Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Woody biomass utilization for energy products is a dynamic challenge influenced by numerous factors that influence the emerging bioeconomy. Sustainable biomass use for energy production must ensure that consideration is given to levels of harvests, carbon cycles, and other forest management regimes. This Special Issue will address the role of woody biomass to support a sustainable bioeconomy, with a focus on innovative products and processes. Specific topics of interest include conversion technologies that enhance the sustainable use of biomass (i.e., gasification, torrefaction, combined heat and power, and co-combustion of wood and coal). Bioenergy products such as torrefied wood, biochar, and pellets can support efforts to reduce global greenhouse emissions. Innovative harvesting, transportation, and processing regimes, including bio-hubs, forest depots, and wood products clusters, could also enhance the sustainable use of forest resources. Special attention will be given to sustainable in-woods operations and products.

The Guest Editor of the Special Issue entitled “Woody biomass for bioenergy applications in the emerging bioeconomy” welcomes submissions of original research, critical reviews, and synthesis papers from researchers of all related disciplines. Applied research that has the greatest potential for significant advances within the next decade or so will be given priority. International submissions are welcomed.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative woody biomass products that have high potential to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions within the next decade;
  • Novel technologies for bio-based manufacturing, including biochar, torrefied wood, gasification, and wood–coal cofiring;
  • Effective sustainable use of woody biomass from targeted waste streams, including forest harvesting residues, thinnings to reduce wildfire risk, and manufacturing residues from wood products facilities;
  • Climate change mitigation benefits derived from effective biomass use for energy products;
  • Life cycle assessments of the biomass process and its products, with an emphasis on in-woods operations.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
