Dear Colleagues,
The relationship between biodiversity conservation and the economy is complex. Although biodiversity conservation and the production of goods and services appear to be complementary, they sometimes compete. Agriculture and tourism are good examples. In the context of agriculture, while genetic improvement in some cultivated plants has allowed for a significant increase in crop yield in the last decades, at the same time it was responsible for remarkable agrobiodiversity losses. Regarding tourism, although biodiversity is crucial for nature-based tourism, other kinds of tourism may threaten the natural environment, causing irreparable damages to biodiversity. In any case, biodiversity conservation is now perceived by society as an important issue and is widely recognized as crucial for the future of humankind at both a political and scientific level. Governments can play a major role in biodiversity conservation, either through the management of public natural areas or by improving the laws, regulations, and policies that affect biodiversity. Moreover, whenever biodiversity is managed by private actors, such as farmers or forest growers, conservation depends on whether these actors find it rewarding. This means that public support may be needed to compensate biodiversity producers for the social service they provide. Therefore, whether it is privately or publicly managed, the conservation of biodiversity represents a high public cost, unless citizens, as biodiversity consumers and not as taxpayers, are directly or indirectly willing to pay for biodiversity conservation.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to offer appreciative and critical perspectives on consumers’ preferences regarding biodiversity and on how consumers’ choices may affect biodiversity conservation.
From this point of view, authors are invited to submit original papers, regarding quantitative and qualitative research, on the contribution of consumers to biodiversity, applied to different types of goods and services, such as food, tourism, and cosmetics.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
