In this study, the impact of moderate and high CO2 and O2 levels was compared to low and moderate gas combinations during prolonged storage on the quality of Regina sweet cherries harvested in different maturity stages, particularly in terms of decreasing internal browning. Fruits were harvested in two different maturity stages (Light and Dark Mahogany skin color) and stored in CA of 15% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 5% O2; 5% CO2 + 5% O2 and MA of 4 to 5% CO2 + 16 to 17% O2 for 30 and 40 days at 0 °C and 90% RH, followed by a marketing period. After the storage, both maturity stages significantly reduced internal browning, decay, and visual quality losses in CA with 10–15% CO2 and 10% O2. In addition, it preserved luminosity, total soluble solids (TSSs), titratable acidity (TA), and bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and phenols. This treatment also maintained the visual appearance of the sweet cherries, favoring their market acceptance. At the same time, the light red fruits showed a better general quality compared to darker color after the storage. In conclusion, a controlled atmosphere with optimized CO2 and O2 concentrations, together with harvesting with a Light Mahogany external color, represents an effective strategy to extend the shelf life of Regina sweet cherries up to 40 days plus the marketing period, maintaining their physical and sensory quality for export markets. Cone Penetration Tests with pore pressure measurements (CPTu) are widely used in geotechnical site investigations due to their high-resolution profiling capabilities. However, traditional interpretation methods—such as the Soil Behavior Type Index (Ic)—often fail to capture the internal heterogeneity typical of mining tailings deposits. This study presents a machine learning-based approach to enhance stratigraphic interpretation from CPTu data. Four unsupervised clustering algorithms—k-means, DBSCAN, MeanShift, and Affinity Propagation—were evaluated using a dataset of 12 CPTu soundings collected over a 19-year period from an iron tailings dam in Brazil. Clustering performance was assessed through visual inspection, stratigraphic consistency, and comparison with Ic-based profiles. k-means and MeanShift produced the most consistent stratigraphic segmentation, clearly delineating depositional layers, consolidated zones, and transitions linked to dam raising. In contrast, DBSCAN and Affinity Propagation either over-fragmented or failed to identify meaningful structures. The results demonstrate that clustering methods can reveal behavioral trends not detected by Ic alone, offering a complementary perspective for understanding depositional and mechanical evolution in tailings. Integrating clustering outputs with conventional geotechnical indices improves the interpretability of CPTu profiles, supporting more informed geomechanical modeling, dam monitoring, and design. The approach provides a replicable methodology for data-rich environments with high spatial and temporal variability. Full article

Cognitive Screening with the Italian International HIV Dementia Scale in People Living with HIV: A Cross-Sectional Study in the cART Era

Background: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HANDs) continue to be a significant concern, despite the advancements in prognosis achieved through Combination Antiretroviral Therapy (cART). Neuropsychological assessment, recommended by international guidelines for HANDs diagnosis, can be resource-intensive. Brief screening tools, like the International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), are crucial in facilitating initial evaluations. This study aims to assess the Italian IHDS (IHDS-IT) and evaluate its sensitivity and specificity in detecting cognitive impairment in HIV patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 294 patients aged ≥30 years, evaluated at the Immunology Unit of the University of Cagliari. Cognitive function was assessed using the MoCA and IHDS. Laboratory parameters, such as CD4 nadir, current CD4 count, and HIV-RNA levels, were also collected. Statistical analyses included Spearman’s correlation, Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis, and the Youden J statistic to identify the optimal IHDS-IT cut-off for cognitive impairment detection. Results: The IHDS and MoCA scores showed a moderate positive correlation (Spearman’s rho = 0.411, p < 0.0001). ROC analysis identified an IHDS-IT cut-off of ≤9, yielding an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.76, sensitivity of 71.7%, and specificity of 67.2%. At this threshold, 73.1% of patients with MoCA scores below 23 also presented abnormal IHDS scores, highlighting the complementary utility of both cognitive assessment instruments. Conclusions: The IHDS-IT exhibited fair diagnostic accuracy for intercepting cognitive impairment, with a lower optimal cut-off than previously reported. The observed differences may reflect this study cohort’s demographic and clinical characteristics, including advanced age and long-lasting HIV infection. Further, longitudinal studies are necessary to validate these findings and to confirm the proposed IHDS cut-off over extended periods. Full article

