Embedded systems in IoT are expected to be run by reliable, resource-efficient software. Devices on the edge are typically required to communicate with central nodes, and in some setups with each other, constituting a distributed system. The Erlang language, favored for its constructs that support building fault-tolerant, distributed systems, offers solutions to these challenges. Its dynamic type system and higher-level abstractions enable fast development, while also featuring tools for building highly available and fault-tolerant applications. To study the viability of using Erlang in embedded systems, we analyze the solutions the language offers, contrasting them with the challenges of developing embedded systems, with a particular focus on resource use. We measure the footprint of the language’s constructs in executing tasks characteristic of end devices, such as gathering, processing and transmitting sensor data. We conduct our experiments with constructs and data of varying sizes to account for the diversity in software complexity of real-world applications. Our measured data can serve as a basis for future research, supporting the design of the software stack for embedded systems. Our results demonstrate that Erlang is an ideal technology for implementing software on embedded systems and a suitable candidate for developing a prototype for a real-world use case. Full article

Currently, approximately 6000 mineral species have been identified, and every year, approximately 100 more are discovered. The discovery of a new mineral has a close relationship with geological heritage. It involves the definition of both the type mineral (the specimen from which the sample used for the description of the new mineral species was obtained) and the type locality (the location where the corresponding specimen was found). All type minerals constitute elements of movable geological heritage and must be kept in a museum or a reference research center. However, not all type localities are recognized as geological heritage sites (geosites), despite their connection to a heritage interest. This article discusses these different considerations regarding type minerals and type localities as geological heritage in a general context. In addition, the situation in the case of Spain is analyzed, which, for various reasons, can serve as a model at the international level. It is concluded that type localities should be considered part of the geological heritage, and that the number of type minerals is always greater than that of type localities. Full article

Biophysical and Social Constraints of Restoring Ecosystem Services in the Border Regions of Tibet, China

Ecosystem restoration represents a promising solution for enhancing ecosystem services and environmental sustainability. However, border regions—characterized by ecological fragility and geopolitical complexity—remain underrepresented in ecosystem service and restoration research. To fill this gap, we coupled spatially explicit models (e.g., InVEST and RUSLE) with scenario analysis to quantify the ecosystem service potential that could be achieved in China’s Tibetan borderlands under two interacting agendas: ecological restoration and border-strengthening policies. Restoration feasibility was evaluated through combining local biophysical constraints, economic viability (via restoration-induced carbon gains vs. opportunity costs), operational practicality, and simulated infrastructure expansion. The results showed that per-unit-area ecosystem services in border counties (particularly Medog, Cona, and Zayu) exceed that of interior Tibet by a factor of two to four. Combining these various constraints, approximately 4–17% of the border zone remains cost-effective for grassland or forest restoration. Under low carbon pricing (US$10 t−1 CO2), the carbon revenue generated through restoration is insufficient to offset the opportunity cost of agricultural production, constituting a major constraint. Habitat quality, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration increase modestly when induced by restoration, but a pronounced carbon–water trade-off emerges. Planned infrastructure reduces restoration benefits only slightly, whereas raising the carbon price to about US$50 t−1 CO2 substantially expands such benefits. These findings highlight both the opportunities and limits of ecosystem restoration in border regions and point to carbon pricing as the key policy lever for unlocking cost-effective restoration. Straw removal is a method used to reduce cadmium (Cd) concentration in contaminated farmland. Experiments in Hunan Province tested different stubble heights (0, 15, 30, 45 cm) in three Cd-polluted paddy fields with different contamination levels. The results showed that lower stubble heights resulted in larger straw biomass and more Cd removed from the field, while the residual biomass and Cd returned to the field decreased accordingly. At stubble heights of 0, 15, 30, and 45 cm, the removed straw biomass accounted for 100%, 69.19%, 48.84%, and 28.17% of the total straw biomass, respectively. The corresponding Cd removal amounts were 12.89, 7.18, 4.18, and 1.83 g ha−1, which constituted 100%, 54.06%, 29.85%, and 12.54% of the total Cd accumulation in straw for the season, respectively. According to the fitted curve, the biomass of returned and removed straw was equal at a stubble height of 31 cm, while at 23 cm, the Cd return and removal amounts were balanced. Rice varieties Huanghuazhan and Nongxiang 42 had better Cd removal but risked grain Cd exceeding limits. Since Cd concentration in straw determines removal efficiency, varieties with high straw Cd accumulation and low grain Cd are more suitable for remediation, rather