Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The shipping industry is responsible for 2 to 3 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions. While there is already a large body of work available in the literature in this context, the anticipated change in regulation will challenge shipping companies more seriously in order to force them to reduce their emission. In particular, the IMO expects a reduction of 70% in emission produced by the shipping industry compared to the reference year 2008. European countries will be among the first to introduce the carbon tax. Another very important wave that will change the face of this industry forever is approaching. The need for newer technologies; the use of IoT tech, newer decision-making policies, novel alliance formation, and economics/econometrics approaches will certainly contribute to new approaches.

All contributions from the areas of decision science, operations research and management, economics and engineering, and IoT which address the new challenges and propose solutions with the aim of reaching the goals of the IMO 2023–2050 horizon programme are invited in this Special Issue. More quantitative and data-oriented work is particularly encouraged.

The Special Issue overs the following topics:

  • Green logistics;
  • Operations research in maritime;
  • IoT and data ecosystems in maritime transportation;
  • Machine learning and maritime trade and forecasting;
  • Cooperation, collaboration and coopetition;
  • Hinterland and synchromodality;
  • Ship emissions and solutions;
  • Stowage planning;
  • Port energy issues;
  • Maritime and port digitalization and big data use;
  • Maritime and port innovative technologies;
  • Terminal operations in green supply chain;
  • Port capacity and operations efficiency.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
