Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to a Special Issue on the effects of anthropogenic noise on the behaviour of marine animals. The ocean is crucial for life on Earth and in an era called “Anthropocene”, characterized by the deep influence of mankind in the planetary ecology, it is important to understand how human activities affect nature. Of these activities, anthropogenic noise is considered to have one of the biggest impacts on the marine environment and its organisms and has recently been raising the attention of the general society. Anthropogenic noise has opened up a field of research questions for understanding and, more recently, mitigating its impact on marine life, attracting researchers from diverse fields and lately also policy makers.
This Special Issue will focus on the effects of anthropogenic noise on the behaviour of marine animals. From invertebrates to large whales, there is evidence that noise may disrupt behaviours such as foraging and breeding, triggering effects in both species and community levels of marine ecology. Increasing the knowledge of this subject will allow assertive decisions for marine conservation in the present and future decades.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Effects of anthropogenic noise on marine animal sound production, perception and communication;
- Noise effects on marine animal behaviour;
- Effects of anthropogenic noise on marine species interactions;
- Technological approaches applied to anthropogenic noise and animal behaviour studies;
- Anthropogenic noise management and marine conservation.
Contributors from different fields are invited to submit their articles on this topic.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
