Dietary Fats Substitution and Blood Pressure Levels: A Longitudinal Study in Mexican Adults

Background: Dietary patterns impact blood pressure (BP) levels, but the potential impact of replacing specific types of fats with proteins or carbohydrates, in isocaloric models, on BP remains unclear. Objective: This study evaluates the longitudinal association between the substitution of different types of fats with proteins or carbohydrates and changes in BP in a Mexican population. Methods: We analyzed data from 1448 adults (mean age at baseline: 45 years; 73.3% women) from the Health Workers Cohort Study, followed over 13 years. Trained personnel measured systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure following standard procedures and techniques at baseline and follow-up. Macronutrient intake was assessed with a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) for hypertension and fixed-effects linear regression for BP were conducted using isocaloric substitution models. Each estimate reflects the effect of a 3% energy substitution of specific fats for carbohydrates or proteins. Results: Substituting 3% of energy intake of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) in place of vegetable protein (β = −2.94, 95% CI: −5.02, −0.86), animal protein (β = −2.68, 95% CI: −4.73, −0.63), low glycemic index (LGI) carbohydrates (β = −2.63, 95% CI: −4.40, −0.86), and high glycemic index (HGI) carbohydrates (β = −2.52, 95% CI: −4.31, −0.74) was associated with a significant reduction in SBP. Substituting 3% of the energy intake of PUFA in place of different types of carbohydrates was associated with lower odds of hypertension. PUFA was not associated with changes in DBP. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that exchanging PUFA for carbohydrates or proteins is associated with reduced SBP and a lower risk of hypertension, highlighting the importance of macronutrient composition independent of total energy intake and other fat types, which may have a substantial impact at the population level. Background: This study aimed to compare whether a super bolus (SB) is a more efficient strategy than a normal bolus (NB) for high glycemic index (h-GI) meals in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods: A randomized, double-blind, crossover trial with an allocation ratio of 1:1, registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04019821). 72 children aged 10–18 years with T1D > 1 year, and on insulin pump therapy > 3 months were included. As an intervention, they ate a h-GI breakfast for the two following days and receive a prandial insulin bolus either in the form of SB or NB. Results: The SB group had lower glucose values during the observation time and lower glucose levels in 90th min (primary end point). The median time in range was also higher after SB. At the same time, more hypoglycemic episodes and a higher time below range were noted in this group. Almost 90% of them were the threshold value for initiating treatment for hypoglycemia and occurred near the end of observation period. More hyperglycemic episodes and over twice as much time in hyperglycemia were noted after NB. Conclusions: Super bolus is an effective strategy to avoid postprandial hyperglycemia but the basal insulin suspension should be longer to avoid hypoglycemia (f.ex. 3 h). Full article

A new mineral, hanauerite, ideally AgHgSI, was found in the oxidation zone of Ag- and Hg-bearing ores at two old, abandoned mines in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. In a holotype specimen originating from the Schöne Aussicht Mine, Dernbach, Westerwald, it is associated with plumbogummite–hinsdalite series of minerals and goethite. In cotype from the Friedrichssegen Mine, Bad Ems, it is associated with perroudite, goethite, and quartz. At both localities, hanauerite occurs as a prismatic crystal up to 0.15 mm long and up to 0.02 mm thick. The mineral is yellow, transparent, with an adamantine lustre. It is brittle, and cleavage was not observed. The calculated density values are 6.671 and 6.575 g cm−3 for holotype and cotype, respectively. The empirical formulae calculated (from electron microprobe data) based on the sum of all atoms = 4 apfu are Ag0.95Hg1.00S1.01(I0.83Br0.19Cl0.03)Σ1.05 for holotype and Ag0.97Hg0.97S1.05(I0.76Br0.25)Σ1.01 for cotype. Hanauerite is orthorhombic, space group Pmma; the unit cell parameters (from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data; holotype/cotype) are: a = 9.932(2)/9.9256(8), b = 4.6219(19)/4.6209(2), c = 9.891(4)/9.9006(4) Å, V = 454.0(3)/454.19(5) Å3, and Z = 4. The crystal structure was studied on single crystals extracted from both holotype and cotype specimens; R1 = 0.0416 (holotype) and =0.0544 (cotype). In hanauerite, Hg2+ cations centre strongly distorted octahedra with two short Hg–S bonds (Hg and S atoms build “crankshaft-type” chains) and four strongly elongated Hg–I bonds. The Hg-centred octahedra are connected via common edges and faces to form corrugated layers; Ag+ cations are located between these layers. Hanauerite is named in honour of the German mineral collector Dr. Alfred Hanauer (1912–1988). The common crystal chemical features of mercury sulphohalide minerals are discussed. Full article

Anastomosis groups (AGs) or subgroups of 244 Rhizoctonia isolates recovered from sugar beet roots with symptoms of root and crown rot were characterized to be AG-A, AG-K, AG-2-2IIIB, AG-2-2IV, AG-3 PT, AG-4HGI, AG-4HGII, and AG-4HGIII, with AG-4HGI (108 isolates, 44.26%) and AG-2-2IIIB (107 isolates, 43.85%) being predominate. Four unclassified mycoviruses and one hundred and one putative mycoviruses belonging to six families, namely Mitoviridae (60.00%), Narnaviridae (18.10%), Partitiviridae (7.62%), Benyviridae (4.76%), Hypoviridae (3.81%), and Botourmiaviridae (1.90%), were found to be present in these 244 Rhizoctonia isolates, most of which (88.57%) contained positive single-stranded RNA genome. The 244 Rhizoctonia isolates were all sensitive to flutolanil and thifluzamide, with average median effective concentration (EC50) value of 0.3199 ± 0.0149 μg·mL−1 and 0.1081 ± 0.0044 μg·mL−1, respectively. Among the 244 isolates, except for 20 Rhizoctonia isolates (seven isolates of AG-A and AG-K, one isolate of AG-4HGI, and 12 isolates of AG-4HGII), 117 isolates of AG-2-2IIIB, AG-2-2IV, AG-3 PT, and AG-4HGIII, 107 isolates of AG-4HGI, and six isolates of AG-4HGII were sensitive to pencycuron, with average EC50 value of 0.0339 ± 0.0012 μg·mL−1. Correlation index (ρ) of cross-resistance level between flutolanil and thifluzamide, flutolanil and pencycuron, and thifluzamide and pencycuron was 0.398, 0.315, and 0.125, respectively. This is the first detailed study on AG identification, mycovirome analysis, and sensitivity to flutolanil, thifluzamide, and pencycuron of Rhizoctonia isolates associated with sugar beet root and crown rot. Naringin (Nar) is a dihydroflavonoid compound, widely found in citrus fruit and used in Chinese herbal medicine. As a phytochemical, it acts as a dietary supplement that can delay aging and prevent aging-related disease, such as obesity and diabetes. However, its exact mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the high-glucose-induced (HGI) Caenorhabditis elegans model was used to evaluate the anti-aging and anti-obesity effects of Nar. The mean lifespan and fast movement span of HGI worms were extended roughly 24% and 11%, respectively, by Nar treatment. Oil red O staining revealed a significant reduction in fat accumulation and dFP::LGG-labeled worms showed the promotion of autophagy. Additionally, whole transcriptome sequencing and gene set variation analysis suggested that Nar upregulated the lipid biosynthesis and metabolism pathways, as well as the TGF-β, Wnt and longevity signaling pathways. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis identified hub genes in these pathways for further analysis. Mutant worms and RNA interference were used to study mechanisms; the suppression of hlh-30, lgg-1, unc-51, pha-4, skn-1 and yap-1 disabled the fat-lowering, lifespan-prolonging, and health-promoting properties of Nar. Collectively, our findings indicate that Nar plays an important role in alleviating HGI-aging and anti-obesity effects by reducing fat accumulation and promoting autophagy. Full article

In this study, the diversity of putative mycoviruses present in 66 strains of binucleate Rhizoctonia (BNR, including anastomosis group (AG)-A, AG-Fa, AG-K, and AG-W) and 192 strains of multinucleate Rhizoctonia (MNR, including AG-1-IA, AG-2-1, AG-3 PT, AG-4HGI, AG-4HGII, AG-4HGIII, and AG-5), which are the causal agents of potato stem canker or black scurf, was studied using metatranscriptome sequencing. The number of contigs related to mycoviruses identified from BNR and MNR was 173 and 485, respectively. On average, each strain of BNR accommodated 2.62 putative mycoviruses, while each strain of MNR accommodated 2.53 putative mycoviruses. Putative mycoviruses detected in both BNR and MNR contained positive