27–30 September 2021, Lucca, Italy
22nd IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)

Due to the COVID-19 situation and restrictions that may still be in place during Spring/Summer 2021, the Organizing Committee, together with the Signal Processing for Wireless Communications and Networking Technical Committee (SPCOM‐TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, has decided to postpone the 22nd IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC) to September 27‐30, 2021, with the aim of having a physical conference, rich of interactions as in the successful spirit of SPAWC.

It is our pleasure to welcome to all of you to the 22nd edition of SPAWC in Lucca, Italy, September 27‐30, 2021. SPAWC, the flagship workshop of the SPCOM‐TC, brings together researchers in signal processing, wireless communications, information theory, and optimization from both academia and industry, and provides them the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas in Lucca, Tuscany. Since 1982, UNESCO has added 7 places in Tuscany to the list of the World Heritage Sites Program.

A WALK INTO HOW MARCONI GAVE US THE WIRELESS WORLD

On Sept. 8, 1902, Guglielmo Marconi was looking at the Tuscan coast from the cruiser “Carlo Alberto” . While passing in front of Leghorn, Marconi expressed his intention to build a powerful intercontinental station. The selected site was Coltano, a rural area between Lucca and Leghorn. The Coltano station was inaugurated by Marconi himself in 1911 with transmissions to Clifden (Ireland) and Glace Bay (Canada). SPAWC 2021 will be a great opportunity to learn more about this once worldwide renowned, but now completely forgotten, radio station.
