Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Within the field of artificial intelligence, knowledge-based systems (KBSs) aim to solve complex problems by reasoning upon an underlying knowledge base, which is formally specified. In recent years, the popularity of KBSs in different application domains has increased due to support from growing and sophisticated technology whose maturity can currently assure a certain flexibility and scalability in interoperability and knowledge reuse. Indeed, the efforts in terms of standardization of the different languages and data models have contributed to a new understanding of the web (Semantic Web) and, more generally, of data and associated semantics (Linked Data). This Special Issue focuses on applications of KBS solutions in the wide field of sustainability and sustainable development. The emphasis is on holistic systems as well as on more specific aspects such as, among others, knowledge representation; engineering knowledge integration, visualization, and analysis; uncertainty representation; and management. Because of the intrinsic heterogeneity of sustainability, understood at an environmental, cultural, economic, and social level, we expect KBSs to play an increasingly pivotal role in the field in the upcoming future.

We kindly invite you to contribute to the Special Issue “Knowledge-Based Systems and Sustainability”. The focus will be on applications of knowledge-based systems solutions in the wide field of sustainability and sustainable development. The emphasis is on holistic systems as well as on more specific aspects.

Concrete topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Knowledge-based systems for sustainability/sustainable development
  • Ontology/ontology-based systems for sustainability
  • Knowledge representation, visualization, and analysis for sustainability
  • Interoperability of data for sustainability
  • Uncertainty representation and management within solutions for sustainability
  • (Explainable) data integration and knowledge building in sustainability

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
