It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Dr. George Rechnitzer, Editorial Board Member of the journal Safety. He passed on the morning of his 75th birthday.
He was an Adjunct Associate Professor both at the Transport and Road Safety (TARS) Research team at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, NSW, Australia, and also at Monash University’s Department of Forensic Medicine, hosted by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) in Southbank in the Victorian Coroner’s precinct.
Prof. Dr. Rechnitzer was passionate about his work and regarded as one of the most experienced and highly regarded experts in this field by those who knew and worked with him. He made many major contributions to road and workplace safety in Australia and around the world during his 50-year engineering career. He specialized and excelled in applying the fundamental principles of engineering sciences to improve safety across many areas including road safety, vehicle crashworthiness, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), incident investigation and analysis, and countermeasure development for injury prevention. He published extensively, with more than 150 publications, including contributing chapters in books related to traffic crashes and incidents, crash investigation and reconstruction, road and vehicle safety, and OH&S. He gave presentations at over 80 national and international conferences and seminars. His work has helped save countless lives and prevent numerous serious injuries.
On behalf of the safety community, we wish to express our deepest condolences to his family. His colleagues also wish to express their gratefulness for having had the privilege to have known and worked with him and for his lifelong contributions to helping make the world a safer place.
