Factors Associated with Functional Outcome Following Acute Ischemic Stroke Due to M1 MCA/ICA Occlusion in the Extended Time Window

Introduction: A validated clinical decision tool predictive of favorable functional outcomes following endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains elusive. We performed a retrospective case series of patients at our regional Comprehensive Stroke Center, over a four-year period, who have undergone EVT to elucidate patient characteristics and factors associated with a favorable functional outcome after EVT. Methods: We reviewed all cases of EVT at our institution between February 2018 and February 2022 in the extended time window from 6–24 h. Demographic, clinical, imaging, and procedure co-variates were included. A favorable clinical outcome was defined as a modified Rankin scale of 0–2. We included patients with M1 or internal carotid artery occlusion treated with EVT within 6–24 h after symptom onset. We used a univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify patient factors associated with a favorable clinical outcome at 90 days. Results: Our study included evaluation of 121 patients who underwent EVT at our comprehensive stroke center. Our analysis demonstrates that a higher recanalization score based on the modified Thrombolysis In Cerebral Infarction (mTICI) scale (2B-3) was a strong indicator of a favorable outcome (OR 7.33; CI 2.06–26.07; p = 0.0021). Our data also showed that a higher baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (p = 0.0095) and the presence of pre-existing hypertension (p = 0.0035) may also be predictors of an unfavorable outcome (mRS > 2) per our multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Patients without pre-existing hypertension had more favorable outcomes following EVT in the expanded time window. This is consistent with other multicenter data in the expanded time window that demonstrates greater odds of a poor outcome with elevated pre-, peri-, and post-endovascular-treatment blood pressure. Our data also demonstrate that the mTICI score is a strong predictor of favorable outcome, even after controlling for other variables. A lower baseline NIHSS at the time of thrombectomy may also indicate a favorable outcome. Furthermore, the presence of clinical or radiographic mismatch based on the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) and NIHSS per DAWN and DEFUSE-3 criteria did not emerge as a predictor of favorable outcome, which is congruent with recent randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. Zoological environments aim to promote natural behaviours and optimal welfare conditions. Over the past decade, research on the use of artificial ultraviolet-B (UV-B) exposure has improved vitamin D3 levels and reduced incidences of metabolic bone disease in diurnal primates; however, this has not been investigated in nocturnals. Aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis), nocturnal lemurs often housed indoors in zoos with little to no exposure to natural sunlight, have been reported to have low vitamin D3 levels. This study aims to investigate the impacts of artificial UV-B as a supplemental healthcare strategy for aye-ayes, examining its influences on vitamin D3 levels and positional sleeping behaviour. The 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 (25OHD3) blood levels were tested before and after exposure to different levels of artificial UV-B and heat sources. Statistical analysis showed no correlation between UV-B and 25OHD3 at group parameter levels. However, one individual showed a positive correlation. Sleeping position duration analysis showed a potential basking behaviour with the use of increased ear exposure and other thermoregulatory responses. Despite representing 8.06% of the European captive aye-aye population, these findings highlight the need for further research on vitamin D3 parameters and responses to UV-B to optimise captive conditions and support the species’ long-term health. Different Responses to Salinity of Pythium spp. Causing Root Rot on Atriplex hortensis var. rubra Grown in Hydroponics

Atriplex hortensis var. rubra (red orache, RO) is a halotolerant species rich in nutraceutical compounds, which makes it a valuable crop for human nutrition. This plant could also be exploited for phytoremediation of contaminated soil and wastewater, and for saline aquaponics. A root rot disease was observed on hydroponically grown RO plants, caused by Pythium deliense and Pythium Cluster B2a sp. Identification was based on morphology, molecular analysis (ITS and COI), and phylogenetic analysis. We assessed disease severity in plants grown in a growth chamber with nutrient solutions containing different NaCl concentrations (0, 7, and 14 g L−1 NaCl). In vitro growth at different salinity levels and temperatures was also evaluated. Both Pythium species were pathogenic but showed different responses. Pythium deliense was significantly more virulent than Pythium Cluster B2a sp., causing a steady reduction in root dry weight (RDW) of 70% across all salinity levels. Pythium Cluster B2a sp. reduced RDW by 50% at 0 and 7 g L−1 NaCl while no symptoms were observed at 14 g L−1 NaCl. Pythium deliense grew best at 7 and 14 g L−1 NaCl, while Pythium Cluster B2a sp. growth was reduced at 14 g L−1 NaCl. Both pathogens had an optimum temperature of 30 °C. This is the first report of Pythium spp. causing root rot on RO grown hydroponically. The effective use of halophytic crops must consider pathogen occurrence and fitness in saline conditions. The increasing demand for critical raw materials such as copper and cobalt highlights the need for efficient beneficiation of low-grade ores. This study investigates a copper–cobalt sulfide ore (0.99% Cu, 0.028% Co) using froth flotation to produce high-grade concentrates. Various types of surfactants are applied in different ways, each serving an essential function such as acting as collectors, frothers, froth stabilizers, depressants, activators, pH modifiers, and more. A series of flotation tests employing different collectors (SIPX, PBX, AERO, DF 507B) and process conditions was conducted to optimize recovery and selectivity. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) was consistently used as the foaming agent, and 700 g/L was used as the slurry density at 25 °C. Dosages of 30 and 100 g/t1 were used in all tests. Notably, adjusting the pH to ~4 using HCl significantly improved cobalt concentrate separation. The optimized flotation conditions yielded concentrates with over 15% Cu and metal recoveries exceeding 80%. Mineralogical characterization confirmed the selective enrichment of target metals in the concentrate. The results demonstrate the potential of this beneficiation approach to contribute to the European Union’s supply of critical raw materials. Full article

