African swine fever (ASF) needs to be controlled, and prevention of the spread of African swine fever virus (ASFV) is dependent on enhanced surveillance and early disease detection. Commercial swine operations, especially in North America, Europe, and Asia, are characterized by comparatively large numbers of pigs, and sampling individual pigs, which represents the main strategy for current ASF surveillance, can be both costly and labor intensive. A study performed in Ghana was designed to estimate the diagnostic sensitivity of pen-based aggregate oral fluid testing for ASFV in infected pigs in a pen of 30 animals and to evaluate its utility as a tool to support surveillance of ASF in the US. This study was performed in three phases: (i) virus (Ghana ASFV24) amplification in a target host species to generate the challenge inoculum; (ii) titration of the inoculum (10% spleen homogenate) in target host species to determine the minimum dose inducing acute ASF in pigs with survival up to 5–6 days post-inoculation (dpi); and (iii) the main study, involving 186 pigs, consisting of 6 replicates of 30 pigs per pen and one seeder pig inoculated with wildtype ASFV (highly virulent genotype II) per pen. Daily sampling of aggregate oral fluids, uncoagulated blood, oropharyngeal swabs, fecal and water nipple swabs, and recording of rectal temperatures and clinical observations was carried out. The seeder pigs were each inoculated intramuscularly with 0.5 mL of the 10% spleen homogenate, which induced the desired clinical course of ASF in the pigs, with survival of up to 6 dpi. ASFV DNA was detected in the seeder pigs as early as 1 dpi and 2 dpi in the blood and oropharyngeal swabs, respectively. Transmission of ASFV from the seeder pigs to the contact pig population was detected via positive amplification of ASFV DNA in aggregate oral fluid samples at 3 days post-contact (dpc) in 4 out of 6 pens, and in all 6 pens, at 4 dpc. Testing of oropharyngeal swabs and blood samples from individual pigs revealed a variable number of ASFV-positive pigs between 3 and 5 dpc, with detection of 100% positivity between 6 and 18 dpc, the study endpoint. These findings demonstrate the potential utility of aggregate oral fluid sampling for sensitive and early detection of ASFV incursion into naïve swine herds. It also demonstrates that testing of environmental samples from the premises could further enhance overall ASF early detection and surveillance strategies. Full article

The frequency of specific variants associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases has been extensively studied through genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Differences between populations may be caused by the interaction of several factors, such as environmental and genetic backgrounds. Here, we studied 19 SNPs involved in atherosclerosis (AT) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in the Azorean and mainland Portuguese populations and compared their frequencies with other European, Asian, and African populations. Results revealed that, although there was no difference between Azorean and mainland populations, eight SNPs in ADAMTS7, PCSK9, APOE, and LDLR genes showed significant statistical differences (χ2, p < 0.05) when compared with the European population. The multilocus genetic profile (MGP) analysis demonstrated that 7.4% of mainlanders and 11.2% of Azoreans have a high-risk of developing atherosclerosis. The opposite tendency was observed for venous thromboembolism risk, where the mainland population presented a higher risk (6.5%) than the Azorean population (4.1%). Significant differences in VTE-MGP distribution were found among the Azorean geographic groups (p < 0.05), with the Eastern group showing the highest VTE risk. Conversely, for the risk AT-MGP, the Central group shows the highest risk (12.9%). Taken together, the data suggest a risk of developing a cardiovascular disease consistent with the European population. However, the Azorean-specific genetic background and socio-cultural habits (dietary and sedentary) may explain the differences observed, validating the need to assess the allelic and genotypic frequencies between different populations, especially in small geographical locations, such as the Azores archipelago. In conclusion, these findings can improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of high-risk individuals, and contribute to reducing the lifelong burden of cardiovascular diseases in the Azorean population. Drones can improve the efficiency of point-to-point logistics and distribution and reduce labor costs; however, the complex three-dimensional airspace environment poses significant challenges for flight paths. To address this demand, this paper proposes a hybrid algorithm that integrates the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) with the African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA). Firstly, the algorithm introduces Sobol sequences at the population initialization stage to optimize the initial population; then, we incorporate SSA’s discoverer and vigilant mechanisms to balance exploration and exploitation and enhance global exploration capabilities; finally, multi-guide differencing and dynamic rotation transformation strategies are introduced in the first exploitation phase to enhance the direction of local exploitation by fusing multiple pieces of information; the second exploitation phase achieved a dynamic balance between elite guidance and population diversity through adaptive weight adjustment and enhanced Lévy flight strategy. In this paper, a three-dimensional model is built under a variety of constraints, and SAVOA (Sparrow-Enhanced African Vulture Optimization Algorithm) is compared with a variety of popular algorithms in simulation experiments. SAVOA achieves the optimal path in all scenarios, verifying the efficiency and superiority of the algorithm in UAV logistics path planning. Full article

