Understanding the entrepreneurial profile is essential for developing effective regional policies that promote business growth. The path of an entrepreneur is shaped not only by individual decisions but also by the inherent risks of managing a business. This study aims to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurs at the regional level, specifically highlighting the impact of accumulated experience in their fields. Our central hypothesis asserts that entrepreneurial experience significantly influences how business owners perceive and respond to economic challenges. Utilizing survey data from 120 entrepreneurs in Romania’s Center Region (a NUTS 2 area), we reveal that entrepreneurial experience profoundly affects perceptions of key business challenges, such as legislative instability, taxation predictability, governmental support strategies, and access to SME financing. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that entrepreneurs with less than 10 years of experience express greater concerns about these challenges compared to their more seasoned peers. This novel insight highlights the need for tailored policy interventions aimed at enhancing regional economic resilience and fostering entrepreneurial sustainability. By addressing the specific needs of less experienced entrepreneurs, our study contributes to a deeper understanding of how experience shapes business dynamics in the region. Full article

This study examines the development of the digital economy and society in the Republic of Kazakhstan by combining international benchmarking with a context-specific national framework. It highlights the limitations of existing global indices such as DESI, NRI, and EGDI in capturing the structural and institutional dimensions of digital transformation in emerging economies. To address this gap, the study introduces a novel composite metric, the Index of Digital Economy Development (IDED), which integrates five sub-indices: infrastructure, usage, human capital, economic digitization, and transformation effectiveness. The methodology involves comparative index analysis, the construction of the IDED, and statistical validation through a public opinion survey and regression modeling. Key findings indicate that cybersecurity is a critical yet under-represented component of digital development, showing strong empirical correlations with DESI scores in benchmark countries. The results also highlight Kazakhstan’s strengths in digital public services and internet access, contrasted with weaknesses in business digitization and innovation. The proposed IDED offers a more comprehensive and policy-relevant tool for assessing digital progress in transitional economies. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a replicable index structure and providing empirical evidence for the inclusion of cybersecurity in national digital economy assessments. The aim of the study is to assess Kazakhstan’s digital economy development by addressing limitations in global measurement frameworks. Methodologically, it combines comparative index analysis, the construction of a national composite index (IDED), and statistical validation using a regional survey and regression analysis. The findings reveal both strengths and gaps in Kazakhstan’s digital landscape, particularly in cybersecurity and SME digitalization. The IDED introduces an innovative, context-sensitive framework that enhances the measurement of digital transformation in transitional economies. Full article

This study synthesizes the rapidly expanding evidence on how digital technologies reshape international trade, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Guided by two research questions—(RQ1) How do digital tools influence the volume and composition of cross-border trade? and (RQ2) How do these effects vary by countries’ development level and firm size?—we conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review covering 2010–2024. Searches across eight major databases yielded 1857 records; after duplicate removal, title/abstract screening, full-text assessment, and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT 2018) quality checks, 86 peer-reviewed English-language studies were retained. Findings reveal three dominant technology clusters: (1) e-commerce platforms and cloud services, (2) IoT-enabled supply chain solutions, and (3) emerging AI analytics. E-commerce and cloud adoption consistently raise export intensity—doubling it for digitally mature SMEs—while AI applications are the fastest-growing research strand, particularly in East Asia and Northern Europe. However, benefits are uneven: firms in low-infrastructure settings face higher fixed digital costs, and cybersecurity and regulatory fragmentation remain pervasive obstacles. By integrating trade economics with development and SME internationalization studies, this review offers the first holistic framework that links national digital infrastructure and policy support to firm-level export performance. It shows that the trade-enhancing effects of digitalization are contingent on robust broadband penetration, affordable cloud access, and harmonized data-governance regimes. Policymakers should, therefore, prioritize inclusive digital-readiness programs, while business leaders should invest in complementary capabilities—data analytics, cyber-risk management, and cross-border e-logistics—to fully capture digital trade gains. This balanced perspective advances theory and practice on building resilient, equitable digital trade ecosystems. Full article

