Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagus,

During the latest years, an increasing number of pharmaceutical residues have been detected in aquatic systems, raising concerns regarding environmental quality and human health. A large number of experimental studies have reported the development and optimization of analytical techniques for the determination of pharmaceutical residues down to the ng/L levels in aquatic matrices. Toxicity studies have also been published for many pharmaceutical substances, confirming their adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Considering the fact that more and more compounds, including new categories, are being used and released into the aquatic environment, the necessity of further research focusing on their origin, transport and fate, bioavailability and toxicity as well as techniques for their accurate determination, management and control is highlighted. The aim of the present Special Issue is to provide more insight into the above-mentioned subjects, based on up-to-date, high-quality scientific work.