The morphological diversity of Moroccan honey bees (Apis mellifera) was investigated using geometric morphometrics to assess wing venation patterns among three populations representing three climatic zones: desert, semiarid, and Mediterranean. A total of 193 honey bee samples were analyzed and compared to historical reference samples from the Morphometric Bee Data Bank in Oberursel, representing the three subspecies: A. m. intermissa, A. m. sahariensis, and A. m. major. Principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis revealed significant, yet overlapping morphological differences among the climatic groups. Spatial modeling showed a significant southwest–northeast clinal gradient in wing morphology. Almost all samples were assigned to the African evolutionary lineage, except one, suggesting a dominant African genetic background. Interestingly, all three populations showed greater morphological affinity to A. m. intermissa than to A. m. sahariensis, which could indicate introgression or limitations in the current reference dataset. These discrepancies highlight the necessity of revising subspecies boundaries using updated morphometric and genomic approaches. These findings improve our understanding of honey bee biodiversity in Morocco and provide valuable information for conservation and breeding programs. Full article

Food safety concerns related to pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables have increased globally, particularly in regions where monitoring programs are scarce or inconsistent. This study provides the first multi-year evaluation of pesticide contamination and associated dietary risks in Cape Verde, an African island nation increasingly reliant on imported produce. A total of 570 samples of fruits and vegetables—both locally produced and imported—were collected from major markets across the country between 2017 and 2020 and analyzed using validated multiresidue methods based on gas chromatography coupled to Ion Trap mass spectrometry (GC-IT-MS/MS), and both gas and liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-QqQ-MS/MS and LC-QqQ-MS/MS). Residues were detected in 63.9% of fruits and 13.2% of vegetables, with imported fruits showing the highest contamination levels and diversity of compounds. Although only one sample exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by the European Union, 80 different active substances were quantified—many of them not authorized under the current EU pesticide residue legislation. Dietary exposure was estimated using median residue levels and real consumption data from the national nutrition survey (ENCAVE 2019), enabling a refined risk assessment based on actual consumption patterns. The cumulative hazard index for the adult population was 0.416, below the toxicological threshold of concern. However, when adjusted for children aged 6–11 years—taking into account body weight and relative consumption—the cumulative index approached 1.0, suggesting a potential health risk for this vulnerable group. A limited number of compounds, including omethoate, oxamyl, imazalil, and dithiocarbamates, accounted for most of the risk. Many are banned or heavily restricted in the EU, highlighting regulatory asymmetries in global food trade. These findings underscore the urgent need for strengthened residue monitoring in Cape Verde, particularly for imported products, and support the adoption of risk-based food safety policies that consider population-specific vulnerabilities and mixture effects. The methodological framework used here can serve as a model for other low-resource countries seeking to integrate analytical data with dietary exposure in a One Health context. Full article

Background/Objectives: Hypertension (HTN) continues to be a leading cause of death and disability in older adults, especially in the southeastern United States. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationships among measured, diagnosed, and treated (HTN) in community-dwelling adults participating in student-led health screenings in eastern Alabama. Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, students from health-related disciplines facilitated screenings at 23 community and independent living sites to conduct health assessments, including measuring blood pressure (BP), obtaining medical history, and evaluating current prescriptions. Statistical analyses including chi-square tests, t-tests, and backward stepwise linear regression were performed. Results: The current sample includes data from 357 adults aged 60 to 99 years (mean age 74.6 ± 8.7), who were 70.9% females, 60.8% identifying as Black/African American (BA), and 36.8% residing in rural areas. The majority of clients had a prior HTN diagnosis (71.1%) and/or currently measured HTN (78.7%). Forty-three percent of adults screened had measured, diagnosed, and pharmaceutically treated HTN, while 31% had measured