In an ever-evolving digital environment, organizations must adopt advanced technologies for real-time big data processing to maintain their competitiveness and growth. However, selecting appropriate technologies is a challenge, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study develops a literature review to analyze the methodologies used in the selection of technologies, with a special focus on those associated with the Industry 4.0. Knowledge Development Process-Constructivist (ProKnow-C) method, which was used to build a bibliographic portfolio, examining approximately 3400 articles published between 2005 and 2024, from which 80 were selected for a detailed analysis. The main methodological contributions come from research articles, the ScienceDirect database, the Expert Systems with Applications Journal, studies conducted in Turkey, and publications from the year 2023. The results highlight the predominant use of multi-criteria techniques, emphasizing hybrid approaches that combine various decision-making methodologies. In particular, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and TOPSIS methods were employed in 51.25% of the analyzed cases, either individually or in combination. It is concluded that technology selection should be based on flexible and adaptive approaches tailored to the organizational context, aligning long-term strategic objectives to ensure business sustainability and success. Research concerning green marketing has predominantly focused on consumer behavior. However, aspects such as the extent to which Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) embrace green marketing values, their ability to implement the green marketing mix, and the integration of green marketing into their business culture are critically important. This research aims to provide the 4P (product, price, place, and promotion)-focused green marketing literature with a measurement tool to assess how SMEs implement green marketing practices. The study employed a descriptive design and possesses an exploratory nature. Scale development involved two stages: First, analyses were conducted on a pre-test sample of 159 individuals, revealing the initial scale structure. Second, these analyses were repeated on a larger group of 387 participants. The scale was finalized by confirming the consistency of results across both analyses. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) version 24 were utilized for descriptive statistics and the scale development process. The final validated 12-item scale demonstrates a robust three-factor structure (“Environmental Promotion”, ”Green Packaging”, and ”Green Distribution”), explaining 62.6% of the total variance. The scale exhibits excellent psychometric properties, including high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.912), strong model fit from Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and both convergent and discriminant validity, as indicated by an Average Variance Extracted (AVE) value of 0.605. The scale is deemed applicable to larger populations. Full article

Enterprise architecture (EA) provides a strategic foundation for aligning business processes, IT infrastructure, and organizational strategy, enabling firms to navigate uncertainty and complexity. In developing economies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant challenges in maintaining financial resilience and sustainable growth amidst frequent disruptions. This study investigates how EA-driven change events affect SME financial performance by activating three key adaptive mechanisms: improvisational capability, flexible IT systems, and organizational culture. A novel classification of EA change triggers is proposed to guide adaptive responses. Using survey data from 291 Pakistani SMEs collected during the COVID-19 crisis, the study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to validate the conceptual model. The results indicate that improvisational capability and flexible IT systems significantly enhance financial performance, while the mediating role of organizational culture is statistically insignificant. This study contributes to EA and sustainability literature by integrating a typology of EA triggers with adaptive capabilities theory and testing their effects in a real-world crisis context. The present study examines the role of knowledge management practices in developing business intelligence systems (BISMs) and organizational sustainability (OS) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia. With the underpinning of the knowledge-based view (KBV) in the model of the study, the study employed a deductive approach. Cross-sectional data were gathered from CEOs, senior managers, and business intelligence officers using both offline and online survey tools. Finally, the study utilized 356 usable cases to support its conclusions. The study confirmed a positive effect on knowledge management practices, i.e., knowledge acquisition (KAG) and knowledge dissemination (KDM) on BISMs and OS. On the other hand, the impact of knowledge responsiveness (KRN) on BISMs is negative but positive on OS. Furthermore, BISMs have a positive effect on OS and entrepreneurial leadership (ELP). ELP also positively affects OS. Finally, ELP mediates the relationship between BISMs and OS. The study provides guidelines for SME managers and policymakers on how to invest in knowledge management initiatives to foster a culture of continuous learning and information sharing. The study directly supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which requires the development of the sustainability of SMEs. Finally, the study addresses the gaps in the integrated model, providing empirical evidence from a developing context. Full article

