Dear Colleagues,
The world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, and a new round of industrial transformation is in the making. With the deep integration of informatization and industrialization, industrial transformation with digitalization, networking, and intelligence as the core of manufacturing industry has become a necessary trend of development. The Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee stressed the need to “keep the proportion of manufacturing basically stable, consolidate and strengthen the foundation of the real economy”, and at the same time also “promote the deep integration of the Internet, big data, artificial intelligence and other industries, and promote the development of advanced manufacturing clusters”. Meanwhile, more and more manufacturing enterprises are beginning to accelerate the realization of intelligent and automatic transformation and the integration of the Internet of Things and manufacturing development. The intellectualization of the manufacturing industry not only pays attention to the intellectualization of the “manufacturing” link but also emphasizes the intellectualization of the whole manufacturing chain, such as research and development, production, supply, sales, and service. In particular, we should take intelligence as the carrier to speed up fundamental changes in the mode of production and enterprise form of the manufacturing industry.
At the same time, the rapid development of economic globalization and the emergence of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence have driven the development of the digital economy, and the industrial chains of various countries have been deeply integrated. The digital supply chain is the future development trend. Major events such as COVID-19 have accelerated the transformation of “supply chain resilience” from a concept to an innovative global supply chain integration and restructuring. “Supply chain resilience” refers to the ability of a supply chain to return to its original or more desirable state after a disruption. That is, when disasters occur, the supply chain can withstand the impact, quickly respond and recover, maintain the normal operation of the supply chain function, and better cope with future disaster risk through adaptation.
Based on the above background, it is of great strategic significance to promote the rationalization of the industrial structure for the traditional manufacturing industry, strengthen its market resilience, ensure the efficiency and stability of the supply chain, and promote the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry to the direction of intelligence. According to the existing literature, there are few studies on intelligent manufacturing based on the perspective of supply chain resilience. In order to fill the gap of relevant research, enrich the theory of industrial manufacturing and supply chain resilience management, and promote the high-quality development of the manufacturing industry through intelligent transformation, this Special Issue focuses on the in-depth study of intelligent multidimensional, multilevel, and multifaceted manufacturing-related issues. For example, how can we define and optimize the resilience and reliability of supply chain networks in the case of multiple uncertainties caused by emergencies so as to quickly realize the rapid recovery of disrupted supply chains? How can we ensure the minimum input of limited resources by the government and enterprises when the manufacturing industry operates normally and in an orderly manner under a resilient supply chain? Considering China’s specific national conditions, how can we promote the integrated development of intelligence and resilience for the manufacturing industry in the dual cycle background? How can we improve the theoretical system of intelligent manufacturing and the competitiveness of supply chain in terms of guaranteeing supply, reducing cost, improving efficiency, and controlling risk, based on industrial big data? How can we establish a whole-process risk management system of a resilient supply chain with multilinkage of infrastructure, environment and ecology, and public health, so as to assist the manufacturing industry in achieving risk prevention and controlling intelligent decision making and emergency collaborative management decision-making mechanisms?