but untreated HTN. Black clients had higher measured systolic and diastolic BP and were more likely to also have been diagnosed with HTN (p < 0.05 for all). Linear regression indicated that lower systolic BP was predicted by not living alone (p = 0.003), White race (p = 0.004), and previous HTN diagnosis (p = 0.012), while female gender (p = 0.079) and decreasing body mass index (p = 0.053) had marginal predictive value. Conclusions: These results indicate that awareness and screening of HTN in this population are noteworthy, though management of the disease through ongoing screening and referrals is essential to reduce disparities. Introduction: Dental caries and molar–incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) are prevalent conditions affecting children’s oral health, with functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial implications. In Spain, previous studies have highlighted geographic and sociodemographic disparities in their distribution, particularly among rural and migrant populations. Objective: To characterise oral health status, in terms of caries and MIH, among 6–7-year-old children from the towns of Palos de la Frontera, Mazagón, and San Bartolomé. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 229 children recruited from public primary schools. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and behavioural data were collected through clinical examination and interview. Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate logistic regression. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Huelva. Results: The prevalence of caries (DMFT ≥ 1) was 53.3%, with mean DMFT and dft indices of 1.78 and 0.31, respectively. MIH affected 32.8% of the cohort, with a predominance in the first permanent molars (teeth 36 and 26). Multivariate analysis identified independent predictors of caries: African (OR = 7.47; 95% CI: 2.84–23.8) and European (OR = 4.56; 95% CI: 1.26–22.3) parental origin, poor oral hygiene (OR = 3.07; 95% CI: 1.60–6.03), and the presence of MIH (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.64–6.42). The municipality of San Bartolomé was associated with a higher risk of MIH (OR = 2.90; 95% CI: 1.21–7.45). Conclusions: The high prevalence of caries and MIH in the Condado-Campiña district, exceeding national averages, reflects oral health inequities linked to social determinants (migrant origin, locality) and clinical factors (MIH, oral hygiene). Targeted preventive interventions are urgently needed in high-risk populations, including culturally tailored education and policies ensuring equitable access to dental care services. Full article

West Africa faces persistent food and nutrition insecurity despite agricultural efforts, exacerbated by population growth, climate change, and socio-economic vulnerabilities. This study argues that integrating food processing principles with nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) and nutrition-smart agriculture (NSmartAg) offers a transformative solution for human health. Therefore, we delineate these interconnected concepts and highlight their synergistic potential for a nutrition-focused food system. Likewise, critical analysis of key regional challenges, including infrastructural weaknesses, policy gaps, and gender inequities, was made prior to identifying significant opportunities for leveraging food processing as a strategic entry point to accelerate the implementation of NSA and NSmartAg. Based on these insights, six strategic pathways are proposed to achieve this objective: (i) integrating food processing into policies; (ii) investing in interdisciplinary R&D that puts nutrition and health benefits at the forefront of desired outcomes along with others; (iii) strengthening farmer and food processor capacities; (iv) improving agri-food infrastructure; (v) fostering multi-sectoral collaboration; and (vi) prioritizing youth engagement and market development. By adopting these integrated strategies, West African countries can build more resilient, equitable, and nutrition-centered food systems, ultimately improving public health outcomes and fostering sustainable regional development. Africa’s rapid urbanization often exceeds the capacity of governments to provide essential services and infrastructure, exacerbating structural inequalities and exposing vulnerable populations to serious health risks. This paper examines the case of Douala, Cameroon, to demonstrate that health inequities in African cities are not simply the result of urban growth but are shaped by spatial inequities, historical legacies, and systemic exclusion. Disadvantaged neighborhoods are particularly impacted, becoming epicenters of health crises. Using a mixed-methods approach combining spatial analysis, household surveys and interviews, the study identifies three key findings: (1) Healthcare services in Douala are unevenly distributed and dominated by private providers, which limits access for low-income residents. (2) Inadequate infrastructure and environmental risks in informal settlements lead to a higher disease burden and an overflow of demand into better-equipped districts, which overwhelms public health centers across the city. (3) This structural mismatch fuels widespread reliance on informal and unregulated care practices. This study positions Douala as a microcosm of broader public health challenges in rapidly urbanizing African cities. It highlights