Sustainable tourism has become a strategic imperative, particularly in Bali Island, where tourism drives regional economic growth. In this study, we investigate the mediating role of green service innovation in the relationship between the marketing mix and business performance among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bali Island’s tour and travel sector. We seek to understand how sustainability-oriented innovation contributes to enhancing SME competitiveness and long-term performance. A quantitative approach was adopted, using structured survey data from 387 tour and travel business owners registered with the Bali Provincial Tourism Office. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to assess both the direct effects of the marketing mix on business performance and the indirect effects mediated by green service innovation. The findings indicate that the marketing mix does not directly influence green service innovation or business performance. However, green service innovation significantly enhances business performance, confirming its mediating role. This suggests that traditional marketing strategies are insufficient unless aligned with sustainability-driven innovation. Green service innovation acts as a strategic resource that strengthens business performance in tourism SMEs. We provide theoretical and practical insights into how integrating sustainability into marketing and operational strategies can enhance SMEs’ competitiveness and support sustainable tourism development. Digital competences (DC) are vital for improving employability, especially in tourism, where adapting to technology and communicating effectively are key. Proficiency in digital tools and a second language (SL) significantly enhances organizational performance and competitiveness, supporting sustainable development and innovation in dynamic business environments. This study explores the causal link between digital competences and employability dimensions, including second-language skills, in SMEs within the tourism sector in Quindío and Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Using a quantitative approach, data from 114 employees were collected through a semi-structured survey and analyzed via partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to determine significant relationships. The results reveal that digital competences significantly enhance technological management, occupational experience (OE), anticipation and optimization (AO), and personal flexibility (PF). These skills contribute to sustainable tourism by promoting adaptability, innovation, and inclusive employability. Additionally, second-language proficiency demonstrates strong explanatory power in communication-related aspects. The findings highlight the need for tourism enterprises to prioritize digital upskilling, integrate research and innovation into job functions, strengthen adaptability to organizational changes, and view second-language development as a strategic resource. This study offers valuable insights for designing targeted training strategies aligned with the sector’s dynamic demands and advances the broader discourse on digital literacy in workforce development. The ongoing digitalization of industrial companies requires a structured, strategic integration of digital concepts into business processes. Digital transformation (DT) requires clearly defined roadmaps that align digital technologies with business objectives. Although there are many digital maturity models (DMMs), most are industry-specific and do not address the unique characteristics of individual companies. Even SME-focused models often struggle to close the gap between current and target maturity levels, hindering effective DT implementation. This study examines the existing academic and professional literature on DMMs for SMEs and assesses digital readiness in an industrial context. From these findings, the Dynamic Adaptive Maturity Assessment Model (DAMA-AHP) was developed. It comprises 66 DT elements in six dimensions: People and Expertise, Operability, Organization, Products and Production Processes, Strategy, and Technology. DAMA-AHP incorporates the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which has been enhanced with customizable weighting at both the dimension and element levels. This enables precise alignment with the company’s priorities and the definition of customized target maturity levels that form the basis for a tailored transformation roadmap. Validation through a case study confirmed the practical value of DAMA-AHP in measuring digital maturity and defining strategic DT priorities. It provides a comprehensive, adaptable, and dynamic framework that promotes continuous improvement and sustainable competitiveness of SMEs in the evolving digital economy. Full article

This study investigates the relationships between entrepreneurial leadership skills (ELSs), ethical entrepreneurial leadership (EEL), corporate sustainable development (CSD), and competitive advantage (CA) in SMEs. Drawing on resource-based view theory, we examine whether entrepreneurial capabilities and ethical practices jointly contribute to sustainability and competitive positioning. Data from 312 SME leaders across manufacturing, services, technology, and trading sectors were analyzed using PLS-SEM. Results reveal that ELSs foster EEL (β = 0.684, p < 0.001) and enhance CSD (β = 0.453, p < 0.001). EEL significantly affects CSD (β = 0.527, p < 0.001) and partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial skills and sustainability (indirect effect = 0.361). CSD strongly enhances CA (β = 0.612, p < 0.001). The findings demonstrate that integrating entrepreneurial capabilities with ethical leadership creates foundations for sustainable development and CA in resource-constrained environments. This research extends entrepreneurial leadership theory by showing complementarity between entrepreneurial and ethical orientations, advances sustainability theory by revealing ethical leadership’s mediating role, and enriches RBV by demonstrating how intangible leadership capabilities generate CA when traditional resources are scarce. Practical implications include developing integrated leadership programs and sustainability frameworks for emerging economy SMEs. Full article

