Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
I have always been intrigued by the idea of conservation and travel. Having lived outside my home country 20 years, partly in the former Yugoslavia (Croatia) and then in former Czechoslovakia (Czech), I saw a great variety of travel and tourism from five star river cruises to camping in the forest without permits. Seeing the negative aspects of some types of travel, especially around the Mediterrean, as well as its impact, I wantred to investigate more about alternative travel. This simpler style of travel such as Couchsurfintg (CS) impressed me with the unique style of travel and its small impact and carbon imprint. T
Eventually i condujcted a research on the safeness of the internet based website Couchsurfing (CS).We found that in order for CS to be a safe experience one must complete the following three actions: Make various contacts with the host before the CS experience, read and study the references of the host, and confirm the profile of the individual from the CS website. The initial face to face contact with the host may be difficult due to schedules, travel difficulties, as well as expectations. Although all of the participants had a safe experience, not all of them were satisfied with their experience.
We found that CS experience has a strong impact on the individual as well as the CS host. This impact is embodied as a changed sense of self especially by learning to trust others and learning more about how others are living. Changes in one’s way of travelling caused by Couchsurfing, together with other alternative and unique ways of sustainable travel, may promote a genuine international exchange. More important for sustainability, this low impact way of travel should be more recognized and understood.
Having recently attended a Travel Conference in the USA I was surprised that most of the seminars and information was related to new internet devices in order to capture the travel market. Rarely did I come across a focus on the traveler, or the travelers carbon footprint, or issues of sustainability. There there is a need to reawaken the meaning of travel, leisure, and leaving behind our beautiful places for the future. To this end we dedicate this journal.
