Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In this Special Issue, we will address a theme that, to a large extent, is neglected in the broader literature of the globalization of Islam, namely Islamism and sexuality in multicultural contexts. Today, there is quite a lot of research on the topic of Islam and sexuality both in its orthodox and heterodox forms. However, if the scope is narrowed down to Islamism, i.e., the politicization of the Koran and Hadith and construction of ideologies for societal change, the number of studies shrink in a palpable way.
The purpose of the issue is to widen the general understanding of communicative and social strategies developed by Islamists in multicultural contexts when they campaign for ideological influence of their notions of sexuality. Islamism is grounded in the notion that Islam is a universal “policy” containing rules and solutions for all mankind. At the same time, in multicultural contexts, Islamists have to cope with religious and secular audiences, that is, a heterogeneous “market” of various culturally specific ideas, norms, and rules regulating sexual relations.
Questions we want to explore are: How do Islamists frame their arguments when they work to influence various audiences—Muslims and others—with ideas of sexuality? What are the forums used by Islamists to disseminate their ideas of sexual relations? How do they cope with secular audiences who show a hostile or negative attitude to Islamist ideology of sexuality? How do Islamists construct boundaries between sexual and non-sexual practices? What kind of impression management techniques are used by Islamists when they campaign among various groups for sexual norms derived from the Koran?
We welcome articles from scholars working on these issues in various academic disciplines. The articles can have a theoretical or an empirical focus grounded in qualitative or quantitative methodologies