Background: The mediating effect of business resilience in the association between digital logistics strategy and competitive advantage is investigated in emerging markets. Given current global events, digital logistics is more than merely a competitive advantage for firms looking for stability and sustainability. Based on the Resource-Based View (RBV), the research aims to explore how digital strategies promote resilience and performance outcomes, particularly for SMEs in turbulent environments. Methods: They used mixed methods. The quantitative data were obtained from 227 Jordanian SMEs using a structured survey, and the qualitative data were from 10 semi-structured interviews with experts in logistics and marketing. Hypothesized relationships were tested through Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and qualitative validation through Thematic Analysis. Results: The results reveal that business resilience is a potent mediator between digital logistics strategies and competitive advantage. Both content marketing and social media marketing contribute to the enhancement of sustainable performance and to decreasing levels of market volatility. Email also has an impact on the sustainability, but does not directly or indirectly affect the volatility. Sustainable performance is thus confirmed to be a major factor for market stability. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the need for resilience-based digital logistics strategies for SMEs in developing economies. Well-directed content and social media marketing support both sustainability and competitive advantage. These findings offer managerial implications for the development of adaptive capacities to achieve long-term performance objectives in uncertain environments. Full article

Corporate sustainability has emerged as a critical imperative for firms navigating volatile markets and ecological constraints, yet the mechanisms linking organizational practices to sustainability outcomes remain underexplored, particularly in developing economies. Drawing on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory, this paper examines how transformational leadership and knowledge sharing synergistically enhance innovation capability, which in turn fosters environmental dynamism and corporate sustainability performance. Using a structured questionnaire within a cross-sectional design to gather data from 140 Moroccan SMEs, data were collected via an online questionnaire from 140 Moroccan SME owners and managers, with hypotheses tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that knowledge sharing, and transformational leadership significantly strengthen innovation capability. Innovation capability further drives environmental dynamism, which positively impacts sustainability performance. These findings advance theory by integrating knowledge-based, leadership, and dynamic capability perspectives into a novel pathway for achieving sustainability goals. The study underscores the necessity for SMEs in developing nations to cultivate leadership that inspires knowledge exchange and adaptive innovation, enabling resilience amid ecological and market shifts. By highlighting these internal drivers, the research offers actionable insights for SMEs and policymakers seeking to align business innovation strategies with sustainability objectives and pro-environmental transformation in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study explores how digital technologies (DTs) drive business model innovation (BMI) in the traditional manufacturing sector of an emerging economy, focusing on the mediating roles of firm agility (FA), absorptive capacity (AC), and the moderating role of market turbulence (MT). Drawing on organizational adaptation theory and the dynamic capability view, the study develops a conceptual model tested through a survey of 479 senior managers from small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in three major industrial cities in Turkey. The results confirm that DTs have a significant positive effect on BMI, with both FA and AC partially mediating this relationship. Additionally, MT strengthens the impact of DTs on FA but does not significantly moderate its effect on AC or BMI. These findings reveal that the effectiveness of digital transformation depends not only on technological investments but also on internal organizational capabilities and external environmental conditions. The study contributes to the digital transformation literature by offering empirical evidence from an underexplored emerging market context and by demonstrating the conditional pathways through which DTs influence innovation. Practical implications highlight the importance of enhancing agility and knowledge integration to translate digital investments into strategic value under turbulent market conditions. Full article

This study explores the intersection of competitiveness in a circular economy and the role of digital innovations through an integrative literature review. Synthesizing quantitative and qualitative research identifies gaps and offers insights on how these trends shape competitive strategies. The review emphasizes three main areas: technological enablers, operational challenges, and the role of policy and collaboration. It highlights the interrelationship among the circular economy, digital innovations, and competitiveness in promoting sustainable practices. The research suggests that policymakers should support small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with financial assistance for digital tool adoption and establish regional digital innovation hubs for technology access and training. Standardized data-sharing protocols are crucial for effective circular economy practices and cybersecurity. Ultimately, the review identifies key research opportunities at the nexus of digital innovations and the circular economy, aiming to enhance theoretical knowledge and inform sustainable business model development.
