The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Alexandru Mihai Grumezescu, who shared with us his vision for the journal and his views on the research area and open access publishing:
1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role of its Section Editor-in-Chief?
What appealed to me about the journal, particularly as it is a new publication with great potential, was the opportunity to shape and contribute to its early development and success. The prospect of helping to establish a journal that is poised to make significant contributions to the field of chemistry is incredibly exciting. I was drawn to the journal’s vision of advancing scientific knowledge and fostering innovative research in chemistry. The opportunity to influence the direction and quality of the content from the outset, while ensuring that the journal becomes a leading platform for cutting-edge research, was a major factor in my decision to take on the role of Section Editor-in-Chief. The journal's potential to quickly establish itself as a key resource in the global scientific community was particularly appealing, as it allows me to be part of something that will have a lasting impact on the field.
2. What is your vision for the Section?
My vision for the “Chemistry Science” Section of Sci is to elevate it as a leading platform for groundbreaking research and to establish it as a central resource for scholars and practitioners alike. I aim to promote interdisciplinary research that bridges traditional chemical sciences with emerging fields such as nanotechnology, environmental chemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences. By encouraging the submission of high-quality, innovative studies, I hope to expand the Section’s influence and impact within the global scientific community. Additionally, I plan to enhance the peer-review process to ensure that rigorous standards are maintained while also fostering a supportive environment for researchers at all career stages.
3. What does the future of this field of research look like?
The future of chemical sciences is incredibly promising, with numerous exciting developments on the horizon. As we continue to explore the intersection of chemistry with other disciplines, we are likely to see significant advances in areas such as sustainable chemistry, green energy, and personalized medicine. The ongoing development of novel materials, such as nanomaterials and biopolymers, will further revolutionize industries ranging from healthcare to environmental management. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning into chemical research is expected to accelerate discovery processes and enhance our ability to tackle complex problems. The field is poised to make profound contributions to solving some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.
4. What do you think of the development of open access in publishing?
The development of open access in publishing represents a pivotal shift in how scientific knowledge is shared and disseminated. I view open access as a positive and necessary evolution in academic publishing, as it democratizes access to research findings, making them available to a broader audience, including those in developing regions and non-academic sectors. This increased accessibility fosters greater collaboration, accelerates the pace of innovation, and ensures that research has a more significant and immediate impact on society. However, it is also crucial to address the challenges associated with open access, such as maintaining the quality and integrity of published research, and ensuring that the financial models supporting open access are sustainable for all stakeholders involved.
We wish Prof. Dr. Alexandru Mihai Grumezescu every success in his new position, and we look forward to his contributions to the journal.
