burkard collector and the SEAIC (Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology) methodology. Meteorological data were obtained from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and pollutant data were acquired from the Castilla-La Mancha Air Quality Monitoring Network. Patients presenting with seasonal allergic symptoms at the University Hospital of Toledo were selected for skin testing with various types of airborne pollen. A total of twenty pollen taxa were identified in the Toledo atmosphere, as follows: Cupressaceae (26.53%); Olea europaea (21.62%); Quercus (21.12%); Poaceae (10.30%); Urticaceae (2.58%); Plantago (2.48%); Platanus (2.00%); Amaranthaceae (1.72%); Rumex (1.68%); and Morus, Pistacia, Populus, Artemisia, Fraxinus, Alnus, Carex, and Ericaceae (less than 1% each). The average temperature increased by 1.2 °C, while the level of precipitation remained stable. Among all pollutants, only a moderate increase in ozone levels was observed; however, the concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides decreased. The prevalence of pollen sensitization in allergic patients ranged from 8% for Pinus nigra to 84% for Phleum pratense. In conclusion, the rise in temperature due to climate change, coupled with high concentrations of pollutants such as ozone, can result in increased concentrations of the main types of wind-borne pollen. Thus, this can lead to a greater sensitivity to pollen and, consequently, more people becoming allergic to pollen. Full article

Solar heaters are a sustainable solution to lower operating heating costs for diverse applications. Improving the design of these devices promotes the adoption of this technology to reduce the environmental impact of traditional gas water heaters. The present paper studies heat transfer along the plate-fins of serpentine-type flat-plate solar collectors. The focus of this investigation is the analysis of tube-to-tube thermal conduction through the absorbent plate and its effect on the heat gain of the circulating fluid. The model used here does not consider the adiabatic boundary condition in the plate mid-distance between tubes but applies the prescribed temperatures of the tubes as a boundary condition for the plate-fins. This type of boundary condition allows for heat conduction between rows of tubes. The analysis demonstrates that tube-to-tube heat conduction along the absorber plate has a detrimental effect on the heat gain of the circulating fluid. This effect is responsible for a decrease of up to 10% of the circulating fluid heat gain. This investigation defines the set of parameters that affect the performance of plate solar heaters because of tube-to-tube thermal conduction along the plates, and it helps to choose operation and designs parameters, leading to better design of these devices. Developments of new research tools in flotation studies, including bubble–particle attachment time efficiency and dynamic froth analysis, can help improve our understanding of particle–bubble interactions in flotation processes. In particular, the selection of new collectors and frothers, and their mixtures can provide a wide distribution of bubble sizes at their respective concentrations. In the literature, several studies have reported the effect of different frothers and collector mixtures on bubble characteristics like bubble size and critical coalescence concentration (CCC). The general trend obtained from these studies showed that the addition of frothers, along with collectors, which also act as frothers during flotation, resulted in finer bubbles and required lower concentrations of frothers, which in turn positively affected the flotation recoveries. In this study, an attempt was made to study fine-sized magnesite in the presence of sodium oleate (NaOL) and five different types of frothers (PPG600, PPG400, BTPG, BDPG, and MIBC). Bubble–particle attachment time with different sized capillary tubes and dynamic froth analysis values in a liquid–air system, along with flotation recoveries in a micro-flotation cell, were interpreted to show possible correlations and provide an optimum bubble/particle size ratio in the presence of different frothers. The increasing demand for critical raw materials such as copper and cobalt highlights the need for efficient beneficiation of low-grade ores. This study investigates a copper–cobalt sulfide ore (0.99% Cu, 0.028% Co) using froth flotation to produce high-grade concentrates. Various types of surfactants are applied in different ways, each serving an essential function such as acting as collectors, frothers, froth stabilizers, depressants, activators, pH modifiers, and more. A series of flotation tests employing different collectors (SIPX, PBX, AERO, DF 507B) and process conditions was conducted to optimize recovery and selectivity. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) was consistently used as the foaming agent, and 700 g/L was used as the slurry density at 25 °C. Dosages of 30 and 100 g/t1 were used in all tests. Notably, adjusting the pH to ~4 using HCl significantly improved cobalt concentrate separation. The optimized flotation conditions yielded concentrates with over 15% Cu and metal recoveries exceeding 80%. Mineralogical characterization confirmed the selective enrichment of target metals in the concentrate. The results demonstrate the potential of this beneficiation approach to contribute to the European Union’s supply of critical raw materials. Full article

Background: The typification of the name Aegilops tauschii Coss. (Poaceae: Triticeae) is revisited. Several authors cited a gathering from Iberia as the locality and Buxbaum as the collector of as the type, but no actual specimens from this collection have been located, nor is there evidence that such a gathering existed. In 1994, van Slageren designated as lectotype an illustration from Buxbaum’s Plantarum minus cognitarum centuria I (1728), which, although original material, is not the only element cited in the protologue. The protologue mentions several gatherings, some of which are represented by identifiable herbarium specimens qualifying as syntypes. Methods: This work is based on the analysis of the protologue of Aegilops tauschii and the study of specimens conserved in several herbaria. According to the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN, Shenzhen Code 2018), an illustration does not hold the same nomenclatural weight as preserved specimens cited in the protologue. Therefore, van Slageren’s lectotypification does not comply with Art. 9.12 of the ICN and must be superseded. Results: The original material includes multiple elements, and a new lectotype is designated from a specimen at PRC from Azerbaijan. Full article
