Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Volcanic activity is a natural source of pollutants of either of the air, soil, and water, and these pollutants can be in the form of particulate matter, toxic gases (e.g., radon, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide), and heavy metals (e.g., arsenic, mercury, cadmium). It is estimated that more than 10% of the worldwide population lives within potential exposure range of some active or historically active volcanos; this number gives us an idea of the importance of volcanism in consideration of the world’s population, both in terms of human health and of the quality of the environment. However, the environmental hazards of volcanogenic pollutants remain largely unknown, and their related health risks need to be further determined. The assessment of the main health hazards and the biomonitoring of human populations and other organisms will allow for estimation of the health risks and, thus, the implementation of risk management measures regarding the environmental exposure to volcanogenic pollutants.

This Special Issue “Toxic Elements in Active Volcanic Environments: From Ecology to Health Effects” aims to address studies covering various aspects of this topic, and we encourage scientists around the world to contribute original research papers, reviews, and short communications dealing with the environmental and health effects of pollutants from volcanic environments. This may include (but is not limited to) the following research topics:

  • Environmental, animal, and human exposure to volcanic pollutants
  • Human/field biomonitoring studies
  • Exposure to volcanic pollutants and health effects
  • Ecotoxicological risk assessment
  • Monitoring volcanic emissions
  • Volcanogenic air pollutants
  • Volcanogenic soil pollutants
  • Biomarkers of exposure and effect

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Toxics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
