Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the rise of programmable photonic circuits, post-fabrication trimming, and dynamic system adaptation, reconfigurability and tunability have become increasingly important. However, achieving electrical tunability in passive photonic devices remains a long-standing challenge for photonic platforms that inherently lack electro-optic tuning capabilities. Piezoelectric actuation offers a low-power, high-speed solution that holds great promise for next-generation photonic computing and signal processing due to its seamless compatibility with passive photonic platforms. This emerging technology has enabled a plethora of applications, including frequency-agile tunable lasers, optical isolators, high-speed modulators, quantum transducers, and LiDAR systems. Driven by its unique tuning capabilities and fabrication compatibility, piezoelectrically actuated integrated photonics are expected to evolve into a cornerstone architecture for future reconfigurable photonic integrated circuits.

This Special Issue focuses on the state-of-the-art advancements in piezoelectrically actuated integrated photonics, with a broader aim of presenting novel design methodologies, device architectures, fabrication techniques, and cutting-edge applications. We welcome submissions in any format, including original research articles, reviews, letters, and perspectives. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Piezoelectric materials and platforms;
  • Novel device architectures;
  • Optomechanics;
  • Optoelectronic integration;
  • Fabrication techniques;
  • Integrated optical modulators;
  • Integrated photonic computing;
  • AI-accelerated computing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
