Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The circular economy (CE) concept has been gaining ground in recent years—in research, industry, and policy making—because of its potential to contribute to several sustainable development goals [1], yet the application of CE principles in product design and development (PDD) remains to be systematically explored and further exemplified [2]. As the product design phase has a significant influence on the circularity and sustainability performance of product [3,4], it is key to provide practitioners with the right methods, tools, and indicators to design more circular and sustainable products, services, and systems [5–8]. Throughout the PDD process, designers, material engineers, and product managers are making design choices that will ultimately determine the circularity potential of products, among other criteria such as cost, quality, or production time [9–11]. This Special Issue aims to collect state-of-the-art research on the application of CE principles in PDD, to foster the actual uptake of CE-related design methods and tools in industry.

With this background, the topics of interest for this Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Integration of CE principles within existing PDD processes;
  • Positioning of CE-related methods, tools, and indicators all along the design process;
  • Combination of circular design approaches with conventional methods and tools for PDD;
  • Circularity performance assessment of products during the design and development phases;
  • Trade-off analysis between design for circularity and other design for X approaches;
  • Illustrative examples and industrial case studies on the aforementioned points.

Guest Editors,

Dr. Michael Saidani, Dr. Tetiana Shevchenko

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
