Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about changes to people’s preferences, business processes, and government policies in all parts of the world. Such a situation is often referred to as the “new normal” (Carroll & Conboy, 2020). While the research and development for a vaccine and/or cure is underway, these are likely be ubiquitously available only after a considerable amount of time. At the same time, scholars are positing that some of these changes are of a permanent, rather than temporary, nature (Smolka & Heugens, 2020).

Meanwhile, the tourism industry is experiencing a previously unseen decline in demand and the financial sustainability of many tourism businesses has been compromised. In this light, the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) has asserted the importance of rethinking and rebuilding tourism in order to effectively respond to the new demand for tourism that significantly differs from that in the past.

In this light, many changes have occurred to various aspects of tourism that we need to investigate: tourist behaviors and preferences, value creation by tourism businesses, optimization of traveler experiences, and government policies and regulations regarding tourism. Therefore, this Special Issue calls for papers that address such changes in the “new normal” of tourism. Any conceptual/empirical study that is relevant to the topic or presents appropriate implications is invited for submission to this Special Issue, which will serve as the cornerstone for the rebuilding of the global tourism industry.
