Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Light rail transit has experienced a relevant development in the past few decades, with large increases in the number of cities implementing it and in the number of total line kilometers in the world. It has proven to be an effective tool to boost transit patronage, and to influence land use, contributing to an enhancement of the built environment in the corridors where it is built when it is well designed and planned.

The latest technological innovations, such as wireless power, the optimization of energy consumption, and driver-assistance and collision avoidance systems, are shaping the image of the future light rail. Nevertheless, new challenges are ahead, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the fear of riding transit. This has led to a reduction of light rail patronage, with many citizens shifting to cars, bicycles or motorized scooters for commuting.

This Special Issue is related, but not limited, to technological innovations in light rail, patronage and its relation to light rail built-environment integration, the influence of light rail on land use, light rail crashes and safety, the integration of light rail systems into mobility-as-a-service implementations, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on light rail systems.

Both original research and review papers are encouraged.