than high-Cd-accumulating types. This article is a survey, and its aim is to provide a concise introduction to the topic of measures of noncompactness and measures of weak noncompactness in Banach spaces. These measures constitute a useful tool in nonlinear analysis, for example, in studies on the existence of solutions to nonlinear differential and integral equations. Recently, they have also been applied to the analysis of infinite systems of such equations. The Amazon region is home to a remarkable diversity of plant species that are used in traditional medicine and cuisine. This study aimed to evaluate the functional, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the leaves of Allium schoenoprasum, Brugmansia candida (white and pink), and Cyclanthemum bipartitum. Bioactive compounds (L-ascorbic acid, organic acids, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and chlorophylls) were quantified using liquid chromatography. The ABTS and DPPH methods were used to assess the antioxidant capacity. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis was evaluated. The results revealed a high content of L-ascorbic acid (7.6 mg/100 g dry weight) and total carotenoids (509.0 mg/100 g dry weight), as well as high antioxidant capacity (4.5 mmol TE/100 g dry weight) and broad antimicrobial activity in Brugmansia candida ‘pink’. The White variety had the highest concentration of total chlorophylls (1742.8 mg/100 g DW), Cyclanthemum bipartitum had the highest total organic acid content (2814.5 mg/100 g DW), and Allium schoenoprasum had the highest concentration of total phenolic compounds (11,351.6 mg/100 g DW). These results constitute a starting point for future research, emphasizing the potential health risks that certain species may pose. Full article

To accurately assess the effect of different plate thicknesses on the residual stress field of laser shock peened GH3039 superalloy, residual stress measurements were performed on GH3039 alloy plates with thicknesses of 2 mm and 5 mm after laser shock peening (LSP) treatment. Both quasi-static and high strain rate mechanical tests of GH3039 were conducted, and the Johnson-Cook (J-C) constitutive equation for GH3039 alloy at specific strain rates was fitted based on the experimental results. To obtain the parameter C in the J-C constitutive equation of GH3039 alloy under ultra-high strain rates, a modified method was proposed based on LSP experiment and finite element simulation results. Using the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation, numerical simulations and comparative analyses of the residual stress field of GH3039 alloy plates of different thicknesses under LSP were carried out using ABAQUS software. The simulated residual stress fields of laser-shocked GH3039 alloy plates of different thicknesses were in good agreement with the experimental measurements, indicating that the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation can accurately predict the mechanical behavior of GH3039 alloy under ultra-high strain rates. Based on the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation, the effect of different plate thicknesses on the residual stress distribution of laser-shocked GH3039 alloy was studied, along with the underlying mechanisms. The unique distribution characteristics of residual stresses in laser-shocked GH3039 plates with varying thicknesses are primarily attributed to differences in plate bending stiffness and the detrimental coupling effects of reflected tensile waves. Blood-based biomarkers allow monitoring of an individual’s health status and provide insights into metabolic and inflammatory processes in conditions like obesity, cardiovascular, and liver diseases. However, selecting suitable biomarkers and optimizing analytical assays presents challenges, is time-consuming and laborious. Moreover, knowledge of potential sex differences remains incomplete as research is often carried out in men. This study aims at enabling researchers to make informed choices on the type of biomarkers, analytical assays, and dilutions being used. More specifically, we analyzed plasma concentrations of >90 biomarkers using commonly available ELISA or electrochemiluminescence-based multiplex methods, comparing normal weight (BMI < 25; n = 40) with obese (BMI > 30; n = 40) adult blood donors of comparable age. To help choose optimal biomarker sets, we grouped frequently employed biomarkers into biological categories (e.g., adipokines, acute-phase proteins, complement factors, cytokines, myokines, iron metabolism, vascular inflammation), first comparing normal-weight with obese persons, and thereafter exploratively comparing women and men within each BMI group. Many biomarkers linked to chronic inflammation and dysmetabolism were elevated in persons with obesity, including several adipokines, interleukins, chemokines, acute-phase proteins, complement factors, and oxidized LDL. Further exploration suggests sex disparities in biomarker levels within both normal-weight and obese groups. This comprehensive dataset of biomarkers across diverse biological domains constitutes a reference resource that may provide valuable guidance for researchers in selecting appropriate biomarkers and analytical assays for own studies. Previous studies have extensively applied the generalized consolidation theory, which incorporates a two-stress state variable framework, to predict the volumetric behavior of unsaturated expansive soils under varying mechanical stress and matric suction. A key requirement for this approach is a constitutive surface that links the soil void ratio to both net stress and matric suction. A large number of fitting parameters are typically needed to accurately