Conventional melanoma is exceedingly rare in the pediatric population, particularly among prepubescent children, and its diagnosis and management necessitate a multidisciplinary approach. The objective of this present report is to delineate the diagnostic pathway and therapeutic management of a 4-year-old girl with conventional melanoma, with particular focus on the molecular context. A pigmented lesion located on the auricle was surgically excised, and subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the diagnosis of malignant melanoma (pT3b). Radiologic investigations revealed no evidence of metastatic disease, and comprehensive genetic testing utilizing next-generation sequencing (NGS) identified no pathogenic variants in the germline genes examined, nor in the BRAF, NRAS, KRAS, and TP53 genes within the excised lesion. The patient remains in good general health. This case report adds to the limited body of literature on melanoma in pediatric patients and underscores the importance of thorough diagnostic evaluation in this age group. Full article

Botrytis cinerea is a highly versatile pathogenic fungus, causing significant damage across a wide range of plant species. A central focus of this review is the recent advances made through proteomics, an advanced molecular tool, in understanding the mechanisms of B. cinerea infection. Recent advances in mass spectrometry-based proteomics—including LC-MS/MS, iTRAQ, MALDI-TOF, and surface shaving—have enabled the in-depth characterization of B. cinerea subproteomes such as the secretome, surfactome, phosphoproteome, and extracellular vesicles, revealing condition-specific pathogenic mechanisms. Notably, in under a decade, the proportion of predicted proteins experimentally identified has increased from 10% to 52%, reflecting the rapid progress in proteomic capabilities. We explore how proteomic studies have significantly enhanced our knowledge of the fungus secretome and the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs), which play key roles in pathogenesis, by identifying secreted proteins—such as pH-responsive elements—that may serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. These technologies have also uncovered fine regulatory mechanisms across multiple levels of the fungal proteome, including post-translational modifications (PTMs), the phosphomembranome, and the surfactome, providing a more integrated view of its infection strategy. Moreover, proteomic approaches have contributed to a better understanding of host–pathogen interactions, including aspects of the plant’s defensive responses. Furthermore, this review discusses how proteomic data have helped to identify metabolic pathways affected by novel, more environmentally friendly antifungal compounds. A further update on the advances achieved in the field of proteomics discovery for the organism under consideration is provided in this paper, along with a perspective on emerging tools and future developments expected to accelerate research and improve targeted intervention strategies. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the immune system attacking the central nervous system, leading to demyelination and neurodegeneration. This work investigates the relationship between specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) polymorphisms and MS, aiming to reveal the immunogenetic background of this disease for more individualized management approaches. This study employed a case–control design, analyzing HLA allele frequencies in 179 MS patients and 200 control subjects using next-generation sequencing, The key findings indicate significant associations between several HLA Class I and II alleles and MS, including HLA-B*35:03:01:03, HLA-C*04:01:01:14, HLA-DRB1*15:01:01:26, and HLA-DQA1*05:05:01:02. These findings emphasize the critical role of HLA molecules in MS Romanian patients. Full article

Tea Polyphenols Mitigate TBBPA-Induced Renal Injury Through Modulation of ROS-PI3K/AKT-NF-κB Signalling in Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely utilised brominated flame retardant, demonstrates toxicological effects in aquatic organisms. Tea polyphenols (TPs), natural compounds found in tea leaves, exhibit both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The kidney is one of the major metabolic organs in common carp and serves as a target organ for toxic substances. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of TPs in mitigating TBBPA-induced nephrotoxicity in common carp. Common carp were exposed to 0.5 mg/L TBBPA in water and/or fed a diet supplemented with 1 g/kg TPs for 14 days. In vitro, primary renal cells were treated with 60 μM TBBPA and/or 2.5 μg/L TPs for 24 h. Methods included histopathology, TUNEL assay for apoptosis, ROS detection, and molecular analyses. Antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT) and inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) were quantified using ELISA kits. Results showed that TBBPA induced oxidative stress, and activated the ROS-PI3K/AKT-NF-κB pathway, thereby resulting in inflammatory responses. TBBPA upregulated apoptosis-related genes (Caspase-3, Bax, and Bcl-2) and induced apoptosis. TBBPA upregulated the expression of RIPK3/MLKL, thereby exacerbating necroptosis. TPs intervention significantly mitigated these effects by reducing ROS, suppressing NF-κB activation, and restoring antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT). Moreover, TPs attenuated apoptosis and necrosis in the carp kidney, thereby enhancing the survival ability and immunity of common carp. Full article

