Water is the essence of live and reliable safe water is a human right recognized by the United Nations. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are to ensure access to safe and affordable drinking water for all before 2030. The new European Union Drinking Water Directive (Directive 2020/2184) reflects this in requiring a risk-based approach with risk assessment and risk management. The Water Safety Plan (WSP) approach has been advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2004 to ensure safe drinking water. WHO and others have developed several guidelines to carry that out. Worldwide countries are in the process of implementing WSP in large and medium size water supplies, whereas small supplies are lagging. This is unfortunate as the small water supplies have been shown to be less compliant with water safety regulation than the larger ones. In this Special Issues of Water Safety Plan the journal Water would like to explore the gain and experience of implementing risk-based approach in water supplies around the world. What are the barriers for use, possible solution to overcome these barriers, what have been the lessons learned on the way, and what could assist for example the small water supplies to overcome these problems. All important issues to share with colleagues around the world.