High nighttime temperature (HNT) due to asymmetric diurnal warming threatens wheat productivity. This study evaluated the effect of HNT on wheat phenology, physiology, and yield through field and controlled environment experiments in Central Queensland, Australia. Two wheat genotypes, Faraday and AVT#6, were assessed under three sowing dates—1 May (Early), 15 June (Mid), and 1 August (Late)—within the recommended sowing window for the region. In a parallel growth chamber study, the plants were exposed to two nighttime temperature regimes, of 15 °C (normal) and 20 °C (high), with consistent daytime conditions from booting to maturity. Late sowing resulted in shortened vegetative growth and grain filling periods and increased exposure to HNT during the reproductive phase. This resulted in elevated floret sterility, lower grain weight, and up to 40% yield loss. AVT#6 exhibited greater sensitivity to HNT despite maturing earlier. Leaf gas exchange analysis revealed increased nighttime respiration (Rn) and reduced assimilation (A), resulting in higher Rn/A ratio for late-sown crops. The results from controlled environment chambers resembled trends of the field experiment, producing lower grain yield and biomass under HNT. Cumulative nighttime hours above 20 °C correlated more strongly with yield losses than daytime heat. These findings highlight the need for HNT-tolerant genotypes and optimized sowing schedules under future climate scenarios. Full article

Background/Objectives: Maxillofacial silicone prostheses’ long-term color stability remains a challenge. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the color stability of conventional and digital maxillofacial silicone elastomers mixed with nano-sized antimicrobial additives (ZnO nanoparticles and chlorhexidine salt-CHX) at various concentrations over a 10-week period. Methods: A total of nine groups (n = 10) of maxillofacial silicone elastomers were prepared. These included a control group (no additives), conventionally pigmented silicone, digitally pigmented silicone (Spectromatch system), and silicone mixed with ZnO or CHX at 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight. Specimens were fabricated in steel molds and cured at 100 °C for 1 h. Color measurements were performed at baseline and after 1, 4, 6, and 10 weeks using a Minolta Chroma Meter (CIELAB system, ΔE00 formula). Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc tests (α = 0.05). Results: Color changes (ΔE00) ranged from 0.74 to 2.83 across all groups. The conventional pigmented silicone group showed the highest color difference (ΔE00 = 2.83), while the lowest was observed in the ZnO 1% group (ΔE00 = 0.74). Digital silicone and all antimicrobial-modified groups exhibited acceptable color stability (ΔE00 < 3.1). Time significantly affected color difference, with the largest change occurring during the first four weeks (p < 0.05), followed by stabilization. Regression analysis confirmed high color stability over time for all groups except the conventional pigmented group. Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to directly compare digital and conventional pigmentation methods combined with nano-antimicrobials in maxillofacial silicones. Maxillofacial silicone elastomers mixed with up to 5% ZnO or CHX maintained acceptable color stability over 10 weeks. Digital pigmentation is similar to conventional methods. The incorporation of nano-antimicrobials offers significant microbial resistance and improved color retention. Full article

Efficacy of a Novel Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Strain (LP815TM) in Reducing Canine Aggression and Anxiety: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial with Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment

Behavioral issues in domestic dogs represent a significant welfare concern affecting both canines and their caregivers, with prevalence rates reported to range from 34 to 86% across the population. Current treatment options, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine, often present limitations including adverse effects and delayed efficacy. This randomized, placebo-controlled (maltodextrin) study investigated the effects of a novel Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain (LP815TM) on canine behavioral concerns through gut–brain axis modulation. Home-based dogs (n = 40) received either LP815TM (n = 28) or placebo (n = 12) daily for 4 weeks, with behavioral changes assessed using the comprehensive Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and continuous activity monitoring. After the intervention period, dogs receiving LP815TM showed significant improvements in aggression (p = 0.0047) and anxiety (p = 0.0005) compared to placebo controls. These findings were corroborated by objective activity data, which demonstrated faster post-departure settling, reduced daytime sleep, and improved sleep consistency in the treatment group. Throughout >1120 administered doses, no significant adverse events were reported, contrasting favorably with pharmaceutical alternatives. The concordance between our findings and previous research using different L. plantarum strains suggests a consistent biological mechanism, potentially involving GABA production and vagal nerve stimulation. These results indicate that LP815TM represents a promising, safe alternative for addressing common canine behavioral concerns with potential implications for improving both canine welfare and the human–animal bond. Mushroom production is a sustainable practice but requires improvements, such as in Lentinula edodes (Berk) Pegler cultivation, which has high water and labor demands. In this context, this study proposed replacing the traditional primordia induction method by submersion with a water injection method. Two primordia induction methods (submersion and injection) and two cultivation block formats were compared: rectangular cube (2 kg) and cylindrical (3.5 kg). The substrate, composed of eucalyptus sawdust (72%), wheat bran (12.5%), rice bran (12.5%), CaCO3 (1%), and CaSO4 (2%), was inoculated with strain LED 19/11 and incubated for 80 days at 26 ± 5 °C and 85 ± 15% humidity. After this period, the blocks were washed and transferred to the production environment. Fruiting was induced either by submersion or water injection, and production was evaluated over four harvest flushes. The 2 kg blocks had higher yields with submersion (16.62%), while the 3.5 kg blocks responded better to injection (13.01%), showing more homogeneous production. Increasing the substrate quantity contributes to greater harvest stability across production cycles. Water injections proved to be a viable alternative, reducing handling and facilitating large-scale production. The use of this technique demonstrates great importance in reducing water use and also the need for labor in cultivation. Full article

Land use conversion to perennial cropland often degrades the soil structure and fertility, particularly under Mediterranean climatic conditions. This study assessed spatial and temporal dynamics of soil properties and tree responses to 3-year repeated mature compost additions in a citrus orchard. Digital soil mapping revealed strong baseline heterogeneity in texture, CEC, and Si pools. Compost application markedly increased total organic C and N levels, aggregate stability, and pH with noticeable changes after the first amendment, whereas a limited C storage potential was found following further additions. NDVI values of tree canopies monitored over a 3-year period showed significant time-dependent changes not correlated with the soil fertility variables, thus suggesting that multiple interrelated factors affect plant responses. The non-crystalline amorphous Si/total amorphous Si (iSi:Siamor) ratio is here proposed as a novel indicator of pedogenic alteration in disturbed agroecosystems. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring organic farming strategies to site-specific conditions and reinforce the value to combine C and Si pool analysis for long-term soil fertility assessment. The purpose of this work was to study the effects of lactoferrin (Lf) on acute (days 3 and 15) and early-delayed (day 30) changes in the dentate gyrus of mouse hippocampus caused by whole-body gamma-irradiation. Male C57BL/6 mice received Lf (4 mg per mouse, i.p. injection) immediately after whole-body gamma-irradiation at a dose of 7.5 Gy from a 60Co source. The effect of Lf on mouse behavior was evaluated using “Open field” and “Elevated plus-maze” tests. The proportion of cells with DNA replication was determined by 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation (thymidine analog) and detected by a click reaction with azide Alexa Fluor 568. Lf treatment increased animal survival during the experiment (30 days), compensated for radiation-induced body weight loss, and prevented suppression of motor and exploratory activities. A pronounced anti-radiation effect of Lf on mouse brain cells has been demonstrated. A single injection of the protein allowed preserving 2-fold more proliferating cells and immature neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus of irradiated animals during the acute period of post-radiation injury development. Real-World Effectiveness of Rosuvastatin–Ezetimibe Single Pill (Rovazet®) in Korean Dyslipidemia Patients

