Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

An increase in the performance of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates the use of highly efficient and high-power-density on-board and off-board EV chargers controlled by enhanced modulation and control techniques. The employment of new configurations of power electronic converters (PECs) as well as the use of very high frequency wide bandgap (WBG) based PECs can reduce the value and size of employed passive components in off-board and on-board EV chargers. The emergence of WBG devices, such as gallium–nitride (GaN) and silicone–carbide (SiC) power switches results in a high switching frequency and low conduction and switching loss. These specifications increase the efficiency, power density, and control response, and reduce the filter size of off-board and on-board EV chargers. However, employing very high switching frequency in WBG-based PECs leads to extra electromagnetic interference (EMI) and higher common mode (CM) current and voltage. Hence, new control and modulation methods are required to reduce EMI and CM current and voltage.

This Special Issue aims to present a collection of studies detailing the latest research on the state-of-the-art configurations, modulation techniques, and control methods of off-board and on-board EV chargers. Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions or survey papers in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • New configurations of WBG-based off-board and on-board EV chargers;
  • Multi-level converter based off-board and on-board EV chargers;
  • Multi-port on-board EV chargers;
  • High-power-density off-board and on-board EV chargers;
  • Fault tolerant configurations of off-board and on-board EV chargers;
  • The reliability of off-board and on-board EV chargers;
  • Advanced modulation and control methods for off-board and on-board EV chargers.