Mechanical friction offers a frequent approach for sustainable energy harvesting, as it can be captured and transformed into electricity by means of the triboelectric phenomenon. Theoretically, this electricity may subsequently be employed to drive electrochemical water purification processes. Herein, the experimental results confirm that the SiC particles effectively trigger the tribocatalytic decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). During the tribocatalytic decomposition of dye, mechanical friction is generated at the contact surface between the tribocatalyst and a custom-fabricated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) rotating disk, under varying conditions of stirring speed, temperature, and pH value. Hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals are confirmed as the dominant reactive species participating in tribocatalytic dye decomposition, as demonstrated by reactive species inhibition experiments. Furthermore, the SiC particles demonstrate remarkable reusability, even after being subjected to five consecutive recycling processes. The exceptional tribocatalytic performance of SiC particles makes them potentially applicable in water purification by harnessing environmental friction energy. Full article

With the increasing size of datasets in data mining applications, feature selection has become critical for enhancing classification accuracy and reducing computational complexity. In this study, a novel binary feature selection algorithm, called bWSO-log, is proposed based on the White Shark Optimizer (WSO). Unlike the commonly used S-shaped and V-shaped transfer functions in the literature, the WSO algorithm is converted into a binary form for the first time using a logarithmic transfer function. The performance of the proposed method was tested on nineteen benchmark datasets and compared with eight widely used metaheuristic algorithms. The results show that the bWSO-log algorithm demonstrates superior or competitive performance in terms of classification accuracy and the number of selected features. These findings reveal the effectiveness of the proposed logarithmic function and highlight the potential of WSO-based binary optimization in feature selection problems. Full article

Generic and consistent formulations for measurement of the backscattering cross section (σbs) and the volume backscattering coefficient (sv) using broadband pulse compression and narrowband echo integration are derived, for small- and finite-amplitude sound propagation. The theory applies to backscattering operation of echosounders and sonars in general, with focus on fisheries acoustics. Formally consistent mathematical relationships for broadband and narrowband operation of such instruments are established that ensure consistency with the underlying power budget equations on average-power form, bridging a gap in prior literature. The formulations give full flexibility in choice of transmit signals and reference signals for pulse compression. Generic and general criteria for quantitative consistency between broadband and narrowband operation are derived, establishing new knowledge and analysis tools. These criteria become identical for small- and finite-amplitude sound propagation. In addition to general criteria, two special cases are considered, relevant for actual operation scenarios. The criteria serve to test and evaluate the extent to which the methods used in broadband pulse compression and narrowband echo integration operating modes are correct and consistent, and to identify and reduce experienced discrepancies between such methods. These are topics of major concern for quantitative acoustic stock assessment, underlying national and international fisheries quota regulations. Full article