the need for integrated urban planning and health system reforms that address spatial inequalities, strengthen public health infrastructure, and prioritize equity—key principles for achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (ensuring good health and well-being for all residents) in sub-Saharan Africa. Pesticide exposure gradients between occupational, para-occupational, and general populations remain poorly characterized in North African agricultural contexts. This study evaluates urinary pesticide levels among farmers, indirectly exposed individuals, and a control group in Morocco’s Fez-Meknes region. A cross-sectional survey measured pesticide concentrations using LC-MS/MS in urine samples collected from 154 adults residing in both rural and urban areas. A questionnaire was used to gather information from participants regarding factors that may elevate the risk of pesticide exposure. The results revealed that farmers exhibited the highest concentrations of pesticides in their urine, including compounds classified as Ia/Ib by the World Health Organization. Indirectly exposed individuals showed moderate levels of contamination, with notable detections such as dichlofluanid (22.13 µg/L), while the control group had residual traces of neonicotinoids, notably imidacloprid (2.05 µg/L). Multivariate analyses revealed several sociodemographic factors significantly associated with increased pesticide exposure. The main risk factors identified included low education, residence in an agricultural area, and the consumption of untreated water (wells/rivers). Conversely, wearing personal protective equipment was associated with reduced urinary concentrations. This study highlights intense occupational exposure among farmers, secondary environmental contamination among residents living near treated areas, and the widespread dispersion of pesticide residues into urban areas. Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases are a global health issue with an increasing burden and are exacerbated by hypertension. High blood pressure is partly attributed to genetic variants that are generally not well understood or extensively studied in sub-Saharan African populations. Variants linked to blood pressure have been found through genome-wide association studies (GWASs), which were mostly conducted among European ancestry populations; however, limited research has been undertaken in Africa. The current study evaluated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of PCSK9, ABCA1, LPL, and PON1 in relation to blood pressure measurements of 1839 Ghanaian adults. Methods: Genotypes were extracted from data generated by the H3Africa SNP array. After adjusting for sex, age, smoking, and body mass index (BMI), inferential statistics were used to investigate the relationships between SNPs and blood pressure (BP) indices. Additionally, Bonferroni correction was used to adjust for multiple testing. Results: Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the minor allele T of the PCSK9 variant (rs17111557) were positively associated at p = 0.006 after covariate adjustments. Although this novel DBP-associated variant is located in the 3′ untranslated region (3′ UTR) of the PCSK9 gene, in silico functional prediction suggests it is an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) that may change the binding site of transcription factors, potentially altering the rate of transcription and impacting DBP in this Ghanaian population. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the role of genetics in hypertension risk and the potential of discovering new therapies targeting isolated diastolic blood pressure in this rural African population. Health literacy is a critical determinant of health outcomes, yet it is often overlooked, particularly among marginalized groups. This paper explores the significance of health literacy, with a particular focus on low-income African American and Black (AA/B) men, a population that faces unique challenges due to intersecting factors such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational disparities. We examine how these factors contribute to health literacy gaps, highlighting adverse effects on health outcomes for AA/B men compared to the general population. Additionally, we stress the growing importance of digital literacy in an increasingly technology-driven world. Not actively addressing digital health literacy, especially within chronic disease self-management programs (CDSMPs), further exacerbates health disparities within this group. Recommendations are provided for improving health literacy, with specific strategies to also enhance general literacy and digital literacy, among low-income AA/B men. The paper also advocates for a systematic review of the existing literature on health literacy among this group, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions that account for the unique challenges faced by low-income AA/B men. In conclusion, the paper underscores the critical need for targeted research and practical approaches to improve health literacy and ultimately health outcomes for AA/B men in the digital age, particularly through CDSMPs. Ancestry-Specific Hypothetical Genetic Feedback About Lung Cancer Risk in African American Individuals Who Smoke: Cognitive, Emotional, and Motivational Effects on Cessation