Background: Fixed-dose combinations of rosuvastatin and ezetimibe are increasingly used in clinical practice, but real-world data on their effectiveness and safety in large populations remain limited. Methods: This prospective, single-group, open-label, non-interventional observational study was conducted in the Republic of Korea to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Rovazet® (a fixed-dose combination of rosuvastatin and ezetimibe). Patients were prospectively enrolled from 235 institutions (50 general hospitals and 185 private clinics) as part of routine clinical practice over a five-year period. Lipid profiles and medication compliance questionnaire results were collected at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks of treatment. Results: A total of 5527 patients with dyslipidemia, the majority were men (53.0%), and the mean age was 60.4 years. Rovazet® significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) by 23.5% at 12 weeks (from 117.47 ± 50.65 mg/dL to 81.14 ± 38.20 mg/dL; p < 0.0001) and by 27.4% at 24 weeks (from 117.47 ± 50.65 mg/dL to 74.52 ± 33.36 mg/dL; p < 0.0001). Total cholesterol was significantly reduced by 17.7% at 12 weeks and by 19.8% at 24 weeks. Rovazet® treatment reduced triglycerides by 4.1% at 12 weeks and by 7.2% at 24 weeks. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased by 4.5% at 12 weeks and by 7.9% at 24 weeks following Rovazet® treatment. These changes in lipid profiles were consistent, regardless of cardiovascular risk profiles. By 24 weeks of treatment with Rovazet®, 91.8% of patients had reached their target LDL-C goals. Adverse drug reactions were reported in 2.81% of patients, most of which were minor, indicating that Rovazet® was well tolerated. Conclusions: Rovazet® was effective in improving lipid profiles and well tolerated in Korean adults with dyslipidemia. Full article

The gyroid minimal surface is one type of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS). TPMS is a minimal surface replicated in the three main directions of the Cartesian coordinate system. The minimal surface is a surface stretched between two objects, known as the smallest possible area (e.g., a soap bubble with a saddle shape stretched between two parallel circles). The complicated shape of the TPMS makes its production possible only by additive methods (3D printing). This article presents the results of experimental studies on heat transfer and flow resistance in a heat exchanger made of stainless steel. The heat exchange surface, a TPMS gyroid, separates two working media: hot and cold water. The water flow rate was varied in the range from 8 kg/h to 25 kg/h (Re = 246–1171). The water temperature at the inlet to the exchanger was maintained at a constant level of 8.8 ± 0.3 °C and 49.5 ± 0.5 °C for cold and hot water, respectively. The effect of water flow rate on the change in its temperature, the heat output of the exchanger, the average heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, and overall resistance factor was presented. Background: Congenital diarrhea is persistent diarrhea that manifests during the neonatal period. Mutations in DGAT1, which is crucial for triglyceride synthesis and lipid absorption in the small intestine, are causal factors for congenital diarrhea. In this study, we aimed to determine the value of tissue RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) for assisting with the clinical diagnosis of some genetic variants of uncertain significance. Methods: We clinically evaluated a patient with watery diarrhea, vomiting, severe malnutrition, and total parenteral nutrition dependence. Possible pathogenic variants were detected using whole-exome sequencing (WES). RNA-seq was utilized to explore the transcriptional alterations in DGAT1 variants identified by WES with unknown clinical significance, according to the American College of Medical Genetics guidelines. Systemic examinations, including endoscopic and histopathological examinations of the intestinal mucosa, were conducted to rule out other potential diagnoses. Results: We successfully diagnosed a patient with congenital diarrhea and protein-losing enteropathy caused by a DGAT1 mutation and reviewed the literature of 19 cases of children with DGAT defects. The missense mutation c.620A>G, p.Lys207Arg located in exon 15, and the intronic mutation c.1249-6T>G in DGAT1 were identified by WES. RNA-seq revealed two aberrant splicing events in the DGAT1 gene of the patient’s small intestinal tissue. Both variants lead to loss-of-function consequences and are classified as pathogenic variants of congenital diarrhea. Conclusions: Rare DGAT1 variants were identified as pathogenic evidence of congenital diarrhea, and the detection of tissue-specific mRNA splicing and transcriptional effects can provide auxiliary evidence. Exploring the Potential of Nitrogen Fertilizer Mixed Application to Improve Crop Yield and Nitrogen Partial Productivity: A Meta-Analysis

