Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue comprises challenges and opportunities associated with one of the most pronounced development trajectories in many landscapes and seascapes: the expansion of wind power for cleaner energy production as a replacement of carbon-based energy systems and as a generic input to sustainable development. In many countries and regions worldwide, wind power installations are entering areas where long-term and extensive natural resource use have transformed natural ecosystems, where there is very limited space left, and where the human footprint has already caused evident impacts. Already at the onset of the era of major wind power expansion, ecological tipping points and cascade effects can therefore not be excluded from sustainability scenarios. Evidently, wind power implies additional threats to ecosystems, ecosystem processes, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and risks for conflicts with other land uses and interests. However, there are opportunities for integration and synergy that allow for multiple-use strategies and justify ecological restoration in areas that are not critically important for other land uses but that can support nature values, in addition to the economic, societal, and infrastructural aspects generated by wind power expansion. The route towards the successful large-scale inclusion of wind power in landscapes and seascapes relies on solid knowledge. With a focus, but not the exclusive focus, on a European context, papers are invited to this Special Issue that provide sound cross-disciplinary science and research on the synergy, integration, and conflicts associated with wind power. Selected papers will be subject to rigorous peer review. Interested contributing authors will be invited to a closing perspective article that outlines local, national, and regional similarities and dissimilarities as well as the main challenges and opportunities.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