Genetic factors play an important role in the risk of developing lung cancer, a disease that disproportionately affects African American (AA) individuals who smoke. Accumulating evidence suggests that specific ancestry-informative genetic markers are predictive of lung cancer risk in AA individuals who smoke. Although testing for, and communication of, genetic risk to patients should impact health and screening, results are mixed. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of genetic risk communication that also included ancestry-specific risk information among African American individuals who smoke. Using an experimental design, African American individuals who smoke (n = 166) were assigned randomly to receive hypothetical genetic test results that indicated (1) low vs. high genetic risk for lung cancer (“Risk”) and (2) European vs. African Ancestry (“Ancestry”). We hypothesized that participants who had been told that they were both at high risk for lung cancer based on genetic markers prominent in African persons at risk of lung cancer, and that they have African ancestry, would exhibit increases in cognitive (perceived lung cancer risk), emotional (cancer worry and psychological distress), and motivational (motivation to quit smoking) factors shown to predict longer-term health behavior change. Results revealed significant and moderate-to-large effects of Risk for all outcomes. There was also a significant Ancestry effect on perceived lung cancer risk: increased risk perceptions among participants who learned that they have high African genetic heritage. Path analytic modeling revealed that cognitive and emotional factors mediated the effects of both Risk and Ancestry feedback on motivation to quit smoking. Findings further highlight the importance of incorporating ancestry-specific genetic risk information into genetic counseling sessions, especially in underserved populations, as doing so may impact key cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors critical to behavior change. The Temporal Dynamics of the Impact of Overfishing on the Resilience of the Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppel, 1858) Fish Species’ Population in the West African Lake Toho

This research investigated the temporal dynamics of the anthropogenic impact of fishing pressure on the resilience of the fish species Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppel, 1858) in the African Lake Toho, located in southwest Benin. The sampling and analysis of monthly length frequency data were conducted from April 2002 to March 2003 and from April 2022 to March 2023 using the FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool (FiSAT II software program (version 1.2.2.). The analysis of the S. melanotheron population in Lake Toho revealed a significantly diminishing resilience potential, reflected mainly in general reductions in both the average size and weight of individuals. There was a notable reduction in the size of Sarotherodon melanotheron individuals caught between 2002–2003 and 2022–2023, reflecting the increased pressure on juvenile size classes. Catches are now concentrated mainly on immature fish, revealing increasing exploitation before sexual maturity is reached. An analysis of maturity stages showed a decrease in the percentage of mature individuals in the catches (69.27% in 2002–2003 compared to 55.07% in 2022–2023) and a reduction in the number of mega-spawners (4.53% in 2002–2003 compared to 1.56% in 2022–2023). Growth parameters revealed a decrease in asymptotic length (from 32.2 cm to 23.8 cm) and longevity (from 9.37 years to 7.89 years), while the growth coefficient slightly increased. The mean size at first capture and optimal size significantly declined, indicating increased juvenile exploitation. The total and natural mortalities increased, whereas the fishing mortality remained stable. The exploitation rate remained high, despite a slight decrease from 0.69 to 0.65. Finally, the declines in the yield per recruit, maximum sustainable yield, and biomass confirm the increasing fishing pressure, leading to growth overfishing, recruitment overfishing, reproductive overfishing, and, last but not least, a decreasing resilience potential. These findings highlight the growing overexploitation of S. melanotheron in Lake Toho, compromising stock renewal, fish population resilience, sustainability, and production while jeopardizing local food safety. African swine fever virus (ASFV) causes global swine outbreaks, but its cellular pathogenesis is poorly understood. Using single-cell RNA data from ASFV-infected pig spleens across four timepoints, we identified macrophages as the primary viral reservoir, with infection driving lymphoid depletion and myeloid expansion. We characterized four functionally distinct macrophage subsets, including a metabolically reprogrammed SusceptibleMac population serving as the major viral niche and an AntiviralMac subset rapidly depleted during infection. Viral gene expression analysis revealed E165R as a central hub in viral replication networks, while host transcriptomics uncovered disruption of Netrin signaling pathways that may facilitate immune evasion. Pseudotime analysis revealed dynamic macrophage state transitions during infection. These findings provide a high-resolution cellular atlas of ASFV pathogenesis, revealing macrophage subset-specific responses that shape disease outcomes and identifying potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