single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA), double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), and negative single-stranded RNA (-ssRNA) genomes, with +ssRNA genome being the prevalent nucleic acid type (82.08% in BNR and 75.46% in MNR). Except for 3 unclassified, 170 putative mycoviruses found in BNR belonged to 13 families; excluding 33 unclassified, 452 putative mycoviruses found in MNR belonged to 19 families. Through genome organization, multiple alignments, and phylogenetic analyses, 4 new parititviruses, 39 novel mitoviruses, and 4 new hypoviruses with nearly whole genome were detected in the 258 strains of BNR and MNR. The immunosenescence-related disproportion in T lymphocytes may have important consequences for endothelial dysfunction, which is a key event in vascular aging. The study was designed to assess the prognostic values of the inflammatory-immune profile to better predict and prevent vascular diseases associated with old age. Eighty individuals aged 70.9 ± 5.3 years were allocated to a low- (LGI) or high-grade inflammation (HGI) group based on CRP (<3 or ≥3 mg/L) as a conventional risk marker of cardiovascular diseases. Significant changes in inflammatory and endothelium-specific variables IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, oxLDL, H2O2, NO, 3-nitrotyrosine, and endothelial progenitor cells (OR 7.61, 95% CI 2.56–29.05, p < 0.0001), confirmed their interplay in vascular inflammation. The flow-cytometry analysis demonstrated a high disproportion in T lymphocytes CD4+ and CD8+ between LGI and HGI groups. CRP was <3 mg/mL for the CD4/CD8 ratio within the reference values ≥ 1 or ≤2.5, unlike for the CD4/CD8 ratio < 1 and >2.5. The odds ratios for the distribution of CD4+ (OR 5.98, 95% CI 0.001–0.008, p < 0.001), CD8+ (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.08–0.59, p < 0.01), and CD8CD45RO+ T naïve cells (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.097–0.695, p < 0.01) and CD4/CD8 (OR 5.69, 95% CI 2.07–17.32, p < 0.001) indicated a potential diagnostic value of T lymphocytes for clinical prognosis in aging-related vascular dysfunction. Oligogalacturonides (OGs) are a bioactive carbohydrate derived from homogalacturonan. The OGs synthesized in this study significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani AG-4HGI in vitro, even at a low concentration (10 mg/L). The seed vigor test demonstrated that the application of 50 mg/L OGs to sugar beet seeds significantly increased average germination percentage, germination energy, germination index, and seedling vigor index. The same concentration of OGs also improved the seedling emergence percentage of sugar beet when seeds were sown in soil inoculated with D2 and D31 isolates, respectively. The lesion diameter on mature sugar beet roots caused by R. solani AG-4HGI isolates D2 and D31 also decreased by 40.60% and 39.86%, respectively, in sugar beets roots first treated with 50 mg/mL OGs in the wound site, relative to lesion size in untreated/pathogen inoculated wounds. Sugar beet roots treated with 50 mg/mL OGs prior to inoculation with the D2 isolate exhibited up-regulation of the defense-related genes glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) by 2.4- and 1.6-fold, respectively, relative to control roots. Sugar beet roots treated with 50 mg/mL OGs prior to inoculation with D31 exhibited a 2.0- and 1.6-fold up-regulation of GPX and SOD, respectively, relative to the control. Our results indicate that OGs have the potential to be used for the protection of sugar beet against R. solani AG-4HGI. Full article

The glycemic index (GI) reflects the relative ability of carbohydrates to raise blood glucose. We utilized a controlled feeding study to assess the impact of the dietary GI on β-cell function in adults with prediabetes (17F/18M, mean ± SEM: BMI 32.44 ± 0.94 kg/m2, age 54.2 ± 1.57 years). Following a 2 week Control diet (GI = 55–58), participants were randomized to either a 4 week low GI (LGI: GI < 35, n = 17) or high GI (HGI: GI > 70, n = 18) diet (55% of energy from carbohydrate/30% fat/15% protein). The data from 4 h meal tolerance tests (MTTs) underwent mathematical modeling to assess insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion and β-cell function. Glucose concentrations during the MTT decreased on the LGI diet (p < 0.001) and trended to increase on the HGI diet (p = 0.14; LGI vs. HGI p < 0.001), with parallel changes in insulin and C-peptide concentrations. Total insulin secretion, adjusted for glucose and insulin sensitivity, increased on the LGI diet (p = 0.002), and trended lower on the HGI diet (p = 0.10; LGI vs. HGI p = 0.001). There was no significant diet effect on insulin sensitivity or other measures of β-cell function. Total insulin clearance increased on the LGI diet (p = 0.01; LGI vs. HGI p < 0.001). We conclude that short-term consumption of an LGI diet reduced glucose exposure and insulin secretion but had no impact on measures of β-cell function. Full article

