Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Green and sustainable computing supports business-critical computing needs with the least possible amount of power and sustainable development. Green and sustainable computing is essential for all classes of systems, ranging from handheld systems to large-scale data centers. Along with the ever-growing needs of business computing, fast-growing burden of energy cost, growing awareness of global warming issues, and increasing sense of national energy security, the application of green computing has attracted much attention. In the past, the primary focus of green and sustainable computing was on IT infrastructure that includes power, cooling, renewables, and data center space. In recent years, many research fields have emerged, such as artificial intelligence, AI-empowered systems, edge computing, blockchain, IoT, and industrial systems. These novel fields also have green and sustainable issues. For example, training a modern neural network requires high-performance equipment for hours or even days; in edge computing, numerous power-limited embedding devices suffer from high-energy-consumption applications; and generating a new block in the blockchain requires a long consensus process that consumes a lot of energy. Therefore, more advanced applications of green computing are needed to solve the challenges in these fields.

This Special Issue will present recent developments, challenges, and opportunities related to the advanced application of green and sustainable computing in both classical and emerging fields. Topics of interest include( but are not limited to):

  • Application of green and sustainable computing in data centers;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in cloud computing;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in edge computing;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in the blockchain system;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in an AI-empowered system;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in the IoT system;
  • Application of green and sustainable computing in industry;
  • Energy and thermal estimation approaches;
  • Optimizations on energy efficiency;
  • Optimizations on thermal efficiency;
  • Optimizations on renewable energy utilization;
  • Other topics related to green and sustainable computing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