Due to the complex spatial structure, dense tree distribution, and narrow passages in orchard environments, traditional path planning algorithms often struggle with large path deviations, frequent turning, and reduced navigational safety. In order to overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a hybrid path planning algorithm based on improved D* Lite for narrow forest orchard environments. The proposed approach enhances path feasibility and improves the robustness of the navigation system. The algorithm begins by constructing a 2D grid map reflecting the orchard layout and inflates the tree regions to create safety buffers for reliable path planning. For global path planning, an enhanced D* Lite algorithm is used with a cost function that jointly considers centerline proximity, turning angle smoothness, and directional consistency. This guides the path to remain close to the orchard row centerline, improving structural adaptability and path rationality. Narrow passages along the initial path are detected, and local replanning is performed using a Hybrid A* algorithm that accounts for the kinematic constraints of a differential tracked robot. This generates curvature-continuous and directionally stable segments that replace the original narrow-path portions. Finally, a gradient descent method is applied to smooth the overall path, improving trajectory continuity and execution stability. Field experiments in representative orchard environments demonstrate that the proposed hybrid algorithm significantly outperforms traditional D* Lite and KD* Lite-B methods in terms of path accuracy and navigational safety. The average deviation from the centerline is only 0.06 m, representing reductions of 75.55% and 38.27% compared to traditional D* Lite and KD* Lite-B, respectively, thereby enabling high-precision centerline tracking. Moreover, the number of hazardous nodes, defined as path points near obstacles, was reduced to five, marking decreases of 92.86% and 68.75%, respectively, and substantially enhancing navigation safety. These results confirm the method’s strong applicability in complex, constrained orchard environments and its potential as a foundation for efficient, safe, and fully autonomous agricultural robot operation. Chickpea is a highly weed-prone crop with limited herbicide options and high labor demands, raising the following question: Can fall-planted legume–cereal cover crops (CCs) improve soil properties while reducing herbicide use and manual weeding pressure? To explore this, we evaluated the effect of fall-planted winter rye (WR) alone in 2021 and mixed with hairy vetch (HV) in 2022 and 2023 at Randolph farm in Petersburg, Virginia. The objectives were two-fold: (a) to examine the effect of CCs on soil properties using monthly growth dynamics and biomass harvested from fifteen 0.25 m2-quadrants and (b) to evaluate the efficiency of five termination methods: (1) green manure (GM); (2) GM plus pre-emergence herbicide (GMH); (3) burn (BOH); (4) crimp mulch (CRM); and (5) mow-mulch (MW) in suppressing weeds in chickpea fields. Weed distribution, particularly nutsedge, was patchy and dominant on the eastern side. Growth dynamics followed an exponential growth rate in fall 2022 (R2 ≥ 0.994, p < 0.0002) and a three-parameter sigmoidal curve in 2023 (R2 ≥ 0.972, p < 0.0047). Biomass averaged 55.8 and 96.9 t/ha for 2022 and 2023, respectively. GMH consistently outperformed GM in weed suppression, though GM was not significantly different from no-till systems by the season’s end. Kabuli-type chickpeas under GMH had significantly higher yields than desi types. Pooled data fitted well to a three-parametric logistic curve, predicting half-time to 50% weed coverage at 35 (MM), 38 (CRM), 40 (BOH), 46 (GM), and 53 (GMH) days. Relapses of CCs were consistent in no-till systems, especially BOH and MW. Although soil properties improved, CCs alone did not significantly suppress weed. Full article

For high-voltage signal detection applications, an auto-zero and chopper operational amplifier (OPA) is proposed in this paper. With the auto-zero and chopper technique, the OPA adopts an eight-channel Ping-Pong mechanism to reduce the high-frequency ripple and glitch generated by chopper modulation. The main transconductor effectively suppresses low-frequency noise and offset by combining input coarse and output fine auto-zero. A common-mode voltage tracking circuit is presented to ensure constant gate-source and gate-substrate voltages of the chopper, which reduces the charge injection caused by threshold voltage drift of their transistors and improves output signal resolution. The OPA is implemented using CMOS 180 nm BCD process. The post-simulation results show that the unit gain bandwidth (UGB) is 2.5 MHz and common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) is 137 dB when the power supply voltage is 5–55 V. The noise power spectral density (PSD) is 6.6 nV/√Hz, and the offset is about 47 µV. The overall circuit consumes current of 960 µA. Full article

Assessment of Ultrasound-Controlled Diagnostic Methods for Thyroid Lesions and Their Associated Costs in a Tertiary University Hospital in Spain

Background/Objectives: Accurate diagnosis of thyroid cancer is critical but challenging due to overlapping ultrasound (US) features of benign and malignant nodules. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of non-invasive and minimally invasive US techniques, including B-mode US, shear wave elastography (SWE), color Doppler, superb microvascular imaging (SMI), and TI-RADS, in patients with suspected thyroid lesions and to assess their reliability and cost effectiveness compared with fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. Methods: A prospective, single-center study (October 2023–February 2025) enrolled 300 patients with suspected thyroid cancer at a Spanish tertiary hospital. Of these, 296 patients with confirmed diagnoses underwent B-mode US, SWE, Doppler, SMI, and TI-RADS scoring, followed by US-guided FNA and Bethesda System cytopathology. Lasso-penalized logistic regression and a bootstrap analysis (1000 replicates) were used to develop diagnostic models. A utility function was used to balance diagnostic reliability and cost. Results: Thyroid cancer was diagnosed in 25 patients (8.3%). Elastography combined with SMI achieved the highest diagnostic performance (Youden index: 0.69; NPV: 97.4%; PPV: 69.1%), outperforming Doppler-only models. Intranodular vascularization was a significant risk factor, while peripheral vascularization was protective. The utility function showed that, when prioritizing cost, elastography plus SMI was cost effective (α < 0.716) compared with FNA. Conclusions: Elastography plus SMI offers a reliable, cost-effective diagnostic rule for thyroid cancer. The utility function aids clinicians in balancing reliability and cost. SMI and generalizability need to be validated in higher prevalence settings. Full article
