Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The time we have left to save the environment from the consequences of global warming before they become irreversible is running out. It is with this in mind that 195 parties of the United Nations signed the Paris agreement in 2016, to face climate change by limiting global warming to 2 °C by the end of this century. With politicians having set the roadmap for protecting the environment, it is now the role of scientists and researchers to find solutions that can help to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and replace fossil fuel with renewable and sustainable resources in addition to improving the efficiency of energy conversion and transmission. Recent years have witnessed accelerated development in several fields of technologies, which can be employed in the global fight for the environment. The significant progress in the development of nanotechnology on the basis of experimental and theoretical aspects implies promising innovations that can put sustainability on the right track for preventing further environment degradation and fixing the damage done already. Nanosciences play a huge role in this, by allowing new innovations in nanomaterials and by being adaptable and thus offering properties that can help to achieve higher performance in renewable energy systems, which in turn, have become an efficient source of energy that can compete with conventional fossil fuel systems. On the other hand, the progress in data analytics has opened the door for optimizing the performance of renewable energy systems by bridging the gap between the temporal variation of the demands and renewable sources.
This Special Issue aims to focus on progress in nanotechnology using experimental and theoretical applications to improve renewable and sustainable energy resources. The following topics will be covered in this issue:
- Pioneer nanomaterials for solar thermal applications;
- Pioneer nanomaterials for energy storage applications;
- The contribution of the nanomaterials to improving the performance of thermal systems;
- Characterization of nanomaterials for energy conversion and transmission;
- Applications of data science and machine learning in predicting the temporal intensity of renewable resources (solar and wind);
- Performance optimization of renewable energy systems;
- Applications of electrochemicals for green energy sustainability;
- Advancements in nanobiotechnology for energy optimization;
- Phase-change material applications;
- Applications of nanotechnology in environmental engineering.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