This analysis aims to determine photon attenuation for five different ternary and binary iodide compounds using Phy-X/PSD software. For a broad range of photon energies between 0.015 and 15 MeV, the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP) for the samples of Cu2HgI4, Ag2HgI4, CuI, AgI, and HgI were calculated. For illustration, the following values of TVL apply at 1 MeV: S1: 6.062 cm, S2: 6.209 cm, S3: 6.929 cm, S4: 6.897 cm, and S5: 4.568 cm. Some important parameters, such as total atomic cross-sections (ACS), electronic cross-sections (ECS), the effective atomic numbers (Zeff), effective electron density (Neff), and effective conductivity (Ceff) of the samples were also calculated. Additionally, exposure buildup factors (EBF) and energy-absorption buildup factor (EABF) were estimated. These data on the radiation characteristics of our samples could be useful for gamma attenuation. The HgI sample has the highest FNRCS values (0.0892) relative to the other tested samples showing good neutron attenuation features. The CuI sample shows low gamma attenuation features; in contrast, it shows high neutron attenuation features. Full article

One of the latest theories on ageing focuses on immune response, and considers the activation of subclinical and chronic inflammation. The study was designed to explain whether anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle exercise affect an inflammatory profile in the Polish elderly population. Sixty individuals (80.2 ± 7.9 years) were allocated to a low-grade inflammation (LGI n = 33) or high-grade inflammation (HGI n = 27) group, based on C-reactive protein concentration (<3 or ≥3 mg/L) as a conventional marker of systemic inflammation. Diet analysis focused on vitamins D, C, E, A, β-carotene, n-3 and n-6 PUFA using single 24-h dietary recall. LGI demonstrated a lower n-6/n-3 PUFA but higher vitamin D intake than HGI. Physical performance based on 6-min walk test (6MWT) classified the elderly as physically inactive, whereby LGI demonstrated a significantly higher gait speed (1.09 ± 0.26 m/s) than HGI (0.72 ± 0.28 m/s). Circulating interleukins IL-1β, IL-6, IL-13, TNFα and cfDNA demonstrated high concentrations in the elderly with low 6MWT, confirming an impairment of physical performance by persistent systemic inflammation. These findings reveal that increased intake of anti-inflammatory diet ingredients and physical activity sustained throughout life attenuate progression of inflammaging in the elderly and indicate potential therapeutic strategies to counteract pathophysiological effects of ageing. A total of 132 Rhizoctonia isolates were recovered from red cabbage plants with root rot and wirestem symptoms in the province of Samsun (Turkey) between 2018 and 2019. Based on the sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region located between the 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA genes and including nuclear staining, these 124 isolates were assigned to multinucleate Rhizoctonia solani, and eight were binucleate Rhizoctonia. The most prevalent anastomosis group (AG) was AG 4 (84%), which was subdivided into AG 4 HG-I (81%) and AG 4 HG-III (3%), followed by AG 5 (10%) and AG-A (6%), respectively. The unweighted pair group method phylogenetic tree resulting from the data of 68 isolates with the inter-PBS amplification DNA profiling method based on interspersed retrotransposon element sequences confirmed the differentiation of AGs with a higher resolution. In the greenhouse experiment with representative isolates (n = 24) from AGs on red cabbage (cv. Rondale), the disease severity index was between 3.33 and 4.0 for multinucleate AG isolates and ranged from 2.5 to 3.17 for AG-A isolates. In the pathogenicity assay of six red cabbage cultivars, one isolate for each AG was tested using a similar method, and all cultivars were susceptible to AG 4 HG-I and AG 4 HG-III isolates. Redriver and Remale were moderately susceptible, while Rescue, Travero, Integro, and Rondale were susceptible to the AG 5 isolate. The results indicate that the most prevalent and aggressive AGs of Rhizoctonia are devastating pathogens to red cabbage, which means that rotation with nonhost-crops for these AGs may be the most effective control strategy. This is the first comprehensive study of Rhizoctonia isolates in red cabbage using a molecular approach to assess genetic diversity using iPBS-amplified DNA profiling. Full article