fit a two-variable void ratio surface equation to laboratory test data. In this study, a single-stress state variable framework was adopted to describe the void ratio as a function of effective stress for unsaturated soils. The proposed approach was applied to fit void ratio–effective stress constitutive curves to laboratory test data for two different expansive clays. Additionally, a finite element model coupling variably saturated flow and stress–strain analysis was developed to simulate the volume change behavior of expansive clay subjected to moisture fluctuations. The model utilizes suction stress to compute the effective stress field and incorporates the dependency of soil modulus on volumetric water content based on the proposed void ratio–effective stress relationship. The developed numerical model was validated against a benchmark problem in which a layer of Regina expansive clay was subjected to a constant infiltration rate. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in simulating expansive soil deformations under varying moisture conditions over time. Full article

Sexual health constitutes a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, with direct implications for individual development and the broader social and economic progress of communities. Promoting environments that ensure sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimination, and violence is a key public health priority. Sexuality, in this regard, should be understood as an inherent dimension of human experience, shaped by biological, cultural, cognitive, and ideological factors. Accordingly, sexual health education requires a holistic and multidimensional approach that integrates sociocultural, biographical, and professional perspectives. This study aims to examine the level of knowledge and training in sexual health among nursing students and healthcare professionals, as well as to assess the extent to which sexual health content is incorporated into nursing curricula at Spanish universities. A scoping review was conducted using the Dialectical Structural Model of Care (DSMC) as the theoretical framework. The findings indicate a significant lack of knowledge regarding sexual health among both nursing students and healthcare professionals, largely due to educational and structural limitations. Furthermore, sexual health education remains underrepresented in nursing curricula and is frequently addressed from a narrow, fragmented biomedical perspective. These results highlight the urgent need for the comprehensive integration of sexual health content into nursing education. Strengthening curricular inclusion is essential to ensure the preparation of competent professionals capable of delivering holistic, inclusive, and empowering care in this critical area of health. With the increasing awareness of energy consumption issues, there has been a growing emphasis on energy-saving retrofits for central air-conditioning systems that constitute a significant proportion of energy consumption in buildings. Efficient energy utilization can be achieved by optimizing the modeling of the equipment within the chiller plants of central air-conditioning systems. Traditional modeling approaches have been static and have focused on modeling within narrow time frames when a certain amount of equipment operating data has accumulated, thus prioritizing the precision of the model itself while overlooking the fact that energy-saving retrofits are a long-term process. This study proposes a modeling scheme for the equipment within chiller plants throughout the energy-saving retrofit process. Based on the differences in the amount of available operating data for the equipment and the progress of retrofit implementation, the retrofit process was divided into three stages, each employing different modeling techniques and ensuring smooth transitions between the stages. The equipment within the chiller plants is categorized into two types based on the clarity of their operating characteristics, and two modeling schemes are proposed accordingly. Based on the proposed modeling scheme, chillers and chilled-water pumps were selected to represent the two types of equipment. Real operating data from actual retrofit projects was used to model the equipment and evaluate the accuracy of the model predictions. The results indicate that the models established by the proposed modeling scheme exhibit good accuracy at each stage of the retrofit, with the coefficients of variation (CV) remaining below 6.88%. Furthermore, the prediction accuracy improved as the retrofitting process progressed. The modeling scheme performs better on equipment with simpler and clearer operating characteristics, with a CV as low as 0.67% during normal operation stages. This underscores the potential application of the proposed modeling scheme throughout the energy-saving retrofit process and provides a model foundation for the subsequent optimization of the refrigeration system. Blast mitigation of structures is an important research topic due to increasing intentional and accidental human-induced threats and hazards. This research area is essential to building capabilities in sustaining structural protection, site planning, protective design efficiency, occupant safety, and response and recovery plans. This paper investigates experimental tests and finite element analysis (FEM) of thin A36 steel sheets subjected to blast. Six field blast tests were performed at standoff distances of 300 mm and 500 mm. The explosive charges comprised 334 g of bare Composition B, and the steel sheets were 2 mm thick. The experimental results, derived from the analysis of high-speed camera recordings of the blast events, were compared with FEM simulations conducted using Abaqus®/Explicit version 6.10. Three constitutive material models were considered in these simulations. First, the FEM simulation results were compared with experimental results. It was shown that the FEM analysis provided reliable results and was proven to be robust and cost-effective. Second, an extensive set of 460 additional numerical simulations was carried out as a parametric study involving varying standoff distances and steel sheet thicknesses. The results and methodologies presented in this paper offer valuable and original insights for engineers and researchers aiming to predict damage to steel structures during real detonation events and to design blast-resistant structures. Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to synthesize folate-conjugated poloxamers and develop polymeric micelles for the dermal delivery of irinotecan and alpha-mangostin for the treatment of melanoma using poloxamer 188 and poloxamer 184, which have never been synthesized with folate before. Methods: Poloxamer 188 and poloxamer 184 were synthesized with folate by esterification. The in vitro skin penetration enhancement of irinotecan- and alpha-mangostin-loaded folate-conjugated polymeric micelles was evaluated. The skin penetration pathway of folate-conjugated polymeric micelles was investigated by colocalization of multiple fluorescently labeled particles using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results: Folate-conjugated poloxamer 188 and poloxamer 184 were successfully synthesized. The prepared irinotecan- and alpha-mangostin-loaded folate-conjugated polymeric micelles from poloxamer 188 and poloxamer 184 had particle sizes of approximately 180 and 150 nm, respectively, indicating a positive charge with a narrow size distribution which could be easily taken up into cells. An in vitro skin penetration study revealed that folate-conjugated polymeric micelles from poloxamer 184 significantly enhanced the skin penetration of irinotecan and alpha-mangostin to a greater extent than the solution. CLSM visualization revealed that folate-conjugated polymeric micelles penetrated through the skin by the transfollicular pathway as the major penetration pathway, whereas penetration by the intercluster pathway, transcellular pathway and intercellular pathway constituted a minor pathway. Conclusions: Folate-conjugated poloxamer 184 polymeric micelles are promising candidates for the dermal delivery of anticancer drugs by the transfollicular pathway as the major skin penetration pathway. (1) Background: This article aims to understand the forms and elements through which the inhabitants of the city of Medellin have configured their subjectivity in the context of the application of neoliberal policies in the last two decades. In this way, we can approach the frameworks of understanding that constitute a fundamental part of the individuation processes in which the incorporation of their subjectivities is evidenced in neoliberal contexts that, in the historical process, have been converging with authoritarian, antidemocratic and neoconservative elements. (2) Method: A qualitative approach with a hermeneutic-interpretative paradigm was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 inhabitants of Medellín who were politically identified with right-wing or center-right positions. Data analysis included thematic coding to identify patterns of thought and points of view. (3) Results: Participants associate success with individual effort and see state intervention as an obstacle to development. They reject redistributive policies, arguing that they generate dependency. In addition, they justify authoritarian models of government in the name of security and progress, from a moral superiority, which is related to a negative and stigmatizing perception of progressive sectors and a negative view of the social rule of law and public policies with social sense. (4) Conclusions: The naturalization of merit as a guiding principle, the perception of themselves as morally superior based on religious values that grant a subjective place of certainty and goodness; the criminalization of expressions of political leftism, mobilizations and redistributive reforms and support for policies that establish authoritarianism and perpetuate exclusion and structural inequalities, closes roads to a participatory democracy that enables social and economic transformations. Measuring antimicrobial use (AMU) in animal production can provide useful data for monitoring AMU over time, which will promote antimicrobial resistance (AMR) reduction. This study involved the daily collation and validation of active primary drug sales and prescription data from veterinary outlets and clinics of the Kaduna metropolis. In total, 83.7% of the identified antimicrobials were in the form of oral medication, and most were registered antibiotics (52.8%). Parenteral and topical forms were also identified, with 94% also being antibiotics. The estimated AMU was 282 mg/kg population correction unit (PCU). Poultry represented the most significant population, constituting 99% (31,502,004) of the study population. The class-specific AMU was antibiotics, with 274 mg/kg PCU. The antiprotozoal AMU was 418 mg/kg PCU. The anthelminthic AMU was the highest at 576 mg/kg PCU. This study has provided useful and practical information on the trends in antimicrobial use in animals, with poultry being the most important animal population involved in AMU and oxytetracycline being the most abused antibiotic in animal production. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) should be targeted at poultry populations, with an emphasis on reducing antibiotic use/consumption. Full article
