Integrating the Water-Energy-Food Nexus for Sustainable Development

This special issue belongs to the section “Social Ecology and Sustainability“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Water–Energy–Food (WEF) nexus is a comprehensive approach to analysing and managing the interconnections between resource systems essential for human and ecological well-being. This framework arises from the need to adopt integrated, dynamic, and synergistic models that improve resource efficiency and sustainability. Territories are increasingly facing climate pressures, ecosystem degradation, urban sprawl, and unsustainable resource exploitation, demanding integrated resilience and adaptation strategies. Considering the WEF nexus in public policy design and territorial planning is crucial for promoting territorial sustainability, particularly within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). The WEF nexus provides a practical tool for strengthening territorial resilience. Furthermore, it highlights the role of nature-based solutions, community engagement, and public–private partnerships as key instruments for achieving territorial sustainability.

This Special Issue aims to publish original research, as well as review articles, case studies, and new approaches that contribute to promoting sustainable territories within the framework of the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) nexus.