Slow-release nitrogen fertilizers enhance crop production and reduce environmental pollution, but their slow nitrogen release may cause insufficient nitrogen supply in the early stages of crop growth. Mixed nitrogen fertilization (MNF), combining slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with urea, is an effective way to increase yield and income and improve nitrogen fertilizer efficiency. This study used urea alone (Urea) and slow-release nitrogen fertilizer alone (C/SRF) as controls and employed meta-analysis and a random forest model to assess MNF effects on crop yield and nitrogen partial factor productivity (PFPN), and to identify key influencing factors. Results showed that compared with urea, MNF increased crop yield by 7.42% and PFPN by 8.20%, with higher improvement rates in Northwest China, regions with an average annual temperature ≤ 20 °C, and elevations of 750–1050 m; in soils with a pH of 5.5–6.5, where 150–240 kg·ha−1 nitrogen with 25–35% content and an 80–100 day release period was applied, and the blending ratio was ≥0.3; and when planting rapeseed, maize, and cotton for 1–2 years. The top three influencing factors were crop type, nitrogen rate, and soil pH. Compared with C/SRF, MNF increased crop yield by 2.44% and had a non-significant increase in PFPN, with higher improvement rates in Northwest China, regions with an average annual temperature ≤ 5 °C, average annual precipitation ≤ 400 mm, and elevations of 300–900 m; in sandy soils with pH > 7.5, where 150–270 kg·ha−1 nitrogen with 25–30% content and a 40–80 day release period was applied, and the blending ratio was 0.4–0.7; and when planting potatoes and rapeseed for 3 years. The top three influencing factors were nitrogen rate, crop type, and average annual precipitation. In conclusion, MNF should comprehensively consider crops, regions, soil, and management. This study provides a scientific basis for optimizing slow-release nitrogen fertilizers and promoting the large-scale application of MNF in farmland. Full article

Microvascular, Biochemical, and Clinical Impact of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Recalcitrant Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes and are often difficult to treat. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been proposed as an adjunctive treatment to promote healing, but its long-term clinical and biological effects remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of HBOT on systemic biomarkers, local microvasculature, and clinical outcomes in patients with DFUs. Methods: In this non-randomized prospective study, 20 patients with ischemic DFUs were followed over a 36-month period. Fourteen received HBOT in addition to standard care, while six received standard care alone. Clinical outcomes—including DFU resolution, recurrence, lower extremity amputation (LEA), and mortality—were assessed alongside systemic inflammatory and angiogenic biomarkers and wound characteristics at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, and 36 months. CD31 immunostaining was performed on available tissue samples. Results: The two groups were comparable at baseline (mean age 62 ± 12 years; diabetes duration 18 ± 9 years). At 3 months, the HBOT group showed significant reductions in erythrocyte sedimentation rate and DFU size (p < 0.05), with downward trends observed in C-reactive protein (CRP), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and placental growth factor (PlGF), and an increase in stromal-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF1-α). No significant changes were observed in the control group. CD31+ microvessel density appeared to increase in HBOT-treated DFU tissue after one month, although the sample size was limited. Patients receiving HBOT had lower rates of LEA and mortality, improved wound healing, and sustained outcomes over three years. DFU recurrence rates were similar between groups. Conclusions: HBOT was associated with improved wound healing and favorable biomarker profiles in patients with treatment-resistant ischemic DFUs. While these findings are encouraging, the small sample size and non-randomized design limit their generalizability, highlighting the need for larger, controlled studies. Full article

Elevated levels of atherogenic lipoproteins are known to be associated with an increased risk of incident and recurrent cardiovascular events. Knowing that the immediate post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) period is associated with the maximum risk of recurrent events, the gradual escalation of therapy allows the patient to remain above the targets during the most vulnerable period. In addition, the percentage of lipid-lowering levels for each class of drugs is predictable and has a ceiling. Hence, it is prudent to immediately start with a combination of lipid-lowering drugs following ACS according to the baseline lipid levels. Multiple studies with injectable lipid-lowering agents (PCSK9 inhibitors) such as EVOPACS, PACMAN MI, and HUYGENS MI have shown the feasibility of achieving LDL-C goals by day 28 and beneficial plaque modification in non-infarct-related coronary arteries. Recently, a study from India demonstrated that an upfront triple combination of oral lipid-lowering agents was able to achieve LDL-C goals in a majority of patients in the early post-ACS period. This notion is also supported by a few recent lipid-lowering guidelines advocating for an upfront dual combination of a high-intensity statin and ezetimibe following ACS. Henceforth, the goal should not only be the achievement of lipid targets but also their early achievement. However, the impact of this strategy on long-term cardiovascular outcomes is yet to be ascertained. Full article