Both glycemic index and dietary fiber are associated with cardiovascular disease risk, which may be related in part to postprandial vascular effects. We examined the effects of both glycemic index (GI) and dietary (mainly cereal) fiber on postprandial endothelial function. Eleven adults (5 men; 6 women; age = 42.4 ± 16.1 years; weight = 70.5 ± 10.7 kg; height = 173.7 ± 8.7 cm) consumed four different breakfast meals on separate, randomized occasions: High-Fiber, Low-GI (HF-LGI: Fiber = 20.4 g; GI = 44); Low-Fiber, Low-GI (LF-LGI: Fiber = 4.3 g; GI = 43); Low-Fiber, High-GI (LF-HGI: Fiber = 3.6 g; GI = 70); High-Fiber, High-GI (HF-HGI: Fiber = 20.3 g; GI = 71). Meals were equal in total kcal (~600) and macronutrient composition (~90 g digestible carbohydrate; ~21 g protein; ~15 g fat). The HF-LGI meal resulted in a significant increase in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) 4 h after meal ingestion (7.8% ± 5.9% to 13.2% ± 5.5%; p = 0.02). FMD was not changed after the other meals. Regardless of fiber content, low-GI meals resulted in ~9% lower 4-h glucose area under curve (AUC) (p < 0.05). The HF-LGI meal produced the lowest 4-h insulin AUC, which was ~43% lower than LF-HGI and HF-HGI (p < 0.001), and 28% lower than LF-LGI (p = 0.02). We conclude that in healthy adults, a meal with low GI and high in cereal fiber enhances postprandial endothelial function. Although the effect of a low-GI meal on reducing postprandial glucose AUC was independent of fiber, the effect of a low-GI meal on reducing postprandial insulin AUC was augmented by cereal fiber. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of ingesting either a high glycaemic index (HGI) or low glycaemic index (LGI) carbohydrate meal (preceding a 12 h overnight fast and where the meal was ingested 45-min prior to activity) on intermittent sprint and endurance exercise performance. Ten male varsity athletes from intermittent sports (age 23.6 ± 1.7 years, VO2max 51.9 ± 4.7 mL·kg−1·min−1) underwent a peak velocity (Vpeak) test and familiarisation session, followed by two experimental sessions in random order. Experimental sessions involved the ingestion of either an HGI or LGI meal, followed by the completion of the modified Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (mLIST). There was no significant difference between HGI or LGI meals on sprint times (p = 0.62) and distance to exhaustion (p = 0.54) in the mLIST. Exercise heart rate, blood lactate and ratings of perceived exertion were also similar between the two meal trials throughout the mLIST (all p > 0.05). Subjective ratings of hunger, fullness, satiety and satisfaction were also not significantly different between the two meals. In conclusion, consuming either an HGI or LGI meal after a prolonged 12 h fast and ingesting the meal 45 min prior to exercise did not differ in either physiological, subjective and intermittent sprint and endurance performance outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the postprandial effects of high and low glycemic index (GI) breakfasts on vascular function. It was a crossover trial that included 40 young healthy adults (50% women), aged 20–40 years, who were recruited at primary care settings. They consumed three experimental breakfasts in randomized order, each one separated by a 1-week washout period: (1) control conditions (only water); (2) low GI (LGI) breakfast (29.4 GI and 1489 KJ energy); and (3) high GI (HGI) breakfast (64.0 GI and 1318 KJ energy). Blood samples were collected at 60 and 120 min after each breakfast to determine glucose and insulin levels. Vascular parameters were measured at 15 min intervals. Augmentation index (AIx) was studied as a primary outcome. Secondary outcomes comprised glucose, insulin, heart rate (HR) and pulse pressures (PPs). We found a trend toward increased AIx, HR and PPs for the HGI versus the LGI breakfast. A significant interaction between the type of breakfast consumed and all measured parameters was identified (p < 0.05) except for central PP. Stratifying data by sex, this interaction remained significant for AIx and augmentation pressure only in males (p < 0.05). In conclusion, breakfast GI could affect postprandial vascular responses in young healthy adults. Full article
