Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The present Special Issue will focus on socioecological education for sustainability.
The current socioecological crisis is a challenge that requires, more urgently than ever, an education that brings us closer to more sustainable lifestyles. This education must not only face complex challenges related to complexity and uncertainty but also go beyond the achievement of cognitive skills by developing and acquiring competences for sustainability through the development of scientific skills.
Socioecological issues, which can be defined as integrated systems of ecosystems and human society with reciprocal feedback and interdependence, are intrinsically related to the topics of environmental education. For decades, socioecological systems have shown unsustainable trends, which has raised the awareness of the need for a turnaround toward more sustainable approaches. For this purpose, robust educational proposals that lead to action are essential, considering that these attitudinal transformations must be grounded on a basic understanding of ecological systems and their interactions with social systems.
The aim of this Special issue is, from a broad perspective, to present an overview of educational proposals and experiences related to interactions, counteractions or controversies on socioecological issues, including conceptual, methodological, and case-based experiences. Covered topics include theoretical aspects of science education for sustainability and design and implementation of educational proposals and experiences, both in formal and informal education (environmental education, biodiversity education, health education, etc.). These proposals should ultimately lead to the acquisition of citizen commitments based on scientific evidence and socioecological literacy, for day-to-day decision making to address the sustainability of socioecological systems.
Papers selected for this Special Issue will be subject to a rigorous peer-review procedure with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications.
Works addressing these research questions are welcome:
- How can social-ecological problem-based approaches help students value evidence-based discussions and the acquisition of competencies for sustainability?
- How can science education promote commitments to sustainable practices?
- Which aspects of Science Education Research support appropriate education for sustainability? For instance, what examples of current curricula, lesson plans or study programs are based on the development of competencies for sustainability?
- How can science learning environments be designed in order to recognize the benefits and limitations of sustainability?
- Is there any evidence supporting that learning environments improve students' eco-literacy and commitment to more sustainable lifestyles?
- What role can informal and non-formal learning environments play in citizenship education for the acquisition of competencies for sustainability?
